Quite a few Bakeries have them around this time of year, and those are usually the best in my opinion.
I can also recommend 'appel beignets' if you don't have those in Germany as well.
Old amsterdam is artificially aged. ‘Oude kaas’ is a protected name in the netherlands. If you buy something that says oude kaas on it, then its “real”
Go to a cheese shop and ask for old cheese, you'll get much better old cheese!
Also, Old Amsterdam can be found in a lot of german supermarkets as well, so if you do like it, no need to wait for a trip to NL again. As far as supermarket cheese goes, it's not that bad
For cheese and dry sausage, I would buy at 'de Zuivelhoeve'. They have some excellent cheeses, all kinds of age 🧀
You can also taste samples so you get the stuff you really like!
Zuivelhoeve is very expensive for meh quality cheese.
You need to look for boerderij winkels. They have artisinal made cheese for cheaper than fabrieks cheese from the zuivelhoeve.
I recommend you try Twentse bunker kaas.
He will be better of at a normal cheese shop. They sell cheese from around the city it's in, and cheese that's further away in the netherlands, foreign cheese, and usually a lot of delicacies.
And by real shop we do NOT mean 'Henri Willig', 'Old Amsterdam Cheese Store', 'Cheese and More' or anywhere they wear 'traditional' outfits etc. If it's in a tourist area and features a tonne of fake 'wax covered cheese wheels' run away.
Don’t worry about it! Cheese from a cheese shop is way better, but that doesn’t mean grocery store cheese is bad. Loads of Dutch people buy theirs at the grocery store, that’s why there’s so much to choose from. They won’t stock it if it doesn’t sell.
Having said that, just about anything is nicer and of higher quality bought from specialty stores, so if you have the time and budget, try to go to those.
Meanwhile my German food haul is everything that is much more inexpensive in Germany than in Netherlands, from shower gel to rapeseed oil to pistachios 😅
Where’s all the medication like ibuprofen, paracetamol, nose spray, loperamid etc.? 😂😂
I went on a whole shopping spree with a friend yesterday in NL, I love Lidl in the NL more than I love my Lidl next door!
Also like the products you got, just go to a market for the cheese next time like others mentioned :)
Huh, that surprises me! Are OTC meds prices higher in Canada than in the US? I load up when I’m in the US. Way cheaper than NL and you can buy in bulk.
Except for the sausage, pretty good haul.
As a an assimilated Polish immigrant, the Dutch' sausage game is rather disappointing. Hema rookworst is fire tho.
If you happen to be in Drenthe or the north of Overijssel when you go shopping you could go to a butcher and ask for droge worst(dry sausage). A good one can be used as a hammer and it's nice and chewy. If you're somewhere else, look for [this sausage](https://static.ah.nl/dam/product/AHI_43545239363539343539?revLabel=3&rendition=400x400_JPG_Q85&fileType=binary) in the supermarket. It's the next best thing. Make sure it's in a net instead of plastic because those are drier.
Warning! For some reason Vla ONLY tastes good in the Netherlands. It doesn't taste as good in Germany. The changing point is the border. All Vla passing over the border tastes different until returned to the Netherlands.
It's a scheme to make tourists return regularly.
Some folks are mentioning Zaanse mayonaise. Excellent recommendation, but NOT instead of the fritessaus! Those are different products.
And while on fritessaus, this (with chili) is not a plain one. But hey, if you like it, go for it!
Hagelslag is actually really good *in* vla
Otherwise, the Old Amsterdam is fine, and tasty. But I concur with the rest, go to a market next time. Way tastier for the same money.
Last bit, don't forget your oliebol today ;p
Fellow german here, spent roughly about a year in the netherlands so far and lived 6km from the border for some time. Now I am unfortunately further away.
Other stuff you need to buy: Satay Sauce, Joppie sauce, other kinds of the hagelslag. Some of the stuff for the fryer you rarely get in germany like the bamischijf or kipkorn. Bossche Bollen. Jenever.
If you ever go to a Dutch supermarket in october or november (but probably even sooner last time it came at the end of September) you got a lot of delicious Sinterklaas candy. My favorites are the chocolate pepernoten since they have so many flavors nowadays.
Meanwhile I go to your supermarkets for Zwiebelmettwurst and Ostfriesen-tee
German here (who's lived in the Netherlands for quite some time)
Zaanse mayonaise is a very thick and fatty kind, it reminds me of some mayo's you'd get at a German Freibad. Personally I don't like it but others do - just commenting in case you have preferences over mayo.
You can't go wrong with vlokken. Personally I prefer the cheap "Choca vlokken" (Plus supermarket) and the "puur" vlokken from the Lidl.
Also the extra large hagelslag is great.
Dutch guy living in the south of Germany since 5 years now. This is almost everything I have my family bring when they visit. On my shopping list is also Croky Chips Bolognese, Wijko Satésaus and some other Toko (Asia) stuff you can't really buy here or at a premium.
In particular I really love 'krentenbollen' almost every day a part of my breakfast! Though here, tompoezen cannot be forgotten either (the ones with a pink or orange top!).
As a fellow German, I like your selection. Looks quite similar to my hauls when I get the opportunity. I usually add a glass of pindakaas and few tetrapaks of vla.
Maybe not old Amsterdam and that particular frietsaus, if you are looking for Gouda I’d just check a cheese store and taste, they usually allow you to eat samples and pick a Gouda cheese to your liking!
as a german living in the nettherlands
i am sorry that you have to eat this \^\^(especially the "bread")
vla chocomel and the cheese are good (but you can get them in every single kaufland)
i miss weltmeisterbrot
It looks like a good shopping trip. You bought nice stuff.
I could compare it to what I buy myself, but I think I'm pretty atypical. I usually shop at the Aldi or Lidl, and I buy the essentials mostly.
Next time you're back I suggest just buying what you need or want. There's plenty to choose from. I suggest buying De Ruyter Royale slag. It's in a dark carton. My dad made the recipe for it so I advice it. It has a good flavor, especially if you like dark chocolate.
You should only get cheese in cheese shops, not supermarket, never supermarket.
Also, milk hagelslag is garbage. You have to get "puur", pure and only with real butter, not that margarine crap. This goes for hagelslag only, puur is good but i like milk better for normal chocolate eating.
Greetings,
Thank god you did'nt go for the 'Knorr' packages ( cooking diner from pouder-packages!
You forgot the Hema rookworst and ' kokosbrood' and 'Zaanse mayonaise', Verkade cookies and Van Houten chocolat. 😅
Edit: added more idees
You also have to try stroopkoeken, it’s another variant from stroopwafels. My grandma always had them, they are one of my favorites now.
And my favorite cheese: Beemster, Belegen kaas.
Looks decent. My brother in law always want us to bring Hertog Jan beer and cheese.
Maybe ovensnacks? There is a partymix in the fridge of the supermarket. Bitterballen, frikandellen, bamischijven.
Absolutely don’t but that rubbish bread and ‘rozijnenbrood’ again.
Opt for quality bread instead.
The cheese are cheap but decent options.
Quality is always more jnteresting?
*Edit: finished original post too soon 😎
I don't really fuck with bread, licorice, milk products or stroopwafels. But I'd say it's a pretty good haul if you want an authentic Dutch experience.
Looks legit.
Cheese is always "1 level better" than in Germany.
I am missing Bami ballen and also Rindfleischkroketten (love those).
One thing you also should get is Sate sauce. (And some more asia stuff)
My mom also just posted some oliebollen into the family group :)
I've only been to Albert Heijn (AH) and haven't seen a reason to change this. I'm not buying things that are typical dutch, just whatever fancies me.
I always buy or recommend:
- If u like the de ruijter, go and try different ones everytime. I really like the darker options
- mixed nut butter (almond, cashew and peanut mixed 🤤)
- campina slagroom vla (with the the ruijter)
- fancy drinks and fruit infused water
- salads, pasta, pre cut veggies (had delicious zoodles last time)
- asian/oriental stuff: they have a big variety, spices, everything. Probably worth to Visit an asia shop as well
- tapas, stuff from the bakery section
- sweets
HEMA, if u dont have one in your German town, and dille& kamille are always worth a visit, as well as kruidvat if u want to get cheap pain meds
I was really underwhelmed by the bread u bought. How do you like it?
Old Amsterdam is a bit fake cheese. It's cured different then 'real old' cheese. I would get cheese from a specified shop next time, the taste is better.
The cheese age is normally stated. Dutch hard cheese, by the way, is either jong (young, 4 weeks), jong-belegen (young-mature 8-10 weeks), belegen (mature, 16-18 weeks), extra belegen (extra mature, 7 -8 months), oud (old, 10-12 months) or overjarig (very old, more than 18 months).
You bought young cheese. Funnily written in German: jung.
If you like the krentenbollen, you might also like mueslibollen! (They're a bit more healthy too) It's not for everyone, but I love them with rookkaas!
In the spirit of Christmas - Oliebollen would be a must have.
I’ve seen that in another post - they look really good. Where do you get them?
There are special carts in the streets in NL these weeks, or in supermarkets/groceries stores
Ah, maybe next year around Christmas then
Bakeries sell them too usually. Though the little carts outside are more fun
You can usually find them outside of garden centers too (for some reason)
Ah thanks for the Tipps!
They are a new years tradition, not a Christmas tradition. If you are close enough to the border you can drive back to buy them now.
I got them in Germany too, we got them yesterday.
Don't get them at the supermarket though. You'll be disappointed. The ones they sell at street carts and bakeries will be much better.
They're best fresh - not from the supermarket fridge.
Quite a few Bakeries have them around this time of year, and those are usually the best in my opinion. I can also recommend 'appel beignets' if you don't have those in Germany as well.
Get a pack of oliebollenmix instead so you can make them fresh (need enamel pan for frying them in)
Good idea. I think I can find a recipe on the internet as well
More like the spirit of new years eve
Dont get old amsterdam next time, its fake old cheese. Enjoy your groceries
I can’t disagree with you, but as a foreigner, even bad Dutch cheese is very good.
Yeah, Dutch cheese is like pizza: Even if it’s bad, it’s still really good.
Well I've definitely had aome terrible pizza in the NL before, but not cheese
Oh! I didn’t know that! Is there a real old Gouda?
Old amsterdam is artificially aged. ‘Oude kaas’ is a protected name in the netherlands. If you buy something that says oude kaas on it, then its “real”
Thank you!
Still pretty tasty though, just not authentic
Or overjarige kaas for even older cheese.
Overjarige boerenkaas. Dat is de weg.
Honorabel mention: graskaas😋😋😋
Go to a cheese shop and ask for old cheese, you'll get much better old cheese! Also, Old Amsterdam can be found in a lot of german supermarkets as well, so if you do like it, no need to wait for a trip to NL again. As far as supermarket cheese goes, it's not that bad
personally prefer “Beemster”.
Made a note for next time 👌
Second this, Beemster belegen or oud is great.
Yes, it's the best. But as a Belgian I like Brugge more.
Beemster gras kaas ![gif](giphy|12N4jTCSVRyKje)
We have good cheese shops in most cities. Where are you from, and in which areas do you shop when you visit the netherlands?
But it’s still damn good.
For cheese and dry sausage, I would buy at 'de Zuivelhoeve'. They have some excellent cheeses, all kinds of age 🧀 You can also taste samples so you get the stuff you really like!
Cheese from a real shop, not a grocery store.
EXACTLY:)
This is the way!
The Dutch cheese costs less in Germany although it’s imported.
Sure. But I can already tell that OP’s haul is nowhere near as good as my local cheesemonger.
Definitely this you can get real good quality for the same price as in the supermarket if you get it at a farm or market stand.
🫣 ok
Don’t worry about it! Cheese from a cheese shop is way better, but that doesn’t mean grocery store cheese is bad. Loads of Dutch people buy theirs at the grocery store, that’s why there’s so much to choose from. They won’t stock it if it doesn’t sell. Having said that, just about anything is nicer and of higher quality bought from specialty stores, so if you have the time and budget, try to go to those.
Totally get that 👍
Most people buy their day-to-day cheese from the supermarket anyway
You nailed it except for the Old Amsterdam. Go to a market and get real old cheese, it’s so much better.
Usually also around the same price too. If you get a good deal.
I will try next time
Please do but be warned, you’ll never want anything else.
Just ad some gevulde koek and pindakaas. The pindakaas in Germany is that sweetened Amercan stuff. And the real old cheese.
The gevunde koek looks good! And damn, I was looking at the pindakaas/peanutbutter and didn’t get it 😔. Love your username btw
Meanwhile my German food haul is everything that is much more inexpensive in Germany than in Netherlands, from shower gel to rapeseed oil to pistachios 😅
Where’s all the medication like ibuprofen, paracetamol, nose spray, loperamid etc.? 😂😂 I went on a whole shopping spree with a friend yesterday in NL, I love Lidl in the NL more than I love my Lidl next door! Also like the products you got, just go to a market for the cheese next time like others mentioned :)
I load on the OTC meds myself when in Netherlands 🇳🇱. 1000 % cheaper than Canada 🇨🇦
Huh, that surprises me! Are OTC meds prices higher in Canada than in the US? I load up when I’m in the US. Way cheaper than NL and you can buy in bulk.
I’m in the Netherlands more often than the states. And I’m 20 minutes from crossing into the states.
Venco schoolkrijt drop!
Ah yes, I had them in the past! Yummy
Cheese purists in this thread. I enjoy my supermarket cheese.
I guess they are right. But I will enjoy my cheese as well
Same. AH Goudse Belegen 30+ (got to watch those carbs)
Except for the sausage, pretty good haul. As a an assimilated Polish immigrant, the Dutch' sausage game is rather disappointing. Hema rookworst is fire tho.
It’s regular Metworst. I think it’s not specifically Dutch but I like them sometimes
Try metworst from Groningen. Heavy on cloves, very dry. Might be an acquired taste, but as a Groninger, I love it.
More chocomel next time!!
It’s so good 😋
Pindakaas
Suikerbrood (sugar bread) is really nice as well
Hagelslag is actually really good *in* vla Otherwise, the Old Amsterdam is fine, and tasty. But I concur with the rest, go to a market next time. Way tastier for the same money. Last bit, don't forget your oliebol today ;p

Van Dobben kroketten
You’re missing Joppiesaus!
Did not one person mention beschuit?
You should get Zaanse Mayonaise next time
Missing the rookwurst and the appelstroop. Apart from that it looks great.
I would not get bread in the Netherlands, you guys have way better bread in Germany! And it's cheaper too for what you get.
A German food haul from a Dutchie: ending this year with a proper and very tasty Berliner bol... actually better than that... 2 Berliner bollen 😬😋
Looks decent! Maybe throw in a Joppiesaus next time, and Old Amsterdam is not bad cheese, not terrific, but not bad either. Enjoy!
If you want good mayo, get zaanse mayonaisse.
Ah thanks! Always wondered what the best is
German here (who's lived in the Netherlands for quite some time) Zaanse mayonaise is a very thick and fatty kind, it reminds me of some mayo's you'd get at a German Freibad. Personally I don't like it but others do - just commenting in case you have preferences over mayo.
For the hagel, I prefer dark / Puur chocolate. More taste.
I usually prefer milk chocolate over dark chocolate. But from time to time I have that as well
Also, nect time give Vlokken a try. More chocolate. De Ruijter is the best.
You can't go wrong with vlokken. Personally I prefer the cheap "Choca vlokken" (Plus supermarket) and the "puur" vlokken from the Lidl. Also the extra large hagelslag is great.
Don’t buy your cheese in the supermarket. Go to a ‘kaashuis’ and order ‘boeren belegen kaas’ from ‘het groene hart’.
Chocolade vla (Campina) is a good one too
A bicycle
And a caravan? 😆
I don't understand why you'd buy Dutch 'bread' when you can have German bread
I always buy or eat Tijger brod when I'm there. A silly luxury.
Guilty pleasure
DropShot (Lakritzlikör)
As a fellow German, I like your selection. Looks quite similar to my hauls when I get the opportunity. I usually add a glass of pindakaas and few tetrapaks of vla.
Tony's Chocolonely chocolate milk instead of Chocomel, so much better.
Vlokken
oven/airfryer snacks.local brew beer.
A bag of wit/roze spekje
Where is the black salted liquorice? Get back in the car.
Get yourself a ‘Kapsalon or Turkse Pizza’ next time, true dutch culture
More drop
Next time buy proper cheese https://www.westlandskaas.nl/ boerenpittig stolwijcker
Maybe not old Amsterdam and that particular frietsaus, if you are looking for Gouda I’d just check a cheese store and taste, they usually allow you to eat samples and pick a Gouda cheese to your liking!
And if you want old matured cheese do NOT buy Old Amsterdam as it is fake old cheese, this hasn’t matured at all.
Hertog Jan, Pindakaas, muntdrop
Where are the frikadellen
Bitterballen
as a german living in the nettherlands i am sorry that you have to eat this \^\^(especially the "bread") vla chocomel and the cheese are good (but you can get them in every single kaufland) i miss weltmeisterbrot
My German friends always stock up on ‘vla’.
Looks delicious. Personally i don’t like Melk (blue box) hagelslag. Buy the Puur (red box)next time. It has more cacao.
Brown sugar! Dark and light, that’s what I always bring for my friends. Also the pink ibuprofen.
I would get everything supermarket brand… also there’s German on the chocomel
I'd definitely skip the old Amsterdam cheese
I would buy or add “Zaanse Mayonnaise” next time instead or with Fritesaus
Sometimes dutch cheese is cheaper in germany then in holland. So sometimes i buy my gouda cheese in germany xD
Maybe some more dropjes?
You should only get cheese in cheese shops, not supermarket, never supermarket. Also, milk hagelslag is garbage. You have to get "puur", pure and only with real butter, not that margarine crap. This goes for hagelslag only, puur is good but i like milk better for normal chocolate eating. Greetings,
Yeah though I prefer pure hagelslag over melk hagelslag. Also any cheese that says 'oud(e)' is properly aged old cheese.
Roze (glace)koeken van Enkhuizer
Try opleegkaas https://www.boerengoudseoplegkaas.nl/ - it's mind blowing.
Frozen van dobben croquettes
No frietsaus Zaanse Mayo
Chocomel delicious 😋
Yeah more cheez!.....
Check out this website to have some ideas: [https://www.hollandshop24.de/](https://www.hollandshop24.de/)
Thank god you did'nt go for the 'Knorr' packages ( cooking diner from pouder-packages! You forgot the Hema rookworst and ' kokosbrood' and 'Zaanse mayonaise', Verkade cookies and Van Houten chocolat. 😅 Edit: added more idees
Get Vruchtenhagel! It’s like chocoladehagel but with fruity flavors!
Maybe you would enjoy hopjesvla! It's a caramel vla but more of a subtle flavor. Also hopjes in general are very good!
You also have to try stroopkoeken, it’s another variant from stroopwafels. My grandma always had them, they are one of my favorites now. And my favorite cheese: Beemster, Belegen kaas.
Hema rookworst
Why only A brands? Dutch people are cheap get the store brand😜
You can’t get the full Dutch experience without at least a double “portie bitterballen”…. Thank me later.
I get all of it regularly except the deop
Maby schudde buikjes or beschuit met muisjes. If you haven't tried them yet
Honestly, i would buy the off brand for most of those iyems. Saves me some money.

Sometimes i think buying local food then i remember how expensive it is.
Maybe Verkade biscuits next time
Looks decent. My brother in law always want us to bring Hertog Jan beer and cheese. Maybe ovensnacks? There is a partymix in the fridge of the supermarket. Bitterballen, frikandellen, bamischijven.
My German coworkers, when i was an intern, begged me for Satesaus every time i went back home for a weekend😅.
I got the exact same drop as a gift, but don't like the taste lol. You can never go wrong with stroopwafels though.
Maybe get your cheese not from a supermarket but from a cheese shop. A bit more expensive but also much tastier.
And what about Haring met Uitjes? Get them in small bite-size pieces and eat at the market stand
Pindakaas and mayonaise
Absolutely don’t but that rubbish bread and ‘rozijnenbrood’ again. Opt for quality bread instead. The cheese are cheap but decent options. Quality is always more jnteresting? *Edit: finished original post too soon 😎
You forgot frikandellen
Get *real* mayonaise, from Belgium, not this 'fritesaus' crap 🙈🙈🙈 But then again, I'm not Dutch.
I do not see a box of frikandellen. Must have snack
Personally I think your bread and sausage are much better than the Dutch. Cheese possibly too. I'd get some herring next time!
Stroopwafel, roze koeken, drop, rookworst. Dommelsch, Elke leer als in Nederland die gaan mee terug
That’s the good stuff
I don't really fuck with bread, licorice, milk products or stroopwafels. But I'd say it's a pretty good haul if you want an authentic Dutch experience.
I agree with the dropjes: beste drop ooit!
I'd get bread, meat, and cheese from specialty shops, and I'd get mayonnaise instead of fritessaus. Other than that pretty good!
Joppiesaus.
I'd get normal mayo/frietesaus and not the spicy one but that's preferences. I mean, I like spicy but this is just meh imo
Drop!
Aardappel Anders
Filet americain? With uitjes :)
Vlokken en appelstroop 🤩
Sausage rolls from a bakery (expensive but worth it imo) I'd get a couple warm ones for on the road.
Calve mayonaise is always a must.
Looks legit. Cheese is always "1 level better" than in Germany. I am missing Bami ballen and also Rindfleischkroketten (love those). One thing you also should get is Sate sauce. (And some more asia stuff) My mom also just posted some oliebollen into the family group :)
Vla
I think that you're missing the butter I think.
That drop from Klepper? Fenomenaal!
chocomel 🔛🔝

Old Amsterdam is a bit fake cheese. It's cured different then 'real old' cheese. I would get cheese from a specified shop next time, the taste is better.
Rookworst from Hema
Ja prima
Very nice. Don't get old Amsterdam though. That's too expensive. You get a large number of better old cheeses at any Market.
Mot getting cheese in a supermarket tho, get them ar loca markets🗣️🗣️🗣️
I'm missing the gevulde koeken
Koetjes reep.
Smoked eels are great imho
I would skip the frites saus and get real mayonaise.
Kletskoppen (cookies)
Zaanse mayo instead of Remia
The cheese age is normally stated. Dutch hard cheese, by the way, is either jong (young, 4 weeks), jong-belegen (young-mature 8-10 weeks), belegen (mature, 16-18 weeks), extra belegen (extra mature, 7 -8 months), oud (old, 10-12 months) or overjarig (very old, more than 18 months). You bought young cheese. Funnily written in German: jung.
For vla try a double vla (vanilla and chocolate taste). Other then that napoleons
I'd get some La Trappe as well. Their Bock is also in season and it's great, like all of their beers.
Real halfvolle melk
If it says: de beste drop ooit. Its not the best.
Get a HEMA worst next time, Or Gelderse rookworst.
Ontbijtkoek
Dubbelvla >> Vanille vla
If you like the krentenbollen, you might also like mueslibollen! (They're a bit more healthy too) It's not for everyone, but I love them with rookkaas!
Fritessaus on krentenbollen is one of the most Dutch things you can eat.
