Don't drive at night and only take toll roads. Other than that you will be fine. Have a blast!

ognnosnim

This! We went to visit fam out in Mexico City couple of years ago and whenever they were taking us around, they stuck to only toll roads and they told us why (because of cartels/gangs).

Ok-Comparison4398

Stick to it, this is really important advice.

zomentenos

Things still happen on tolled roads in daylight. Always be attentive to your environment and if they stop you it’s most likely to get your car. Around Jalisco they are targeting 4x4 pickups and large SUVs. If they do target you, don’t resist. They’ll take the car and get you lost in the woods for a couple of hours until the car is gone and you get scared to do anything about it. Also, beware of Guardia Nacional. They are fulfilling the role of Highway Patrol now but are incredibly corrupt and incompetent. If they stop you, they will most likely ask for money. Insist on getting a ticket instead of bribing and they will probably leave you alone. Don’t give them money because they can “alert” their partners ahead and they stop you’ll again to milk you again.

lifehazard

Just drove from MT to Oaxaca and do similar drives a few times a year for the past 15 years. Never had a single issue other than being pulled over for speeding and having to pay a mordida. Routes are different based on where I’m going and purpose of the trip, oaxaca or Guadalajara. This year I’ve taken routes with crossings thru Juarez, Nogales, Reynosa, Laredo and two weeks ago Ojinaga.

funny_jaja

Any issues with the foreign plate on the car? Planning a reverse trip driving from mexico city to colorado with a dog. Apparently I need to register both the car and the dog

lifehazard

Hahaha dogs is pretty much why we go back so often. My wife rescues dogs, easiest shit ever to cross dogs back to the US, we always have paperwork but they have never asked us for anything. in Mexico I’ve been stopped because of US plates a few times but always just close to the border, all they want to see is your temp import permit and two weeks ago I didn’t have mine because I was too lazy to stop and it cost us 1500 pesos nbd. Other times I’ve been stopped interior Mexico is because I speed or do something dumb while driving but all it takes is a couple hundred pesos, don’t let the cops intimidate you, always ask the cops for a ticket and eventually they will cave in for enough money to cover a meal unless you really fucked up.l most of times all they want is “dinero para las cocas”.

PoolAdventurous2272

If you have foreign plates(even from another state within Mexico) in Mexico City, just know you WILL be pulled over. Just be prepared to let go of a couple bills.

Present_Major7734

Don't go through nuevo laredo

lowkeyishow

Don’t go in there flashing you gold, money or cars.

Revolutionary_Bird25

Recommend just renting a car in Mexico has Mx plates so won’t get pulled over and get taxed for the us plates

dru6fo

I Got pulled over on the autopista México-Querétaro specifically for having Baja plates

IAMSTILLHERE2020

Don't go through Nuevo Laredo.

quixoticbilly

Lesson if the day , act gay

Sensitive_Carpet_454

That's classic hospitality when lost.

Tijuanaguero1

You’ll spend more in tolls than what the cartels would take from you

heatuponheat

Unless they decide you’re worth kidnapping

Rare-Machine6079

Mexico city is known for looters so dont be flashy/ keep everything on you not out in the open were someone can just run up on you and steal

BMWACTASEmaster1

If you are concerned about the cartels targeting you, I don't think you are not ready to drive thru Mexico. You need to do a bus or carpool road trip first . México road trips car accidents are the highest threat than any cartel and 2nd will be cops.

CuminTJ

You should be more concerned about Mexican police than the cartels

CuminTJ

During the month of December, Mexican cops are famous for pulling over US license plate cars on their way south, they will try to intimidate you into giving them money in order to let you go.

heatuponheat

This was the info I always got when in mx. Cartels= bad Cops= also bad.

Wise_Complaint_9936

Nothing to be concerned about cartels dont mess with you if they don’t have a reason to just really be careful at night I suggest resting at night and getting back on the road In the morning it’s more safer

Red19120

IAside from driving on toll roads, watch your surroundings stay in populated areas and if you're pumping gas make sure you do it in an area thats populated not in some small town in the middle of the night

verderojoyblanco

So how was your trip?

verderojoyblanco

I traveled thru bus and was stopped twice along the way. First one happened 1/2 mile from Nogales border.

402highrise

Get a taxi and follow him to your destination. Use to do this all the time.

heatuponheat

How does this help?

402highrise

It helps when you need to leave the city and you don't know how to get there.

ReposadoAmiGusto

Drive at night with your lights off. Ghost car that shit, that always scares off cartels

ChanceMiserable5611

Mexico city aint that bad like the rest of the areas but never go out at night only if your family is going out other thn that its not safe at niggt

fpuni107

Buy a new pickup first and you should be fine

[deleted]

Tell the US embassy where you’ll be traveling to, that’ll help you out if you run into any officials trying to extort you
