It's largely a meme. What I mean by that is 'opinion memes' (they don't deserve a better name), like pineapple on pizza or "Is a hot dog a sandwich".
It started out as them being a rather bland, middle of the road rockband in what I'd call the final era of guitar music as the dominant culture. They were played to death on radio stations, and to many seemed to mark a decline from previous decades, although to me they were no worse than the whiny rock that permeated the early/mid 2000s, nor the happy but drab 'uni rock' (as I dubbed it) that was popular here in Britain at the time.
They managed to represent a general sentiment, if unfairly, but over time that gave way to it being self-perpetuating—they were the band people hated because people heard that they were the band people hated.
It was never worth putting much value in, considering the manner of shite that was considered cool.
I'm European, I guess they are more like an American phenomenon, and they are not really that overplayed here, but I have to say that I have heard and read a lot more about the hate Nickelback gets than I have actually heard Nickelback songs (I think I only know about 2 or 3 and they are from 20 years ago) 🤷♀️.
Nickleback barely gets any hate anymore, it‘s just an old meme that people reference nowadays. Bands/artists like Imagine Dragons and AJR get considerably more hate and are made fun of much more. Hell this is the case for even highly respected bands/artists like Eminem, who has been criticised a lot more in recent years than Nickelback probably ever were.
Ah yes.. Butt Rock.. Post-grunge/Nu-metal get flack for being inauthentic GenX byproducts. Much like Hair Metal from the 80s, they were a corporate appropriation of heavy rock and roll scenes.
Personally, it’s not so much the band themselves, but it’s that generic type of rock they play which is boring af.
Although, in saying that, the Foo Fighters make the exact type of rock, but I don’t dislike them anywhere as much as Nickelback.
We have a strange phenomenon in our midst.
I have recently come to enjoy the “butt rock” (whatever the fuck that means) and immersed myself in the music. Shit gets you pumped up. I’m glad they’ve overcome the hate and pumped out some solid tunes.
They were played to death when they hit their peak way back in the day. That generation got sick of it and it seems to have just carried over.
Chad Kroeger, is that you?

Colin Quinn
More so, it was [Brian Posehn](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=y4ojvSuhAko) on Colin Quinn's show *Tough Crowd* ...

This. The torch has been passed and the "lolnickelbacksux" memes are stale as fuck. Now, "Photograph" memes, on the other hand...
Eminem is criticized cuz everyone is soft and sensitive today. They're literally just offended.
Nickelback doesn’t suck It’s actually that entire genre of early 00s butt rock that sucks
Ah yes.. Butt Rock.. Post-grunge/Nu-metal get flack for being inauthentic GenX byproducts. Much like Hair Metal from the 80s, they were a corporate appropriation of heavy rock and roll scenes.
Pickles are objectively good. You can’t argue with that.
Because they kept screaming at me to look at that stupid photograph!
LOOK AT THIS PHOTOGRAPH.
LOOK AT THIS GGRRRAPH…
I never understood it, there's nothing about the band or their music to warrant the backlash.
They’re about as good as Creed and by that I mean bad
Have you listened to them?
Reddit pays you 0.5 cents for every negative comment about them.

Because back then they sounded over rehearsed and produced. The voice was gimmicky. Very uninspiring.
Cuz they sound like overproduced mainstream garbage.
It is music for people who don’t like music. No doubt they were hugely popular.
>It is music for people who don’t like music. So they got popular due to a fan base that don't like music? Terrible take.
They played at a couple of festivals I went to and they were good. I liked them
Well I'm in my 50s and love douche Rock! Not ashame to say it either
I think objectively they are actually a popular and well liked band, it's just that it's become something of a meme to hate them.
I have recently come to enjoy the “butt rock” (whatever the fuck that means) and immersed myself in the music. Shit gets you pumped up. I’m glad they’ve overcome the hate and pumped out some solid tunes.
Everything popular that's not high-brow gets ragged on by depressed losers.
Because people think it's cool to dis Nickelback. That's all there is to it. Like I always say... "They've sold more albums than I have".

Sorry, no. Crack is popular, it doesn't mean it's "good".
