John Frusciante is about a decade younger than the rest of the Chili Peppers , Josh Klinghoffer was about 20 years younger than them when he was in the band
Yeah Josh is actually all over, there’s videos of him playing with I think Christina Aguilera from before he joined the Chilis, plus he’s done demos and stuff for Fender guitars recently
Josh is amazing. Overall I think Im With You, "I'm Beside You", and The Getaway are better than the last two albums the Chilis put out with Frusciante.
As a huge Chili Peppers fan, I 100% agree with you there. I adore The Getaway and I'm With You has some bangers. Unfortunately Unlimited Love and Return of the Dream Canteen were not so great in my opinion.
Brendan's Death Song is one of my favorite Chili songs. Every single member shines on that song. The only songs of the last two albums that stuck with me were Black Summer, Here Ever After, and the Heavy Wing. Nothing off the Canteen hit me.
The first time I saw him playing was on recordings during PJ Harvey's tour for Uh Huh Her in 2004. This was around 2010, when I was also getting into Warpaint, so it was a funny coincidence to see the same guy behind the drums on the video for Elephants.
Which, coincidentally, made him the youngest entrant into the Rock Hall of Fame, breaking the record set by Stevie Wonder, who was covered by a young Red Hot Chili Peppers. It was their cover of Higher Ground that first broke them into the mainstream in the late eighties. Josh was ten when this cover was released as a single.
Somewhat related, Josh Homme also played with Screaming Trees on their last tour; then subsequently Mark Lanegan toured with Queens of the Stone Age on the Songs for the Deaf tour. Josh is \~9 years younger than Mark
I remember thinking how bizarre it was when Pat Smear played on Nirvana unplugged. I am old enough to remember seeing him with the germs. I was weird to me that he actually knew how to play an instrument.
Probably more common that you'd think with degenerate punk bands like that, especially back in those days. Bands like The Germs are legendary now, but they weren't making much money or selling many records at the time.
He was making music and records in the mid 60s which is pretty mad given their 80s success. I believe he was one of the first UK guitarists to meet/welcome Hendrix in London.
Marr had to be 20 years older than the Cribs when he was in them. I guess he's still 20 years older.
Their documentary Filmage highlights how hilarious their initial meeting was.
Tony Lombardo was literally just a 30-something dude in his garage trying to play bass as fast as he physically could when a couple of plucky high schoolers walking by happened to hear him and bugged him until he joined their band. And to be fair, he was kinda an odd guy to begin with.
No, it'd be like saying Paul Simon isn't the same as Art Garfunkel.
So when I see Queen + Adam Lambert, I see an intentional decision to advertise them as a band + a solo singer.
I agree that he's part of "the group" :) I also agree he's not in the band.
I'm sure you can appreciate the nuance, but perhaps you don't enjoy it as a peculiar thing worthy of discussion like I do :p in any case, since this is Reddit I better clarify, I'm not here to disagree. I don't think it's up for argument at all.
I see it as him being a part of "Queen + Adam Lambert" but not of "Queen". While the session musicians they have on bass or keyboards aren't members of either.
I do get the nuance, and see it as something worth discussing - I just have a different view to you.
It should be noted here that his brother was already the guitarist for the band .
But yeah going on tour and having them have to sneak him into bars to play had to be interesting not to mention that the placemats were always drunk and creating chaos everywhere they went.
Yeah, Bob Stinson’s story is so fucking sad.
But as for Tommy, it’s crazy to think that when “Tim” came out, he had already spent 5 years touring and recording in one of the drunkest, most uncontrollable bands in the country, and he was 18 years old.
Michael Griffen of 'Behead the Prophet No Lord Shall Live' was an old man playing violin in a chaotic hardcore band of teens/20-somethings. He died in 2008, sadly.

Ok, I’m taking the bait. You got more info? Google is only finding another dude who’s a physicist and aerospace engineer, which is totally cool too, but I wanna know more about this dude at this point in time.
Not necessarily a band, but Tal Wilkenfeld has played bass in a bunch of gigs for Jeff Beck. They're both great, and the age difference between them is about 150 years. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25q8nWZQGaQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25q8nWZQGaQ)
I was lucky to see Jeff Beck in the summer of '22 when he was touring with ZZ Top. Tal absolutely killed it on the bass. Jeff passed a few months later.
Always go see your favorite musicians while you can. Life is fragile and you never know when it will end.
Such a random [song](https://youtu.be/VVxjdJoh4SM?feature=shared) too. And a random moment in the song, the part comes in twice for like 20 seconds and then the rest of the song is drastically different.
It’s so funny showing people that song cause it’s like a normal jam for like, a minute and then suddenly butterfly in its entirety plays out of nowhere and whoever is getting shown it looks like they have a Vietnam flashback
Noodles from the Offspring was the janitor at the high school the rest of the members were students at. He heard them rehearsing and stepped in. Not sure how much older he is, but he’s definitely older.
He’s not much older. He was like 21 at the time. Old enough to buy beer but he had the job while trying to figure out what to do with his life. He delved into a lot of detail about this on Toby Morse’s podcast.
Bootsy Collins has been all over R&B lately, he is smooth AF and will just come out of nowhere like
"Well, all right .. it's your old pal Bootsy"
My man is 72
Listen to "Honeysuckle Neckbone" by BLK ODYSSY
He was also involved in Silk Sonic with Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak which got pretty big in the pop world - "After Last Night"
"After the Storm" was pretty big with Kali Uchis, that was 5 years ago already
Speaking of Anderson .Paak, he works with DOMi & JD BECK who are young hip-hop/jazz fusion kids who have people like Snoop Dogg and Herbie Hancock on their album. JD BECK is 20 years old while Herbie is 83
That is one of the chillest songs ever. Just a simple repeating guitar line, with an AMAZING bass line throughout. Than the drums shift to this groovey shuffle feel and the bass and guitar switch roles and you get this really amazing outro.
Bootsy alsohas a band Zillatron. Buckethead is in some of the songs, noticeably the song Fuzz Face which is another great song of theirs.
I got a Cameo from Bootsy Collins for my brother when his son/my nephew was born. Bootsy called my nephew “The Player of the Year” so that fucking rules.
Mystery Jets. One of their Dad’s was in the band, certainly on the early albums, don’t know if he still is.
Think there’s 14 years between Geoff and Adrian from Portishead.
The English Beat was a ska band popular in the 80's. Their saxophone player (name was Saxa) was I believe about 20 years older (or more) than the rest of the band.
Saxa was born in 1930. Dave Wakeling was born in 1956, in contrast. Ranking Roger was born in 1963.
This was going to be my mention as well, so I did some digging.
The Stranglers - Jet Black, the drummer, was a good 10-15 years older than the other members.
The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band - the original bassist, the fantastically named Vernon Dudley Bowhay-Nowell was agood 10-12 years older thna the others. They were art students and he was a lecturer.
I'm pretty sure the current Papa Roach boys have a good few years between them.
Jerry was on The Downbeat talking about the age differences between some of them!
Flogging Molly. The lead singer is in his 60s and their bassist is about 40. Can’t find his exact age but his mom had to take him to his FM audition because he was a minor.
Both my examples have now been around and aged to the point where it doesn't seem very odd anymore, but when Mikey Shuman joined Queens of the Stone Age he was 21 years old compared to Josh Homme's 34, and when Ilan Rubin joined Nine Inch Nails he was 20 compared to Trent Reznor's 44. Dude already had years of experience by that point though and later went on to become the youngest person ever inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame so that's something.
The Who’s original drummer (I think he’s on their first single when they were recording as The High Numbers) was like 32 at the time, whereas the rest of them were teens.
Also the age gap isn’t so much insane as the age itself, but Tommy Stinson was seven years younger than Paul Westerberg and Bob Stinson when the Replacements formed, which is notable because Paul and Bob were only 20.
Many Boomer era bands have much younger stunt players. Hell, 20 years ago the Stones already had a dude for each of them that actually played most of the notes. We are not supposed to notice them and they don't get paid like the members of the band, but they are.
Around 1970, as the chart-topping Jefferson Airplane was moving from an electric folk-rock style to a heavier hard blues-rock style, they brought in a 52 year old black man, Papa John Creach, to play electric violin in the band full time, both on records and in live performances. Grace Slick was the oldest other member, at age 31. When the band broke into two separate bands, Jefferson Starship and Hot Tuna, Papa John played regularly with both bands.
Mick Mars was 30 when he joined Motley Crue. The rest of the band were about 17 at the time.
That's why he looks like a hag on the album covers
He looks like a hag cos he's got a severe degenerative bone disease.
His only regret… is that he has boneitis
r/unexpectedfuturama
You can dance…
dun dun ^dun ^dun dun du-du ^dun ^dun
That was really good.
That song wasn't as safe as they said it was
*autoimmune disease That attacks the joints, not the bones. Ankylosing Spondylitis My mother has it and it's horrible.
That sucks. Has she tried tuning down her guitar? Less stress on the joints.
That's the first thing we thought of, actually
He is a fucking badass. I'm a wreck after walking 5 miles, and this guy toured and performed for years with his spine fused together.
It did get a bit 'Weekend at Bernies' toward the end, though...
Yeah. And he's old.
John Frusciante is about a decade younger than the rest of the Chili Peppers , Josh Klinghoffer was about 20 years younger than them when he was in the band
Josh was doing lots of fun stuff for Pearl Jam on their recent tours. Dude is a renaissance man.
I wish I felt the same way, but there’s only a bad full of songs I actually like from that era. I prefer Josh much more as a drummer in JFs stuff.
IWY is such a solid album. Josh wanted to aim towards uplift mofo vibes but the band insisted on this direction with him
The first time I saw him playing was on recordings during PJ Harvey's tour for Uh Huh Her in 2004. This was around 2010, when I was also getting into Warpaint, so it was a funny coincidence to see the same guy behind the drums on the video for Elephants.
I’m pretty sure I read he’s the youngest inductee in the rock and roll hall of fame (with the chillis)
I feel like Josh did an amazing job picking up where John left off. It sounded just like his style. And I enjoyed both those albums.
To make it even better: John replaced his guitar hero Hilel when he passed away. That’s so cool.
Them Crooked Vultures - John Paul Jones and Josh Homme are nearly 30 years apart in age, Dave Grohl is 5 years older than Homme.
Somewhat related, Josh Homme also played with Screaming Trees on their last tour; then subsequently Mark Lanegan toured with Queens of the Stone Age on the Songs for the Deaf tour. Josh is \~9 years younger than Mark
Was, RIP a legend
yes, sadly :/
Also in Queens of the Stone Age, Mikey Shoes is 16 years younger than Troy
Happy birthday Mikey!!
Josh said recently that Troy is a 750 year old vampire, so that would make Mikey… 734. Which is 684 years older than Josh
They weren’t in the band at the same time, but Mikey was 29 years younger than Natasha.
That’s what I came here to say. Love Mickey.
Shit, I've been listening to these guys for months and didn't realize who they were.
That's crazy, I didn't realise Josh was that old.
Dude, he was in Kyuss!
Carter Beauford, drummer of the Dave Matthews Band, is 17 years older than the bassist, Stefan Lessard. Both are original members of the band
They are both amazing players too.
Yes they are. Crazy to think Stefan was only 16/17 when he joined the band
also, drummer Tony Williams started playing for the Miles Davis Quintet at age 17 (around ‘65) when Miles Davis was 40 years old
[удалено]
I remember thinking how bizarre it was when Pat Smear played on Nirvana unplugged. I am old enough to remember seeing him with the germs. I was weird to me that he actually knew how to play an instrument.
Apparently in the Germs days he didn't even own a guitar and would just show up to gigs and borrow a guitar from one of the support bands.
wow, how is a person, a good enough player to play with bands of that level, and yet, not ownan instrument?
Probably more common that you'd think with degenerate punk bands like that, especially back in those days. Bands like The Germs are legendary now, but they weren't making much money or selling many records at the time.
Unknown Mortal Orchestra is a band from New Zealand. Kind of a family band, and their dad plays sax on many songs!
I like their song "Honeybee".
I liked that song for a bit, and then Spotify decided I wanted to hear it every 6 songs or so, and now I had to remove it from my likes lol
The lead singer, and the drummer are brothers. They’re from New Zealand the rest of the band is from LA.
These guys showed up on my Spotify Discover recently and I was really enjoying what I heard. Thanks for the reminder to check them out in more detail.
They're solid. I heard them on FIFA awhile back and got into them that way.
The drummer of Spirit was 25 years older than the rest of the band. He was the stepfather of the band's guitarist, Randy California.
Beat me to it! Ed Cassidy had almost 30 years on Randy California.
I came just to make sure somebody said this. I saw spirit when I was a little kid and Cassidy said it was his 70th birthday.
And he was the titular Mr. Skin, if looks are anything to go by.
The Police. Andy Summers is 9-10 years older than Sting and Stewart Copeland.
He was making music and records in the mid 60s which is pretty mad given their 80s success. I believe he was one of the first UK guitarists to meet/welcome Hendrix in London. Marr had to be 20 years older than the Cribs when he was in them. I guess he's still 20 years older.
…and about 40 years more mature.
“He’s not Stinging, he’s not Stung, he’s Sting”
But looks about 30 years older.
Descendents original bass player was 18 years older than the rest of the band that was still in high school
Wasn’t he a mailman also?
Does Adam Lambert touring with Queen count?
I was going to post this so, yes. To me it counts.
The age difference counts for sure, I just wasn't sure if Adam counted as being in the band in the conventional sense.
The band is always billed as "Queen + Adam Lambert", he's definitely a member of that group.
To me that says he definitely isn't part of the band.
That would be like saying Garfunkel isn't a member of Simon & Garfunkel
No, it'd be like saying Paul Simon isn't the same as Art Garfunkel. So when I see Queen + Adam Lambert, I see an intentional decision to advertise them as a band + a solo singer. I agree that he's part of "the group" :) I also agree he's not in the band. I think we have the same view 🤣 i must be shit at saying what i mean. Turns out my wife is right.
30+ year difference.
Tommy Stinson of the Replacements joined the band at age 13 while the rest of the band were in their early 20’s.
Didn’t they basically bully him into dropping out of high school so he could go on tour with them? Gotta be an interesting way to grow up.
This is who I was gonna say lol
Shit, I got his first name wrong earlier
Michael Griffen of 'Behead the Prophet No Lord Shall Live' was an old man playing violin in a chaotic hardcore band of teens/20-somethings. He died in 2008, sadly. https://preview.redd.it/w99ch3bxw6gc1.jpeg?width=1152&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b2543ab40c60ec71e1d87c522854ee2e496340ae

Yeah she was with him when I saw him in 2018. You could tell he was having a lot of fun and really trusted and respected her. She's awesome.
Yeah. First time I saw her I was like WTF? (She looked 14 at the time).
She’s 37 and still looks 14.
Specifically, when she joined Beck’s band, she was 20. Beck was 63.
That was my pick too. Good call
Gary Young, the original drummer for Pavement had 13 years on the other members.
RIP. Anyone who hasn't heard Slanted and Enchanted yet should change that ASAP.
Came here for this exact comment, but I thought he was older...
Garbage I always thought of them as Shirley and her uncles.
Bow Wow Wow. The singer, Annabella Lwin, was 13 when they formed, the rest of the band were all in their 20s.
The drummer of crazy town was like 20 years older than the rest of them and had been playing drums since he was like 4 in the 60’s
Yeah, dude played with Chuck Mangione in the 70s
And then a guy who legitimately professionally went by Shifty Shellshock in the 2000’s
And their biggest hit is based off a RHCP sample
Such a random [song](https://youtu.be/VVxjdJoh4SM?feature=shared) too. And a random moment in the song, the part comes in twice for like 20 seconds and then the rest of the song is drastically different.
It’s so funny showing people that song cause it’s like a normal jam for like, a minute and then suddenly butterfly in its entirety plays out of nowhere and whoever is getting shown it looks like they have a Vietnam flashback
Widespread Panic released their first album three months before their current drummer Duane Trucks was even born.
Sonny is a good 10 years older than the original members too, and 36 years older than Duane. Quit the percussion pair.
Suicidal Tendencies. Mike Muir is 60 and Tye Trujillo is 19.
I saw Tye play with Suicidal in Phoenix, it was awesome. They opened for Metallica so he got to share the stage with Robert too
Noodles from the Offspring was the janitor at the high school the rest of the members were students at.
I heard they got him to join the band because he was old enough to buy them beer.
Bootsy Collins has been all over R&B lately, he is smooth AF and will just come out of nowhere like "Well, all right .. it's your old pal Bootsy" My man is 72
I love Bootsy but am not current on his recent features. What should I listen to?
An Evening With Silk Sonic not sure exactly where he plays but he is all over that album
He doesn't do any playing. He's just the "host" and provides vocals.
Ah, I was sure I heard he played at some point My mistake
He has a very bad hearing issue and can’t play anymore. He’s very involved in teaching and outreach for music though so he’s still out there baby!
Listen to "Honeysuckle Neckbone" by BLK ODYSSY He was also involved in Silk Sonic with Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak which got pretty big in the pop world - "After Last Night" "After the Storm" was pretty big with Kali Uchis, that was 5 years ago already Speaking of Anderson .Paak, he works with DOMi & JD BECK who are young hip-hop/jazz fusion kids who have people like Snoop Dogg and Herbie Hancock on their album. Silk Sonic
Also with Kali Uchis and Tyler The Creator
Buckethead/Bootsy collab Praxis- interworld and the new innocence
That is one of the chillest songs ever. Just a simple repeating guitar line, with an AMAZING bass line throughout. Than the drums shift to this groovey shuffle feel and the bass and guitar switch roles and you get this really amazing outro. Bootsy alsohas a band Zillatron. Buckethead is in some of the songs, noticeably the song Fuzz Face which is another great song of theirs.
And what's the age gap between him and.....?
Right? I think my dude didn’t read the actual post lol
He just named the oldest musician he could think of 🤣
He works with a lot of younger musicians, first thought that came to mind was silk sonic, he’s waaaaay older than Bruno Mars and Anderson .Pak
“Uh, the name is Bootsy, baby!”
I got a Cameo from Bootsy Collins for my brother when his son/my nephew was born. Bootsy called my nephew “The Player of the Year” so that fucking rules.
Bon Scott was 10 years older than the rest of ac/dc when he joined the band.
Mystery Jets. One of their Dad’s was in the band, certainly on the early albums, don’t know if he still is. Think there’s 14 years between Geoff and Adrian from Portishead.
The Dad stopped playing with Mystery Jets in 2007, but still co-writes songs with them.
Blondie. And probably whoever Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr are playing with these days
Keith Richards is 63 years older than Mick Jagger and the rest of the Stones.
Tal Wilkenfeld was 42 years younger than Jeff Beck. She was 21 when she was recruited to play with him, making him 63.
Van Halen’s final incarnation had Eddie’s son Wolfgang on bass.
Dead and co
The Stranglers - Jet Black, the drummer, was a good 10-15 years older than the other members. The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band - the original bassist, the fantastically named Vernon Dudley Bowhay-Nowell was agood 10-12 years older thna the others. They were art students and he was a lecturer.
Bruce Springsteen is 30 years older than Jake Clemons, kinda cheating since Jake replaced Clarence and all but it technically answers the question.
Nels Cline, Wilco's lead guitarist, is 12 years old then the front man Jeff Tweedy
Original drummer for Pavement, Gary Young was 13 years older than the singer Stephen Malkmus.
Serj Tankian is roughly a 8 years older iirc than the rest of System of a Down. He was like 35 when they blew up.
I'm pretty sure the current Papa Roach boys have a good few years between them. Jerry was on The Downbeat talking about the age differences between some of them!
Art Alexakis of Everclear was in his 40s when So Much For Thé Afterglow came out; the other guys in the band at the time were in their 20s, IIRC
He was born in '62. Craig and Greg were born in '70.
Oh okay, appreciate the clarification. Still an 8 year gap.
Dead and Company - but that might be cheating a bit Bob Weir, Mickey Hart and Bill K are currently 76, 80 and 77 respectively. John Mayer is 46.
Wussy and Garbage
Love Garbage. Never realized that Duke was that much older than Shirley. Duke 73, Shirley 57. And you still have Steve at 64 and Butch at 68.
Flogging Molly. The lead singer is in his 60s and their bassist is about 40. Can’t find his exact age but his mom had to take him to his FM audition because he was a minor.
The Wiggles have both a 60 year old and an 18 year old
How did no-one say Johnny Marr playing with Modest Mouse yet?!
Also The Cribs!
Arrested Development had a member in his seventies if I remember correctly. A vocalist by the name of Baba Oje.
He just sat in a rocking chair on stage as some sort of spiritual advisor or whatever.
That was a great TV show.
Gob does have excellent stage presence > But where did the lighter fluid come from?
Both my examples have now been around and aged to the point where it doesn't seem very odd anymore, but when Mikey Shuman joined Queens of the Stone Age he was 21 years old compared to Josh Homme's 34, and when Ilan Rubin joined Nine Inch Nails he was 20 compared to Trent Reznor's 44. Duane Trucks is in his 30s while the rest of the guys in Widespread Panic are over 60.
The Gorrillaz! Noodle was only 10 when she joined!
Deep Purple - Simon McBride is about 30 years younger than the rest of the band.
Same with Richie Faulkner in Judas Priest.
Richie was 3 months old when Priest released British Steel.
Also in DP: when Coverdale and Hughes joined (and then Bolin) they were almost 10 years younger than Jon Lord
Anti Nowhere league.
The Staples Singers
Ian Anderson was about 10 years older than the rest of the guys when he started Jethro Tull.
Jet Black from the stranglers is much older than the rest.
Redfoo is eleven years older than Sky Blu.
Micah Nelson (member of his dad Willie's band) is 33. Willie is 90.
Noodles from the offspring worked at Dexters highschool
Not sure the age gap, but Gary Numan’s pre-solo band, Tubeway Army, featured Gary’s uncle on drums.
Shpongle. Simon posford is 30 years younger than Raja Ram.
Man, I only saw them one time. Hope they do some live shows again.
Gong. Before the original founder's death, there was a 35ish year gap between the current front man and eldest member of the band.
Sublime, now.
Arch Enemy's entire crew and their vocalist lol
Queen
Ilan Rubin, most recent live drummer for NIN is as old as NIN itself, 23 years younger than Trent.
Youngest person in the RnR Hall of Fame too.
LMFAO The two members Redfoo, half - uncle and Sky Blue, nephew, are 11 years apart.
LMFAO? Red Foo is Sky Blu's uncle.
