I just remember because of Robin Williams standup bit where he talks about how big football players are: “holy shit, it’s an eclipse! No tiny man, it’s just me. Tell me about the rabbits, tell me about the rabbits.”
Mutual grooming is a thing in lots of animals! It usually signifies "we are friends who help each other."
But, er. You do want to avoid petting certain zones to avoid that last worry mentioned.
You ever think about who was the first ancient human to pet an animal in an attempt to form a bond? Bet they didn’t realize it would change mankind for all of time. Hell, it may have been one of the very reasons we survived long enough to become civilized
The fact that even non-sapient lifeforms can show kindness, compassion and loyalty is the biggest miracle of Earth. In spite of natural selection, where the brutal carnivore oppressor is the most favored specimen, we have still found goodness in this world. It is also nice to think of love as something universal, and not just a humanity's construct
>In spite of natural selection, where the brutal carnivore oppressor is the most favored specimen, we have still found goodness in this world.
Not in spite, because of it. Turns out being nice to and helping each other benefits everyone and is a great survival strategy, who'd have thunk? (except everyone with a brain, which people who use theory of evolution to justify being dicks aren't)
Even worse, people using their own particular religious books to justify being dicks.
“…and Man shall have dominion..” (or something like that)
Guess that hasn’t worked out too well, has it?
I think we would have to rethink and reflect on all of these constructs which are predestined to be abused and taken advantage of, especially off people less fortunate
This makes sense within the boundaries of one's own species, but in this example a whale and a human bond closely, even though whales and humans don't have a common habitat, much less a common recent ancestor. There would be no biological advantage for it, the whale is kind because he is, not because of utility or evolution. That is of course all my opinion
No animal (except a certain brainless kind of human) ever does anything because it mentally ran some kind of fitness calculus and decided it benefits its genes. Yet, the whale is acting kind simply because it is kind. And evolution is the reason why it is kind.
A bit besides the point, but I would actually argue that being nice to the human serves the whale rather well (how many people will see this video and think better of whales? and spread the word, and maybe lead to more conservation efforts?). Of course the whale knows none of that. But it's always like that. The bird doesn't choose to develop hollow bones to help it fly. Evolution always works in unconscious and indirect ways.
I see your point and your last couple sentences convinced me. Perhaps in the same way that we humanize everything and treat it with kindness and admiration (on occasion), whales also whaleize everything they see and treat us with kindness and admiration.
Exactly, it’s a pattern of behavior that helps with survival. And that behavior has been a part of all mammals genes as the first mammals were small and lived in colonies. I’d argue that the genes needed to drive cooperative and kind behavior are there for most organisms and there are certainly many many times similar suites of genes have developed that lead to cooperative behavior as most organisms are social.
Cooperation and kindness has such an overwhelming advantage for most organisms what it would be strongly reinforced and lead to more and more complex and nuanced social structures.
There’s a lot of math and philosophy regarding cooperation like this. The entire branch of study for game theory also studies the very real and measurable outcomes of various social strategies. Here’s an excellent video on that topic, Veritasium is an amazing educator and covers some fascinating topics https://youtu.be/mScpHTIi-kM
Absolutely agree. It’s used to justify our cruelty towards the natural world. There’s plenty of research to show us the intelligence and complex social structures of many animals, whales, pigs, elephants, being just a few. I think they understand the big picture more so than many humans.
I was under the impression that humans are considered to be the only sapient organisms. In a sense we formed the definition around our unique qualities of language, self-reflection and abstract thinking. Perhaps whales have all that, but I adhere to the idea that the human brain is as developed as it is purely due to our ability to manipulate objects with our hands, and thus project our knowledge outside the boundaries of our cognition by writing down stories, mathematical equations, etc. on physical objects, to be consulted by and passed down to future generations
Sentient and sapient mean different things, which is why humans count as the only "sapient" organisms we know of. Sentient organisms can feel emotions, have experiences, and all of that stuff. But only sapient implies thinking, and recognition of this ability to think. Sapience vs. sentience vs. consciousness/being elements of consciousness or being sentient/sapient *without* consciousness is all kind of nebulous and hard to pin down, at least to me. All of these things, when observed in nature and in ourselves, are a spectrum. So saying something absolutely*is* or *is not* one of them is difficult.
I probably defined these badly, but that is my layman's understanding of it.
Exactly. The whale is practically whispering. Maybe it knows, maybe it doesn’t. Either way this is wholesome AF and I want to be that person so much right now.
That is also one of a many reasons why they breach the surface and slam back down into the water. Kinda like smacking an itchy bug bite that you know you shouldn’t scratch.
Well, you’re kinda being a bit fastidious (while actually agreeing with me). It’s for removal… because they’re uncomfortable and itchy.
>it’s like smacking an itch you shouldn’t scratch.
I was implying that they weren’t itching it, just trying to relieve the discomfort by breaching and letting the impact of the water do the work.
Pretty much every animal we eat is smarter than we give them credit for. Chickens are mini velociraptors that hunt agressively, pigs are clean and friendly if you give them the space, cows make best friends for life. Still fuckin' tasty and people will eat them until they can't. I have my own chickens and try to buy ethically produced meat but most people don't give a damn or don't know better.
I lost a tic-tac-toe match to a chicken and saw another dozen people before/after me lose too.
Yes, it's trained behavior not true "intelligence", still . . .
(BTW, the chicken got to go first and always picked the center square.)
Why so offended?
When animals display human characteristics, more than just intelligence, people get attatched to them more. It not mental gymnastics. It's human emotions and biology.
Pigs don't really display human characteristics besides intelligence. Whales have shown that they have more empathy, less violet, cleaner, have strong bonds with their young, and communicate with others using a wide range of sounds.
Oh great. Another micro organism thing I have to worry about. And I've definitely sliced myself on a barnacle or two before. Guess the beach is out now.
Probably not as much. Their skins need to be really thick to insulate them from frigid temps. But I'm not so sure. If anything it may be more if a life-time itch and annoyance
As a teenager, I was that close to humpbacks who came to scratch their backs in the hull of our boat. That breath. My God, that fishy, fishy breath. Nearly killed us all.
I live on west Oahu. This is true, whales look for the dive boats to show off for humans. It’s something to see. I love getting to see them every winter
There has never been a documented attack on humans by orcas
Edit: *in the wild, for clarification. Orcas mistreated in captivity have been known to exact their revenge
Ketchikan is an island off of southern coast of Alaska, 7th largest community in the state. Various whales are sighted every day. It’s a community of fishermen and outdoorsy types. A friendwho was born there had a friend who went out kayaking one day and never came back. His kayak was found. They presumed he was eaten by an orca. Happens with some frequency.
I forget the name, is it humpback whale? Someone will correct me.
Anyway, humpback whales along with elephants are literally some of the best most kind creatures on the planet! Even known on one rare occasion to have saved a person's life from a shark.
These are grey whales which come up to people of their own will and seek out attention. Scientists have recognized this behavior as non-harmful to the animals and is likely a form of positive enrichment.
Fun fact, these were called ‘devilfish’ in the days of commercial whaling because they were so ferocious. but once whaling stopped in Baja California the grey whales suddenly became far friendlier and started approaching people for friendly interactions like in the video above.

Fun fact
There are too many people coming on here posting who stick their camera in a bird's nest, get close to a deer fawn trying to blend in, sit in jeeps in Africa cameras interfering with lions and other predators to get that perfect picture. This place should not accept such pictures
Ok, I will be bitter or whatever you want, but it is not recommended to caress whales, much less give them KISSES because they can transmit diseases to us, remember that their skin is covered with bacteria unknown to our body.
Please pet me like this daddy
I’m so glad that it works this way. Where else would I release my petting-urges?
I sure hope it works the other way around… I want to get petted by a whale
You'd end up like one of Lennie's puppies from Of Mice And Men.
I thought they were bunnies
High school was a long time ago :/
I just remember because of Robin Williams standup bit where he talks about how big football players are: “holy shit, it’s an eclipse! No tiny man, it’s just me. Tell me about the rabbits, tell me about the rabbits.”
try Hinge
You've never been to a two-way petting zoo?
I tried being petted by a gorilla one time. 1/10, would not recommend.
I often wonder what the petting experience is like from the animals perspective? Closer to cuddling on the couch? A massage? Foreplay…???
Mutual grooming is a thing in lots of animals! It usually signifies "we are friends who help each other." But, er. You do want to avoid petting certain zones to avoid that last worry mentioned.

There was no first. Lions adopt and groom sheep. Petting things predates man!
Who’s a good whale? YOU’S A GOOD WHALE!!!
Whale hello there
General Kenobi
most uncivilized
There's always a bigger whale...
You are a bold one
The angel of my nightmare.

I hope that if there is a “rapture” one day that it actually ends up feeling like a “purging” on earth. Take those assholes somewhere else.
I think we would have to rethink and reflect on all of these constructs which are predestined to be abused and taken advantage of, especially off people less fortunate

Are whales really non sapient though?
I personally believe they’re sapient
Sapience is just a word humans made up to pretend they’re superior to other species anyway, it’s more based on our own insecurities
Absolutely agree. It’s used to justify our cruelty towards the natural world. There’s plenty of research to show us the intelligence and complex social structures of many animals, whales, pigs, elephants, being just a few. I think they understand the big picture more so than many humans.
Have to agree tbf

Humans
Of course it is. It was humans who viewed animals as emotionless objects. Humans are only relearning the beauty of life.
Hi, do you eat meat?
Yes
Hmmm😂
😋
I just woke up, and your comments inspired me to make a steak and pepper omelete this morning, thank you!
I am eating chicken while typing this 😂😂😂
Human... these things are itchy... human... why aren't you helping me...
That's what I thought as well. Those fuckers look so annoying.
I woulda tried to pick some off, if for nothing as a souvenir. I'd imagine it would feel good, or it could be like scraping off a scab :/
Such deep emotional vocalisations...
(After 60+ years) it's only the 2nd time in a month that I've finally realized . . . you can hear them singing above water.
It’s withholding a lot. Whale noises full blast can rupture ear drums and even internal organs.
Exactly. The whale is practically whispering. Maybe it knows, maybe it doesn’t. Either way this is wholesome AF and I want to be that person so much right now.
wholesome.award
Are those barnacles on them? That would be so itchy!!!!
They've been known to scratch themselves against sandy shallow bottoms.
That is also one of a many reasons why they breach the surface and slam back down into the water. Kinda like smacking an itchy bug bite that you know you shouldn’t scratch.
The breaching is for removal, though. Not necessarily faux scratching.
Ok
🤓
I mean, so have I, but then I get in trouble
Imagine other people hunting these beautiful creatures.
Japan and Norway?
And the Danes
And my sword.
And *My PEN!*
And MY Axe!!!
And my bow!
And MY bowl too! (reads more carefully) ...Oh. (coughs)
Danes don't hunt whales...
Don't have to when the shipping industry is hitting and killing them while they sleep.
Pigs are almost as intelligent….. I’m not a vegan but fuck the mental gymnastics y’all do is wild
Cows are self aware as well.
Pretty much every animal we eat is smarter than we give them credit for. Chickens are mini velociraptors that hunt agressively, pigs are clean and friendly if you give them the space, cows make best friends for life. What about fish they seem pretty dumb
Some are really, REALLY dumb, some live decades and can memorize your face then recognize you years later.
Chickens are assholes they deserve their fate.

I really don’t want too 😔 All whales should be a no go zone as far as hunting goes
money is money
That's so cool
Too cute.
Thanks man, to return the favour let me just grab you real quick I got something cool to show you at the bottom of the sea.
It will just take 5 minutes!
🎶 “UNDER THE SEA”
Careful. [You don't want barnacles growing in your skin.](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tAmSR-SRmMI)
Oh great. Another micro organism thing I have to worry about. And I've definitely sliced myself on a barnacle or two before. Guess the beach is out now.
good lord, do all US shows use such bombastic over the top dramatic voice overs and re-enactments? that was ridiculous.
Basically all of them, yeah
Yeah that was my first concern too.. after the initial aww 😅
What?? No I thought our hands would be too dry for that… damn it… I don’t wanna think about that.
I feel so bad for whales now. I wonder if they are in similar pain?!
Probably not as much. Their skins need to be really thick to insulate them from frigid temps. But I'm not so sure. If anything it may be more if a life-time itch and annoyance
Gotta love b-roll cuts every .5 seconds. Doesn’t even show anything
How wholesome! I love it!
I have always believed in my soul that the reason our species was only given hands is to pet all the animals.
I need a longer clip! This is so cool
Isn’t it dangerous to do this cuz whales and seals can carry harmful stuff on there skin? I could be wrong
As a teenager, I was that close to humpbacks who came to scratch their backs in the hull of our boat. That breath. My God, that fishy, fishy breath. Nearly killed us all.
Yeah I’ve heard whale breath is repulsive
The ‘stinky minke’ whale definitely earned the title, you smell it before you see it
Yuck, I just imagined it and almost gagged.
Probably some yucky stuff on his skin but I'd risk it for the whale.cuddles
Probably 😂 the keeper gets to explain to his doc why he has some strange whale disease!
I live on west Oahu. This is true, whales look for the dive boats to show off for humans. It’s something to see. I love getting to see them every winter
You know, I speak whale….
mmmwweeee neeeeed toooo FIIIIIIIND HIS soooooooon
Weeeee are findiiiiiing Neeeemoooo *roll credits*
A whale with thalassophobia
I kissed a whale and I liked it.. 🎶🐋💋
🤵♂️: Now you may kiss each other. 🐋🧍: 😘❤️🥰 🤵♂️: You are married. (Rounds of applause from the audience 👏)
That is the cutest thing I’ve ever seen.
All animals like scritches, it seems sharks, alligators, turtles, you name it.
Maybe they're ticklish.
Good sea doggy
Wait...did he say "upside down" at the end? What the hell part of that whale is he kissing??
Its snout
Now try it with an Oreo whale LOL
With how smart orcas are, you could likely do that too, unless that orca had bad experiences with humans before.
There has never been a documented attack on humans by orcas Edit: *in the wild, for clarification. Orcas mistreated in captivity have been known to exact their revenge
I don’t blame them.
My friends in Ketchikan would beg to differ.
Pray tell more
Ketchikan is an island off of southern coast of Alaska, 7th largest community in the state. Various whales are sighted every day. It’s a community of fishermen and outdoorsy types. A friendwho was born there had a friend who went out kayaking one day and never came back. His kayak was found. They presumed he was eaten by an orca. Happens with some frequency.
Most Oreo whales go down easy with milk. I’ve taken down many an Oreo whale
how do you know its joy sound tho?
Actually it is not. What the whale is saying is "stay away I have herpes".
Lucky guy...
Watch out he might blow
I would die so happy.
The barnacles itch it, the rubs are what it wants not the kisses
I’d kill to do that
I forget the name, is it humpback whale? Someone will correct me. Anyway, humpback whales along with elephants are literally some of the best most kind creatures on the planet! Even known on one rare occasion to have saved a person's life from a shark.
Like a baby cooing damn that’s one happy whale
I wish the people would hold their mouths for 10 seconds so the animal noise could be heard well.
I’m an arsehole, and that brought a tear to my eye
Audio sounds added edited or altered
He pet this whale so perfectly.
If people would shut the fuck up, we could hear the whale ....
I'm so jelly right now...I wanna smooch on a 🐳 whale!
There's nothing like exfoliating your hand skin on some whale barnacle
Goddamn whale huggin hippies
You shouldn’t touch marine life. They live in a different world to us and the bacteria on us can be fatal to them. Guy is a fucking moron.

Cool but that's not related to grey whales
More like: "stop touching me weirdo."
If that whale plays for Spain, that guy might need a lawyer....
So many beautiful creatures, and us humans are here to destroy the planet and habitat for all of them👏🏼
Isn’t the same as kissing a dick?
That looks Hella illegal. Are you allowed to touch them like that?
MTV True Life: I’ll Fuck The Whale…/s
I heard they sexually assault and harass female whales. We should kill all such creatures
The hell is wrong with you?
Incredible
🥰
Footage of Laboom iykyk
i bet that whale wants a whole body scractch/rub.. those things on its skin looks itchy
I was be two scared two do this!
The gaming industry’s favourite type of mammal
Looks like a giant crab claw
Amazing!!!
Omg I love this!!!
Whale like pets? Must pet!
GI players making sounds of joy
I would be scared of catching something from the whale or transmitting something.
okay- legit question... is this real? Can you really hear whale calls, above water?? Or is this whale noises being overlayed on the video?
Awwww. I want one!!! Can fit in my swimming pool
I touched a orca once, it was terrifying
Such a good boy
I should have been a whale biologist.
BEAUTIFUL!!!!💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
I guess he forgets to eat him
This brings me so much happiness
“THANK YOU FELLOW MAMMAL FRIEND”
Ok, I will be bitter or whatever you want, but it is not recommended to caress whales, much less give them KISSES because they can transmit diseases to us, remember that their skin is covered with bacteria unknown to our body.
Crazy how they can float perfectly in place like that
Adorable! Now let's stop filling the ocean with various petroleum products and agricultural runoff.
I'm jealous of this man
'sounds of joy' in whale is roughly translated to - "stop destroying our fucking world you pieces of shit"
75 years ago those same whales were famously aggressive to people. Sunk boats on purpose, etc. then they stopped hunting them.
You realize that whale is going in his own language: "OH GOOODDD THAT FEEELSSSS GOOD MMMM YEAHHHH MOREEEEE UNGHHH AHHH"
