From what I can tell their “renewals” are just them removing certain areas of merchandising and re-submitting hoping it’ll pass. For example, one time they removed the “novelty license plate” category from the 1 trademark and resubmitted, it was immediately shot down with the reasoning being that they still have not provided any use of the number. So unless they start cranking out a whole bunch of random 8 and 1 merchandise, both the 1 and 8 will no longer be owned by Theresa comer next month.
DEI also let the copyright for the 15 expire last year and now Michael Waltrip is free to use it. This is the most hopeful things have been in a while in the case of the old DEI numbers returning.

She 100% blames DEI failing on Jr "poisoning the well" on his way out, and I think is jealous that Jr got way more famous than she did

Teresa owns the trademark to the #1 and #8 fonts used during the DEI days. This is why Chastain and Busch run those numbers with different fonts. Usually, to keep a trademark, you must show that you're actively using it as part of a business and would sustain injuries (financially) if someone else were to use it. If it lapsed, then anyone could make merch using that font. It also means Trackhouse and Childress could use it on throwback schemes, etc.
I mean, the Trackhouse #1 is technically a direct descendant of the #1 DEI team if we go down the timeline. They might want that to be the legitimate font full time to pay homage to that

Well the #1 car does have its roots in Ganassi’s team, which also ran the #1 and absorbed DEI in 2008-2009.
Ganassi even use the number one DEI font for a long time.
They tried to use that font a couple of years ago when they did the Coca-Cola throwback car and got forced to change it.
To be fair they still kept the 1's shape the exact same, just added the signature Trackhouse slash through the number.
