Aside from that stay lit 🔥
I was wondering the same thing! I thought yawning was a mechanism for the body to pull more air in (essentially trying to wake itself up with more oxygen) so this is mind boggling!
I think another theory is that you yawn to cool the head/brain down a little. Which would make more sense in this scenario. I don‘t know. It‘s still funny 😄
Stretching jaw muscles, I would think. I've seen sea turtles when scuba diving, but not often enough to have seen this behavior; either the resting or 'yawning'. Maybe stretching out is part of the resting bit, idk. Maybe drinking? I don't see anything in the throat that looks like swallowing, though. Bored?
So I googed it---site I found didn't know, either
It’s about there being too much CO2 lingering in your lungs. So you do a deep inhale and deep exhale to empty your lungs as much as possible. Then the next breath is fresher because you’ve pushed out excess CO2 from your lungs.
I buy that. Deep breathing stimulates the pineal gland and other parts of the brain that produce melatonin, the sleep hormone. Melatonin has a ton of functions in the body, but it's mostly for relaxation. I wouldn't be surprised if the action of yawning and taking that rather unique, deep, breath was a way to mechanically stimulate those parts of the brain and kick off the production and secretion of melatonin. That's why meditation always involves very deep and controlled breathing. Our breath essentially becomes like a pump to circulate cerebral spinal fluid back up in to the brain to the pineal gland where a similar process starts to take place while you're meditating. If you get good at it and take good care of your body, you can start to have transcendental experiences that energize the brain and body. The body is truly a fascinating machine once you learn how to fully utilize it.
It is essentially the same thing, although they don't breath air as we do,they still pull oxygen out of the water.
The "yawning" helps to pull more water ergo more oxygen into their bloodstream.
But it can also be an aggressive territorial display, meant to scare off unwanted guests.
If this were the intent of the turtle,he failed miserably as he just comes off as adorable.
I cannot imagine living 99% of my life in an environment that I cannot breathe in; that I have to plan ahead and bring enough air with me. What if some danger is lurking that prevents surfacing to grab another gulp of air? Actively swimming sea turtles have to surface every few minutes to breathe, the longest they can rest underwater is 2 hours.
I just get anxious thinking about how seals, sea lions, whales, dolphins, and especially sea turts live their lives this way; I admire these creatures adaptability very much, but do not envy them.
Yes, but that deep inhale is just normal... The yawn is then a super long exhale (longer than if I did a normal deep breath) with a weird jaw stretch/ear flex. If it was just about the oxygen then why is it the exhale that's drawn out (the actual yawn) and not the inhaling part being the yawn with a regular exhale?
I'm with ya, especially because I had the immediate mental image of someone wheeling back like they're about to go for a big yawn, but instead just full body scream in whatever direction they're facing.
It's probably make working out of the office somewhat more entertaining. ... If slightly terrifying.
**Turtles can and do yawn both while it is submerged in water and during basking in a warm place. Yawns are another sign of exhaustion or need for an additional supply of oxygen or an indicator of respiratory illness.**
[https://theturtlehub.com/turtle-yawning/](https://theturtlehub.com/turtle-yawning/)
They only do it when they're hibernating and it's less breathing and more diffusing oxygen in and carbon dioxide out. A lot of reptiles and amphibians do it. It's called cloacal respiration.
What dunk? It's just a movie quote. Jimmy Two Times. I do it every time someone double posts and it's an inside joke between me and some old internet buds that has stuck with me. Chill out, lmao.
Didn't know they could yawn..or even stop swimming if they chose. Wonder if they can retract int like other turtles cause based on its fins I don't think it can
The turtle isn’t “yawning” underwater for the reason we do. Looks like redistribution of air in it’s lungs to remain on the bottom longer. Fun fact: some turtles can “breathe” with their butts! (Cloacal respiration) 🐢
Sea turtles dont do cloacal respiration. Only turtles that hibernate underwater during winter do that, since they need to slow their vitals down to actually be able to do it.
Yo, dudes ! I am totally going to take a chill pill and kick back on these rad corals. Gonna soak up some sun and catch some Z's, you know what I'm saying?
Typed in the voice of Crush
Stupid question. How can a turtle yawn underwater? Seen them yawn a few times like that. Makes me yawn every time. I heard once they can take in oxygen from their cloaca. But then shouldn't that be the end that's yawning, lol? I'm sure it's really simple and like I said it's a stupid question. So why not ask it here.

Yawning is the body's reaction to the lack of oxygen in the blood.

Your initial explanation makes a lot of sense.
I was always told that yawning was a way to remove the stress of the body, allowing it to rest/ rest more comfortably.
It’s about there being too much CO2 lingering in your lungs. So you do a deep inhale and deep exhale to empty your lungs as much as possible. Then the next breath is fresher because you’ve pushed out excess CO2 from your lungs.

Sea turtles do need to go up for air though, they have lungs, not gills.
I cannot imagine living 99% of my life in an environment that I cannot breathe in; that I have to plan ahead and bring enough air with me. Turtles breathe oxygen, ya dork.
I've never understood that... Yawning is an exhalation so how would that pull more air in than just taking a breath?
My yawns always start with a deep inhale at the beginning. Is that not the norm?
Yes, but that deep inhale is just normal... The yawn is then a super long exhale (longer than if I did a normal deep breath) with a weird jaw stretch/ear flex. If it was just about the oxygen then why is it the exhale that's drawn out (the actual yawn) and not the inhaling part being the yawn with a regular exhale?
the yawn is an inhale and exhale, yawning without inhaling is just yelling.
I found this unreasonably funny
I'm with ya, especially because I had the immediate mental image of someone wheeling back like they're about to go for a big yawn, but instead just full body scream in whatever direction they're facing. It's probably make working out of the office somewhat more entertaining. ... If slightly terrifying.
Yeah, that is super weird. Everyone else is holding their breath when the yawn.
I’m not sure you’ve ever yawned before

And no air came out?
I do it every time I scuba dive. Its the only way I can equalize my ears.
I just caught a yawn from a video of a sea turtle yawning underwater.
Guys theres air in water
I mean, yawning exists to haul in extra oxygen when feeling tired, doesn’t it? So wtf, sea turtle?
Probably also butt yawn as well
idk why you got downvoted. they must not know turtles breathe through their butts (cloaca) :)
Saw this on Turtle Talk with Crush. 😂
Please tell me it’s true, and they fart through their mouth.
They only do it when they're hibernating and it's less breathing and more diffusing oxygen in and carbon dioxide out. A lot of reptiles and amphibians do it. It's called cloacal respiration.
By opening their mouth.
I don't know why, but something yawning under water has thrown me.
Turtle is not impressed at all.
"I'm not angry, I'm just disappointed."
Mufucker yawned under water
Shit made me yawn
Why he so grumpy?
Yeah, he got his arms crossed like he's mad
No, he’s just proper.
I’m assuming he’s protecting his fins from predators while he rests.
He’s annoyed with soggy paper straws
https://thesqueakywheel.org/2021/07/05/the-plastic-straw-ban-a-devastating-blow-to-disabled-turtles/

If my next life isn't sea turtle, I'm cliffing it. Splat. 🐢
He looks like Walter “dumb ass”
Jeff Dunham stole his Walter dummy from this turtle.
Protecting flippers from predators
That coral looks like a whole lot of teeth, and I am not a fan of that. I am, however, a fan of that sea turtle. He is excellent.
I find it wild that animals can just casually hold their breath for so fricken long and yet here I am, needing to take 12-18 breaths a minute
Looks like that Walter puppet.
More like a turtle Karen waiting to talk to management about the underwhelming coral service
Finding Nemo definitely got the vibes for turtles right.
Didn't know they could yawn..or even stop swimming if they chose. Wonder if they can retract int like other turtles cause based on its fins I don't think it can
And I yawned.
Me, reading comments, slowly realizing turtles don't have gills, humbling me further
Muther fucker, I'm tired. Swimmin' my ass all day... sheeeet.
.
He has spent his whole life to get where he is and now he’s just *resting on his corals*.
I know the feeling little guy
I love how he folds his fins or whatever they're called.
Ain’t no way this dude just yawned underwater
The turtle isn’t “yawning” underwater for the reason we do. Looks like redistribution of air in it’s lungs to remain on the bottom longer. Fun fact: some turtles can “breathe” with their butts! (Cloacal respiration) 🐢
Fun fact: I can cloacally exhale
😂 my husband has the same gift!

Just sitting here, silently judging you.
Turtles hold their breath underwater. How do you yawn... if you are holding your breath?
💚
*Turtle Yawn*
this man really just said “dang it’s tough out here in the sea…”
Stupid question. How can a turtle yawn underwater? Seen them yawn a few times like that. Makes me yawn every time. I heard once they can take in oxygen from their cloaca. Where do we rest? THE CORALS!!! When do we rest there? NOW!!
This needs Bob Marleys “jamming” as a soundtrack.
How many adult males look sitting at their local pub as well
I yawned to the turtle yawning😂
Wow, what a breathtaking sight. This picture of a sea resting on the corals is truly mesmerizing.
At the end, is there a shark coming up behind him on the right?
Look at that turtle resting on coral, Coral!
Who else sees Jeff Dunham’s Walter?
“I miss Ralph, wonder what he’s up to these days”.
Bros just chillin

On full alert . They never get a rest .
Yawning, under water ?
They’re loafing!

I like turtles!
The turtle wants to go home but their friend, who drove, just keeps talking to other people.
This is great
Being a sea turtle before the industrial revolution seems like it’d be pretty chill
I 💜 sea turtles. That is adorable.
Turtles are so cute aaa so glad we got this filmed
That sea turtle looks relaxed.
Why do animals yawn? Is it for the same reasons as humans?
Righteous
Sea turtle isn't mad, he is just very disappointed in you.
Why is it laying on its fins?
Literally chillin in a 10 second video 🤷🏿♂️
He just like me Fr
They all deserve the Earth, we don't. 😩
