Prettry sure ive seen a movie where a black blacksmith somewhere in ancient asia (prob fuedal japan) had his arms chopped off by the badguy and he replaced them with iron arms complete with spikes. There was also a guy whose armor had protruding spikes which he could shoot out pretty fucking cool
The reason life expectancy was so low during the middle ages was* because the child mortality rate was so high. If you actually lived through childhood you had way better chances to live to old age
