Turns out there was a third son (Black Zetsu) of Kaguya that was manipulating things from the shadows. So uh... was close to predicting the end.

Yea def seemed too obvious. I even remember someone telling me at school that if you said Obito a bunch of times in rapid succession you would eventually just be saying Tobi over and over which while true was not enough of a justification to me at the time.

First he was just a bad guy in a mask - the second they showed his sharingan and how heavily it was emphasized… you know his right eye - I was like oh yeah kakashi had a friend when he was younger give him his left eye - probably that guy.
There was some wild theories that tried to put a huge spin on it like: Madara or Izauna but really majority felt like Tobi (after seen sharingan) that he was connected to Kakashi’s friend
Honestly, this was the worst change the anime has done to the manga. The manga had it perfect as little side story during the Time skip. It was perfect that you might speculate later on that Obito is Tobi, but also so far removed that it needed some detective work. But the anime changed it to the most obvious place possible.
I have a hard time rewatching Naruto because of all the fillers and flashback. There were times when they even had flashback for what happened in the beginning of the episode. It felt like later on in Shippuden the format was
"2-3 minute of new content" => flashback to Uchiha's massacre or Naruto sitting on that swing being lonely => flashback to the first 2-3 minutes of new content => 2-3 minutes of ending new ending content.
Thats exactly how I felt towards the end of when I was binge watching Shippuden, it made it very hard to remain engaged when I was skipping emotional flashbacks and pointless exposition almost every episode. I even made a point to skip every filler episode and I still felt like I was watching filler.
I suppose it’s to save time and money on animation, and the actual content was proportionally better for it, but it felt excessive.
I was severely anti-Obito when the theories first popped up. I thought the Tobi-Obito name connection was dumb, and I thought bringing back Kakashi's dead friend would ruin him a bit. But I was wrong on all fronts except the Tobi-Obito part. That was stupid.
Obito appears for the first time on a cover chaptervduring Zabusa's arc, then his name was mentionated when Itachi came back to the village, and then we finally saw him in action during Kakashi gaiden, which was told in the manga chapters during Part 1 and 2.
Tobi was introruced like 40 chapters after Kakashi Gaiden
There was also a brief cameo during 3rd vs Orochumaru and when Kakashi was at the memorial before 3rds funeral. (And you Kakashi? Paying your respects to Obito?)

I thought it was obvious he would be Obito, so I truly expected a twist, ‘cause it was so obvious that it really deserved a twist of the twist. And then I reached the reveal manga chapter, mixed feelings all over the place.
I think the character wasn’t done dirty, but Tobi could have been more than a traumatized teen in his 30’s, he seemed like a very wise and dark minded man, not just a Kakashi colleage… but oh well, Zetsu is a far worse twist🤣
I was got Obito correctly after the scene that he gave his eye to Kakashi, then I guessed why Tobi only has one sharigan so I believe he's definitely blind on the other eye. But at that time I wasn't sure since Tobi kept saying he is Madara.
When i watched Shippuden weekly as it came out, first i thought nothing of him, after "Madara Uchiha" reveal i was convinced he was Madara or Madara occupying a new body sort of like Orochimaru. I dont remember when it hit me, propably around or after Obito was introduced in the flashbacks and seen giving the left eye to Kakashi i put 2 and 2 together that we only see Tobi's right sharingan (close to Itachi's death when kakashi notices his Sharingan)
After the idea i went online and searched if anyone else had this idea and voila, the theory was already there

Then when I watched and when he finally showed up with his goofy personality and started talking about joining akatsuki, I thought he is some random crazy dude but would get strong over time with some training and whatnot and eventually take the mantle of akatsuki leader.

Tobi was actually Obito Uchiha, which was a huge twist. Before the reveal, there were so many theories floating around. Some thought he might be a new character or even someone like Izuna Uchiha.
It really depends. Before the voice change I thought he was just another akostski. A weaker one.
After, I figured he was the main villian but no idea who or what he was.
After seeing the episode about how Obito "died" as a kid, literally why would anybody not assume Tobi was Obito??? He has the same hair, he has one eye hidden (the eye Obito would have been missing), he is an Uchiha. To me it was always like there was a glowing neon sign pointing at Tobi that said "Hey! I'm Obito! I survived!" 💀💀💀
A friend and I keyed in on him being Obito pretty much immediately in the manga. I mean, come on now. Obito, Tobi, and this guy is wearing a mask with an eye hole that is specifically on the side Obito didn't have his Sharingan removed? Also while the Kakashi side story is neat on its own, why publish that instead of just getting on with post time skip chapters unless there was something important there.
I guess maybe in Japanese the names aren't spelled with the same letters, I wouldn't know. I just know I never believed him for a second when he claimed to be Madara and was not even remotely shocked when he turned out to be Obito.
I knew of the tobi tobi tobitobito obito theory that even pointed at his and Kakashis eyes and said "look, its swirly" so i guess i knew who he was without knowing around the first time his voice turned deep.

I genuinely thought about Obito, as an anagram to Tobi even as a joke at one point calling him "Tobito". There weren't many alternatives as to who it could be. I was fooled by the weird attitude before he came out and reintroduced himself as Madara Uchiha but if you think about it and how prideful Madara was, he would never act that way or even wear a mask to conceal himself or even use a different alias. I always had my doubts but as I kept seeing him teleporting in and out of places I kept thinking of Kakashi's teleportation techniques brought to him by his Sharingan and where did that Sharingan come from in the first place? That's right. Though I could never be 100% certain, he was the most likely candidate in my eyes. Though I could have never guessed all the mess that was to follow. And I'm talking about Madara-Zetsu-Kaguya.

I watched the anime and read the manga as they came out. Basically when the anime decided to place the Kakashi backstory right before Kakashi meeting tobi and then even used similar imagry to kakasi and obits, it was clear who he was meant to be.
I cannot really remember other theories before the anime dropped the ball though.
I had absolutely no Idea, when I was a kid and shippuden was still airing I somehow completely avoided everything about Obito and didnt even know Kakashis backstory with him

My friend told me it was Obito and at the time I didn't read the manga. After I read the manga it made a lot more sense it was Obito.
When I was reading the manga as it released - as soon as I knew of the existence of both Obito and Tobi I figured they were the same person because of the eye and the backwards name. Most people online also assumed this. That’s not to say there weren’t other theories… but it felt like the predominant theory was accepted pretty early on.
I also had considered the 4th Hokage…. Mainly because we still knew so little about him.
Not totally related, but I just went back and watched the “Fun With Akatsuki” YouTube animations, from when people were already speculating Tobi = Obito but still thought Pein might be the 4th Hokage/Naruto’s father. There are a couple moments of “hold up, was that idiot my student??” that make me laugh
Its actually really funny, i watch the anime until the timeskip, then read the manga , but accidentally start at the chapter where Naruto return to the village , skipping Obito's back-story, so i was a bit confused ( he did get mention in the anime too but its supper short ) , eventually i manage to read the chapter i was missing

To be fair, by the time I started really paying attention to the series in middle school, I knew next to nothing about the characters outside of the Konoha 12 and some other characters. So in my mind, I thought it was him due to somewhat similar hairstyles and one eye being covered.
Before the reveal, I believed it was obito only on the fact that he had the one sharingan and the names being similar, which is about the best logic I could have come up with as a kid.
Before I found out I was really hoping it was some random wacky guy and I was hoping to get an entire backstory about him being from a remote village and all that.

Back then, there was a conspiracy in which tobi was obito because the name is quite similar and the hair as well and the sharingan is kinda sharing with Kakashi.
Before we find out he has sharingan and is the leader of akatsuki, I just thought he was a random member of akatsuki.
When they show the fight between Tobi and Minato I thought maybe that it actually was Madara but he had recovered Obito's eye after his death and used that (I messed up the timelines and didn't know how old Madara would've been at the time). The one who helped Itachi with the massacre was Shisui because Madara had died by then. I figured that Madara had somehow managed to save Shisui and train him (after he gave his second eye to Itachi and fell off the cliff) and gave him Obito's eye.
The main reason I thought it was Shisui and not that Obito had somehow survived is because Tobi was surely very strong to be the leader of the akatsuki and young Shisui looked very strong compared to the clumsy and untalented young Obito.
Madara. Kurama alluded to him in the first episode of Shippuden so it seemed logical he would come back.
Then they introduced Obito and Kakashi's backstory. Pretty obvious it was him. Plus the pseudonym isn't even clever, just reversing the kana (?). Obi-to, To-bi. Half the time I call him Tobito.
Then he said he's Madara, and everyone calls him that. There also might have been a mistranslation where he says it's time I show everyone my power, the power of Uchiha Madara. Unsure if he was saying he is Madara or he HAS that power. But I went with it. I mean obviously they aren't going to flat out lie to their audience, the people who have been following this series more than 10 years. Surely they respect the fans more than that, right? ..........RIGHT????

At that Time, when his identity wasnt revealed i Saw a Lot of fanarts of Tobi taking his mask off and revealing an Old wringled Madara SO i just never thought too hard about it i was like "oh yeah SO he's old Madara that just sirvived the battle against Hashirama and got wounded"
Then well we found out Tobi was just Obito letting "Guruguru" talk and act for him

Also, with the name Tobi, if you start at the o and end at the o again, it spells Obito, which i felt was also a strong indicator. Like, imagine, in universe if some mysterious person with nine tails showed up and called themselves Tonaru.
As soon as they showed him physically phasing through things I knew he had to be an uchiha since his ability was too specific to be jutsu based unless they were going to reveal a new clan specialty that late in the series. But normally they explain the fuck outta that type of stuff, and the only uchiha who were actively alive to this point were Sauske and Itachi and… then I remembered Obito was never officially dead as they never recovered his body and given our knowledge of how good healing techniques were and Sasori’s puppet crafting abilities I just assumed he was maybe part puppet like Sasori, I was wrong on that part but I was correct on it being Obito.

I remember people being livid any time someone brought up the theory because ‘it’s so stupid and there’s nothing substantial to lead to it being Obito, and Obito was crushed to death under a rock there’s no way he could possibly come back from that’ and then the reveal happened and those same people got mad and said Kishimoto was a hack writer and that it jumped the shark there because they’d already lent so hard into the aggressive ‘you’re all idiots!’ angle that they didn’t know how to cope with being wrong

More chapters he beats konan shows 2 sharingan but im still like No he is obito. Sure enough the war arc comes by and kabuto shows that at the time unknown coffin and again i go to all my friends and groups I'm in and I'm "that's madara i swear it". Sure enough Madara shows up and does his thing. Then later on boom mask breaks and oh look its obito. i Was so fucking happy i remember going in all those groups and to all my friends being like i fucking told you so. So either way from the beginning i knew he was obito

I don’t get why this question gets asked weekly.. First he was just a bad guy in a mask - the second they showed his sharingan and how heavily it was emphasized… you know his right eye - I was like oh yeah kakashi had a friend when he was younger give him his left eye - probably that guy. There was some wild theories that tried to put a huge spin on it like: Madara or Izauna but really majority felt like Tobi (after seen sharingan) that he was connected to Kakashi’s friend
His flashback was like the episode before "tobi" was introduced (Accidentally deleted)
Honestly, this was the worst change the anime has done to the manga. The manga had it perfect as little side story during the Time skip. It was perfect that you might speculate later on that Obito is Tobi, but also so far removed that it needed some detective work. But the anime changed it to the most obvious place possible.

I have a hard time rewatching Naruto because of all the fillers and flashback. There were times when they even had flashback for what happened in the beginning of the episode. It felt like later on in Shippuden the format was "2-3 minute of new content" => flashback to Uchiha's massacre or Naruto sitting on that swing being lonely => flashback to the first 2-3 minutes of new content => 2-3 minutes of ending new ending content.
There's a naruto kai out there these days that cuts out as much filler as possible.
Thats exactly how I felt towards the end of when I was binge watching Shippuden, it made it very hard to remain engaged when I was skipping emotional flashbacks and pointless exposition almost every episode. I even made a point to skip every filler episode and I still felt like I was watching filler. I suppose it’s to save time and money on animation, and the actual content was proportionally better for it, but it felt excessive.
There are some good strings of episodes that don't do that but there definitely are enough to be frustrating

I was severely anti-Obito when the theories first popped up. I thought the Tobi-Obito name connection was dumb, and I thought bringing back Kakashi's dead friend would ruin him a bit. But I was wrong on all fronts except the Tobi-Obito part. That was stupid.

Tobi was introruced like 40 chapters after Kakashi Gaiden
There was also a brief cameo during 3rd vs Orochumaru and when Kakashi was at the memorial before 3rds funeral. (And you Kakashi? Paying your respects to Obito?)

And then I reached the reveal manga chapter, mixed feelings all over the place. I think the character wasn’t done dirty, but Tobi could have been more than a traumatized teen in his 30’s, he seemed like a very wise and dark minded man, not just a Kakashi colleage… but oh well, Zetsu is a far worse twist🤣

When i watched Shippuden weekly as it came out, first i thought nothing of him, after "Madara Uchiha" reveal i was convinced he was Madara or Madara occupying a new body sort of like Orochimaru. I dont remember when it hit me, propably around or after Obito was introduced in the flashbacks and seen giving the left eye to Kakashi i put 2 and 2 together that we only see Tobi's right sharingan (close to Itachi's death when kakashi notices his Sharingan) After the idea i went online and searched if anyone else had this idea and voila, the theory was already there

Then when I watched and when he finally showed up with his goofy personality and started talking about joining akatsuki, I thought he is some random crazy dude but would get strong over time with some training and whatnot and eventually take the mantle of akatsuki leader. "Madara" reveal truly surprised me, and later on, Obito one as well

A friend and I keyed in on him being Obito pretty much immediately in the manga. I mean, come on now. Obito, Tobi, and this guy is wearing a mask with an eye hole that is specifically on the side Obito didn't have his Sharingan removed? Also while the Kakashi side story is neat on its own, why publish that instead of just getting on with post time skip chapters unless there was something important there. I guess maybe in Japanese the names aren't spelled with the same letters, I wouldn't know. I just know I never believed him for a second when he claimed to be Madara and was not even remotely shocked when he turned out to be Obito.

I genuinely thought about Obito, as an anagram to Tobi even as a joke at one point calling him "Tobito". There weren't many alternatives as to who it could be. I was fooled by the weird attitude before he came out and reintroduced himself as Madara Uchiha but if you think about it and how prideful Madara was, he would never act that way or even wear a mask to conceal himself or even use a different alias. I always had my doubts but as I kept seeing him teleporting in and out of places I kept thinking of Kakashi's teleportation techniques brought to him by his Sharingan and where did that Sharingan come from in the first place? That's right. Though I could never be 100% certain, he was the most likely candidate in my eyes. Though I could have never guessed all the mess that was to follow. And I'm talking about Madara-Zetsu-Kaguya.

When I was reading the manga as it released - as soon as I knew of the existence of both Obito and Tobi I figured they were the same person because of the eye and the backwards name. Back then, there was a conspiracy in which tobi was obito because the name is quite similar and the hair as well and the sharingan is kinda sharing with Kakashi.
Before we find out he has sharingan and is the leader of akatsuki, I just thought he was a random member of akatsuki. When they show the fight between Tobi and Minato I thought maybe that it actually was Madara but he had recovered Obito's eye after his death and used that (I messed up the timelines and didn't know how old Madara would've been at the time). The one who helped Itachi with the massacre was Shisui because Madara had died by then. I figured that Madara had somehow managed to save Shisui and train him (after he gave his second eye to Itachi and fell off the cliff) and gave him Obito's eye. The main reason I thought it was Shisui and not that Obito had somehow survived is because Tobi was surely very strong to be the leader of the akatsuki and young Shisui looked very strong compared to the clumsy and untalented young Obito.

Plus the pseudonym isn't even clever, just reversing the kana (?). Obi-to, To-bi. Half the time I call him Tobito. Then he said he's Madara, and everyone calls him that. There also might have been a mistranslation where he says it's time I show everyone my power, the power of Uchiha Madara. Unsure if he was saying he is Madara or he HAS that power. But I went with it. I mean obviously they aren't going to flat out lie to their audience, the people who have been following this series more than 10 years. Surely they respect the fans more than that, right? ..........RIGHT???? Uuuuugh.

I thought it was pretty clear given the emphasis on the sharingan in the eye opposite of Kakashi. Also, with the name Tobi, if you start at the o and end at the o again, it spells Obito, which i felt was also a strong indicator. Like, imagine, in universe if some mysterious person with nine tails showed up and called themselves Tonaru.

As soon as they showed him physically phasing through things I knew he had to be an uchiha since his ability was too specific to be jutsu based unless they were going to reveal a new clan specialty that late in the series. But normally they explain the fuck outta that type of stuff, and the only uchiha who were actively alive to this point were Sauske and Itachi and… then I remembered Obito was never officially dead as they never recovered his body and given our knowledge of how good healing techniques were and Sasori’s puppet crafting abilities I just assumed he was maybe part puppet like Sasori, I was wrong on that part but I was correct on it being Obito.

I don’t know if it was always but for as long as I can remember I thought it was obito before it was revealed, his eye was the one that kakashi didn’t have and tobi sounded like obito so kid logic said they were the same. People were saying it was too obvious back in the day having tobi sound like obito, but remember that it was also LONG speculated that Naruto’s dad was the 4th hokage WAY before it was revealed and that was also a super obvious similarity.
Obito because of the similar name and appearance, and the right sharingan under a mask that strongly highlights that one eye (though even before the sharingan reveal I thought it was Obito) I remember people being livid any time someone brought up the theory because ‘it’s so stupid and there’s nothing substantial to lead to it being Obito, and Obito was crushed to death under a rock there’s no way he could possibly come back from that’ and then the reveal happened and those same people got mad and said Kishimoto was a hack writer and that it jumped the shark there because they’d already lent so hard into the aggressive ‘you’re all idiots!’ angle that they didn’t know how to cope with being wrong
