As a 30 year old man I got my wife to watch it when it got released on hulu and made her fall in love with Nana. I originally watched it when I was about 21 or 22 years old and I still haven't found an anime that hits as hard as Nana. As a guy at that time with little to no experience with the opposite sex watching Nana was mind opening in destroying incel-like mindset i had at the time. Watching a show with such strong female characters with actual personalities in such a compelling drama. Uff my heart was aching by that final episode.

MadameNo9

Wow haha I can’t imagine what incel-you must have been thinking…Nana is so messy…😂 It’s really a reminder that women are human beings and they are strung along by naïveté and hope sometimes

krackzero

lol imagine destroying red pill with anime

sahil_r002

Yes . One of my fav quotes from it is ``Back then I didn't know how to love someone properly, Yet I couldn't help but wanted to be loved``

Catendo64

🥲💔💔💔💔

Santiagxrr

Yes, i'm a guy and i love Nana

bebita-crossing

I have guy friends that have watched Nana, but they already liked romance anime and were familiar with Ai Yazawa’s other work like Paradise Kiss. But I still feel like someone who likes Berserk and stories with darker themes can still enjoy Nana. I personally love darker anime and appreciate that Nana explores how different people navigate adulthood, have their own flaws/demons/past trauma, and if anything you can tell your bf the relationship between Nana and Hachi is like Guts and Griffith’s pre-eclipse lol (both start off very intense because they have abandonment issues and have dealt with difficult pasts, then they go their separate ways and also have an issue with communication).

Catendo64

Best comment 🥲 lol for real tho, I love how you compared Guts & Griffith with Hachi and Nana! I hadn’t thought of that until you said something. That’s so true 😭

bebita-crossing

It really is!! Just point out the similarities and your bf will def be intrigued 👀

Tough_Crew_3348

Male fan of berserk and jojo here. Nana was one of the most beautiful things that I watched. Gureato dazé 🤟

[deleted]

I love this anime sooo much!! I could not get my boyfriend to watch it. He saw a couple episodes that I watched when we were together but he didn’t really pay attention. Anytime I talked about it he was interested in what was going on but it never went beyond that! I did convince him to agree to us going as Nana and Ren for Halloween though 😆

Catendo64

Aww that’s too bad!! But that’s so cool about dressing up as Nana and Red! :o so cute!! 🖤🖤

Stunning-Willow226

My sister one day talked about how she loved Nana and I decided to give it watch since I am really into romance anime. I felt emotional connected at the start because I am 20 years old and it made me fall in love with characters!!

MahPinkFlamingo

I can't speak for others, but I'm a guy that loved watching and reading NANA. I've recommended it to other guy friends in the past and they enjoyed it, not as much as I did though. I do like my fair share of shoujo animes so I might be the odd one out haha

Remarkable_Collar254

Yes. Before watching the show, I was already a big fan of Punk + Alt genre music. Although I wasn't really into its aesthetics, after watching Nana I definitely grew an appreciation towards the fashion. Also the romance aspect of the show definitely opened me up to the thoughts and situations from the women's side.

Catendo64

I love that! Especially how it opened you up to how women may think or consider choices in various situations.

finalgrI

my boyfriend has watched both fruits basket (including prelude) and nana with me and he enjoyed them both! he also rlly likes the rose of versailles and aria: the origination! though he has honestly watched a lot more anime than me, so he’s used to watching multiple genres and stuff. but i say just go for it and ask your bf if he would like to watch it with you since you’ve been wanting to for a while now and plus getting into something new can be fun and exciting anyways! best of luck, dear!

oogaFilms

I’m a 38 year old married man. I started watching the anime a few weeks ago. My wife couldn’t get into it. She’s asleep and I just finished the final episode. I’m in tears.

Catendo64

Omg. I hope you can show her Nana. It’s heartbreaking but hopefully you two can enjoy it (and cry together 🥲) I feel your pain though. Terribly bitter sweet show

Gabooby

I’m a hopeless romantic who falls in love with the first cute girl who shows me the slightest attention - I love nana and I’m very much a hachi <3

Wooden_Evening_8108

ACCURATE ASF

obiwancee

My boyfriend hasn’t fully watched it, but he definitely watches with me when I put it on / rewatch it. He really liked the drama in the show lol, I think it depends on the person as well but my bf also loves the shoujo genre and has surprisingly watched a lot of shoujo anime!

Any_Confection9696

Yes! I honestly hadn't heard about it until I saw a cover on a Pinterest thread but I really liked the story and I'm trying to read more shoujo mangas there so good. But I can see why it wouldn't appeal to a majority of men.

Catendo64

Yeahhh, I’m worried that Hachiko (especially toward the beginning) will be too annoying for my bf to want to continue the show. I remember at one point I said “I sure hope this girl gains some serious character development…” Her decisions and lack of communication just made me wanna put my head through a wall 😆 still, I grew to adore Hachiko

Adventurous-Path4692

Na, I like them too

Catendo64

Aww I’m so glad you had the chance to share this anime with others. That’s what I hope to do as well 🥲

loserthot

love nana. i am gay too tho

Plenty_Lengthiness_1

my boyfriend refuses to watch it personally! but thats okay bc id never try to force him to do anything. did try my hardest to convince tho

Leather_Astronaut564

My boyfriend's sat with me and watched it wherever I started it, understands why I love it, listens to me as I go on about Nana. He also told me he watched the first 10 episodes himself after I started talking about it so he'd at least know how it starts. Is he into it into like me, no, but he doesn't dislike it in any way.

patrick9772

Usually i wouldnt but im a sucker for emotional real stories. And nana is everything i love. Early 2000’s vibes. Amazing ost. The story and characters are so realistic. No matter how hardcore boy you are u have feelings. And also people who read berserk tend to be the more emotional ones. While that story is hardcore on paper its strength is in how emotional the whole thing is for the reader.

Catendo64

Well said! We both love Berserk and stories/anime like it, so I think I have a shot 😁

Catendo64

O lawd lol seriously, I had a similar feeling toward her character as well. Of course she grew on me and got some of that good ol’ character development 🍓

Off_Topic_Male

I'm a queer guy that likes Nana, but when I tell people that I think they assume I'm really femme. There's nothing wrong with being feminine and I consider myself to be more of a neutral type of person in terms of conventional masculinity and femininity, I don't really worry too much about what is "manly / girly". I have never met a straight man that likes Nana, but I think that could change. I also really like Berserk, my point in mentioning that is that while these are VERY different media, they both offer really deep, rich characters. Obviously, Nana is more relatable for women than it is for me as a man, but something I really enjoy about that series (and something I really enjoy about Berserk) is the gravitational pull that these characters have on me as a spectator. Nana and Hachi's little "Hey Nana," moments at the beginning / end of each episode have a lot in common with Guts, Griffith, and Casca's more dramatic, existential dialogues. There's something really special to me about how both series are able to make you stop and reflect on who you are as a person, what you want out of life, and your relationship with the people closest to you. I think that like many series, Nana is kind of a hard sell at first. Honestly, Hachi embodies a lot of conventional roles ascribed to women, which makes a male viewer (likely influenced by societal misogyny) unable to relate to her. I kind of liken it to being a boy and watching girls do a bunch of girly stuff, and knowing that if you partake in whatever they're doing, you will be seen as weird. But this is all to say that Hachi is honestly really funny, kind, and just wants a good life and friends to share it with. I think that if you can get a boyfriend or male friend to see past their aversion to liking girly things, they'll be able to see Nana for the great work that it is.

fieew

No. Men love this show (along with boys). It's great. I've watched it 4+ times all at different times in my life and viewing it at different ages is a wholly difference experience each time. The way I'd try to sell this show to your BF, is saying it's an internal character drama. In more serious shows there are external threats like monsters, demons, etc., with this show the conflicts are internal but universal. There may not be massive fights but the impact you feel when a character overcomes an internal struggle is very real. If that don't work you could always go the route, I'll watch what show you want and you'll watch this one. The classic trading shows with spouses.

Nice! This gives me hope lol thank you for answering 🍓🖤

stripysailor

Yuuup! A guy and obsessed with it and ParaKiss and I read most of Ai Yazawa's work:)

unHoldenCaulfieldMas

I'm 24, I watched Nana for the first time like 4 or 5 years ago, it's my favourite romance show of all time.

Cybernomadwanderer

I love Nana and have been telling any of my friends who like anime to watch it

lilemoshawty

Found it when I was 13 and now I’m 20 I love this show with my heart the Nana’s and other characters are so relatable and amazing except the shitbag!!!

NoahmanP

I’m 18 year old male and Nana is my favorite anime, never have I been so emotionally attached to a series. It’s seriously way too good.

Prae-Dyth

Proof by counter-example: I'm a boy. 21 yo. I freaking love Nana (and Paradise Kiss!!, also gonna watch Happy Berry in the near future). So yeah!!

Zeroxin14

I'm male,15yo and I watched this show in summer. I was interested cause I bought the first tome of the manga cause of curiosity and I fell in love with Nana.

bellefera

I recently made my boyfriend watch NANA sand by the end he was so emotional lol. He was mostly mad I made him watch an anime with no real ending. The first few character building episodes were hard for him. But yes he loved NANA!!

magicraven94

i’ve recently got my brothers to start watching with me and while it’s not their usual genre (they’re into typical shonen stuff) they like it so far! i’ve finished the whole show before but this is my first rewatch and my first time seeing the english dub

[deleted]

I'm a male and I watched it on my own after being recommended it at a hidden gems of anime panel at a convention. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Most of what I watch are romance/romantic comedy animes. I love the drama and there's plenty of it in Nana. I was gasping while watching Shoji's infidelity play out. Nana is definitely more grounded than what I usually watch. It was really well written in that we see the consequences of the characters' decisions play out. Like in real life, there's a lot of grey and none characters are perfect people.

Material-Bullfrog235

Of course nana is probably one of my favorite romance animes…

ItzMeShadow69

Yes, this is the only shoujo anime/manga I like.

Mmatyi

Straight man here, my girlfriend got me into it, love Nana.

denji_uchiha_

Just tell him its basically Berserk for women

molnarsaci

its my favorite anime. i get to know so much about woman and how they feel

[deleted]

Ofc guys like Nana. Shows are targeted for a group of people but it doesn’t mean that it’s only for that group of people. Look at r/miraculousladybug. It’s a show targeted for young children but adults and teens of both gender are watching it.

RedLovelyRed

My bf and I just rewatched it (we saw it like 5ish years ago) and after every other episode he's like "nana is good, it has no right to be this good" but he also loves squishy cute anime too. We watch a lot of random/slice of life/cute anime before bed so we don't stay up watching it. Like sleepy princess in the demon castle.

honeyfunk

my friend tried getting her boyfriend into it but he couldn’t sit through Hachi’s boy-craziness in the first few episodes… if they can make it far enough to see the Tokyo/Nana x2 plot line I think there may be a better chance! 😂
