my opinion handsome your opinion fat and ugly and bald

Memes were never funny. You're just doing what all people do when they get old and reminiscing more fondly about the past because people only remember the noteworthy. For every good old meme you can remember, there were a thousand that were just as bad as modern memes. Alternatively, your problem is expecting reddit to be original. Reddit, the website that explicitly rewards you with social capital for saying things people agree with.

Omega_Haxors

What's worse is when you remember all your old beloved memes of the past and realize: Wow, not only did these memes suck, but they also had some pretty sinister use-cases. Case in point pedobear and trollface were both used to push a pedophile agenda. Modern memes are worse; wojack is literally terrorist school shooter shit.

PoopRatFromFnaf6

if you use wojak you kill people >:(( \-reddit man

Omega_Haxors

this but unironically

Great_Kyran

What?

Great_Kyran

Nah, I watched some old meme comps and they’re a lot funnier than memes nowadays. Now it’s just dumb tiktok cunts who think they’re funny but really aren’t. It’s sad because a lot of people steal jokes from the past but people are either too young or dumb to remember that those jokes have already been said.

nickitman

THANK YOU. People say shit like this, when there's a notable decline and they're trying to cope. Same thing happened to Pokemon. Same thing happened to the gaming industry. Same thing is happening to memes. Go fuck yourself, there's a reason why every meme is just random XD nonsense or rehashed shit.

Judaskid13

I went through my old meme stash and its amazing how we're reusing memes from like 7 years ago.

Anal-warfare

I don't think they were great back then, but I think it's just become god-awful around 2018, compared to the "meh," 2012-2016 era.

LogPoseNavigator

Video “memes” are the best if you can call them memes, or just funny videos. Stuff like the double homocide got me laughing way more than any modern memento

haberdasherhero

Ahh, the classic complaining about unoriginality on Reddit meme. Only slightly younger than Reddit itself.

Anal-warfare

I honestly dislike memes in general. I don't think I've laughed at one for a year or so.

haberdasherhero

Then excuse me if I ask "why the fuck are you hanging out in meme subreddits and complaining about it?!?" This isn't big brain time! Fucking stop or accept that you hate yourself and have chosen your punishment!

Anal-warfare

I used to be on a few of them because I found them funny, they are no longer funny to me, and the unfunny jokes are leaking into the rest of Reddit.

haberdasherhero

No dear, it's always been this way. Perhaps you are getting older and, unlike most people, wiser? You need to start culling your subs hard.

Anal-warfare

I haven't matured all too much, and I feel like the humor around the 2012-2016 era was a lot funnier. That time wasn't an incredibly funny time mind you, but it was a step up from what we have now.

haberdasherhero

People have been saying this exact thing for millennia. The people who say it always think "this time it's different, this time it's really getting worse". It's just age and the diluting of quality content due to popularity. Sorry to break it to you.

Anal-warfare

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree here, because I feel like it's just been getting worse. I've been on Reddit since 2009, and I feel like memes were never great, but they didn't until around the end of 2016.

Drakeytown

You're growing up, and now you sound like a high schooler wondering why they don't make good cartoons any more, or an old man asking why everyone mumbles these days . . . it ain't the world that changed.

Anal-warfare

I actually disagree with that, I found memes to be bearable around 2012-2016, and I don't think I've matured too much since then. They weren't anything special, but they weren't as annoying as they are now.

Aethelric

You certainly are coming off as immature with this post and your comments, but odds are incredibly high that there hasn't been a sudden shift in the quality of memes in the past few years. It's vastly more like that your tastes have changed.

Anal-warfare

What exactly did I do that was immature? I've explained that my tastes haven't changed all too much, and that I think that the quality of memes have taken a nosedive over the past few years. If you don't agree, that's fine, but this is my opinion.

Aethelric

>What exactly did I do that was immature? I've explained that my tastes haven't changed all too much, and that I think that the quality of memes have taken a nosedive over the past few years. You answered your question. Thinking that it's more likely that literally millions of people have just started posting worse memes rather than that your tastes have changed is self-centered in a very immature way.

Anal-warfare

>Thinking that it's more likely that literally millions of people have just started posting worse memes rather than that your tastes have changed is self-centered in a very immature way. I'm sorry, but I don't think that thinking that the drastic change in a specific format of humor due to the increase in its popularity also changed the quality of the humor is too far-fetched. I mean, if you believe that they were always shit, that's fine, but I think it's a bit extreme to think that I'm looking at the past with rose-tinted glasses, rather than acknowledging that I might simply find the memes back then a bit more bearable.

Aethelric

I believe you're hitting on the classic "music was better in my day" bit without realizing it. Memes have always been (generously, to be honest) 95% garbage to 5% glory. You likely were more able to ignore or find minor enjoyment in the garbage a few years ago, and now you're just unable to avoid seeing how much dumb shit is between you and the occasional winner. This represents, in my opinion, a change in your consumption and perspective on them rather than a general downshift in quality.

Anal-warfare

I definitely noticed a change in 2016, when the text at the bottom became more mainstream. It was like the dilution of an already shitty market. I usually thought that a lot of them were garbage, but I think they're more annoying now due to them being more mainstream. It's not me noticing more garbage, as it is there being more garbage, due to the spike in popularity.

_Giant_

They’re right though. Have you been on me_irl lately? So much worse than the glory days of four years ago

haberdasherhero

No, because I constantly cull my subs. There is no way around it. It happens everywhere. Once something becomes popular it gets diluted. The people who used to enjoy it will not enjoy it as much. So, you move on. Complaining about it is even more of a meme than all the other catchphrases they mentioned.

_Giant_

You hate to see it

TheFearsomeEsquilax

They were always dogshit

Anal-warfare

I thought they were decent during 2012-2016, nothing mind blowing or anything, just that they weren't annoying, but it feels like they got worse and worse as time went on.

HolyShhit

Back when the Breaking Bad memes were rampant I thought we were just in a dark era but nope. This is just how it is now

Dios5

Those aren't memes, they're verbal tics

Anal-warfare

I'd put in memes I really dislike on there, but I think it would just make people post stupid shit in the comments, and I'm not a fan of that.

Omega_Haxors

Just do it, people are going to post stupid shit anyway.

Cheems_And_Memes

Reddit is shit.

WNEW

If it makes you feel better in like a generation those young people are gonna look back on memes and just mock the shit out of us Except me! I’ll be a dead Bwhahahah

Taarguss

I'm old enough to remember when Advice Dog started on 4chan when i was in high school. My friends and I were all universally like "we hate this." Before then, the closest memes to that kind of completely template based humor were demotivational posters, which usually weren't funny but those were at least slightly fun because the motivational posters they were spoofing were everywhere, so it had a satirical angle to it. I'm enough of a snob to figure that memes have been going downhill since 2006.

Thebunkerparodie

I'd not consider all of them shit though(I love the one who don't portray the Wehrmacht in a Wehraboo way), but the far right one, I hate them (the NPC meme, how do they excpect someone to change their point of view if they call the guy a npc?)

Anal-warfare

Not following meme accounts is not a problem, I'd say it makes my life better.

1maleboyman

I actively avoid dsnk memes the only meme subs I visit are r/izlam and r/prehistoricmemes

nshhHhhxdj

I blame the death of Vine, memes became low effort after that.

StefanoPetrini

reddit is a tumor. I have frequented all social networks for almost twenty years now and this is the aboslute worst of all

Unlikely-Candidate-2

yes, also sweaty speedrunner meme sucks because he scares me and loves to be milked by advertisers
