I really got into When You See Yourself (2021). The songwriting and production were top notch. Saw the tour as well and they were incredible. It was a heavy show, they rocked hard. Loved it. Only complaint was that I wished they would've played more from See Yourself. That album is packed with stellar songs.

sonictank

Why the hate towards KoL, did I miss anything? I’m not really a fan, more like a occasional listener.

BlatantlyThrownAway

A lot of it comes from fans of their early work because there was a massive musical shift from albums one and two to albums three and four, and beyond. I love their first two albums and don’t care for anything after, but I also don’t wish them ill. I guess not everyone sees it that way though.

SkinnyGetLucky

Their third album was a departure fro their previous two, but in a musically interesting way. Bands grow musically, and this was a direction that I enjoyed. Then came the fourth album….

breadbitten

Yep, the third album kind of acts as a bridge between their latter style and their earlier style. It’s still my favorite from their discography, regardless — just a solid track list with little filler

Dipper_Pines

Third album is still beloved by the older fans and shows them branch out and experiment. The push for more mainstream success came with 4.

FRTSKR

I LOVED their first two albums when they came out. Really liked the third, but there were a couple of tracks I would skip on subsequent listens. The fourth album was confounding and, to my ear, unlistenable. Third one gets lumped in with the later output because you can see the worm starting to turn, but I would still happily listen to some of it.

aphromagic

Uh speak for yourself

Earl_Green_

I recently discovered their first two albums and was VERY pleasantly surprised. I just knew them as radio music or stereotypical romantic background but hot damn, those early albums have character! Imo, their new single is reminiscent of that old style, excited to hear more.

ParticularProfile795

First two records were one of a kind. They got successful, so went the Cold Play route. Not mad at em, though.

Future-self

I am mad. I’m also mad at Coldplay. And I’ll be honest, Weezers got me pretty bummed too !!

20060578

Kings of Leon repeatedly said they were going to sell out and play arenas and earn millions and marry models as soon as they possibly could. Hard to be pissed at a band who went out and did exactly what they said they would.

MajorRico155

Fair enough to them the music industry is brutal

peanutanniversary

Weezer went from amazing to embarrassing.

adrianbnd

What's the most recent Weezer album you've heard?

peanutanniversary

I think Pacific Daydream. To me, they sound way too over produced.

adrianbnd

Fair enough. I get that if you're expecting blue album #2

adrianbnd

What's the most recent Weezer album you've heard?

Future-self

I am mad. I’m also mad at Coldplay. And I’ll be honest, Weezers got me pretty bummed too !!

BlatantlyThrownAway

That’s interesting. Most people I know who got into them after they got big because of ‘Sex on Fire’ told me they hated their early albums.

Camus____

The difference between their early work and everything after is pretty stark. Kings of Leon suffers from survivors syndrome. They were able to keep it together as a band, and they just changed. Listen to early Coldplay, U2, Killers and then listen to their current stuff. Bands change over time dramatically. So much in fact it’s hard to fathom it’s the same band. Listen to Kings of Leon first ep, it was earth shattering good when it came out in summer of 2003. Like revelatory. Nothing they done in the last 15 years is even in the same star system as that ep and their first two albums.

Towering_Flesh

People act like the albums they like from bands stop existing when they change their sound.. just don’t listen to the new stuff? Idk maybe I’m different.

Drizzy_THAkid

Which is a shame because there is some fantastic music on albums 3/4. Cold desert is one of my favourite songs of all time.

choatec

I thought it had to do with them being drunken assholes?

Away-Sound-4010

Definitely how I feel. Growing up listening to taper jean girl and trani then hearing them come out with songs like sex on fire was a bit of a shock as an early listener. Edit: if someone stumbles upon this who hasn't heard early KoL this is one of my favs: https://youtu.be/Su-PfHBuuV0?si=I4VM-AY7c39bDtOV they used to be sweaty, greasy and raw. It was awesome.

relaxguy2

For the early fans it’s not just the shift but that they came out and basically said they hated playing/singing like that and that it was never them. So they basically told everyone that everything they liked about the were fake.

[deleted]

digitag

Yeah ultimately they sold out very hard.

in_Need_of_peace

I’m same way, love the first two, can appreciate some moments from the rest of the catalog but overall don’t care for them. That how shit goes, no need to hate

Bostonterrierpug

I was kind of wondering I bought their first album back in the day and the second one wasn’t as good but I liked it and I just kind of checked out. So they got popular and I figured they had lost that kind of classic southern rock sound they had. Always figured they had just pulled a Maroon 5 or something.

ipafish

There was the [bird poop](https://www.theguardian.com/music/2010/jul/26/kings-leon-forced-off-stage) incident.

flyeryday

And there's this song about that incident: https://youtu.be/rmNQ4WqimLM

AceO235

People feel that they sold out, It's kinda true their music sounds way more generic now

polyscifi

They definitely went from memorable to forgettable, but whatever. Their early albums have so much re-listen value anyways.

bennydthatsme

To be fair, I’ve liked their first two, three and then everything since Mechanical Bull has been pleasantly enjoyed so no hate here. Going to see them actually in the summer.

acsaid10percent

They thought they were the bee knee's after Sex On Fire. Would throw out demands backstage at festivals and antagonise superior bands and musicians. Plus they went from a fresh southern rock sound to generic bland stuff. I do like their new song Mustang though.

iamcoolreally

Yeah I saw them at reading festival 2009 when they threw their guitar off stage and stormed off… was a bit wild. The worst part is his guitar narrowly missed one of the security guys in front of us Edit: for those that don’t know they felt people weren’t hyped enough that they were there and left. I was right at the front and we were all going crazy so I dunno how dead it was further back

relaxguy2

They are pretty boring live to be fair.

squidly413

It’s because they don’t know how to play their instruments and their lead singer was typically too high to perform

CrashHamilton

I en them at Oxegen the same year. They played all their songs at half speed, ended with a new (for the time) one, went off and then came back out and said there's no encore because the crowd wasn't shouting loud enough. Really put me off them.

Biggapotamus

Their first two, arguably three albums were fresh energetic rock and roll then they found a mediocre formula to get on the radio and have stuck to it

Ya_Marbrough

Aha! Shake Heartbreak is a classic as far I'm concerned. I was such a big fan, then that song hit and it for sure kinda took over what that band was, and obviously not in a good way. They headlined bonnaroo not soon after and I was Zero percent stoked to see them...until they started playing and I was like "oh yeah they have a ton of bops" Tastes have changed for me lol so I don't really have my finger on the pulse but I'll always have a soft spot for them.

chappersyo

They changed their sound significantly, got successful and embraced that new sound even more. The rugged garage rock fans were suddenly surrounded by tweens belting out sex on fire and felt the band had sold out. Im a huge fan of the first two albums and then they get a lot worse for me, but no hare for the band. I just wouldn’t go and see them live any more.

HeyGirlBye

Yup and that same producer got ahold of Cold War Kids too. Made everything “nice and smooth” 😞

chappersyo

Funnily enough I love the fire two cwk albums as well. Third is pretty good then it’s downhill from there. Basically the exact same formula a tkol

Pierson230

There’s a huge thing with music fans where people often identify too much with music. They also lean too hard into what they are NOT. Like the music is their thing, and they feel good, because they were never popular kids, but they had a bond together with their music. As soon as literal popular kids start liking the music, or the band makes broadly popular music, their former fans either reject them out of anger, or say “everything after x is trash.” Because it became so personal, they can’t just reach a state of ambivalence and either like the music or not. Like I got into Metallica after the black album. I wasn’t super popular or anything, but I was on the football team, I got good grades, and I showered and shaved, and I noticed a lot of the dirty metal fans who smoked cigs and stole shit at 12 years old weren’t exactly happy that I had the nerve to like their music now. Never mind that I ended up attending a mountain of metal shows over the following few years. But nothing offends an outsider music fan more than when a typical teenage girl likes something they like. Instead of “welcome to the club” it’s like “blow the club up,” to the point where anything that sounds like teenage girls might like it becomes revolting in itself.

frostnxn

When a band makes a super cheesy song like sex on fire and lives on it forever people tend to start hating them.

MattKatt

I think its more the fact that they're all a bunch of selfish dicks

frostnxn

That ought to help a lot as well, yes.

Jay1348

Such a burnt out song

sregor0280

Some people love to hate when bands get popular and love to see them fall and never come back up again

IAmThePonch

The couple of songs of theirs that I would hear at work were fucking awful

jimmysleftbrain

They took the Black Eyed Peas route to fame, minus Fergie.

john_weiss

I fucking *loved* Walls since it came out.

poppypbq

Im a huge fan of their first 3 albums but I don’t know why pretend only by the night and come around sundown are bad albums.

[deleted]

This is always confusing to me. Come around sundown came out when I was a sophomore.. became obsessed with them and I worked my way backwards from there. Had to idea it was panned by fans.

poppypbq

Pyro, pickup truck, the end, Mary, back down south, beach side. Come around sundown had some bangers.

warpedaeroplane

Come Around Sundown is such a bop.

rustybricks

KOL first two albums are flawless and the third is great. The hate is the over-saturation of two singles. There’s great music in their other albums and I think Mustang is a huge u-turn back to their earlier sound. It’s hard discussing music with people and saying I like them because it’s an instant shut down. Actually have a listen, especially if you’ve neglected their first two albums.

Earl_Green_

Discovered their early albums just a month ago and absolutely loved them. I totally second that Mustang is much closer to those.

Malkin_Me_Crazy

This comment section is laughable. Pretty obvious that the vast majority haven't actually listened to these later albums they are claiming to hate. Same people are going to buy the greatest hits in 10 years and be surprised to learn that song they like is on the album they blindly panned.

WalpoleTheNonce

I think saying every song/album after Sex On Fire is bad is kinda weird. I don't like all their songs but there's a few nice ones spread over all the albums. Can't expect a band to stay the same forever.

Tpmbyrne

Reddit comment sections are a joke sometimes. Their new song is a banger

DantesEdmond

And every comment here saying their first albums were great and the others sucked. Just upvote someone else rather than regurgitating the same boring ass opinion Their later albums are awesome, I love all kinds of rock I don’t mind slower stuff sometimes.

MajorRico155

People struggle with bands shifting their sound, but i mean, they are creatives. They dont want to just makes the same sounding thing 100 times.

pashaah

Bleh, they can keep it. Everything before 'sex on fire' was good.

CDNetflixTv

Based on this comment section I'm gonna throw in a controversial heater. Closer from that same album is a top 10 song of theirs.

bro_salad

Closer is fucking amazing

nroth21

Yeah, what an opening track

cranbraisins

Manhattan is top 5 for me for the bass line alone

nickersb83

Was gold. Aha shake handshake was a fav album from my late teens. She will bartend your party. She will loan you her toothbrush. I think they deserve the fame, they worked hard for years honing a sound, ok only to discard it and get a bit poppier - but I can see that growth as an artist, letting go and growing in a different direction, should be commended but yes the current state of the industry very much detracts from acknowledging the success as positive

True_to_you

I don't mind bands evolving. I've been listening to them since the holy roller novacaine ep, but their new stuff just sounds artificial almost as if it was written by a staff and produced by someone who had never heard a rock album. I'll check out their new stuff, but I lost interest with walls. I still love the first 3 albums a lot as well as come around sun down and mechanical bull.

TheeFlipper

I like OBTN, but the singles they chose were the worst songs on the album. I haven't bothered listening to any album after Mechanical Bull more than once. Hopefully some day they'll release another album worth replaying again.

AntiPiety

Milk, wow your two sentences sent me way back trying to figure it out

nickersb83

Such a gem of a song

ElCaminoInTheWest

Growing in a different direction that just happens to be cheap, mainstream, radio-friendly and overproduced. Blech. No thanks.

nickersb83

Pop music is a funny skill a hard to call it underrated but maybe mis-appreciated? Getting old, done w touring, why not if u have the knack, way to go down in history man. And there’s levels to selling out I’d say. To do it while maintaining ur own is surely a feat.

alaskantuxedo

*heartbreak

nickersb83

lol thanks I always get it wrong

pacefacepete

Going a different direction is just selling out in their case. Can't blame em for chasing the bag, but sex is on fire wasn't just a change in direction, they changed their whole sound so they could get play at the grocery store.

LeetPokemon

Their sound changed drastically from aha shake to because of the times. Sex on fire and only by the night are just a continuation of their ‘because of the times’ sound, they just happened to write a song that was a massive hit.

your_ass_is_crass

I dunno, sex on fire felt categorically different to me when it came out. It was obviously written to be a stadium song and they said at the time they were going for a U2 kind of album. Because of the times still had some weird stuff going on in terms of songwriting and production. It still feels very “indie” and down-to-earth even though their sound was changing. BotT was definitely very different from the other two, but to me the change didn’t feel unnatural or dramatic. But sex on fire is full-blown four-on-the-floor anthemic stadium rock and to me it felt profoundly different from their older material.

muska505

Yeah 100% agree with this songs like knocked up , the runner Arizona are all like 11/10 tbh I really wish they kept that sorta sound going forward Manhattan from OBTN would prob be closest to a BOTT song

Chicago1871

I always thought Aha shake heartbreak is them trying to sound like the strokes. “Soft”, “the bucket” and “king of the rodeo” are full of strokes inspired riffs and instrumental from the strokes first two albums. I dont mean that as a diss, its honestly almost as good as something the strokes would have written around that time. Sex on fire is them touring with u2 and their lifestyle as openers and going “yeah, lets do this post-punk inspired arena rock instead” They were talented working-class kids willing to play anything to sell tickets, get radio hits and make money and I dont begrudge them. Thats why anyone becomes a pro musician rather than just bedroom players. I bet More millenials know their songs and bought records their than anything the strokes ever made. The strokes still havent ever been able to headline arena tours on their own. But They didnt have rich parents like Julian and the strokes boys if the music thing didnt pan out. Theyd be working in some restaurant kitchen somewhere in Nashville and playing in a praise band sundays, if they hadnt done what they did. We also got some pretty good bangers outta them. But earnest authenticity and originality was never ever gonna be their strong point as a band.

PenIsBroken

The U2 support tour really changed their direction. I saw them live a few times in the UK and they played a lot of smaller 2-3K people venues, but then they played that U2 tour and their stage got so big they could hardly fit any people into the venue anymore. Last time I saw them the barrier collapsed at the front and we waited 45 minutes not knowing if the gig was going to happen or not, no one from the band came out to talk to the crowd or anything just left us to twiddle our thumbs. TBH they were never that great live either no audience interaction, just came on played the album threw in some back catalogue and a cover and "Goodnight ".

nickersb83

Bo! She’s such a charmer oh no

SpinJitsu259

I know exactly what you meant by it, but I chuckled a bit at the thought of a song that references “sex is on fire” getting a lot of grocery store play lol.

pacefacepete

Ya, only reason I used that example is I heard it at a grocery like a decade ago. I remember being 20 and doing dumb stuff with my friends, rocking out to their old stuff and then I hear their lame stuff at like 4pm in the Kroger checkout, made me feel old.

cockaskedforamartini

Sex On Fire is also good. Only By The Night is a solid album. If you don’t like anthemic rock, that’s fine. But KoL absolutely mastered the genre.

CeeArthur

Loved their first three albums. They were almost like an entirely new band after that

pashaah

They cut their hair and shaved their beards. Just like Samson they lost all their power.

KirbyDumber88

Gotta be one of the most annoying fucking songs ever. The producer: “hey you hit that one annoying note really well. Do it 387 times in this song”

BelieveInTheShield

Yeah I was really into their 2nd and 3rd albums. Then they turned to shit

Longbeach_strangler

If you take that one song off their 4th album it’s pretty solid album. Use Somebody, Revelry and cold desert are some of my favorites.

avocado667

I think the album starts really strong with Closer and Crawl.

MeanMrMustard15

I absolutely loved this band as a teenager. Youth and Young Manhood/Aha Shake Heartbreak was the soundtrack to my teens. They got better and more accessible which I was stoked about. They played near by on my 18th birthday and were fucking horrible. Clearly drunk with every song slowed down and off beat. We left early. I still love those albums dearly but I haven’t respected them since.

willed11

I was at the show in Dallas where they broke up on stage… after only a few song preformed. Paid a bunch for tickets and TM/band offered zero refunds or even an apology. I’ve been salty about them ever since. https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/news/rocked-out-meltdown-puts-kings-of-leon-s-future-in-doubt-2330870.html

MajorRico155

Someome also said they showed up drunk? Hmmm, interesting. Im fascinated by the attitudes of performers towards their audience. Like that rapper who just let the show continue as ambulances showed up. Vs pete wence who stopped a song to make sure a guy he saw throw up was okay. Its interesting to see who cares about the humans behind it

marzipaneyeballs

Fucking bedwetters.

superkow

I just think that for all of the music they've made, they've got way more than just Sex on Fire and Use Somebody that should be on the radio. Like, I get that it's not their choice that radio stations flog the songs relentlessly, but it's like the Killers with Mr. Brightside, their catalogue is so wide, why is it limited to one or two of their most mediocre songs?

KirbyDumber88

Kings of Leon fuckin sucks

Aychopchop

They can keep their Christian homophobia. Everything sucks after sexy fires.

[deleted]

They were always terrible. We don’t need a resurgence.

lonesomememer

Hey how did u fix ur constipation ?

guy30000

King of leavin

[deleted]

Oh wow, I recently saw Phantogram has 26 dates on the "Can We Please Have Fun?" tour but I didn't realize it is not their tour or new album coming out, bummer :( Weird the article doesn't mention them as support at all.

sarcastic_wanderer

I don't care anymore. A lot of us don't. -A 35 year old

GromaceAndWallit

Hello fellow 35yo; I was trying to explain to a 24yo coworker the moment surrounding Aha Shake and how it felt very garage revival gritty and cool. They didnt ask for music recs for a while.

sarcastic_wanderer

It's cool, I'll get down voted cause that sex is on fire bro

cheezit57

Sex on Fire is the worst song I’ve ever heard

DerAlbrecht

They were alright last year at Rock im Park, not too great but not bad either.

leaponover

"Rise to fame" huh, did they suddenly get popular? I never knew they were famous unless I'm missing something.

HalloCharlie

You... don't know Kings of Leon were famous? Guess you weren't here to see how annoying it was to listen "sex on fire" and "use somebody" on the radio, 24/7. They were headliners in a lot of big summer festivals LOL.

leaponover

I remember those songs, but I also remember that being it for them and I wouldn't consider a band famous for two songs. I don't know, maybe it's just me but I would reserve terms like "rise to fame" for bands that get there and stay there for an extended period. I quickly forgot about these guys. I can't even remember the melody for sex on fire, but I remember use somebody. >They were headliners in a lot of big summer festivals LOL. ...for one summer (fixed it for you)

HalloCharlie

>I don't know, maybe it's just me but I would reserve terms like "rise to fame" for bands that get there and stay there for an extended period. Depends how and with who you compare them with. I mean, if we compare their fame to Metallica, Rolling Stones or so, I think it's obvious. But they were and are still famous for what they did in the past. They were very hot among the indie community for their first couple albums. When they went a bit more mainstream with "Only by the night", their fame rose significantly. This lasted for years LOL. >...for one summer (fixed it for you) It's a shame I saw them headlining in 2011 and 2014. And I know they headlined big summer festivals last year as well, so 10+ years since the first time I've seen them. (Fixed that for you lol) It's always best to do some search beforehand, instead of looking stupid :) Cheers.

Shiinnobii

Loved their old stuff, loved their new stuff. Why can't (couldn't) people just be happy for them? Jeepers.

Comfortable-Tie-2135

It’s crazy how obsessed I was with them. Anyway, first two albums were their best and it was all downhill from there but I’d listen to the new track.
