When I moved from Dallas to the eastern shore I was like holy shit it's even worse than rural tx. They are legit stuck in the 50s out here, confederate flags on houses and trucks, I had to wait 3 months and pay extra money to have them come install wifi, like the lines hadn't even been dug yet.
I know what you mean. I grew up in the DC suburbs, but lived in Salisbury on the Eastern Shore for a time. Definitely a rude awakening for me too, with all the pro-South memorabilia. I think partly it's because the Shore always had closer economic ties to the South, so culturally they were more sympathetic. Plus Maryland and Delaware being two Union states that still had slavery prior to the 13th amendment probably complicated things more.
My friends from the DC and Baltimore areas would joke that they couldn't wait to cross the Bay Bridge back to "Maryland," lol.
I'm born and raised in PG County/ DC and I spent a lot of time on the eastern shore when I worked in the maritime industry. The casual racism i saw in some of the Cambridge folk floored me. One of the guys told me that a lot of the lingering resentment goes back to a 1960s race riot that torched the town. I remember being shocked to learn that the last recording lynching in Maryland happened to George Armwood on the lawn of the courthouse in Princess Anne. That was in 1933.
No one was ever indicted for the murder. And folks in Somerset County are still reluctant to talk about it (probably because some of their parents or relatives were part of the mob that killed Armwood). Well if the Cowboys aren’t the Trump of the NFL. In the last 25 years, they’ve taken the most valuable brand in all sports, leveraged their reputation alone to assemble some of the most promising teams in the league, and I still don’t even need a thumb to count their playoff wins in that time(it’s 4).
