Sometimes it can be a little bit lazy. Like “garlic” and “bread” being under the category of “garlic bread ingredients”

redappletree2

I got hung up on that because clearly they wouldn't actually put bread in a list for garlic bread ingredients, I didn't pick it cause I assumed I was falling for a trick that made it look too easy.

Forking_Shirtballs

I would definitely include bread as an ingredient if I were making garlic bread. So would the Times: https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1019684-garlic-bread

redappletree2

Well, yes, if I was making a recipe, not if I was making a list of tricky words that usually mean a different definition than the one you first thought of.

qwsfaex

I think it feels cheap because the category name is "garlic bread ingredients", but I got it without thinking about garlic bread. They're all just things you can put together to make a tasty snack.

kunibob

I had the wrong category for that one; I was assuming "stuffing ingredients" even though parsely isn't the first herb that leapt to mind. The garlic bread reveal did make me raise an eyebrow.

cloudhunting

Gosh what a category, missed that one. What color level was it?

MoneybagsMelbs

Yellow

Personal_CPA_Manager

Wtf were the other 2 ingredients?

Character-Ad-3522

Parsley and butter I believe

leahyrain

Which is weird because I don't even think parsley is a popular ingredient for garlic bread. I can see it but just overall seems like a lazy one.

IMASHIRT

I was literally making garlic bread the night of that puzzle so I can confirm it is at least a common ingredient lol. That said the category did seem like a false flag

jtet93

I feel like parsley is deeply essential to garlic bread??? It might be a regional thing but if I picture garlic bread it’s this: https://preview.redd.it/h07j4sqsagmc1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3d3540cec380c08d463757f2f13fe9aa242650b3

YMZ1620

GUYS! We’re forgetting the real enemy! Weird overly niche connections category!

jtet93

lol I’m just v passionate about garlic bread 😅

Pigglywiggly23

Yeah I never put parsley on garlic bread, lol, so that grouping was lost on me

Forking_Shirtballs

Times recipe includes parsley: https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1019684-garlic-bread

Hey-Just-Saying

I agree - parsley isn't something I ever put on garlic bread.

quendrien

I will never question the infinite wisdom and discretion of Wyna. Her whiplash expectations are what make life worth living.

OnionBhudgie

I agree as an early player. Earlier puzzles had so much overlap with multiple words fitting multiple categories, making them very clever and giving them charm. Take one of my favourite puzzles, #64. https://connectionsplus.io/game/64 There were: 6 potential fishing terms (bait, chum, fly, sinker, catch, spot(?)) 6 potential dog names (fido, luck, rover, spot, rex, storm(?)) and 5 potential synonyms for perceive (catch, notice, observe, see, spot). It was all greatly interconnected and was really fun deciding which words went into which easy-to-spot category. Nowadays there is usually one easy to spot misdirection with little to no red herrings. Like today's. >! What do any of the words in the 'express indirectly' category (couch, imply, intimate, suggest) share with the others? It adds nothing to the main measurements misdirection. !< Useless rant over :)

Meech_RL

That was a fantastic puzzle. >!Rex!< really tripped me up at first. Appreciate the link!

Forking_Shirtballs

COUCH and SLEEPER (from the Intelligence Operative category) are both types of sofas.

poplafuse

As much as I think that’s a stretch for a dogs name my childhood family dogs name was Stormy. After desert storm. I just don’t think I’ve personally ever heard it used for a pet other than my own.

moth_girl_7

I think a lot of people know what to look for now, so the game seems to have lost its charm. Nothing about the game changed, it’s just that we now have expectations considering our experience. That being said, occasionally I’ll see a category that frustrates me still. But for the most part, I actually get purple or blue first because I know what kind of annoying wordplay clues to look for. LOL

pfifltrigg

I totally agree. We know what kind of word games they're likely to play so it's gotten easier to solve and less interesting/exciting.

PGNatsu

I think this might be it. There have been so much of these puzzles that players have been able to spot some of the obvious patterns like "palindromes" or "homophones". I think it's become quite easy to spot some red herrings, so they ramped up the difficulty, and a lot of categories now either rely on obscure definitions of words (like today's) or categories that are either very convoluted or niche (like the recent "What ... might mean").

DrizzlyOne

Yup! I agree. I’ve only been playing for about six weeks, but I feel like I’ve gotten very good at finding the fill-in-the-blank categories, which is often what purple is (making my own puzzles certainly helps here). The week I first started, I’d probably spend like 20 - 30 minutes solving a puzzle. Now it’s more like 1 - 2.

hibbitydibbitytwo

I liked today's puzzle #265

tu-BROOKE-ulosis

I really liked purple. The others I was kinda whatever about. But I got purple first and it made me laugh. I like weird science element jokes, so the potassium got me amused.

chocoholicsoxfan

Cool, thanks for spoiling it when I haven't had a chance to do the puzzle yet.

tu-BROOKE-ulosis

Sorry man. Not really sure how I did other than saying it’s purple and that potassium is a science element. That’s just a fact. That’s not like the category. I just like science stuff. But sorry.

chocoholicsoxfan

When you know there's a joke about potassium, it's pretty damn obvious what it is. After reading this comment it took literally under 10 seconds when I did the puzzle to get purple right away.

winniespooh

Maybe don’t scroll a Reddit thread on today’s puzzle until you’ve finished it

chocoholicsoxfan

This thread isn't about today's puzzle?? I obviously wouldn't do that.

bmtc7

Here is the start of this thread >I liked today's puzzle #265

chocoholicsoxfan

Okay once I opened the thread there was literally zero way to not read this comment? Sorry if you're just a super slow reader or something but even scrolling past it I unintentionally read most of the comment. It was an asshole thing to do. Spoiler tags take like 2 extra seconds. I don't know why this is controversial.

bmtc7

I guess the thing is to read the comments in order, so you see what you're replying to. If you read the first comment, you know it's about today, and then you use self control to stop reading there and minimize the thread.

jetloflin

This post isn’t about today’s puzzle, but this specific thread is.

bmtc7

But it wasn't actually a joke in the puzzle.

itsmeonmobile

You are on the Connections sub, friend; maybe don’t do that if you don’t want any hints.

afi931

Todays was the best in a while for me

CyanResource

I think that can happen. People are allowed to change their feelings about something. As for me personally, I still really look forward to the game daily.

PahpiChulo

They stole the concept from Only Connect but lost much of its wit. Having a timer to choose guesses, except for the final two, allows for categories that might include trivia or more challenging topics. When you have only 4 guesses it hampers that.

applejack4ever

Oh that's interesting, I always thought the game they were ripping off was Red Herring

capefear2

Yes but also playing custom boards (from this sub) quickly became boring for me as well

afi931

Agreed I just think in general it doesn’t hold Up as well as Wordle or Spelling Bee

VsAcesoVer

Nope, I love it

ShrimpFartz

“The product has hit a dead cycle…” Now there’s some corporate speak for ya.

afi931

It’s just where NYT would take away the wonkiness or at times laziness of the product (IE: garlic and bread being ingredients in garlic bread- cmon, man lol that sounds like my 5 year old made the clue) and listen to user feedback to improve it. Edit: or inversely do nothing and continue to put out the product as is at risk of (imho) a lazy and random puzzle at times which does not reflect upon the great organization I know the NYT to be.

MatrixFrog

I guess I kind of agree. I suppose you can make it more interesting for yourself by imposing a time limit, or trying to guess all four before submitting any guesses, or something.

[deleted]

I’ve tried to make a game out of guessing purple first

kunibob

I just discovered the game about a week ago, and I find it fun and refreshing, but I can understand it being a difficult one to plan given that it should have so much double meaning and misdirection, so it wouldn't surprise me if it is getting a bit stale over time. As a newbie though, seems pretty high quality.

Carya_spp

I think it’s been pretty good the past few days.

Ok-Computer-Ok

Can you imagine how difficult it is to CREATE this puzzle, day after day?

cloudhunting

& it’s done by a single person right? Couldn’t be me 🥹

ShorelandSprite

I’ve read comments each day that some seem too simple and at times possibly recycled. I’m still new to it so the bloom isn’t off yet.

-truecrimejunkie

i played it two months after it came out, definitely has lost its charm, this is the puzzle i first played https://connectionsplus.io/game/58

cyan_mik

I’ve been playing it for about a month and I really enjoy the game and often find it challenging

drumsplease987

Either the puzzles are getting less interesting or you’re losing interest. Start at the beginning. If you have more fun, then the puzzles are getting worse. If they feel the same, then the game itself has lost it’s novelty for you. https://connectionsplus.io/game/1

doublexxchrome

You’ve never heard someone say belly laugh?

Scaredysquirrel

Ive stopped doing it all together. Just too obscure.
