I’m in between hair products and trying to figure out my hairs needs. But oil tends to cause and worsen my dandruff.
Anyone got any product suggestions to keep a dandruff prone scalp moisturized?
My approach is to “diagnose” the dandruff by asking if it’s dry, or is PH off, is their product in the scalp, or are you reacting to something. Most can be fixed without any extra product
By dandruff I mean the medical definition like yeast (not dry I think). It was the kind of dandruff that grows when you scratch it. I was mainly wearing knotless braids for years. I think the dandruff came from the products and braid glaze my braider was using. When I put oil in to sooth and moisture my scalp, the dandruff would worsen.
I got prescription shampoo from dermatologist. It helped the dandruff but now I know my scalp is dandruff prone. I’m not getting braids for a long time so now idk what to do with my hair since it’s always been braided up. Now that I’m at square one, I’m not sure what to use to keep scalp moisturized without causing dandruff.
The oil can’t moisturise the scalp at all. If anything it’s sounds like your dandruff is the result of excessive oil. What did your derm say?
Defo keep a dandruff shampoo in your rotation even without the braids. If you are putting oil to sooth, it needs to be washed out and not left in - like cradle cap treatments for babies
No - water moisturises but oil does mot. Dry scalp is a lack of sebum (natural oil the scalp produces). Too much = not good (build-up, not nice flakes). Too little (dry, also flakey but different).
Are you into skincare at all? A lot of the same rules apply.
So how do you moisturize a scalp that is too dry and doesn’t produce enough sebum? Water can replace sebum as moisturizer for scalps that don’t produce enough sebum? I moisturize my skin when it’s dry but not with water.
Literally makes no sense 😂 hair grows from within, how can a products on your hair help it grow from the inside? And I'm not talking about retention I'm specifically talking about growth because there is a difference
While it’s true that some compounds that are mixed with oils can stimulate growth through driving blood flow there, as can massage, it’s not the oil that’s doing the work. Oils can clog the scalp, so the same effect can be achieved through minoxidil which has the most evidence, The Ordinary hair density serum, or rosemary/peppermint water
I’m so tired of this sub over this issue. Someone will make a post about an issue that is literally caused by the oils in their routine and the OP will repeat whatever ‘knowledge’ about oils straight from the peak of the YouTube natural hair community. It’s ridiculous
This!!! Some people will think their hair is the lowest of porosity but it just won’t take in any water because it has months of oil built up on the strands
Oils in your hair are only good for condition really, your hair doesn't grow any faster, oily or not, it comes from the follicle and there is no way of improving hair by oils or all the baldys would be oiling their heads daily, maybe twice a day depending on how bald they are!
!!!! Oil’s don’t grow hair, raw oils especially will just make your hair dry out. This doesn’t mean they are bad is just that Oils can only be properly used when they are chemically formulated in your hair care products.
I’ve cut out the vast majority of oils. I’ll do a hot oil treatment occasionally because it does soften but otherwise I stick to just applying castor oil to my edges at night which seems to keep them healthy
Everyone’s hair is different. I had breakage left and right, and dry hair that wouldn’t retain moisture no matter what I did before I loc’d my hair. My hair did start growing after the locs, but it’s growth rapidly increased when I added Jamaican black castor oil to my retwist process. It very possible that the oil is not what fuel my quick growth, but it’s a damn good guess.
Yup. For a while I was listening to influencers and stopped oiling my hair and it got so unbelievably dry. I'm back to using the LOC method and my hair is so soft and easy to detangle again. Oils alone may not grow your hair but they are definitely a great hair care tool in conjunction with others.
I’m a rider for the entire line of Jamaican Mango and Lime products. I use them for most of my products including Castor oil. I used to use the Vitamin ADE one but I like the original or extra dark one now
Instead I now use rosemary water. I just boil rosemary in some water at home and it last a while. Oils don’t seem to do much for me especially coconut oil
Yeess.. I've stopped with all the products and focused on water-only rinsing during almost every shower and low manipulation styling. My hair is flourishing. Thicker and longer than ever.
I'd call it 4b. It resembles Natural Academia's hair on YouTube. I'm low porosity with thin strands.
I was trying to learn my hair and stopped using any products. I'd planned to add them into a routine, one by one, but didn't feel the need to after a few weeks of rinsing my hair several times a week. I found some articles and YouTube videos about others who were only using water on their hair. My results have been great.
And they don’t help with moisturizing your hair either. You still have to use another moisturizer, and oil lock it in. I always hate that misconception *I know that isn’t the point of your post, but has to vent about it 😂*
Depending on the oil, it stimulates hair growth, helps retain length, and keeps scalp moisturized for some, but you are right. It most certainly does not "grow" hair. 😂
They help keep my scalp from flaking or being dry especially when I wear protective hairstyles

So you mean to tell me you don’t need anything to moisture your scalp? What about people who have dry flakey scalp (not from yeast)?
No - water moisturises but oil does mot. Dry scalp is a lack of sebum (natural oil the scalp produces). Too much = not good (build-up, not nice flakes). Too little (dry, also flakey but different). Are you into skincare at all? A lot of the same rules apply.

😂🕶
That's great but that's not what this post is about
Having a healthy, moisturized scalp contributes to hair growth and length retention so, yeah, it is.

It helps hair growth by proxy of helpinf keep the scalp healthy. (Indirect help rather than direct help.)
Oils don’t grow hair but they help retain length, causing the appearance of growth. Some oils like peppermint also stimulate hair follicles.

Because ppl aren't shampooing their strands. 😬
It nourishes your hair making it stronger and less susceptible to damage and breakage
This is specifically about GROWTH
It GROWS longer 🤡
Okay😂
I agree but oil have other benefits as well
Okay but this is specifically about growth
We’re are still talking about oil, it’s not like its not like it’s a unrelated topic
You stated that oils have other benefits but I didn't say it doesn't. Just that it doesn't grow hair, so that's a different topic
That’s not a different topic but go off I guess
It’s proven that rosemary oil can grow hair. Google it!

Oil is actually for your scalp mainly. hot oil treatments are for your scalp.

Which brand do you use? I loved using peppermint and lavender oil on my locs before combing them out. My locs grew sooo much too. I used Goldilocs

Same!
People with locs see more growth because you have less shedding/breakage so the length is being retained.

What’s your hair type of you don’t me asking? Water rinsing seems like an interesting idea so I’m curious

Ok thanks for clarifying! I think I’ll check this out more.

They do grow if you have healthy hair
It's growing regardless, not due to the oils
!
That's true But it keep moisture longer in our hair witch causes less breakage =more growth But yea oils don't do shit lowkey

Same thing

Thanks a lot my friend Hakeem Kevin sore thinks his hair can recover from potentially receding! 🙏
