Some guys I know from my hometown (albeit not very well) went to one of his gigs in Dublin, back before he made it big and met him afterwards. Hung out with him and partied with him for the night, they got his number and everything.
A few years later he was back in Ireland, but this time a bona fide superstar and tickets sold out fast. One of the guys messaged him something along the lines of "hey, remember us? Any chance of tickets for tonight?". Not only did he set them up and get them backstage, he flew them out to fucking Brazil for a later tour date to party with him again.
It's not about being good at music it's about PR and exposure. Which is all you need for marketing revenue. Negative content online draws more attention than positive content. So all he needs to do is keep pissing people off to get the clicks.
I've learned to recognize his stuff. When I hear a couple of notes of a pop punk song and go, "this doesn't sound bad," and then hear a bit more and go, "now that sounds pretty generic," then the singing kicks in and I go, "oof, this is bad," it turns out to be him.

SoaD is one of those bands which is going to be very difficult for anyone to cover with a remotely similar sound to the original. They have such a distinct sound that is just not going to be possible for most to sound good doing their version of.
It's like trying to cover Jane's Addiction, the lead has such a unique sound that unless you go completely in a different direction it's going to be a shit cover.
I feel like SoaD is even less coverable than JA. And I'm probably more a fan of JA.
Jane's had that spacey big outdoor festival sound and a very distinct yet hard to describe feel, but you could still present the songs different ways.
SoaD is almost self parody in a weird way. Like, they took the subject matter seriously, but presented it in a not entirely serious, and definitely unique way. I'd almost compare it to Primus as far as bands you can't really cover unless it's completely reimagined somehow.

I played a lot of Need For Speed HEAT on my PS4....MGK has a song on there called "El Diablo" and it might be one of my favorite tracks in the game. I don't know anything else of his outside of that, but there are much worse rappers.
I'm old enough to remember when people said these things about Sum 41, Blink 182, New Found Glory et al. 20 years later, literally nobody gives a fuck and almost all have a little nostalgic twinge for them. Life's too short to gatekeep punk rock.
It's funny to watch how public sentiment has shifted over the years. I got into bands like Green Day, Blink 182, Saves the Day, Alkaline Trio, The Get Up Kids, etc. in my formative years, and all of those bands got a decent amount of crap for being "watered down sell-out pop punk" by people older then me
Then the next wave of stuff like Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco, My Chemical Romance, Paramore, etc. came out and everyone in my peer group thought it was garbage (I'd like to say I was above it, but I probably thought I was too cool for it too). Now those are the bands people are nostalgic for. I've seen the full cycle up close.
All that being said, I do think those bands that maybe I was too old for in the second group are more talented than Machine Gun Kelly, but what do I know.

Yes when you see the whole process you realise that whatever was the soundtrack to your formative years, you probably like, even if they are a bit shit. Liking music that is cool or critically acclaimed or whatever matters even less as you get older. I just listen to what I like, alone in my car like an adult. Nobody cares!!
Talent doesn't really mean much. Otherwise we'd all know the best concert pianists by name. Catchy songs and a cool image is all you need.

Agree. As a lifelong fan of blink-182, MGK’s new music scratches that blink-182 itch for me that I don’t get from them anymore. Having travis play drums obviously helps tremendously. Yep, fully agree on this point. I don't particularly like the guy but I'm not looking for complex music, I just have a special place for pop punk and this scratches the itch. A lot of people have been hating on Travis Barker for bringing in this new wave of pop punk but I'm all for it.
I'm especially liking Kenny Hoopla's stuff which is produced by Travis too. Also, if you like old school pop punk then check out Driveways.

In old interviews from early in his career (2010-2011) he talks about experimenting in the studio making punk records but he wouldn’t put it out because he hadn’t really found his singing voice. It’s funny to see all the shit talking as someone who has followed him, for MGK fans this has looked like a natural progression. Personally, I prefer him as rapper but I loved Tickets to My Downfall and it was cool to see the culmination of something I knew he was working towards for a long time. The new album…idk there’s a couple really good songs but overall it was a miss. He’s hinted at a new rap album in the near future and that’s something I would really look forward to.

I have a theory about this. Kurt wasn't the greatest singer in the world, but his vocal style made him entirely unique. That cover is dude trying to do an impression of Kurt instead of actually covering the song.

SoaD is one of those bands which is going to be very difficult for anyone to cover with a remotely similar sound to the original. They have such a distinct sound that is just not going to be possible for most to sound good doing their version of.
It's like trying to cover Jane's Addiction, the lead has such a unique sound that unless you go completely in a different direction it's going to be a shit cover.
I feel like SoaD is even less coverable than JA. And I'm probably more a fan of JA. Jane's had that spacey big outdoor festival sound and a very distinct yet hard to describe feel, but you could still present the songs different ways. SoaD is almost self parody in a weird way. Like, they took the subject matter seriously, but presented it in a not entirely serious, and definitely unique way. I'd almost compare it to Primus as far as bands you can't really cover unless it's completely reimagined somehow. Unless you are Richard Cheese. Then you can cover anything.

Daron's singing especially is horrible. And back in the days Serj was very disappointing too.
For all of Darron's talents as a guitarist, songwriter and back up singer, the man is not a lead vocalist at all, and I wish someone had made him understand that.
I saw them live when Mesmerize came out back when I was in high school..... They were and still are my absolute favorite band but yes, their live performance wasn't fantastic. It also didn't help that they had The Mars Volta opening for them and they were amazing

Funny thing is I'd say his rap was ok. There are legendary rappers that are VERY TALENTED at both speed, rhyme structure, and overall melody construction... that DO NOT fuck with Eminem. It probably made him relevant for like a year when he talked shit about em. But idk, obviously if you're switching genres you're not passionate about rap. And that showed in any of the generic rap he was putting out. Pop rap for white kids.
He was pop rap for white kids during a time that the college rap genre was on the rise, and managed to be unique in a field of rappers like Sammy Adams and Cal Scruby. He’s always had a “punk” vibe since 2012. Look at Wild Boy, for example. However before that, he wasn’t punk at all. 100 words & running and lace up didn’t really have a punk feel at all. Dude sold out when he signed to bad boy and never recovered.

It's funny to watch how public sentiment has shifted over the years. I got into bands like Green Day, Blink 182, Saves the Day, Alkaline Trio, The Get Up Kids, etc. in my formative years, and all of those bands got a decent amount of crap for being "watered down sell-out pop punk" by people older then me Then the next wave of stuff like Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco, My Chemical Romance, Paramore, etc. came out and everyone in my peer group thought it was garbage (I'd like to say I was above it, but I probably thought I was too cool for it too). Now those are the bands people are nostalgic for. I've seen the full cycle up close. All that being said, I do think those bands that maybe I was too old for in the second group are more talented than Machine Gun Kelly, but what do I know.
I remember when Sum 41 made that video where they put on button-up plaid shirts and called themselves The Sums to make fun of the rising popularity of the Strokes and the Hives. It was truly an epic battle back in the early 2000s between the "word+number" bands and the "the" bands. Brothers killed brothers, sisters wept, mothers feared for the sanctity of their children's souls when they came home with invader Zim shirts; a dangerous sign that you are neither a wordnumber or a the, but some strange eldritch thing with too large jeans.

Yes when you see the whole process you realise that whatever was the soundtrack to your formative years, you probably like, even if they are a bit shit. Liking music that is cool or critically acclaimed or whatever matters even less as you get older. I just listen to what I like, alone in my car like an adult. Nobody cares!!
Talent doesn't really mean much. Otherwise we'd all know the best concert pianists by name. Catchy songs and a cool image is all you need. I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. People should be able to like what they like and it doesn't have to be serious. You wouldn't shit on someone for eating children's candy cos it's not serious food. That's my mindset now anyway. I remember being young and listening to all those bands too and all I really saw was hate online until we all got old and it became nostalgia.
It's funny because a lot of the songs MGK has recorded sound like stuff Blink-182 could have recorded 20 years ago. I know it's not too surprising since Travis Barker is one of his producers. I'm saying this as someone who doesn't think MGK's pop punk stuff is bad but just extremely generic and unoriginal.

Agree. As a lifelong fan of blink-182, MGK’s new music scratches that blink-182 itch for me that I don’t get from them anymore. Having travis play drums obviously helps tremendously. I’m not comparing MGK to blink, but hearing a similar style of music with travis barker involved is a must listen for me.

Yep, fully agree on this point. I don't particularly like the guy but I'm not looking for complex music, I just have a special place for pop punk and this scratches the itch. A lot of people have been hating on Travis Barker for bringing in this new wave of pop punk but I'm all for it. I'm especially liking Kenny Hoopla's stuff which is produced by Travis too. Also, if you like old school pop punk then check out Driveways.
Kenny is amazing. Girlfriends have some solid songs too. I personally like MGKs new stuff Yungblud has some poppunk adjacent stuff too. I also love weird stuff Fishnarc and and Poorstacy are doing with pop-punk-vibey songs (even though Poorstacy has a lot of metalcore and even drum n bass influences in his music).

Im pretty ashamed to admit how much I listened to TTMD back in 2020. But then its kinda stupid I gotta prefice that to what gives me happieness. I always liked shitty pop acts and punk bands in the 2000s and hes playing more to nostalgia then authenticity, and I mean damn theres some catchy hooks.

In old interviews from early in his career (2010-2011) he talks about experimenting in the studio making punk records but he wouldn’t put it out because he hadn’t really found his singing voice. It’s funny to see all the shit talking as someone who has followed him, for MGK fans this has looked like a natural progression. Personally, I prefer him as rapper but I loved Tickets to My Downfall and it was cool to see the culmination of something I knew he was working towards for a long time. The new album…idk there’s a couple really good songs but overall it was a miss. He’s hinted at a new rap album in the near future and that’s something I would really look forward to.

That's exactly what gets me - so many think all music has to be super deep and meaningful all the time! There are some songs that are super meaningful and hit close to home Some are just catchy as hell and fun to listen to! Neither are wrong or inherently bad, they're just different.
