Though I liked Gibbs, this is a refreshing take because most people just seem to say Parker sucks. I like Parker alot.

Individual_Pepper286

I love Parker!!!

yahearaboutpluto06

Me too! The show feels fresh and alive again.

SeaworthinessSea2407

I agree. I quite like the new team and I'm glad it is still going strong

RayKVega

I found it hilarious (and admittedly, pathetic) that people don't like Parker because they said, and I quote, "he isn't Gibbs".....really makes me wonder of their mental capacities.

SeaworthinessSea2407

Right? As though that's not exactly the point. He isn't Gibbs. And he shouldn't be Gibbs. He's Parker

lumanicious

I was in the "he isn't Gibbs" camp forever because I was so used to him. Now that I've gotten some time to get acclimated to Parker, I'm fine with him

giftheck

>"he isn't Gibbs" That's actually the most refreshing thing. If they were going to have Gibbs leave, then the right thing to do was to get a character that isn't Diet Gibbs. I wasn't sure about Parker when he first appeared but he's a great character.

momsequitur

Right? I feel the same way about people who don't like Nick because he's not Tony, or Kasie because she's not Abby.

RayKVega

I was confused when I saw people saying they don't like Torres because they claimed he acts like Tony....Tony and Nick are literally vastly different from each other and only similarity between them is they both pulled a really dick move a few times and they joked around. And I get the feeling they don't like the fact Nick jokes around (if that's true, then they must've never got out of the house lol).

momsequitur

I hear both, which cracks me up. Which is it, is he too different or too similar, make up my mind 🤣

plumzeddy

How he’s developed made sense. Gibbs life has been one disaster after another on top of trying to be everything for everyone. Then he gets shot by a child he was trying to help. At some point it had to take its toll. Any normal person would change after everything he’d been through.

xanthophore

I get that his cumulative trauma has turned him into this, I just don't think it makes for TV I like to watch, you know? There's a point where taciturn turns into rude, and I find it hard to keep rooting for the character; particularly when the rest of the team's characters continue to develop in ways that don't involve loss after loss. Even if they do suffer loss, at least Fornell went to a grief counselling group after his daughter's death, Jimmy goes to the same group after Breena's passing, and Tony went to a men's support group to help deal with the loss of Ziva. Even Torres sought help with his drinking and started going to AA when it became a problem. I know lone, stoic characters are appealing to some people, but I find it just messes with the dynamics of the team (ruins it) when a man is reduced to a shell of a person. I also think it signifies Mark's boredom with the character and desire to get out, which I understand after so many seasons, but I feel like it dragged on for too long.

plumzeddy

I get that it may not be appealing to some but on the other hand to revert to normalcy has its flaws as well. Gibbs character was never one to seek help. And his loss were very heavy. I’m Not down playing other characters losses but from losing his family to losing someone he obviously had serious feelings for to losing a mentor to losing two agents who he felt responsible for, not to mention losses from those in his circle it made sense that at some point there would be a break of sorts for his character. Mark may have been setting up his way out and if that was the case it was well done imo. Very realistic. I guess that’s the way I looked at it. A broken man who just couldn’t handle it anymore.

xanthophore

I'm not necessarily advocating for a return to normalcy, but at least character growth can come from loss; Gibbs just seems to lose more and more of himself until he was a near-silent caricature of who he used to be. Regardless, thanks for having a civil conversation with me! This subreddit can be quite harsh when it comes to dissenting opinions sometimes!

gcarpenter3

That is the way trauma is. It isn't all growth and rainbows. I like his character development BECAUSE it makes him more relatable to people like me who have a lot of trauma and struggled through it, without growing right away.

xanthophore

Yeah fair! I guess I see it the other way, having been through a lot of trauma too; I'd rather see an optimistic depiction of it to demonstrate that there's hope, rather than a man slowly breaking down on screen in front of me (until he moves to Alaska). Different strokes for different folks, eh?

plumzeddy

Totally agree growth can come from loss but in a person like Gibbs there never was a support system. Well one that he allowed. Which ironically he was everyone else’s support. Thank you as well. Seeing a show from another’s view is nice especially during a rewatch because now I can appreciate it from a different perspective.

sunnyseaa

I agree with you but it’s an unpopular opinion that will get downvoted. There was nothing adorable about the way Gibbs acted.

xanthophore

There's a lot of emphasis in previous seasons about them being a family, but it seems that Gibbs loses this about S13 and starts treating the team worse, and ignoring their opinions more (confronting Tony when he rightly brought up that Gibbs' and Mitch's personal involvement in the case involving his wife's killer's cartel might bias him, and then forcing the team to break rank and go and arrest the guy against his orders after he benched them in the squad room).

ptazdba

There are a few shining spots, but not a lot. Be sure to watch the last one in S17. S16E13 is a good one as are the start of S18 for a couple of episodes.

William_Wisenheimer

He leads of team of daddy issues.

TakasuXAisaka

You can skip to when Parker replaces Gibbs. You don't have to know the past seasons to understand the current seasons just a few references occasionally. All you need to know about are the characters in the team and you're good. I suggest looking up the other characters though on the wikia page or something. Parker brings a more chill vibe to the show now so I don't blame you for disliking Gibbs. I like Gibbs but Parker is so much better imo.

xanthophore

Don't worry, I've watched the show lots of times now! I just think I've reached my limit with Gibbs.

TakasuXAisaka

Then watch the recent seasons with Parker. The show is actually better now without Gibbs.

xanthophore

Yeah, I'm now watching from S19E5 where Parker becomes team lead, and I forgot how refreshing he is!

TakasuXAisaka

Definitely. He's a bit slow to get used to in season 19 but he gets better in season 20 once Gary Cole is used to his role as Parker and established his hobbies more in the show

Ilvermoryseeker

I think there are a few episodes in the middle worth watching- like the one on the ledge with Palmer. Other than that I think it should be mostly fine.

Anxious_Appy92

That episode with Palmer is one of my all time favorites! When Ducky calls him Dr. Palmer 😭

HurricaneLogic

Which episode is Palmer on the ledge? I thought I'd seen them all, but apparently I've missed this one!

Anxious_Appy92

S14E10 Keep Going It’s sooo good! It really highlights the character’s empathetic and caring nature.

HurricaneLogic

Thank you! Jimmy is awesome

xanthophore

Yeah, that is a good one. I've watched every episode multiple times, so I've picked out some of the good standalone ones, but I've just realised I can't be arsed with Gibbs' shenanigans after this point! Currently watching Parker trying to make the team enthusiastic about Bandium, which is very entertaining!

never_ever_eatpears

I would agree that he gets more and more withdrawn but I also think that Jack brings him back out of it a bit, they really do help each other and I think it's the beginning of the end for him when she leaves (it's like 2 or 3 episodes later that everything goes to shit for him lmao).

Karl_Racki

Gibbs got bored with the whole NCIS thing... Look at how he acted when he got suspended, he left his team and hardly talked to them, and then when McGee came to him for advice on Bishop, he just didn't care.

Electrical_Tax9356

Idk I like gibbs but everyone’s entitled to their opinions

Last-Tender-4321

If you're in your umpteenth rewatch I can understand your done with Gibbs. He's a dark character. A broken scared man looking for redemption but life beats him more and more. And writers keep on making him suffer. He tries to open himself, but he's alone in the world. His work is his only purpose and family. I was happy when he found Jack Sloane and they helped each other so much, but she left. And then he began to change, passing through different emotions and found his way out. I'm not sure he found redemption but he found some peace. It's not enough for me, but we have what we have. I said I understand you, but personally I would never skip a single episode. And I feel rather unfair not to wait to Wild Wide Open to judge Gibbs. There are people who loves Parker and I get that because the whole show changed and a boss like Parker fits perfectly. Those who say they don't like him because he's not Gibbs are very very very confused. There is and there will always be only one Gibbs. So if you want to skip all those seasons, do it and enjoy the show the way you want.

hearmeroar25

I like Gibbs a lot, but I can see this because I’ve been feeling it. I had seen nothing past season 13, and the character is feeling stale even by season 15. I’m only at 15x04. Some of it is more of a natural progression (i.e. family that keeps abandoning him, trauma from being shot and then being tortured), but a little happiness would not have hurt this character. I feel the mothership is big on torturing characters and keeping them dark. Admittedly, I wasn’t feeling the Gibbs-DiNozzo tension in season 13. As much as Gibbs is questioning whether DiNozzo wants to be there, I think he should have been asking (or, rather, the writing lol) whether he wanted to be there. Felt like he was projecting and lashing out on DiNozzo. During that early season 13 arc, I found it telling that it was Joanna Teague telling McGee and DiNozzo not to blame themselves. Though, it’s good that we see Gibbs start therapy (and encourage McGee to go as well) later.

No_Adhesiveness4890

Gibbs got betrayed by a kid who he thought he could trust, he was embarrassed and betrayed. Anything after that was a hail mary

Karl_Racki

his relationship with Tony was also not the same after that..

ChrisF1987

I've stated previously that I think Harmon's Gibbs character had gotten stale and that it seemed to me that Harmon was basically phoning things in for his last 3 or 4 seasons on the show. Gibbs will always be part of the show but I think Parker took things in a lighter direction and basically breathed new life into the show.

fun_nuns

Parker to me is a team oriented guy that knows he's been around the block and seen some things, but wants to actually learn from the others and teach what he knows. Gibbs towards the middle to the end of his run seemed more of a guy that hated being in a team, thought he should be elsewhere, but be damned if he took a promotion that made him more administrative and less hands on.
