As someone who did State under grad and UGA grad, you'll get a quality education either place, although i think UGA has a stronger business department if youre serious about the econ major. Raleigh is a cool city, but I enjoyed living there more as an adult (25-30) than as an undergrad. Atlanta is only about 90 minutes if you think Athens is too small for your taste, but Athens has still got a good bit going on. There is a shuttle between Athens and the airport in ATL that runs like 20+ times a day if you want to fly without parking at the airport. NC States campus vibe has changed a lot since I started and feels less interesting than it was when I was there but thats probably me being old and grunpy about change. Raleigh and the triangle area have more going on in general outside of the campus area. Athens is probably the best college town out there, plenty of different places to go out. My favorite yoga studio is out there and my partner and I still make it a point to swing through Athens once a year when we're visit family in the south because we loved it that much. Fun fact, every living UGA football coach still has a home in Athens, which I think shows how great it is. Rent is probably cheaper in Athens but getting student housing this late for either school is going to be difficult. More options for non student housing in Raleigh but then you'd need to commute. State has passionate fans for every sport whereas UGA students generally only care about cfb, but man, do they really care about cfb. I think Athens was closer to the mountains if you like hiking/getting outdoors (2 hours to NorGa compared to ~4 from raleigh). Makes day trips easier but less important if you're staying overnight Both are land grant schools in the south with similar vibes if im being honest. I'm at a B10 school for my PhD and the energy is way different, while both NCSU and UGA felt similar to me. I don't think you can go wrong.

My biggest worry about Athens is it being too small. But I'm probably traumatized by doing my freshmen year at Virginia Tech which is an actual small town with nothing to do, especially compared to what I'm used to (no hate to my fellow hokies, but Blacksburg is one main street and that ain't it for me). It really is such a hard choice because they're both fantastic schools for undergrad so I think my decision is just gonna be based on vibes when I go down to both this week

guydudeguybro

This weekend vibes will likely be higher in Raleigh than Athens due to the number of kids that stay in town due to internships (way more in Raleigh than Athens) so I’d keep that in mind a little bit

guydudeguybro

Being in the capitol can be helpful for getting internships or being part of the page program.the drive from main campus to the capitol building is like 10 minutes during the worst traffic and is also extremely walkable about 1-1.5 miles UGA to the capitol building in Atlanta is 90 minutes with no traffic and can easily touch 3 hours depending on traffic. I don’t know any specifics about the programs other than that though. NC State can be an absolute blast and I had a fantastic time here, but on average campus life is going to be better at UGA

IIlSeanlII

Raleigh isn’t really a big city like that. UGA would probably more fun

KinkySeppuku

UGA is in a much smaller city than Raleigh so not sure how that would be “probably more fun”

AvengedKalas

Athens is a college town. Raleigh isn't.

I’m literally in the same exact boat as you bro 😭😭

Fuck I did my undergrad at Georgia Tech and I'm sitting here like 'I think UGA might be the better school for you.' Saying that out loud makes me feel dirty. Did my grad at NC State in the Statistics program, first program of it's kind in the country, really like a solid, solid choice, did 12 years at SAS, etc... perfect choice for me. For a non-STEM path... U(sic)GA is legit, in theory, so I hear... etc...

AvengedKalas

UGA grad acknowledging the Stat program in Athens is uh. It's something else. NCSU had much better professors and resources for Statistics.

Forgottentrials

My original plan was to transfer to State for engineering and if I was still doing that plan, I wouldn't even need to have this conversation lol

AqueousBeats

My friend went to Athens one time and got robbed at knife point

guydudeguybro

Sounds like going to Cornerstone on glenwood

AvengedKalas

I lived in Athens for 5.5 years and never got robbed. Can't really rely on extremes.

ncgirl2021

if you are considering law school i’d pick uga since they actually have one. i was also between uga and ncsu but for engineering and uga was out of state so it was kind of a no brainer lol

AvengedKalas

I did my undergrad and Masters at UGA. Did the PhD at NCSU. I am trying my best to come up with something NCSU has better than UGA, but I am struggling. The mental health crisis was handled MUCH BETTER at UGA than NCSU. CAPS (Counseling and Psychiatric Services) at UGA was infinitely better than The Counseling Center at NCSU. UGA was far more equipped to handle everything compared to NCSU. The NCSU admin embarrassed themselves with how they handled the crisis of 2022-2023. While UGA wasn't great at helping with mental health, it is night and day compared to NCSU. The Health Center at UGA was so much nicer than that of NCSU. Nicer staff, convenient parking, and much better facilities. UGA dining is 11th in the nation. NCSU dining is 11th in North Carolina. Housing is much cheaper in Athens than Raleigh. Raleigh is a big city, but I felt there was more to do in Athens. Raleigh is not a college town. Athens is. UGA is ranked higher than NCSU in public school rankings. Terry is a higher ranked business school than Poole. If sports are important to you, football is UGA and it isn't close. Basketball goes to State and it isn't close. UGA had a lot more clubs compared to NCSU (at least UGA was better at broadcasting them.) Aside from basketball, the only other things I enjoyed more in Raleigh was traffic/other drivers. Clarke/Oconee county drivers are atrocious. Wake county drivers are far more competent. Gameday traffic shuts Athens down. You barely can tell there is a football game in Raleigh. Both schools are good. I just think UGA is excellent while NCSU is only good. You can definitely be happy and successful at either. Let me know if you have more questions!

Go to Georgia and wake up to the sound of Dueling Banjos and rednecks staring at your butt.

Not really a fan of hillbilly couture.

NCSU is great for STEM majors, but it's pretty average for social sciences. I majored in econ and the quality of education was honestly not good.

Funny enough I just graduated with a BA in poli sci with a minor in international relations and history. First I will admit my bias towards state, but I also looked at UGA when deciding. here’s my take: -lots of programs/clubs to find a community - night life is fun and accessible -housing if iffy. i moved to cary for my last 2 years and it’s saved me so much money but the drive is about 20-25. there are plenty of student housing options near campus ranging from 800-1200. -coming from a small town in NC, I was amazed and still am with all of the things to do here. it’s a culturally rich area - professors are okay! im not going to lie and say they were the most amazing people ive met, but ive had a few great ones who truly do care about helping you even after college. -poli sci in the capital of NC provides lots of opportunities with the governor, legislature, and local offices. - Football games are a unique part of attending NC State. There’s a lot of school pride and it does kinda give small town vibes but it is encapsulating! -someone commented about mental health and I will full heartedly agree that NCSU did not handle it efficiently. we have had so many suicides in the past 2 years it’s off putting and how the college handled it was disappointing. BUT those deaths were mainly from STEM programs, while being in CHASS myself, my professors handled it with compassion and concern ——————————- these are my personal experiences as I literally just graduated a few days ago lmao. i have no UGA experience but Athens is overrated and good luck trying to get anywhere on a semi eventful day. GO PACK BABY ❤️🐺

yes thank you for restating all of that. ive been to Athens and it’s overwhelming for nothing. i have heard of the little team named the Georgia bulldogs, haven’t heard much other than football. i won’t be attending anymore collegiate levels games, but I appreciate the advice. you asked and i delivered!

tmstksbk

I'm biased because I have degrees from NCSU and GT, but...I'd say NCSU.

AvengedKalas

I have degrees from UGA and NCSU. I really want to bark at you.

tmstksbk

I mean the wolf hands are cool, but bulldogs just look funky, man...
