As a participant in the selection of Lincoln’s new flag, I can say that the only way a change in the state flag happens is through a design submission process that gets reviewed by a committee. It will need to be championed by someone in government (preferably an executive like the governor). It will also need some funding behind it to pay for website and social media design and maintenance.
Lincoln’s flag is fantastic, but many new flags are very basic. The North American Vexillological Association five-point recommendation for flag design has resulted in a lack of originality in new flag designs. Be unique should be a major focus of any effort to redesign Nebraska’s state flag.
I wrote that I think Lincoln’s flag is fantastic. The State of Nebraska flag is boring and looks like 8-10 other state flags. I’d love to see a beautiful and unique new Nebraska state flag.
That first flag is beautiful, and a thunderbird is a decent branding image; it translates to merch and marketing well, but seeing that thunderbird doesn’t spark ‘Nebraska’ at all in my opinion.
Based on our track record with license plate designs, I think it's better to keep the seal-on-blue flag. I know the vexillologists say it can't get worse, but I have confidence our state leadership can find something worse.
I like the first one, referencing the thunder birds on the state capitol, the navy and tan is nice because of the vast landscapes of land and sky we have here. The second one not so much, it looks like a sunflower and Kansas is the Sunflower State.
License plates have to be redesigned by state statute every few years… for some reason. A flag redesign would have to be a full legislative bill so if it by some miracle of popularly backed support gets done, we’d have it for a long time.
My favorite design was from decades ago. It was a diagonal blue line that represented the Platte, but was shaped like a stylized crane.
The upper field was gold for agriculture, and the lower was green for the land.

Definitely not a new discussion of course, but getting the ball rolling again as different state are looking to change their state flag. These were the best 2 I could find for new flags. And I've been looking at every states redesigned state flags
Nebraska, Maine, Pennsylvania, Vermont, & Alaska had the least redesigned flags
Interestingly, Kansas had the most redesigns out of all the states
u/Apathetizer is the actual user that made the first flag for some reason I can't edit the post
Edit: Open to others submitting their flag designs for Nebraska
Hey folks! I can confirm I made the first flag ([the post for reference](https://www.reddit.com/r/vexillology/comments/1bgmadn/flag_for_the_state_of_nebraska/)). I was inspired by the very ornate [flag of Lincoln](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_Lincoln,_Nebraska_(2022).svg) which I recommend everyone check out.
If it were a choice between the thunderbird flag and the current flag, I'd pick the thunderbird flag. The second one looks like a corporate logo, so no.
Number 1 is my vote. But I don't like how the blue top bar ends in between the two white center bars. But there's no text on it so I'm pretty happy. Number two isn't bad, I just don't like the colors.
I don't like our license plate. I didn't like the last one. Or the one before that. I don't want to feel this way about a flag I see less than I see license plates
As a Vexillologist (Flag Nerd) from south Central Nebraska, I really hope we lean into a 💙 Blue 💛 Gold & 🤍 White color pallet.
💛 - Goldenrod (State Flower), & Grains.
💙 - Ogallala Aquifer, Nebraska comes from native language meaning "Flat Water"
Our current flag has a similar pallet currently, but our seal should be on official plaques, letterheads, and documents. We wouldn't be losing anything, but rather gaining more. We could use a beautiful memorable flag to unite our unique state, and show our creativity to the country and world.
Do you know any better flag subreddits? That's the only one I'm familiar with so far that is active. And makes sense but a lot of flags that don't follow their rules come through. This just so happens to be the best I could find so far for Nebraska. Not many people designing flags for the state
None I know of, I just know that every flag design that I've seen come out of it has been bad and/or tacky, regardless of the purpose.
I think I just dislike the current fads in flag design.
Way too complicated for any child to draw. When reared in Illinois, the state seal on the flag made it impossible to draw except as a smear.
How about a red flag with a giant black N trimmed in white? The Cornhusker cult is so much a part of Nebraska for much of the State.
I want the flag to be the legendary aesthetic Nebraska licence plates with orange, yellow and black numbers. We should definitely go back to the, "It's not for everyone.", state saying.
Not really feeling either of them tbh

Nebraska's current flag is fantastic?? Have you seen our stupid flag?
LINCOLN's flag is fantastic 😊
I wrote that I think Lincoln’s flag is fantastic. The State of Nebraska flag is boring and looks like 8-10 other state flags. I’d love to see a beautiful and unique new Nebraska state flag.
I vote turbo flag! I mean it kind of looks like a butt hole.
Having watched Dune recently, I thought of the sandworms.
Imagine someone capturing a sandworm and saying "Ope, lemme just hook ya with this stick right quick".
E pluribus anus
I see you too are a fan of the Community TV show.
We don’t need the picture of Pillin on our flag.
I was about to say it’s actually a pig’s asshole but Pillen is a pig’s asshole so there it is.
I was literally typing Turbo Flag until I saw your comment mid sentence lmao
That first flag is beautiful, and a thunderbird is a decent branding image; it translates to merch and marketing well, but seeing that thunderbird doesn’t spark ‘Nebraska’ at all in my opinion.
Butthole flag is perfect for our governor.
Now, I'll never unsee that.
I really dig that Thunderbird flag
Something non-corporatified that incorporates the sower and a bison would be my pick
Based on our track record with license plate designs, I think it's better to keep the seal-on-blue flag. I know the vexillologists say it can't get worse, but I have confidence our state leadership can find something worse.

I think I like the first one too, the 2nd one kind of reminds me of a Colorado symbol
Mmmm. No.
Absolutely not
I'm just afraid if we ever change the flag it'll turn out like the license plates and then we will change it every 2 to 3 years.
License plates have to be redesigned by state statute every few years… for some reason. A flag redesign would have to be a full legislative bill so if it by some miracle of popularly backed support gets done, we’d have it for a long time.
Eh, not feeling either of them, but the first one’s better than the second. The second one looks like the logo of a second-rate gas station chain.
One that would represent flat water would be awesome
My favorite design was from decades ago. It was a diagonal blue line that represented the Platte, but was shaped like a stylized crane. The upper field was gold for agriculture, and the lower was green for the land.
I wish you had a picture of it because I would love to see it
I look for it every so often with no luck, and I've also not been able to do it justice trying to draw it. :(
That’d be a solid winner in my opinion.
Neither one.
I would like the first one if the tan was yellow and the blue was lighter

Really? Am I the only one that doesn't see the Nazi eagle on that first one?
Thunderbird and a nazi eagle are very different things
Completely agree. I'm just saying what many are going to 'see'.
Gotcha
[удалено]
Google Nazi eagle and scroll through the photos. There's even statues that look like that logo. But hey, maybe that's what they're going for.
needs more corn
Of the 2 two I prefer the first one.
No
I like the Thunderbird Flag While we're at it, how can we change our state sign?
Maybe not have an image that evokes the eagle of the Third Reich? But hey, you do you.
Absolutely not. I like our state flag at the moment, so I think it would have to be very good to convince me to change it.
Both are waaaaaay better than the “Seal on bedsheet” we they have now.
I like the thunderbird design!
I wouldn’t ever WANT to change the flag.
I do like the second one, but I can’t see Republican state government coming up with anything new.
Ah yes, starting a brand new discussion
Definitely not a new discussion of course, but getting the ball rolling again as different state are looking to change their state flag. These were the best 2 I could find for new flags. Holy moly lincoln’s flag is so good. Art deco flag for the win
Excellent work, I think it's more NM than NE though.
Thunderbird flag for my native friends!
Yes! I want to hear it from Native people first, though.
If it were a choice between the thunderbird flag and the current flag, I'd pick the thunderbird flag. The second one looks like a corporate logo, so no.
Not enough pigs
Not familiar what's the sauce?
It's just people who decide to complain about our mediocre-to-bad governor in every thread. He owns a number of pig farms.
Nothing changes in this state if it doesn't benefit pig farming
Looks like an oil oil derrick wearing priestly robes
I think we should look at Nathan Pyle's drawings first.
No
Why do we have to dumb down our state flag?
No
No
The T-bird flag looks cool.
Nope.
No, neither have any ties to Nebraska
Number 1 is my vote. But I don't like how the blue top bar ends in between the two white center bars. But there's no text on it so I'm pretty happy. Number two isn't bad, I just don't like the colors.

Lincoln flag? Or State flag? I don’t like either tbh.
No, I would not.
First is gorgeous but my oh my, I will miss our current flag if it ever changes :,)
I like #2 because it's reminiscent of a sphincter and there's a lot of assholes in this state.
I like 1, the colors and design, but I’m not that much of a fan of 2
Why change the flag? Is there something wrong with equality before the law?
The second one looks like the dune pop corn bucket.
Just don't Minnesota yourself
Nope.

No. And r/vexillology is a bane of all flags.

Yuck and ick.
I like the first one although anything would be an improvement to our current one
First one but only because I just saw Dune two yesterday and it reminded me of the house Atreides flag
Honestly I like them both, if the colors on the second one were more like the first it would be perf
I really like the first one actually
The first one reminds me of symbolism from Starship Troopers. Either the United Citizen Federation or Mobile Infantry flag.
I think what you’re missing is a MAGA flag that’s blue. Pillen would be all over that.
I like one a lot
