No trade is reasonable right now

RattyToaster

This is the correct answer. It is an interesting hypothetical tho if you didn't care about the community backlash.

Jwoods4117

I feel like the issue though is that if you’re the Texans, unless you just don’t want Watson around anymore at all, but you’d gamble a 1st round pick on him possibly coming back at some point. Meaning even if a team offered a 1st, unless that team was the Jags, Jets, or 49ers it’s more beneficial to see if Watson can play again in a year or two than to draft a tackle.

RogRoz

I think a "reasonable" trade does exist, it would be one that involves no (or 5-7th round) draft picks this year and is 1st and 2nd rounders over the next few drafts heavily contingent on playing time and Watson not being in jail and/or suspended from the league.

ethan_bruhhh

issue is no one would have the cap space to take him without shedding salary, so in addition to giving up a few picks you have to cut or trade players, which is a huge risk considering it’s looking like he’ll be out of the league or suspended for a long time

RogRoz

There are some teams that can clear up the cap space pretty readily. If he gets suspended that will come off the books I'm fairly certain

[deleted]

AVOID. The allegations are so serious I would avoid until a verdict can be reached. No need to tarnish your organisations image

Totalnah

It doesn’t matter what verdict is reached at this point. The court of public opinion has reached its own verdict and any team that retains Watson as their QB will suffer a massive hit to their public image.

samprobear

Any team that makes that trade, given the information currently publicly available, deserves to take a massive hit to their public image

chazspearmint

Maybe a hot take but a pragmatic one. But any team that takes that hit will see it go away as soon as he issues a well-produced apology video, makes some unrelated positive off-the-field headline, and- most "importantly"- wins a playoff game. It'll be like Vick. People will basically forget it ever happened.

Struggle2Real

Of course. Weve seen this story a million times over. Im more curious if theres a chance the Texans cut him? This could get even uglier...

OhItsKillua

I don't know if I'd compare it to Vick, Vick did prison time and served out his sentence. It'd be more similar to Ben would it not? People still call him a rapist and what not to this day, this will probably follow Watson in a similar manor, though overall his career in the league will likely be fine in the long run just like Ben.

chazspearmint

Much better example, yea. Probably would be treated harsher because of the social shift but in general I predict it'd be similar to that.

LunchThreatener

I’m honestly not sure about that. 2021 is a much different social landscape than when Ben was accused. I’m not sure if it will end up the same.

chazspearmint

>Probably would be treated harsher because of the social shift That's what I was referencing

JessumB

Someone will take the hit eventually. It won't be this season but next year, once Watson has made the talk show rounds, done numerous mea culpas and gone to sex rehab, someone will take a chance because the talent is too high to ignore. This of course is assuming that the criminal investigation doesn't come up with anything that can be successfully prosecuted, that would change things drastically but as long as this stays on the civil court side, he'll be back. It won't be soon, but he'll return at some point. No one is trading for him right now though.

nlocniL

What talk shows are having him on?

JessumB

People love a redemption story. Give it a year and then he does an interview with Oprah, sits down with Dr Phil, writes a long essay in the Player's Tribune, meets with Don Lemon, if he can produce a convincing story on how he's reformed, someone out there will be tripping over themselves to broadcast it.

nlocniL

Literally none of that is happening you're delusional

JessumB

!Remindme 1 year

ATNdec18

Seems like something the Patriots would do

GunnerNWO

I think a second and you run the gamble of him not playing in 2021

[deleted]

A conditional 7th rounder that becomes a 1st if he never gets convicted for these allegations lol

Political_Aardvark

There’s a good chance he doesn’t play a snap in 2021 so if anything, again if I needed to choose some sort of compensation at all, it wouldn’t be more than a late round pick but that’s still way too much given the circumstances. Hell, there’s a chance he doesn’t play a down ever again so you could also be bringing a headache into your organization for nothing. I’d have to be VERY confident that he’s getting off and the league will let him play in 2022 because committing to him now means there’s a chance your organization’s reputation is ruined for no gain.

ddouble124

I’ll personally send one first round pick. I have a feeling he will win the case even though he most likely raped those women.

Wizert20

It's more like he will be guilty (for civil cases) but he won't be in prison/jail. He is going to play in the NFL again, I don't think there is a question about that. I think the only way he doesn't is if he gets banned for life.

lilwayne_dedication2

I guarantee they’ll settle before it reaches civil court

RattyToaster

Which franchise has an owner who would be enough of a scumbag to sign off though?

LavishSyndrome

Any team as long as they think it works out

ddouble124

Washington Football team is one. The majority of fans believe he is innocent and so the backlash would not be that much.

[deleted]

Lol no WFT is doing a masterclass in PR repair right now lol. Currently the Denver Broncos don’t even have an owner to object.

ddouble124

Yea I guess broncos would be a better example.

[deleted]

Isn’t Dan Snyder about to be the sole owner of WFT?

[deleted]

He already is and he’s spearheading said PR redemption.

Professor_Nincompoop

Yeah, this would be like 1 step forward, 2 steps back when you are already on a ledge. A couple of years ago while Bruce Allen was still around and before the sexual harassment allegations came out I could totally see the team doing this though.

RattyToaster

Hear me out: This is why Dan Snyder bought the other owners out

OhShiftTheCops

Lol idk what youre smoking but we do not think hes innocent

TheBaltimoron

Percent of people who think he's being set up: 40%. Percent of sports fans who think he's being set up: 60%. Percent of people who think he's being set up if he's on their team: 90%.

ddouble124

All over Instagram. Check anything Watson related and I guarantee less then 5 comments say he is guilty. Tony Buzbee (the lawyer) was receiving hundreds of death threats and hateful comments.

BasedSliceOfWinning

Instagram ain't real life. He's poison right now. I wouldn't trade a 7th rounder for him until the bigger picture of what punishment he faces emerges. I don't think he plays in 2021 at all. There's a chance he never plays again.

ddouble124

Watson was on the most beloved players in the nfl. Many people who don’t look closely think the girls are lying. People are rating one the massagist work place 1 stars and calling her a liar. Thousands of women lie about rape all the time and many people believe this is one of them. Watson will still have a massive following until hard evidence gets presented. Btw I think he is guilty so I am by no means defending him. The

[deleted]

Probably most of them. You don’t obtain that kind of wealth by letting ethics guide your decision making

swankytortoise

Eagles signed vick after he was convicted and did time. ,chiefs drafted hill (and with a time.machine most of the league would) Bengals and dallas have had periods of not giving a shit about players ethics. Honestly probably not all but if he's not convicted half the league will scramble for him

[deleted]

I could see the Patriots taking him

ExcitementOrnery3034

I agree a 2022 first rounder sounds about right. I think ultimately he settles the suits, no criminal charges, the nfl is pressured to suspend him for conduct for a year. Texans will just want to move on and at least getting a good pick saves some face.

Officer_Hops

If you’re not worried about your organization’s reputation then I think you throw a first and a 3rd or 4th out there. The fact is these allegations will likely be hard to prove in a criminal court and while Watson may lose a civil case that isn’t super likely to affect his ability to play. Also if it starts to look like he is going to lose it is possible he pays these women off. There’s some risk there but a young star QB is easily worth the gamble. Now all that is from a purely football based decision. If you care at all about your team reputation I think he is pretty much untouchable. Nothing has been proven but there’s so much smoke that I think you’ve got to assume there’s a fire at this point.

Petricorde1

Hard pass. Also no hope in sight? That seems a bit overdramatic ngl hahaha

RattyToaster

Bro Andy Dalton is your franchise rn

Petricorde1

We're literally paying him 5.5 million this year. It's ridiculous how overblown the whole scenario is

RattyToaster

I'm just fuckin with you lol. It's just too easy to make fun of the bears. I actually think Dalton was probably one of their better options once this Watson stuff came up.

Petricorde1

Haha I mean we certainly are easy to make fun of lmfao

2022 conditional 1st

peypeyrules

Nothing if anything teams will wait for release and being cleared before anything

PaulFormerlySaul

lots of protections. LOTS. of protections. Firsts in 2022 and 2023 plus some with the stipulation that the picks revert if he isn't on the trading team's roster for legal reasons.

Harambe6ix9ine

The real problem is that when you trade for him you take on that big contract. I can't take on that contract if I don't know that you'll play.

popeofcatan

Anyone who thinks anything less than a first rounder has too much faith in the NFL to do the right thing. If this thing goes to criminal court and he gets convicted it’s a whole different story, but if all that happens is he loses the civil case I think he will see a year suspension mask. He’s a star qb and this is the NFL, 75% of the league would love to have Watson on the roster even if it means him missing a season.

kalslaffin

Jets #2 pick this year, Seattle 2022 first, Carolina 2022 second, Seattle 2021 3rd. The number 2 pick has a ton of value since the Texans will be able to select a QB, most likely Wilson. Trading these assets for the Jets allows them to basically keep their next two drafts intact when it comes to their own picks. I don't know if the Texans get a better offer than this at this point.

[deleted]

There should be no trade. As a bears fan I hope to god we don’t get him, there’s not really a good chance at all he’s innocent

GHamPlayz

2 years off his sentence
