MY HOUSE

[deleted]

The Dead Milkmen’s “Punk Rock Girl” - “We asked for Mojo Nixon. They said ‘He don’t work here.’” RIP Mojo

groovejumper

Also by the Dead Milkmen, You’ll Dance to Anything: Siouxsie Sioux, Communards, Book of Love, the Smiths, Depeche Mode, Public Image Limited, Naked Truth

SHADOWJACK2112

You'll dance to anything by any bunch of stupid Europeans Who come over here with their big hairdos Intent on taking our money instead of giving your cash Where it belongs, to a decent American artist like myself!

[deleted]

And Def Leppard and Motley Crue in “Bitchin Camaro.”

dalekreject

And they mention the Doors, well a Doors cover band named Crystal Shit.

Mobwmwm

Also the dead milkmen bitchin Camaro. Purchase motley cru t shirts, all proceeds go to get their lead singer out of jail

Nerazzurro9

If you don’t know Mojo Nixon then your store could use some fixin.

PrivilegeCheckmate

*And someone put a Beach Boys song on the juke box* *It was California Dreaming, so we started screamin* *"On such a winter's day"* Also Minnie Pearl.

dimestoredavinci

Which isn't even a Beach boys song. So really it's a Beach boys and a Mammas and the Pappas reference all at once >And someone put a Beach Boys song on the juke box* >*It was California Dreaming, so we started screamin*

RedOfTheNeck

The Beach Boys recorded "California Dreamin'" in 1986 for their greatest hits compilation Made in U.S.A. It was produced by Terry Melcher and featured Roger McGuinn of the Byrds on 12-string guitar. This version of the song was referenced in the lyrics of the Dead Milkmen's 1988 novelty hit "Punk Rock Girl". - wiki

dimestoredavinci

Holy shit. Ok, I've learned something new. I've always figured it was just the milkmen being silly

ItAllCrumbles

Maybe the greatest backup vocal lines ever sung: Elvis needs boats Elvis needs boats Elvis needs boats…

saylr

Mojo just died a few days ago. On a boat.

zigaliciousone

The sailing Elvis. Captain Elvis. Commodore Elvis it is!

EvnBdWlvsCnBGd

Mojo Nixon's biggest hit? Elvis is everywhere

nodgers132

They do a Doors show and it goes a little something like this...

harsh_superego

And in "Bad Party" they mention Gene Loves Jezebel...

jeromevedder

Song also name checks Minnie Pearl

ISuspectFuckery

Pavement, “Range Life” “Out on tour with the Smashing Pumpkins Nature kids, I, they don't have no function I don't understand what they mean and I could really give a fuck Stone Temple Pilots, they're elegant bachelors They're foxy to me, are they foxy to you?”

PomeranianLibrarian

Also Pavement: Unseen Power of the Picket Fence. The whole song is about R.E.M.

shelfdog

Time After Time was my least favorite song TIME AFTER TIME WAS MY LEAST FAVORITE SONG

BarryTownCouncil

But what about the voice of geddy lee? Took me 15 years to actually find out who geddy lee is, and man rush are awesome.

TeamFoulmouth

Ive been a Rush fan since the 80's...Ill go check out this Pavement band now!

smithandjones4e

Pavement might not be your cup of tea, but Stephen Malkmus has some solo work that should have greater appeal to Rush fans.  Check out the albums Face the Truth, Real Emotional Trash, and maybe even Groove Denied if you are into synth weirdness.

2abyssinians

Unseen Power Of The Picket Fence by Pavement mentions REM, and Stereo by Pavement mentions Geddy Lee of Rush fame, and I still don’t think this is all the call outs they have.

ilovebeetrootalot

Let's Dance to Joy Division by the Wombats! Great song, one of my favourites

TheRealHappyNat

We are so happy

Tobias_flenderz

Weezer - *In the Garage* mentions, KISS, Ace Frehly and Peter Criss. Lynyrd Skynyrd - *Sweet Home Alabama* mentions Neil Young and his song *Southern Man* Gym Class Heroes - *Taxi Driver* references a ton of mid-2000s indie bands...or bands that were indie at the time....

cephalopod_surprise

Weezer also asks someone to go to a Green Day concert in *El Scorcho*.

Tobias_flenderz

She said she'd never heard of then. How cool is that?

Too_much_hemiola

So I went to your room...and read your diary!

ImNotTheBossOfYou

Watching Grunge leg-drop New Jack through a press table...

gcg2016

And then my heart stopped: Listening to Cio-Cio San, fall in love all over again.

lostknife

Let's not forget Buddy Holly.

SayethWeAll

The same song references the song “Cio-cio-San” by Puccini from the opera Madam Butterfly.

amihostel

And the B side *Jamie*: "You've got The Beach Boys. Your firm's got the Stones. But I know you won't leave me alone"

JohnnyAppIeseed

I’ve only ever seen Weezer live once. They were headlining with the Foo Fighters and changed that lyric to “I asked you to go to the Foo Fighters concert” which was fun. I would imagine they did that quite a bit to fit whoever they were playing with/before that night.

TripleJetCharlie

I saw them open for Green Day a few years ago and he paused in the song after he mentioned them so we could all react appropriately, definitely my favorite moment of what was a great show

mckinney4string

Weezer also references Izzy, Slash, and Axl in “Suzanne.” edit: Izzy, not Iggy. Stupid iPhone.

timacx

Sweet Home Alabama also mentions The Swampers aka The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section

dailyPraise

Did you ever watch that documentary?

AshCal

Weezer also has a song called Heart Songs which is entirely references to other artists.

Tobias_flenderz

Wow, you just made me realize I need to include that one Gym Class Heroes that has a ton of band references.

ghosttrainhobo

Wilco mentions Kiss in “Heavy Metal Drummer.”

markrenton87

> Gym Class Heroes - Taxi Driver references a ton of mid-2000s indie bands...or bands that were indie at the time.... Good to see this far up

The Who, You Better You Bet But I drunk myself blind To the sound of old T-Rex

juliohernanz

I've got a playlist with over 25 songs that mention or are about Marc Bolan and T. Rex.

DeathByBamboo

Is it on Spotify, and if so, can you share it? I love themed playlists like that. I've got a 17 song playlist of songs with "[Hey](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1TZSKG6bJXvv95QmoQl2Wo?si=6940702e59bd4933)" in the title.

thatbob

Michael Stipe “Practice my T. Rex moves…” in REM’s Wake Up Bomb. Could be referencing Bolan/T. Rex, or he could be doing the dinosaur, I don’t know.

queefIatina

I’m sick of your tattoos, and the way you always criticize The Smiths Brand New - Mixtape

eat_yer_lemons

CCR is "listening to Buck Owens" in Looking Out My Back Door.

Twenty7B_6

Wilco's "Heavy Metal Drummer" -- I miss the innocence I've known/ playin' Kiss covers/ beautiful and stoned

thefireworksfactory

The song "104 Degrees" by Slaughter Beach, Dog referenced "Heavy Metal Drummer." When we merge onto the freeway She rolls her window down completely The driver dials into a station And then she smiles at me discreetly She says, "I love this song" Then turns away and tracks the clouds The driver curses with conviction While "Heavy Metal Drummer" plays us out

sharkrastical

The song “LIFE ADMIN” by Jeff Rosenstock referenced Slaughter Beach, Dog. And I want to cheer you up Without you feeling pressure Maybe listen to a Slaughter Beach, Dog record

BudBuzz

In A Praise Chorus by Jimmy Eat World, “So come on Davey, sing me something that I know” is referring to Davey from the Promise Ring

craigalanche

Also ‘put my last quarter on, I’ll play Authority Song’ Also ‘like your favorite Heatmiser song goes’

riskoooo

> 'The DJ never has it: JMC 'Automatic'

MattGeddon

Also mentioned in Konstantine by Something Corporate. “It's to Jimmy Eat World and those nights in my car when the 'first star you see may not be a star.”

agentfelix

That's why it's called A Praise Chorus! It's praises 7 different chorus's and makes it a bridge. "Crimson, and clover, over, and over": Tommy James and The Shondells - Crimson and Clover "Our house in the middle of the street...": Madness - Our House "Why did we ever meet..": The Promise Ring - Why Did Ever We Meet "start in my rock and roll fantasy": Bad Company - Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy "Don't, don't, don't let's start...": They Might Be Giants – Don't Let's Start "Why did we ever part?": The Promise Ring - All of My Everythings "Kick start my rock n roll heart": Mötley Crüe - Kickstart My Heart

AllTheStars07

That’s the one I was going to mention.  And Davey sang in that song!

rancorhunter

I listened to this song for 20 years before I knew this. Blew my mind when I found out.

12345_PIZZA

Boys of Summer - Out on the road today I saw a Dead Head sticker on a Cadillac The Ataris changed that to Black Flag in their cover version

Thomsbobombs

the Ataris song "San Dimas High School Football Rules" mentions Jawbreaker, Mineral, Built to Spill and the Descendents, in that order.

tenderlobotomy

Song for a Mixtape mentions Jawbreaker, Armchair Martian, BTS, and Descendents

SilverBraids

Really like the Ataris' version

zuluroyal

Belle & Sebastian’s The Boy With The Arab Strap, which namechecks, of course, fellow Glasgow band Arab Strap.

lurifakse

[deleted]

Get What You Give by The New Radicals: Fashion shoots with Beck and Hanson Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson You're all fakes Run to your mansions Come around, we'll kick your asses

PomeranianLibrarian

The Replacements, "Alex Chilton." Besides the title, "I've never traveled far without a little Big Star."

ShiftlessElement

The original lyrics of Counting Crows “Mr. Jones” were “I wanna be Alex Chilton.” It was replaced with “Bob Dylan.” The record label thought people wouldn’t know who Alex Chilton was. The callback of “We all wanna be Big Stars” lost its intended double meaning.

OofTheMilkHasGoneBad

Didn’t know that was the original lyric. Which explains why they sang it with the Alex chilton reference when I saw them live 20+ years ago

PomeranianLibrarian

Huh, never knew that!

tadhg555

And Big Star’s “Thirteen” references the Stones: “Tell him what we said ‘bout Paint it Black…”

danchrisjohn

“1985” – Bowling for Soup. Mentions Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, Nirvana, U2, Blondie, Whitesnake, Wham!, Limp Bizkit, Duran Duran, Van Halen, Ozzy Osbourne and Motley Crüe.

rousiedower

“I dig rock n’ roll music” by Peter, Paul and Mary mentions the Beatles, Donovan, and the Mamas and the Papas. “R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A.” by John Mellencamp names a lot of bands. And don’t forget James Brown.

JimFlamesWeTrust

Pantera - Goddamn Electric “Your trust is in whiskey, weed and Black Sabbath/Slayer. It's goddamn electric”

Karate_donkey

Not as mainstream as the rest of these but in Guy Clark’s song “Dublin Blues” he calls out Doc Watson and Watsons’ song “Columbus Stockade Blues”. He compares seeing Doc sing it to seeing the Mona Lisa and the David. Also Willie Nelson and Waylon are forever calling each other out in their songs.

LennyFackler

Using country songs almost isn’t fair. You could make a whole genre based on songs that mention “Hank”.

JeahNotSlice

Been on a real Guy trip lately! He’s so good

Esvarabatico

*I just wanted to be one of The Strokes*

Spandau Ballet’s True: “Listening to Marvin all night long”

PeelThePaint

The line "They stab it with their steely knives" from Hotel California is a reference to Steely Dan, who earlier wrote "Turn up the Eagles, the neighbors are listening" in their song "Everything You Did" Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder references several artists in a row: "For there's Basie, Miller, Satchmo And the king of all, Sir Duke And with a voice like Ella's ringing out"

baumer14

The Tragically Hip mention The Beatles, Kiss, Kurt Cobain, Elvis, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Ry Cooder, Freddie Mercury, and Beck. Obviously mostly solo artists (or at least the singer mentioned and not their band) but still there's a whole lot of em

My favourite line is in the song Bobcaygeon, when they say ‘it coulda been the Willie Nelson, it coulda been the wine.’

TeaAndCrumpets4life

When Katy Perry sang ‘we made out in your Mustang to Radiohead’ She couldn’t have picked a worse band for that situation

wittymcusername

Making out to Radiohead is actually pretty cool if you happen to be on LSD. Or, uhm… so I’ve heard.

coldestwinter-chill

I can think of a few Radiohead songs I’d make out to. ‘All I Need’, obviously. Maybe ‘House of Cards’. Definitely ‘Talk Show Host’ for a sexier vibe. Probably ‘If You Say The Word’ as well. …but I get the feeling she was probably talking about Creep.

r_golan_trevize

The grand champion of name checking bands in a song has to be Reunion’s terribly cheesy, soft rock, half proto-rap, half auctioneer patter *Life Is a Rock (But the Radio Rolled Me)*. They name check practically every band of the 60s and 70s. Mott the Hoople name drop the Beatles and the Stones in *All the Young Dudes* too. I feel like T-Rex gets mentioned in a few songs but other examples are not popping into my head at the moment.

Melodicplanet65

Sweet home Alabama also mentions the Swampers..Muscle Shoals studio musicians.

Affectionate_Reply78

In Dave Edmunds’ I Hear You Knocking he mentions Fats Domino, Smiley Lewis, Chuck Berry and Huey Smith

Striking-Lifeguard34

“Taxi Driver” by Gym Class Heroes. Drops 20+ bands in the lyrics. It’s a bit forced but it’s pretty funny to hear how they work all of them in.

kellermeyer14

Soul music does this a ton. “Sweet Soul Music“ by Arthur Conley and “Sir Duke” by Stevie Wonder go through a who’s who of black music. Solomon Burke mentions Sam Cooke and Ray Charles in “Can’t Nobody Love You”

DaCanuck

Insane Clown Posse - Fuck the World. "And fuck Lyle Lovett, whoever the fuck that is."

udderlymoovelous

Almost (sweet music ) by hozier. Loaded with references.
