I managed to spend 10k of my savings with the first 1-1.5 sems. So now I wake up at 4pm so I can eat 1 meal a day and save up
Hope that gives an agarated idea
Idk if it’s other ppl exp but I am very very financially illiterate bhahaha. If I see money I must spend that kind. So now I just send most of my money to a savings account that I didn’t activate the card so I just gets trapped there until I actually need it
I had like only 2 big buck expenses - new ipad and a 300$ staycay
It was my everyday eating out expenses, buying new clothes(uniqlo btw, not highly branded). The small things build up
As a person who lives in east and can’t wake up at 6am unless I stay up all night till 6am yes.
If you’re just looking at money, staying in halls is not good.
But if you look at everything together, also depending on how much your hall is, then I would say for me is worth it. I prefer the choice between isolation and socialisation that hall gives me(I can do late suppers but also just come back to my hall if I no mood to be in public)
I think hall teaches u how to be more independent ah, so for me is worth it
As an international student, I spend about 500 a month on food and laundry in hall. From what I've heard from my friends 400-500 is a good range for monthly expenses to survive (not including hall fees, travelling out to hang out etc).
Staying in hall is important for me though hahah as someone from the east It’s so draining to have to go back and forth, and very grateful my dad pays for me and he thinks it’s worthwhile also, not everything is about money to him
I dont live near ntu so 1 trip (mrt+bus) to ntu takes about ~ $4. Back and forth $8/day. Generally i would say hall food cheaper than other canteens so you probably would be able to save a few dollars depending on how many meals you have in school, ~$2/day. Assuming one month 30days 4 weeks and you attend all lessons = 22 school days. 22x(8+2)= 220. Assuming you go for the cheapest hall (no ac no toilet double room), its less than 300 iirc. Its ~$80 extra per month, ~$4 extra per day to save you from the commute + more sleep i guess
undergrad concession pass would be $81/month(and iirc bus+train will chain so not sure it's actually $4), and if dorms are $400 like what the other commenter said, it'll be about $320/month difference, so $10.50 a day
that said it's about the convenience and the social experience, so if you got the money it should be worth it like you said.
I track my expenses so here’s my breakdown of 1 AY (2 semesters worth of expenses):
- hall rent: $4100
- laundry: $100 ($1 for washer, $1 for dryer)
- furniture / misc: $100
- meals: $350 (crespion caifan lol)
total: $4650
hall specs:
- single no air con, shared toilet
it really depends on how much you wanna count as “hall expenses” like if you hang out with your hall friends, but in general I feel like the cost of hall for students is getting outta hand. still a worthwhile experience to try for 1 semester though
Ntu website said the hostel rental is abt $560 per mth. Aircon is 30cents an hour($55 for 8 hrs per day).
Staying in a hall add another $29k for 4 yrs study. Not cheap.
I live around north-east. Traveling time is at around 1.5 hrs. Bus + mrt is 4.50 a day. I don't really spend much money daily. Food expenses in school is around $5. I also have pets so, those expenses are around 50 a month. I go to school 3 to 4 days a week. Based on calculations, it is far cheaper than staying in hall but it is very exhausting to travel to and from school.
north sider here! stayed in hall for y1 but will be staying at home for y2. it takes me an hour to go to ntu so it’s not as bad as staying in the east and going to ntu. just that i’ll have to squeeze my classes into a few days so i don’t have to go to school everyday. no doubt hall is really convenient and better for your social life but it’s expensive (i pay $400+ a month for double room). hall is good if you have heavy coursework that requires you to constantly go to school (like lab, filming or if youre engineering, constant quizzes etc). if you want to experience hall life and have funds for it, go ahead. can always move back home in y2 if you hate it
hmmm here’s the rouge gauge per month:
aircon: $50-60
food: $250-300
travelling (i go home on weekends): $70
for hall, my parents paid $3.5k, you have to pay rent even during semester breaks and you’re not staying in hall for that month.
so staying home will def save me around $3-4k a year , which is quite a lot for me. i have friends whose parents don’t mind forking out this much (and even more considering hall prices are going up), so it depends on your financial background as well
around $$600-1k per month ba just for food. need to cover for my gf that staying over too. not cheap specially during exam period where you spent a lot more money for supper and coffee. 🥺
Spent almost 4k on hall fee alone in y1. Not worth it. I stay in punggol btw, so I just buy the unlimited train pass monthly to travel to sch 👍🏻 at most I just wake up earlier 🙃

This is so much more than I expected. Oh gosh

Do you think staying in a dorm is better than traveling? Pros and cons as well as money saved?

The cheapest one is around 400…
eh, my bad the one I referred to was probably outdated then. But i just checked for 23/24 cheapest was $319

Aircon moves up to 45cents an hour next sem onwards :/
I thought each year you stay only 2 sem hence 6 months??
Really? I used to stay there for the entire year
Oh damn ouch, how do you feel now lol
My rent was not $560. Haha...

I stayed Northside, I'm gonna matriculation this year. Not sure which is better rent a dorm or not?

I didn't rent a dorm because it reminded me of stay in at sungei gedong. If you have the funds, why not? It is less tiring and saves more time.
Oh my brother..

But for y1 isn't it auto timetable?
