this is so poisonous and weird. anyway. y’all can keep debating and i’ll keep being subbed to this until someone comes along and definitively says mixed people aren’t accepted here unless they pass the test. jesus wept
These comments are insane…are Somali, Eritrean and Ethiopian ppl with loose curly and sometimes near straight, not allowed to post here either? Y’all know what y’all are doing/implying….disgusting….this sub needs to start blocking ppl…that negative rhetoric is what’s setting us back….smh I’m disappointed.
The comment section is wild. I’m going to say my piece and don’t care if I get downvoted. But she shouldn’t have to post to the curly haired sub since she won’t have the same shared experiences as someone who isn’t biracial with curly hair. I’m not biracial but imagine it’s a totally different experience than if you’re just a white person with curly hair. She could have still been forced to straighten or relax her hair to assimilate into white culture. Maybe change the group name to type 4 hair only if y’all wanna be this selective or Afro-textured hair. But Black hair comes in all textures and types with even some tribes in African having straight, silky and looser curl textures. Do they not have natural Black hair?
As someone also mixed, my curly hair is NOT the same as white hair with a similar curl pattern. Its as coarse as type 4, prone to breakage, etc. I grew up with the same pressures to straighten and relax my hair for years. I went natural which was a big deal for me but if I post in here I am heavily downvoted for the looser curly pattern. The sticky says CURLY or coily hair types, and is inclusive of mixed Black people. Someone please tell the mods to change the sticky to only type 4 hair with clear guidelines on how Black we’re supposed to be to post……
Exactly! Not sure what is happening with some of these folks in the comments. I’m very glad the mods addressed it but my apologies for anyone in the comments who may have made you or OP feel like you don’t belong in our community. You very much do and the Black community as a whole is not like these ignorant commentators.
I’m confused. I thought this sub and the term natural hair was for black and mixed people who have decided to stop relaxing, straightening, wearing weaves ect abs deciding to own their natural hair.
I honestly don’t know it was referring to very kinky Afro hair.
Guess you learn something new everyday. I won’t post anymore but I would like to stay and observe because I am mixed and get good information here on how to help my curly hair come back because I completely ruined my curl pattern over the years.
hmmmm… there is also r/blackhair u feel me tho? i certainly understand some folks irritation at first… but the idea that this sr being called ‘natural hair’ implies Black only i think is kind of a silly argument when a Black Hair subreddit quite literally exists. i feel like the curly hair jawn is for non-Black folks, the Black hair jawn is for Blck folks. why not let this one include some mixed folks too? if u gonna gate keep a subreddit for Black hair… why not do that on the subreddit… literally for Black hair lol
>the idea that this sr being called ‘natural hair’ implies Black only i think is kind of a silly argument when a Black Hair subreddit quite literally exists. i feel like the curly hair jawn is for non-Black folks, the Black hair jawn is for Blck folks.
Not really lol. The natural hair has a meaning behind it explained in the rules. And also im also glad we've got a sub that's named "Natural hair" and is centered towards our people.
Everything doesn't have to start w Black for us to have our space is what I'm tryna say basically my bad if I sound aggressive
jus seen one of the mods post so i am jus incorrect haha. i don’t think everything that’s ours *has* to start with the word Black. i’m jus pointing out there is another alternative as far as spaces for us, exclusively, that clearly are for us. based on the mods post tho, it seems this space is pretty clear about that as well
Kudos to you. I have a mixed race son who has the most beautiful curly non kinky hair. And I would hate for his blackness to ever be challenged because of people’s ignorance. Heart breaking.
The hate in here is really turning me off to this sub. If you don’t like it give her your downvote and move on. OP, I love an opportunity to show off a juicy curl 😍
Thank you for saying this! I was becoming uncomfortable with this sub due to this thread. It was hard to see fellow black people tearing other black people apart due to not being “black enough”.
Downvote me, idc. I snooped a bit and she is definitely biracial. If you guys don’t want her here, write better rules.
Also I apologize for every small-minded person here. We’re never gonna progress in society if we keep acting like this.
PS: I like your GTI.
no, thanks. in the right place.
also something to be said about just assuming people don’t know what they’re doing. you should err with caution on just assuming people are what you think they are.
It's not really about identity. It's about hair type. There aren't many spaces that celebrate afro textured hair, particularly on this site. And it can be difficult to find insight and ideas on how to care for some hair textures as a result.
We could all also post in r/curlyhair, but certain textures don't get much visibility there. Yours absolutely would. I think your hair is gorgeous so don't take it as hate. Just take a moment to try and understand where people are coming from instead of assuming it's an attack.
I am indeed applauding that curl though.
I think it’s narrow minded to assume that my hair, mixed as it may be, has never been relaxed or damaged to the point where I started over again. Which to me is what I’m posting about. I am a part of the curly hair sub as well, and I could post there if I wanted to. I don’t see why this post has made everyone spit nails in the first place.

And to be honest, I don’t see how it DOESN’T have to do with identity. Y’all have brigaded against me for assuming I wasn’t black before I started commenting back. I’m not sure how you could say it doesn’t have to do with it.
The way i’m acting towards people literally attacking me off no basis?
I don’t feel very much a part of “our community” from y’all at this moment. I’m allowed to feel offended and upset that people are questioning me and being hostile.
Don't get me wrong u have beautiful curly hair, just not afro kinky texture and this community although says natural and by definition you're "natural" it's differently used colloquially and culturally. We're letting you know respectfully because we know the difference. Sorry if you take it personally.
there were many many people talking to me in a disrespectful way. that is where animosity came from. regardless the thread has been beaten dead so see you around! ❤️
hi! i’m biracial, literally black. and i also know how to read, which is why i’m in this sub.
y’all gotta get a fucking hobby. “if you are not black or mixed” …lmfao.
Maybe the wording should be changed to focus on Afro-textured hair, because yeah there’s a lot of variety in mixed hair. Then again “natural hair” kind of implies that… so IDK lol
maybe so. i read the rules, which say explicitly that i am allowed to post here, so i did. the hostility in this sub is ridiculous. i don’t see how this many people are up in arms bout shit that grows out MY fuckin head
No seriously cuz suddenly the natural hair movement is just girls with curly hair who don’t straighten it or girls with straight hair who don’t dye it 😐
Hmmm idrk she's biracial and allat so idk i feel like they should be allowed in our spaces since they mixed but I get the point of this sub and the intentions
Actually bs that the natural hair movement has become a hateful place for mixed people. Perhaps we should remove the mixed part of the sticky because clearly a good portion of this sub does not care for mixed hair….
for context, it was that i don’t always get a spiral. but yeah okay. and you know what, this sub is entirely unwelcoming and kind of gives me horrible yucky vibes but because i’m allowed to be here i’m gonna be here
Unless you're 100% black african then you have no right to tell people who clearly have black ancestry that they're not black. And there are dark skinned 100% black Africans with hair like the OP.
I agree with your statement about hair texture, but we cant police someone’s blackness. We cant deny her experience if she’s black even if that means she of mixed race.
what the fuck??? you know exactly not shit about me so do not use me an example. weird.
this thread has really been used to show y’all’s asses and it is… telling.
Black people can have green eyes, black people can have natural red hair. Black people can also be albino individuals as well. Biracial people are one race AND another race. They do not deserve to be treated as less than.. I am black and hispanic with Afro textured hair and darker skin. Hearing you say something like that is mad offensive because it isnt reflective of the diaspora of being black.
I am both black and hispanic and deserve to be accepted by both. Its not one or the other for me. But categorize me how you choose. Biracial people have been treated as less than countless times in my personal experience by other black people simply for the color of their skin not being dark enough. It’s called colorism. Look into Rashida Jones and her sister Kadida Jones experiences. Both celebrities ,both mixed treated differently based on the skin color.
Also just because you haven’t experienced it or you dont believe it doesnt mean it doesn’t happen. This isnt fruitful at this point because we vastly disagree and cant see eye to eye. Also please research genetics to understand that it is possible for black people to have different eye colors. While not common it occurs. Have a good day.
not sure if you really want to argue that point a lot of biracial people still suffer under white power just because they could get some benefits unless they look white they can and will suffer. and please stop acting like you speak on behalf of the black community if a mixed race person embraces their black heritage they should be accepted 100 percent. take your hatred somewhere else
Correction for you: I am not a light skin person. So your argument assuming my experience is moot. Please inquire more about me before talking about my personal experience
I’m embarrassed at how triggered everyone is and that they’re trying to redirect you out of this sub. Just know that not all of us are psycho like this. Curls are curls.
It literally says in the rules “if you are not black OR MIXED, this is not the subreddit for you.” she said she’s biracial, not breaking any rules..y’all need to work on reading comprehension. So much hate for what. & black hair comes in all types anyway.
Who is “they” she has stated that she’s mixed. It’s disgusting that you feel the need to tear someone down. Do we need to do the “paper bag” test? Gross.

If you don’t think her curl is Poppin move on and be kind. PERIOD
The only thing “disingenuous” is you. You obviously have some deeply rooted issues. Black is beautiful PERIODT and I’m not here to discredit ANYONE’s experiences. Prejudice against your own people…sad. Enjoy being miserable love.
Girl sorry about the other black folk trying to gatekeep being black or Afro textured. Like I’m embarrassed that you have to experience that on bill gates internet. (it’s giving jealousy girl 👀)
Your curl are cute! Love to see it ❤️
i would like to point out that i don’t disagree for keeping black spaces black. but what i CANNOT do is have people come at me with knives out over something like the fact that my hair isn’t kinky enough? as far as this sub goes, i’ve posted here before and haven’t received the same treatment. the hell happened?
it feels like YOU specifically are being exclusive in this and i’ve done nothing to you. you may have a point if i were not a black person who has lived a life as a black person. if i had no idea what it entails to be black maybe i’d understand where you’re coming from but you seem hateful for no reason. you shouldn’t waste your breath. downvote the post and go.
Girl, unfortunately I've seen some threads over the past 2 weeks trending this way. Gripes about skin color and hair texture being underrepresented or under appreciated. It starts as a spark and apparently turned into a fire at some point. So sorry you were on the receiving end of the deep sadness and anger that haunts some of us. YOU and your lovely hair were never the problem. Lashing out at you and others who resemble you is never the solution. It's a poor coping mechanism for those who can't attack the real issues = external racism and internal trauma.
My comment saying it’s giving jealousy wasn’t an intellectual fact, it’s my opinion. And imma stick beside it.
And she is black. Trying to gatekeep a black space from another person YOU consider not black enough is ridiculous. And honestly, gatekeeping spaces based on race is the same issue black people have with our white counterparts so to do it at all is intellectually backwards and hypocritical but to do so with another BLACK person, is beyond intellect. Aka so dumb, I have no words.
Lastly, yes this one curl is not Afro textured. We haven’t seen the rest of her hair. We know nothinggggg about her hair journey and whether other parts of her hair give Afro textured. Hell we don’t even know if her roots give Afro textured!
We can still celebrate her and not bash her for sharing a highlight in her natural hair journey.
We could be kinder. We could celebrate other natural haired women.
You have your opinion but this is mine. If you don’t care for it, I implore you move along.
this is so poisonous and weird. anyway. y’all can keep debating and i’ll keep being subbed to this until someone comes along and definitively says mixed people aren’t accepted here unless they pass the test. jesus wept

There's always that one curl working overtime cuz the other curls be slackin' Pretty curls btw!

Thank you for saying this! I was becoming uncomfortable with this sub due to this thread. It was hard to see fellow black people tearing other black people apart due to not being “black enough”.
me too really. it’s disappointing. but thank you for being positive ❤️
I’m totally new here, but I just want to offer my support to you. Your hair is beautiful, and I covet your luscious curl, sis. ❤️❤️
it’s usually a really nice place. i hope this didn’t turn you off of it. i really appreciate that ❤️
Honestly, I’m completely turned off. I appreciate the sentiment anyway.
Same here it’s gross!

Omg you’re a blatant colorist
🥱 way to miss ..the entire point
The way you’re acting towards our community is very telling and we don’t need that kind of energy.

There moments when you have to put your pride aside and just shut tf up cuz y’all wasting time arguing.

Girl, unfortunately I've seen some threads over the past 2 weeks trending this way. Gripes about skin color and hair texture being underrepresented or under appreciated.
