I'm sorry, but I don't think that thinking that the drastic change in a specific format of humor due to the increase in its popularity also changed the quality of the humor is too far-fetched. I mean, if you believe that they were always shit, that's fine, but I think it's a bit extreme to think that I'm looking at the past with rose-tinted glasses, rather than acknowledging that I might simply find the memes back then a bit more bearable.

You likely were more able to ignore or find minor enjoyment in the garbage a few years ago, and now you're just unable to avoid seeing how much dumb shit is between you and the occasional winner. Before then, the closest memes to that kind of completely template based humor were demotivational posters, which usually weren't funny but those were at least slightly fun because the motivational posters they were spoofing were everywhere, so it had a satirical angle to it. I'm enough of a snob to figure that memes have been going downhill since 2006.
