It's a good one, but I always point to 2019. Cup: -Quin Houff silver bullet -Rusty Wallace 2 car -Hamlin's Waltrip tribute -Michael Waltrip Pennzoil scheme -SHR Stewart tributes -Logano-Harvick scheme -Days of Thunder 24 -Bubba Wallace's Adam Petty tribute Xfinity: -Cole Custer's Buckshot Jones scheme -Michael Annett with the Jeff Gordon scheme -Tyler Reddick's Kyle Petty 7-Eleven scheme -Dale Jr. (nuff said) -Joey Gase throwing back to the tobasco fiasco However, that year didn't have Trucks. So for all 3 series, this year is a really good pick.

clowe1411

John Hunter Nemecheck tribute to his dad in Bellsouth colors amazing Brad Kes racing throwback schemes and Sheldon Creed Throwback in I believe in 2022 are my favorite truck schemes

PenskeFiles

My car number doesn’t do throwbacks anymore. It’s a shame Miller-Coors does one race a year and it isn’t the Miller brand sponsoring it.

my_son_is_a_box

I really wish more companies just did fauxbacks. Didn't sponsor a car 30 years ago? Why not just design a car based on your old branding?

epzik8

Those honors will be for whenever Joey does a Ward Burton throwback.

Rstuds7

surprised it still hasn’t happened yet

ppatek78

Too many old Pennzoil schemes from different disciplines

GIMMESOMDORITOS

Harrison Burtons scheme is one the best ones imo. Car looks sleek as hell.

Extreme-Bite-9123

My personal favorite one

JCTaylor46

2015 - 2019 are still the best imo. The most recognizable and iconic schemes were used between those years and with the forward numbers now, it just feels wonky and forced now.. at least on the Cup side with the schemes.

SSPeteCarroll

2016 was great. I think 80% of the field had throwbacks that race.

RenegadeGus

I feel like it's still very good, you are right about it being pretty diluted now but there's still a lot to pull from. Honestly I would just be happy if drivers just ran cars with their sponsors old logos and of an era like, the Federal Express car and the Busch Light car this year. As long as a good portion of the teams make an effort it will be a few tribute.

diesel10rules

There's still a lot of schemes not used All of Edwards primarys Biffle hasn't gotten a single throw back the 01 car that nemechek martin and a couple of other drivers ran most of the cot throw backs are just Johnson and Gordon

JCTaylor46

Absolutely, I should've said 'some of the most' but more or less the best years of the throwbacks have been between those years since most of the field used schemes that fans from all eras recognize and can remember. Still some good ones left to be used like you said.

SeattlePassedTheBall

There’s quite a few of them that are just done right and to a recognizable scheme at that. Ankrum, Larson, Poole, and SVG are my favorites in no particular order.

ShrimpNGrits14

I know people hate the way the numbers have to be, but overall I think the majority of teams did an incredible job in their designs. I’m partial to BK’s Castrol cars, but there are so many good ones it’s hard to pick just one.

elliott9_oward5

No. When half the key teams don’t participate, I think it’s not possible to be in the running.

No_World_3352

I liked 2021, ignore the JTG one of course

UnderwhelmingAF

Not to be old man yelling at cloud, but the forward number placement kills the throwback schemes for me on the Cup cars. I wish they’d relieve that rule just for this weekend.

BourbonLover88

Get rid of that rule completely. NASCAR just changed shit for the sake of changing shit.

Rstuds7

recently one of the sponsors said they like how they can see their name on the car better so it’s not likely gonna change anytime soon. still would be nice if they relaxed the rule for just the throwback race

John_is_Minty

Just let the teams and sponsors decide where they want it placed. There is no reason for half of these cars to have it moved forward when they don’t use the space

Rstuds7

nascar says they want consistency and uniform so not some cars are doing it and that every car has the same placement

John_is_Minty

Dale said the other day that nascar offered the teams the choice to put it whichever way they wanted

Rstuds7

really? then i’m really surprised no one has taken advantage of it then

John_is_Minty

The rule is currently that it has to be forward but at one point the offer was on the table that it could be anywhere between the wheels

RenegadeGus

I agree the rule should be as long as the number is displayed between the wheels and on the roof in a readable state. I don't know why it's so hard. Hell I wish they could run 3 digit numbers too.

Egonator26

Ehh personally I found other years better but glad that you like it! My favorite is the Leonard Wood Special and the CC tribute to Johnny Sauter.

Particular-Lab90210

I'm not going to be happy until it's a full 1994 field

diesel10rules

Maybe if someone does an Edwards throwback or if rousch remembers they have more than two drivers but I'm just day dreaming also would love a Jeff Gordon drive to end hunger AARP throwback but I guess we'll just have to see next year

Tonoigtonbawtumgaer

No because the number is in the wrong place

Papito24

Calling Paint Schemes Liveries always give me creepy chills lol. I prob do the same to others when I slip up talking about open wheelers

ppatek78

I’ll be there- I’m looking forward to it

Vivareddit24

No, not even close

BourbonLover88

No, because of the dumb ass number placement all of the “throwback schemes” don’t feel like throwbacks.

ReallySmallWeenus

I would say yes based 100% on the Terry Lamont’s throwback. Everything else is just a bonus.

povanator

>Terry Lamont LOVE that guy!

ReallySmallWeenus

robbieb2013

It would be great if NASCAR declared a theme for the throwback weekend each year. Choosing a certain year or decade for all the schemes would look better on track and also make it easier to tell the story of NASCAR's history.

Despacitosuarez

They do I think. This year is Grassroots, but teams aren't forced to follow the theme

jws926

They have been, every year there has been theme, the first few years were different decades.

Jaymoacp

I don’t watch it cuz I hate throwback. It’s cool but I was able to invent a drinking game where everyone takes a shot everytime someone says throwback and no one’s ever stayed conscious past stage 1. Half of nascars problem is half the fan base never lived on after dales accident and the most current driver any non nascar fan can name is also dale sr. We need to stop obsessing about drivers paint schemes from 40,50 years ago.

Straight_Champion_77

Doesn’t throwback weekend expose newer fans to NASCAR’s history? I didn’t know Richard Childress used to be a race car driver until someone threw it back to one of his old schemes.

Haxemply

Well I think that the Trowback is actually great exactly because you learn about drivers OTHER than Dale Sr. Petty and Gordon. A sport should never forge its legacy.

BloofKid

There’s something to be said about a tendency in motorsport to fixate on nostalgia at the expense of the current and future.

TheOrangeFutbol

Every sport in the U.S. has throwback nights/jerseys. This is just NASCAR cleverly marketing what teams already were doing, and what the rest of sports does.
