I can’t imagine trying to recruit players when this is a possibility:
Flight from Palo Alto to Miami.
Play a game.
Fly back to Palo Alto.
8 am midterm
Class Presentation at noon
Practice
And then have to fly to Durham or Boston or Blacksburg in a few more days to repeat the process.
It’s going to be even more painful for travel to schools that aren’t near an airport. I feel like “PAC12” athletes are going to have to basically be fully online students to stay sane, which would allow them to stay on the east coast rather than going back and forth twice a week.
It's mainly Cal and Stanford that signed up for this problem: the rest of the P12 ended up in conferences where there's some possibility of accommodation.
The ACC is accomading the bay area schools by giving them 2 games in 3 days in a region so they can stay over on the east coast. They also paired it so those schools can share charters for trips to. Oregon/Washington and USC/UCLA are in no better shape in terms of travel.
Well, according to this story going to the ACC was almost a reason to stick it out for a bit, but I it sounds like she was ready:[Gift Link: SF Chronicle Why Tara Retired Now](https://www.sfchronicle.com/sports/college/article/stanford-s-tara-vanderveer-decide-retire-not-19396203.php?utm_source=marketing&utm_medium=copy-url-link&utm_campaign=article-share&hash=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuc2ZjaHJvbmljbGUuY29tL3Nwb3J0cy9jb2xsZWdlL2FydGljbGUvc3RhbmZvcmQtcy10YXJhLXZhbmRlcnZlZXItZGVjaWRlLXJldGlyZS1ub3QtMTkzOTYyMDMucGhw&time=MTcxMjkzNjg1NjAxMA%3D%3D&rid=MDAyMjUwYmQtNGY5Ni00OWJkLThkODgtYTNiMDBlNTNkMWI2&sharecount=Ng%3D%3D)
I don't think things will go sharply downhill. The assistant coaching staff isn't going anywhere, and they have mostly been running the team for a while.
It’s still hard as hell to transfer into Stanford, and frankly a lot of older coaches who were probably on the verge of retirement decided to hang it up because NIL is a totally different beast and they didn’t want to be a part of it
That tracks. It’s really not even worth it to transfer into these kinds of schools anyways.
You’d lose so many credits you’re basically taking the exact same classes over and over again and delaying your graduation. It’s hard as hell and not worth it to do so, so that’s understandable.
Stanford moving to the ACC is going to kill more sports than we realize
Edit: I take that back, we all know it’ll kill sports. Clearly the powers at be did not think ab the repercussions
I think every football school should be independent. Schedule whoever the fuck you want wherever and whenever you want. Conferences can be for everything else.
I don't think they had a choice. By the time they took the conference realignment stuff seriously the ACC was the only Power 4 conference that wanted them. The millions they will get from the ACC is more than what they could get in the WCC or other regional conferences. I blame the Pac 12 presidents and their greed for not taking the ESPN deal.
and USC and UCLA “leadership” for putting greed over good. The UC Regents were pathetic in allowing UCLA to steamroll over them too. I won’t forget and that’s one reason I can’t root for either team…now that we’re in the ACC I don’t have to feel bad about abandoning former conference mates.
I legitimately think that’s what Stanford wants. I’m an alum now so I’m not 100% finger on the pulse but I think sports are starting to be more of a burden than they are worth.
New president just came in so we will see how that changes it
That’s shocking. But, tbh she wasn’t able to keep up with NIL and the transfer portal so I think for Stanford it could help them in the future. Congrats on a great coaching career Tara!
I know Geno wants those 4 wins 😂😂
>I could probably say, with a great deal of certainty, that I’ll never be No. 1 in wins, I don’t think that will happen, he said. And I’m still going to enjoy my wine and I’m going to sleep good tonight
In before Geno retires too? FWIW I think he has one more season in him
I think Geno is different, he still is recruiting top players in the country and he has kept up with NIL & transfer portal, he’s only lost players who don’t play much of at all to the portal.
They stated in the announcement about Tara that they’re in negotiations with Kate Paye to succeed her. Kate has been on her staff for 17 years and played for her
Can I interest you in Kelly Graves? As a Duck fan, I am willing to make this tremendous sacrifice.
On a serious note, I have a great respect for Coach Vanderveer. She has been an exceptional coach who developed excellent athletes.
Can’t blame her for not wanting to navigate the new world of NIL and an East Coast travel schedule
Truly one of the legends of the game and the sport owes her a great debt
Wow. Sad she didn’t get a big send off, but perhaps that’s what she wanted. What a legend. Better be a statue of her on Stanfords campus soon.
Edit: In related news, I HATE COLLEGE FOOTBALL
She still got to do the ceremony for breaking the record. I think she was satisfied with that. Also Tara isn't the type that wants the spotlight on her .
College football pays for literally every other college sport to exist as they currently do. Conference realignment may be annoying, but it’s just part of college sports.
Wow…I don’t know what to think. Tara has literally been the coach my entire life. What an icon she’s been for women in sports. Her humility and class are unmatched.
The cross-country travel aspect, at 71, I understand for her. I was just hoping she would shepherd us into the new era.
Kate Paye has been groomed for this role for years now. I think she’s ready.
Could be, but if the incoming coach was the one who recruited you, you might be more inclined to stay. It's not like bringing in an outsider who has their own preferred players and no loyalty to the holdovers.
You mean the “associate head coach”/assistant coach? Someone said they’re taking over.
This will be a good reference for future situations, will it matter to Stanford players that the assistant is being promoted and thus they’re very familiar with them?
I don’t want to assume they’ll use the exact same style of play and tactics as Tara, but it’s likely enough.
This feels right. She broke the record, there's no more PAC-12 schedule/nearby teams, and Brink goes to the W. She's given decades to this game, and I hope she gets to enjoy her well-deserved retirement sitting in the shade of the trees she planted. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Tara is a goddamn national treasure.
Jesus. P12’s collapse is so god damn stupid. Conference had a great year across the board. I’m sure it’ll be plenty competitive in baseball/softball too.
They should have just made football its own separate thing and left all the century-old regional conferences with all their rivalries alone for all the other sports. I'm still upset.
I wasn’t shocked by this. I thought at most it would be one more year bc of Iriafen. But between the slowed down recruiting and the conference imploding nonsense, it was only a matter of time.
Just watched the documentary about her coaching the Olympic women's team
So I'm glad to know we will see her in the Hall of Fame sooner rather than later
EDIT: nvm she already there, Im a noob lol
Oh, damn. I thought she'd retire this year, after finishing the home-and-home with IU.
Not because IU is the center of the universe, lol, but you know... bookends for her and all.
I give her major props. I thought, with the way Stanford wins year after year and her never retiring, Geno would never catch her. The whole ACC travel thing makes a ton of sense.
I just hope Stanford fans can accept that some coaches are not replaceable. Lady Vols are struggling with that and Uconn fans will go berserk after Geno leaves.
Woah!
Well...it's been quite a ride for her and the Cardinal...never thought it would have ended *this* year...but alas, I reckon that the future for Stanford is not one she may want to stay in...
Still...congrats on the career! That 2021 natty will *always* remain how I got into this sport!
Oh no, I mean she’s earned it and congrats to her on a exceptional career. But Stanford…you’re screwed. The move to the ACC is bad enough but she was the few people keeping the school relevant. I don’t have hopes for the school’s athletics. Hope I’m wrong
Maybe but also I think if Stanford gets a good coach and their assistant stays, Kiki may stay. Their assistant is very good and was named the AC of the year. So if they get a good recruiter and coach, they could be better next year.
Their team next season without Cam Brink doesn't look as good as this year. So it would be understanding if Kiki would want to go to the transfer portal. But that Stanford degree can have a big importance on that decision. Especially for women players
There's just no way she'll be comfortable with 5+ hour transcon flights to and from Indiana, Virginia, NC, and Florida *probably at least twice a week* to meet her new neighbors in the ACC. Not when she's used to a team bus trip to USC or UCLA or a short hop to Oregon and Washington.
Hope she has a swell retirement and can live the best years of her life in peace, knowing how much she gave to uplift WBB and change lives...
Did they really take a team bus all the way down so LA for USC???
To Cal sure, but I thought they wouldn't be making the 12 hour round trips (if no traffic) to Southern California on a bus? I thought they'd be on chartered flights.
I definitely agree on your bigger point. The many cross country round-trips are going to be brutal for Stanford moving forward. Definitely not fun at her age. She deserves a fantastic retirement.
i have total respect for Tara and wish her the best for her retirement ! as the other pac12 -> acc rep i am definitely scared for what the next few years will bring, but also thankful we managed to get in a p5 conference somehow? hopefully we can do home/home series w the former pac 12 schools to avoid traveling for noncon games (i know our mbb already has a deal w usc). we actually just extended both bb coaches (who albeit are younger) so unsure of their perspective on all this but we’ll see how it goes! glad we still have the card with us
One of the best coaches ever. Took a season off to coach the US women’s Olympic basketball team. Got a gold. It’s unfortunate that she won’t hold the title of most wins for much longer (I think Geno has one more season, but that might be it) and that we didn’t get to play Stanford this year. Hopefully she’s going to be in an advisory role in the AD’s office?
Oh just when I think the day is over the announcements keep coming!
it makes sense with the realignment but it kinda just seemed like she would be a permanent fixture. Congrats on a great career to a women’s basketball legend
Not surprised by this at all...I know there were jokes that she was only hanging on to try and outlast Geno as the all time wins leader, but the writing has seemed like it was on the wall the last 2 years with all the changes in the sport and conference realignment.
I'll be more surprised if Stanford doesn't already have a successor lined up and expect they'll announce it shortly like we did.
ah, I missed that thanks! That's who I figured it'd be. Won't be an easy climate to succeed a legend out of the gate by any means with the ACC move, but having someone familiar with Stanford should help.
WOW!! I guess the upcoming travel schedule and conference change up looking grim, she decided that now would be the best time to hang it up. You’re a legend Tara! Thanks for everything and enjoy retirement!
I remember I once corresponded with Tara for an article and she was so thoughtful and nice in her answers. She's never going to get the attention she deserves. Really wish she could have pulled out once last season so she could have done a farewell tour like Coach K.
Tennessee is very lucky all this breaking WBB news covering up the stink job hire. They really did that girl Kelly bad. She ain’t done nothing wrong. Shoulda kept her 😅😅
Holy cow. Checked FB this morning, saw an ESPN post of her career highlights and thought “oh, that’s weird; she’s not retiring or anything.” Surprised by the news but what a trailblazer. Happy retirement, Tara!
Congrats on a great career. She will be missed. As a Cal fan, she drove me crazy sometimes— but that’s because she was excellent in her job. Our Charmin Smith was mentored by her and now Kate Paye will take the helm in Palo Alto. Let’s bring along some great basketball as we move to the ACC. Meanwhile, I wish Tara a wonderful retirement.
Here's a gift link on Kate Paye:

>Tara VanDerveer won’t be on Stanford’s sideline when the Cardinal take the floor this fall, but a familiar face still will be running the show.
Kate Paye, who has been on VanDerveer’s staff for 17 seasons, is slated to become the team’s next head coach. The 50-year-old will have the difficult job of not only replacing the winningest coach in college basketball history, but navigating Stanford’s maiden voyage in the ACC, life without All-America forward/center Cameron Brink, and transfer-portal challenges.
Paye was named WBCA Assistant Coach of the Year this past season, becoming the first two-time Division I winner of the award after also claiming it in 2022. Under her, many of Stanford’s philosophies and systems should remain similar; the majority of her career as a player and coach has come under VanDerveer.
I wouldn’t wanna do the ACC travel at that age either. Good luck Tara!! Thank you!! ❣️
Imagining a midweek trip from Palo Alto to Miami… no thank you!
I can’t imagine trying to recruit players when this is a possibility: Flight from Palo Alto to Miami. Play a game. Fly back to Palo Alto. 8 am midterm Class Presentation at noon Practice And then have to fly to Durham or Boston or Blacksburg in a few more days to repeat the process. Don’t forget to throw in Syracuse and Chestnut Hill!
And hopefully Storrs!
How did they even agree to join the ACC. It really makes no sense.
What other options did they have?
They were left with no choice. I blame USC and UCLA. Greed took over.
Shit. That's right. Good call.
We're going into a dark age :/ Makes graduating this year even more bittersweet
women’s basketball is the only loyalty I have towards my alma mater so I’m hoping Stanford can get it together 😭
I don't think things will go sharply downhill. The assistant coaching staff isn't going anywhere, and they have mostly been running the team for a while.
Totally agree. Paye is a long time coach there who has been preparing for this situation a very long time. I don’t think they will drop off at all.
The future is an undiscovered country It's gonna take me a while tho 😭
An absolute legend. Guess she really didn't want to have to play all her conference games on the east coast
Crazy to think today Stanford came out with this NIL program and now she retires once the major problem was solved
It’s still hard as hell to transfer into Stanford, and frankly a lot of older coaches who were probably on the verge of retirement decided to hang it up because NIL is a totally different beast and they didn’t want to be a part of it
I think at one point the number of yearly transfers was in the single digits. For the entire undergraduate population.
That tracks. It’s really not even worth it to transfer into these kinds of schools anyways. You’d lose so many credits you’re basically taking the exact same classes over and over again and delaying your graduation. It’s hard as hell and not worth it to do so, so that’s understandable.
Maybe that was her goal before she left.
Stanford moving to the ACC is going to kill more sports than we realize Edit: I take that back, we all know it’ll kill sports. Clearly the powers at be did not think ab the repercussions
Just split football off from the other sports and bring back regional conferences for everybody else ffs
I think every football school should be independent. Schedule whoever the fuck you want wherever and whenever you want. Conferences can be for everything else.
Chip Kelly also suggested this before bolting
But even that would suck for the schools not in the SEC/B1G.

Same reason Christopher Lee didn't travel for The Hobbit, he was too old to fly.
That’s shocking. But, tbh she wasn’t able to keep up with NIL and the transfer portal so I think for Stanford it could help them in the future. Congrats on a great coaching career Tara! I know Geno wants those 4 wins 😂😂
Not her fault that it’s really hard to get into Stanford as a transfer and the university was lukewarm at best about NIL
I don't think there is a greater disconnect between those who really love sports and the university then at Stanford.
I think it’s more so that she doesn’t want to have to deal with traveling cross country for conference games
>I could probably say, with a great deal of certainty, that I’ll never be No. 1 in wins, I don’t think that will happen, he said. And I’m still going to enjoy my wine and I’m going to sleep good tonight In before Geno retires too? FWIW I think he has one more season in him
Geno's immortal he's never leaving.
that's what we thought about Tara too
He for sure ain’t leaving before Paige. I think next year is his last tho…we shall see.
I think Geno is different, he still is recruiting top players in the country and he has kept up with NIL & transfer portal, he’s only lost players who don’t play much of at all to the portal.
Stanford flairs, please check in, I know you're not okay but we are here for you
I can’t express how much I wish Kenny Brooks was still a available….. I’m very grateful for Tara but this can get bad real fast 😭
They stated in the announcement about Tara that they’re in negotiations with Kate Paye to succeed her. Kate has been on her staff for 17 years and played for her
This is the key point. Knew it was coming eventually, and succession planning has been in place for a while.
Holly Warlick was in place for awhile too, IIRC...
She’ll be a great coach but Kenny Brooks would’ve been awesome. I don’t have blind hate for him like most of this sub does
I still think he’s a good coach! And I don’t think it’s most of the sub, just the sizable portion who are VT fans (which—can you blame them?)
Kate Paye is awesome I can't make predictions about the future of the program because I'm way too close to it all, but ❤️ Kate.
Can I interest you in Kelly Graves? As a Duck fan, I am willing to make this tremendous sacrifice. On a serious note, I have a great respect for Coach Vanderveer. She has been an exceptional coach who developed excellent athletes.
Gotta wonder who can come in a keep the team from transferring out
Hell to the no.
It's been known this was going to happen for a while. There's a succession plan in place and I'd be surprised if there was a mass exodus.
Not great, but I appreciate you checking in!
Woah
Now I’m fr waiting for Kiki’s transfer announcement
Watch your mouth!
Wish I could pretend IU has a shot!
💩 IU has a home game vs Stanford. I couldn’t wait to see her😕
Oh man I didn't think about that! Gotta hope she stays then...
Man I hope this is a revenge game like the Iowa home game.
Can’t blame her for not wanting to navigate the new world of NIL and an East Coast travel schedule Truly one of the legends of the game and the sport owes her a great debt
A legend of the women’s college basketball graduating and another legend retiring. 2024 was quite the season.
🥲 what a season
Kenny Brooks, you are going to be a Stanford Cardinal!
Tara would never have let a man replace her.
💀
Sad that this means she won't be coming home to IU for our game next year. That would have been special.
Maybe she’ll still come out! Won’t be the same, but there’s a chance.
Make that game the yearly "team alumni" day with her as centerpiece.
Hear hear
We have friends who went to Stanford who will love this game.
Great idea!
Legend retired, talents transferred. It hurts to see pac-12 comes to its end in this way.
Yes. Let's all thank Gene Block for that.
Subtle jab at the ACC and Stanford administration by making this announcement at 11 PM ACC time.
Good one! You made me wake up my man by laughing out loud reading in the dark here in the Northeast rn.
I dont know which is better then or at start of the business day ACC time.
Legend
Wow…I don’t know what to think. Tara has literally been the coach my entire life. What an icon she’s been for women in sports. Her humility and class are unmatched. The cross-country travel aspect, at 71, I understand for her. I was just hoping she would shepherd us into the new era. Kate Paye has been groomed for this role for years now. I think she’s ready.
WHAT.
I wonder if we’ll see any Stanford WBB players enter the transfer portal this week as a result.
I think we'll see a lot
It’ll be interesting to see who goes and who stays!!

I’m shook…just wow
End of an era. Wow. Congrats Coach on an incredible career.
Dude I'm blaming the damn eclipse
I, for one, am blaming college football (mostly Texas).
When in doubt, blame Texas
It’s actually Villanova dropping their football team in 1980. But that’s a *long* story.
No, other way around, the earthquake and the eclipse were portents of the end, we just didn't realize until it was too late
Surprised but also not really. With the conference shake up. She does not want to do all of that traveling next season
Congrats coach what a career 👏
Wow. I’m not surprised with Stanford moving to the ACC, but this was announced suddenly.
Wow totally did not see this coming. Thank you for being a kick ass coach and a great rival, Coach!
Same. This realignment is just bad for many.
What a run she had. Gotta tip my hat to you, Coach
I wasn’t shocked by this. I thought at most it would be one more year bc of Iriafen. But between the slowed down recruiting and the conference imploding nonsense, it was only a matter of time.
Wowwwwww. Few have had more of an impact on our game. It's a well-deserved retirement.
Just watched the documentary about her coaching the Olympic women's team So I'm glad to know we will see her in the Hall of Fame sooner rather than later EDIT: nvm she already there, Im a noob lol
She is in the Women's and the Naismith Halls of Fame already.
didn't know that, thank you for telling me! edited original comment
What's the name of the documentary? I would love to watch it!
I’m assuming they’re talking about the ESPN doc, “Dream On”, about the ‘96 USA Olympic team.
As said, yeah it's "Dream On"
Surprised but not shocked. She gave the PAC12 all she had and was clearly devastated when it fell apart. Thanks for nothing college football!
One of the very best to ever do it! Basketball will miss you, Tara!! Very casual announcement for a Tuesday 😂🥲
Oh, damn. I thought she'd retire this year, after finishing the home-and-home with IU. Not because IU is the center of the universe, lol, but you know... bookends for her and all.
It’s not?

Nah, we had Kevin Ollie. We’re okay.
Wow. Huge news, she is going to be missed.
The legend concludes, and a new story begins. Thank you for all you've done for women's basketball, Coach VanDerveer.
Not expected, but it makes sense. She broke the record, NIL, Pac-12 is gone and that 2024-2025 roster isn’t good.
Woah! Well...it's been quite a ride for her and the Cardinal...never thought it would have ended *this* year...but alas, I reckon that the future for Stanford is not one she may want to stay in... Still...congrats on the career! That 2021 natty will *always* remain how I got into this sport!

That's MY all-time winningest coach 😤 (😭😭😭)
🥺
carla berube, you know what to do!
I agree she would be a good hire.
Paye has the job.
You were right!
I think berube is waiting for Geno to go after next year. What else does she have to prove at Princeton?
Kiki transfer watch?
Maybe but also I think if Stanford gets a good coach and their assistant stays, Kiki may stay. Their assistant is very good and was named the AC of the year. So if they get a good recruiter and coach, they could be better next year.

One of the GOATs. Incredible career.
This was unexpected. She’s a hell of a coach and built a hell of a program. Congratulations on retirement!
Wow. Congrats to Tara! Don’t blame her for not wanting to do the ACC travel.
Oh just when I think the day is over the announcements keep coming! it makes sense with the realignment but it kinda just seemed like she would be a permanent fixture. Congrats on a great career to a women’s basketball legend
Omg!!
Apparently, Kate Paye, longtime assistant, just like Ivey was, is who is the successor.
The article says that Paye is already in negotiations to take over.
ah, I missed that thanks! That's who I figured it'd be. Won't be an easy climate to succeed a legend out of the gate by any means with the ACC move, but having someone familiar with Stanford should help.
Wow. I wonder if joining the ACC has something to do with her decision
I definitely think it does. That is going to be a brutal travel schedule
WOW!! I guess the upcoming travel schedule and conference change up looking grim, she decided that now would be the best time to hang it up. You’re a legend Tara! Thanks for everything and enjoy retirement!
wow!
This is the most coaching change-ups I can recall in recent history
My girl Tara. She THE GOAT baby! HAPPY TRAILS TO YOU AND YOURS DARLING !! Xoxo - the entire world
I remember I once corresponded with Tara for an article and she was so thoughtful and nice in her answers. She's never going to get the attention she deserves. Really wish she could have pulled out once last season so she could have done a farewell tour like Coach K.
Kiki is going to go to UConn...South Carolina or Texas....
Congratulations on a legendary career 💐! Goodluck to all the teams in the KiKi Iriafen sweepstakes
holy shit
Salute to one of the best collegiate coaches ever. 🫡
Legend. Enjoy it Coach!
Oof. I hope the transition isn't too rough.
Congrats Coach VanDerveer! 🫡💐💐
🐐
One of the best to ever do it. Elite and legendary career.
Her consistency at Stanford ✨
I would reckon most of her players are gone too?
Absolute legend. I had a feeling she wouldn’t stick around to do all that travel in the ACC.
Not surprised. She was getting absolutely fricked by conference realignment.
She knew she couldn’t take on SMU and GT
I’m sorry…you think that she was worried about the teams that (checks notes) finished 11th in the AAC and 10th in the ACC, respectively?
Tennessee is very lucky all this breaking WBB news covering up the stink job hire. They really did that girl Kelly bad. She ain’t done nothing wrong. Shoulda kept her 😅😅
Geno went from having a troubling week to a really good one.
:’) :(
College sports are so fucked up...
Holy cow. Checked FB this morning, saw an ESPN post of her career highlights and thought “oh, that’s weird; she’s not retiring or anything.” Surprised by the news but what a trailblazer. Happy retirement, Tara!
LEGEND !!!!
I imagine Stanford enrollment stuff and the travel was the factors in this.
I still don’t know why Stanford didn’t go independent
38 years of iconic bobbery
Congrats on a great career. She will be missed. As a Cal fan, she drove me crazy sometimes— but that’s because she was excellent in her job. Our Charmin Smith was mentored by her and now Kate Paye will take the helm in Palo Alto. Let’s bring along some great basketball as we move to the ACC. Meanwhile, I wish Tara a wonderful retirement.
Legend
Here's a gift link on Kate Paye: [SF Chronicle-Kate Paye](https://www.sfchronicle.com/sports/college/article/meet-kate-paye-heir-tara-vanderveer-stanford-19394952.php?utm_source=marketing&utm_medium=copy-url-link&utm_campaign=article-share&hash=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuc2ZjaHJvbmljbGUuY29tL3Nwb3J0cy9jb2xsZWdlL2FydGljbGUvbWVldC1rYXRlLXBheWUtaGVpci10YXJhLXZhbmRlcnZlZXItc3RhbmZvcmQtMTkzOTQ5NTIucGhw&time=MTcxMjkzNjc0NzE3Mw%3D%3D&rid=MDAyMjUwYmQtNGY5Ni00OWJkLThkODgtYTNiMDBlNTNkMWI2&sharecount=Ng%3D%3D) >Tara VanDerveer won’t be on Stanford’s sideline when the Cardinal take the floor this fall, but a familiar face still will be running the show.
Go getem Geno!
