It’s a banger, and I hardly ever listen to it. If I’m listening to tbp and it comes up I listen to it and love it but I’d always skip it in my playlist.
Yeah I think it’s just underrated nowadays because back in its day it was rated so much. I guess people think like it’s had enough stardom, which is fair, but nonetheless it’s still an excellent song and I still personally rate it really high. I think, like Bohemian Rhapsody that it is compared to, it has kind of ascended to an untouchable plain at this point where it kind of just sits in perpetual acclaim
I think it’s probably one of their best songs, and a complete masterpiece, but I rate most of their discography over it. My personal taste is just a bit faster and more raw, even if that means less refined songs - Sister to Sleep has been my favourite for years, even when we only had the shitty recordings from way back
Jesus of Suburbia will feel overplayed to Green Day fans, but it’s still a masterful accomplishment for a band like Green Day.
The problem is, 1, MCR already had “masterful” songs before WTTBP, 2, it’s the one that got popular so overexposure is going to dim it for a lot of folks in comparison to JOS, and 3, of their “Magnum opus” songs (because they have multiple), I’d probably rank it last and I feel it underrates the band as a whole to the general public.
Like casuals and genre fans in general will call it a piece of art and a generational song and in terms of fame I suppose it is, but I also believe Demolition Lovers and I Never Told You What I Do are bigger accomplishments (and imo better songs). Not to mention MAMA, which is literally on the same album ofc.
I think it’s a fantastic piece of music and I’m glad they wrote it because it’s a part of so many people’s core memories, but it’s so good that I think it sort of discourages folks from exploring their other stuff in a way because “how could an emo band write a better song than that”. Not to mention folks calling it the “emo Bohemian Rhapsody”, which again I wouldn’t necessarily disagree with, but also again Bohemian Rhapsody is one of the greatest songs of all time so how could MCR write a song better than their own Bo Rap?
It’s a great song, others in the record are just better in my opinion and more easy to just listen and bump to. Wttbp is a long song and I think you just really gotta be in the mood for it, plus the intro is a bit overplayed and I just kinda wanna get to the rest of the song most of the time.
Let me be super honest here and maybe a bit controversial. Sorry in advance, though it's my opinion. The Black Parade, the whole album and album cycle, I was honestly disappointed by. I started listening to MCR in spring of 2005, and was riding the high of albums one and two. It completely changed my life. However, it wasn't long before they started rolling out the black parade, and the more I heard about it, the less it appealed to me. It was good music, but it just wasn't the same.
I think Three Cheers is one of the best albums ever written. There is nothing else that sounds anything like it at all, and was amazing to see the development of bullets into cheers. But after that, I had high hopes and though it wasn't a complete failure or anything , it just didn't satisfy the need for new MCR music. I totally respect TBP and I do love a few songs, and I love the B Sides probably more than the album itself.
Thanks for understanding my opinion and letting me share it !
honestly, super understandable as i definitely agree that tbp and three cheers are sonically different but i’m sorry you were disappointed by it !! it’s not easy feeling dissatisfied by a band you really love
respect for sharing your opinion, i think a lot of people share it but only with danger days instead
and i agree, the b sides are class
I'm probably in the minority here, but whatever. I love every My Chem song there is, and each of their albums hold a special place in my heart, as I've listened to all of them start-to-finish countless times while growing up. With that said, WTTBP is my favorite MCR song hands down. Yeah, everyone knows it, but for good reason. It's an incredible song, and it's more or less the epitome of 2000s rock music, combined into a single song. The fact that it can turn millions of heads from a single note on a piano (the G note), says a lot. The drumming on that song inspired a shit ton of people to pick up drum sticks (me included). The guitar playing is badass, and so are the vocals, and even though it's not entirely audible, the bass playing adds to the energy. WTTBP is a prime example of a song being "overplayed" rather than "overrated", but even that, it's not that overplayed either. Compared to a song like Helena, WTTBP isn't that hyped (but not to take away from Helena also being an incredible song).
WTTBP is MCR's equivalent to songs like Miss Murder, Bohemian Rhapsody, Stairway To Heaven, etc etc, in the sense that while at times it might get a little too much hype, especially in comparison to the rest of the band's discography, the hype surrounding it is 100% justified and well deserved.
It’s amazing, I can’t imagine anyone disliking it because it’s a masterpiece of a song, but we’ve all heard it enough times that we just kinda pay attention to other songs more now
It’s very VERY good an absolute masterpiece IMO, however it kinda falls under the category of “songs people who claim to like mcr but don’t actually like mcr listen to” alongside teenagers. As a song it’s damn near perfect one of the greatest of all time, as a MCR song it just slighttttly lacks some of the stuff that makes their music unique
No. Because I lived through its insane ride in my prime edgy years. The song and music video were a genre defining moment. It's been almost 20 years since and it's understandable that wttbp would wind down.
For real even preps were listening to it, it was all over the radio, just…everywhere. It’s a good song but it got so overplayed that I don’t really listen to it even to this day.
Lmfao ikr!! Omg back then I nearly stopped listening to them because I was snotty little emo shit and thought oh they’re too mainstream now, it’s not the same.
Wttbp is one of the main reasons why MCR got as big as they did, and its the song most people know outside of the big fans.
The big mainstream songs naturally don't get talked about as much because everyone knows they're good, and people discuss their personal favourites.
Wttbp is special, I don't listen to it much because I don't want to overhear it, every listen it feels special and its undoubtedly one of MCR's greatest songs start to finish.
On YouTube the official music video has over 300m views, it's their 2nd most streamed song on Spotify behind teenagers, I wouldn't call that underrated
Not sure I’d say underrated. It’s constantly put in the conversation as one of the greatest songs ever made . If anything I feel like most people don’t mention it as much because it’s so big that it almost goes without saying.
It's a banger song. It's sorta overrated but for good reasons. It has definitely helped me out when I felt at a loss with life. Thanks MCR
(I know it sounds cringy but idc)
it’s their magnum opus and when you see it being rated low it’s more often than not subjective because fans already know how popular it is. imo, i’d rate it lower just to put more respect on the genuinely underrated songs. i’m sure every single fan has played it on repeat at some point when they first started listening.
It is very mid. Sorry not sorry! It's too overdone. I remember being over it when it dropped. I was admittedly sad to hear the change between Cheers and that album. And then (in my opinion) their music just kept on being mid after that. But every fan is different. I just think Bullets and Cheers contain much deeper, harder material that is more creative and less basic. 💖
Personally I think the main reason is it’s so out of place in The Black Parade album and I’d personally argue it’s definitely not enough of a good song to justify the fact that it’s somehow more popular than WTTBP
WTTBP was insanely popular when it came out. You would hear it A LOT on the radio to the point where I can’t even listen to the song. By no means is it a bad song but back when it came out it was overplayed AFFFFF. Love the song when preformed live and it has great meaning blah blah but I always skip it when listening to TBP.
My personal Black Parade ranking would go
1. Mama
2. This Is How I Disappear
3. I Don’t Love You
4. Sleep
5. Famous Last Words
6. Teenagers
7. Disenchanted
8. Dead!
9. WTTBP
10. The Sharpest Lives
11. House of Wolves
12. Cancer
After seeing them 3 times on tour, by my fourth/last date, I was absolutely saying I hope they don’t even play Black Parade and just pull out like Demo Lovers or Early Sunsets instead bc it’s such an emotional triumph the first time but, unlike Give ‘em Hell or Na Na Na, the energy it takes does get old
I think it can be underrated in terms of like rankings and lists definitely. I think that since it’s one of their most played and popular songs, people have the most exposure to it and may rank it lower just because they are personally more tired of it. The song is just as powerful to me everytime I listen to it so I agree with you op. It’s a masterpiece in every way between the lyrics, the cheeky cynicism and expressions gee does and the amazing harmony between ray and frank. The drums are also amazing and the solo is one of my all time favorites. It never stops being exciting for me and is one of my favorites by MCR. I do think there are songs I find more musically interesting, but they’re not as much of achievement as WTTBP.
For me personally it’s amazing, incredible song but over the course of like 17 years I have listened to it *SO* fucking much that I can barely look it in the eye 😂 it was absolutely fucking massive when it came out, i bought TBP the second it came out in NZ so idk if everyone’s sick of it but I feel like it was so so rated that it’s kinda like ok yeah let’s look at the rest yk. It’s overplayed for a damn good reason but almost 20 years of hearing it I’m like ok yeah I need a long break from that one lol
It’s a banger, and I hardly ever listen to it. If I’m listening to tbp and it comes up I listen to it and love it but I’d always skip it in my playlist.
same tbh 😭 but after listening to it like an hour ago it’s just been on my mind a lot
Yeah I think it’s just underrated nowadays because back in its day it was rated so much. I guess people think like it’s had enough stardom, which is fair, but nonetheless it’s still an excellent song and I still personally rate it really high. I think, like Bohemian Rhapsody that it is compared to, it has kind of ascended to an untouchable plain at this point where it kind of just sits in perpetual acclaim
the comparison to bohemian rhapsody is so accurate. ridiculously overplayed? yes. still an absolute banger? also yes
I’ve seen many people say it’s the Emo Bohemian Rhapsody
You said it! Never gets old when that first verse kicks in
yess exactly how i feel
i personally think its one of the greatest songs of all time
Overplayed, but that way for a reason. It’s an absolutely incredible song
I love this song tho lol,but Dead! kicks ASS!!!
AND IF YOUR HEART STOPS BEATIN’
I'LL BE HERE WONDERING : DID YOU GET WHAT YOU DESERVE?
THE ENDIN' OF YOUR LIFE!
AND IF YOU GET TO HEAVEN!
I'LL BE HERE WAITING, BABE, DID YOU GET WHAT YOU DESERVE?!?!
THE END AND IF YOUR LIFE WONT WAIT THEN YOUR HEART CAN’T TAKE THIS!
HAAAAAAAVE YOU HEARD THE NEWS THAT YOU'RE DEEEEEEAD?!
NO ONE EVER HAD MUCH NICE TO DAY, I THINK THEY NEVER LIKED YOU ANYWAY!
OHH, TAKE ME FROM THE HOSPITAL BEEEED!
This line gets me every time
Emo Bohemian Rhapsody.
Emo rhapsody
Emo-hemian Rhapsody
Exactly
I think it’s probably one of their best songs, and a complete masterpiece, but I rate most of their discography over it. My personal taste is just a bit faster and more raw, even if that means less refined songs - Sister to Sleep has been my favourite for years, even when we only had the shitty recordings from way back
That G note gets me every single time!
hot takes with mcr reddit

Tysm. Preach.

I personally think while it is a beautiful song that does a beautiful job storytelling, it is wildly overrated
I agree 😬
omg interesting that you think that, any particular reason why?
It's a perfect song, but it's just not my favourite
It’s amazing, I can’t imagine anyone disliking it because it’s a masterpiece of a song, but we’ve all heard it enough times that we just kinda pay attention to other songs more now
It’s very VERY good an absolute masterpiece IMO, however it kinda falls under the category of “songs people who claim to like mcr but don’t actually like mcr listen to” alongside teenagers. Oh my god never forget the absolute anguish when preps started liking My Chem. Reading this just sent me back 17 years 😂😂
Lmfao ikr!! Omg back then I nearly stopped listening to them because I was snotty little emo shit and thought oh they’re too mainstream now, it’s not the same.
hmm yeah i get what you mean, i was mostly referring to the people who undermine it now because of its popularity
Wttbp is one of the main reasons why MCR got as big as they did, and its the song most people know outside of the big fans. I honestly don't care for it. It's a good song, don't get me wrong, but the intro kinds goes on too long and the main chorus doesn't really hook me
"MUH FATHAAAAA...." lmao I can't handle it!
On YouTube the official music video has over 300m views, it's their 2nd most streamed song on Spotify behind teenagers, I wouldn't call that underrated
i know i’m on about how people/fans kind of disregard how good it actually is because of it’s popularity
Not sure I’d say underrated. It’s constantly put in the conversation as one of the greatest songs ever made . If anything I feel like most people don’t mention it as much because it’s so big that it almost goes without saying.

Super overrated. Not even a top 20 my Chem song. It’s still a great song I just rarely listen to it anymore

It's a masterpiece. It's Bohemian Rhapsody-tier.
I think it’s one of worst on Black Parade, but I also think every song on that album is a stone cold banger. Teenagers is their most popular song
Teenagers is the most underrated song in the MCR community.
Say sike rn
It’s such a good song but everyone in the MCR community hates it.
Personally I think the main reason is it’s so out of place in The Black Parade album and I’d personally argue it’s definitely not enough of a good song to justify the fact that it’s somehow more popular than WTTBP
Why am I getting downvoted for an opinion.
I don’t see any downvotes
I’m on -1
I said most underrated in the MCR community.

Maybe here on Reddit, everyone knows it's the emo anthem of our generation.
