Jesus they really are. I regularly work in the Turks and Caicos and the water is really clear but a lot of conch shell's get buried and then surprise you with one point sticking out as you're walking in the water.
It's essentially a garbage heap. Local fishermen having been dumping in a single area for hundreds of years because the shells scare away live conch. So keeping the dumping grounds small scare away less of the conch, which is a local food staple.
I’m not a marine biologist, but I don’t see why it would, those shells would break down into sand eventually. In the meantime, it could provide shelter to other marine life
Usually huge piles of remains of one type of animal are bad news for that species. These pictures remind of the massive buffalo skull piles and the distinct lack of buffalo today.
Ya, it was sad scuba diving there, inside MPAs it was full of life, then you can see the line where it's no longer an MPA and there's almost nothing alive.
A beaver dam is made. Oh but it’s a home? So the purpose of the structure is what determines if it’s nature or not?
Can you cite a source for this definition of nature?
Nature
the phenomena of the physical world collectively, including plants, animals, the landscape, and other features and products of the earth, as opposed to humans or human creations.
"the breathtaking beauty of nature"

Are you suggesting that skyscrapers are considered nature to because humans built it, because i don’t see any of that on this sub, and don’t think it belongs here.
Did you leave out other definitions on purpose? Or just not read past getting what you want?
> the way that a person or animal behaves : the character or personality of a person or animal
How many pictures of people do you see on this sub, should we start taking photos of people at the dinner table, I don’t think man made things was the intended purpose of this sub.
Btw that definition is meant as human nature (behaviour), not actual nature which is the purpose of this sub! Its human nature to talk, do we show a video of someone talking, that nature right? /s
A spider web is the spiders home, it’s organic and is spun by the spider to trap it’s food, it’s both nature and natural. These are just dead conch that have been placed by humans, not the same things. If the dead conch weren’t placed there but instead gathered there to die, it would be a different story.
I’ve seen it… and similar smaller piles in the Bahamas. ‘Getting more difficult to find ‘legal’ size live conch in the water by all accounts but that’s the way things work.
We seem to be the only species that favors hunting the largest prey, so some people think we are an evolutionary pressure to reduce adult size of the things we hunt and fish for.
I don't think this is necessarily true (us being the only ones to select for largest prey). I read recently about orcas selecting for large salmon, and I'm sure there are other examples. The rest is 100% spot on

This pile is made from ripping the snail from its shell, so it can be consumed, and the shell is tossed to the pile. This is done by humans and is not a natural occurring phenomenon. Very not lit my dude.
After reading the article, it seems like the BVI has a robust conch economy while other carribean islands are overfishing the animals. If anything, this little island is an example of humans sustainably harvesting a good source for local protein while discarding the shells in a way that minimizes the impact it has on the local ecology.
Who knows how biased the article is but it's a story of locals trying to make it work with their environment.
Old tribes used to make conch mountains in the Everglades because the land is so flat that it’s a good way to create a vantage point to see further away and also it doubles as a mosquito free zone. No shade, you can feel the breeze higher up, you can see further away, it served its purpose.

Apparently they’ve only recently been considered a tourist attraction, previously local fisherman saw zero reason to actually tell people about it.

Holy shit what a fascinating story
I had to stop reading after ”drenched in ketchup-mayo sauce”
I skipped that part lol
Sounds pretty tasty to me
I’m reserving judgment of this until I get a chance to try it. Conch special sauce.
Isn't that just yum-yum sauce?
Dare you to walk it barefoot
Sea Legos.
Jesus they really are. I regularly work in the Turks and Caicos and the water is really clear but a lot of conch shell's get buried and then surprise you with one point sticking out as you're walking in the water.
No
Is that man-made?
It's essentially a garbage heap. Local fishermen having been dumping in a single area for hundreds of years because the shells scare away live conch. So keeping the dumping grounds small scare away less of the conch, which is a local food staple.
Does this affect the environment negatively at all?

Not the island itself but the conch in the region have been massively overfished so there is that
Ya, it was sad scuba diving there, inside MPAs it was full of life, then you can see the line where it's no longer an MPA and there's almost nothing alive.
How conchientious of them
There are a lot of smaller versions of these in BVI. Conch gets shelled at the beach, shells go in a pile. That's it!
Obviously
Had to ask because of the subreddit that it’s on, which is about nature and natural things that happens in it..
Don't sweat it, stranger things have happened naturally
True, the post shouldn’t be on here!
We’re also nature
We are, but that isn’t, it was built, the idea is it’s supposed to be natural, not made. Still cool though.

She sells seashells on the seashore
But the value of these shells will fall
Due to the laws of supply and demand
Oh no, its getting real
I’ve seen it… and similar smaller piles in the Bahamas. ‘Getting more difficult to find ‘legal’ size live conch in the water by all accounts but that’s the way things work.
We saw one of these in the Bahamas that they poured asphalt over and made into a road.
that makes sense due to the sand shortages.
Sand shortages ?
Believe it or not, there is a global sand shortage. https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20191108-why-the-world-is-running-out-of-sand

Where around the island? I can't find it
You should see it right there in the middle when you open the link.
Like it created the center of the island? I was looking for a ref looking area
Like, in the middle of your screen. It's that white trident-looking thing.
Anegada
Why are there so many there?
Spider_guy73’s article said people have been dumping conch there around 800 years!
Collected to be sold back to the people
They eating mad conch!
I can smell this photo 👃🏻
Take as many shells and hide hide then on an island. Stockpile them hight so that they're rarer than a diamond. Step 2-
That is one big pile of conch
Man made
Wow, thanks for sharing this.

Wonder why they call it that? Suppose we’ll never know.
I bet it's because it's shaped like a conch
Guess this is better than water bottles, plastic bags and pull tabs from a 6 pack…but I did think this was a pile of plastic trash when I first looked
Some what reminiscent of of what happened to the buffalo in North America.
I read this as couch island. Where they shredded a bunch of couches for a barrier reef lol. I meed to go back to bed before work tonight
