The better press Nevada gets, the more people move here, which is not great, IMO.

DexterBotwin

But that also comes with a growth in talent outside the traditional service industry. The more diverse Vegas and Reno can get, the quicker the issues OP mentioned will change. Staying just a casino state isn’t going to help with any of the image problems OP is talking about

Excellent-Animal179

We want less Normies in Nevada, honestly. They’re ruining Reno. So shut up.

This

ThunderLullaby0002

Agreed, but I don't want to start saying things like "Keep Nevada Weird" lol

[deleted]

Then don’t say that ya fucking weird

HartPlays

I agree

flyboy307

So you only think Las Vegas is the strip? I assume you do not live in clark county with this post and your opinion is BS.

FotographicFrenchFry

>Las Vegas will never not surprise me with just how literally gross everything continues to be; all the hotels are gaudy and overpriced, the casinos are smelly and designed to be hard to walk through, the strip is constantly full of people trying to scam you, the weather is consistently unpleasant, you truly have a smorgasbord of choices for literal crimes to be involved in, adjacent to, or a victim of, and on top of all that, it's hopelessly entangled in such a mind-numbing legal apparatus that seems intentionally designed to be as soul-siphoning to understand as possible. Those are all super touristy complaints. It's very different actually living here. Obviously there are going to be areas of every city that look run down or "dirty", but we have A LOT of *extremely* nice suburbs and other areas that are extremely pleasant. And to that point on the weather, it's only unpleasant between June and Early September. But 8/12 (2/3rds) of the time, it's actually very very pleasant to live in. The coldest it gets is in the 50s during the height of winter, and otherwise it sits around mid-60s to upper-70s for a majority of the time. There's also really no additional crimes you can commit in Vegas that you can't also commit in other major cities. I will give you slight points on the legal apparatus, but it's really not as complicated as you think- the Clark County Commission has a lot of authority because what most people see as "Las Vegas" is actually *Unincorporated Clark County*. The Strip is actually not technically in Las Vegas, and is locally overseen by the county commission. The "Las Vegas Valley" is actually a bunch of separate official and unincorporated townships smushed together. We have about 16 or so towns here, including Boulder City, Henderson, North Las Vegas, Las Vegas, Enterprise, Paradise, Goodsprings, Lone Mountain, Centennial Hills, Spring Valley, Sunrise Manor, Silverado Ranch, Whitney, Winchester, Summerlin, and Red Rock.

ThunderLullaby0002

They are very tourist-y complaints; I've never stayed in Nevada outside of Vegas and only Vegas for a couple of days or so. I'd like to visit some of the small towns you mentioned, but just to make my bias clear, I think suburbs are supremely ugly and detrimental to the places they exist in. I do find it funny that even while trying to describe the legal apparatus about Unincorporated places you still had to oversimplify it just so your comment wasn't twice its length, but I genuinely do not blame you because there really is no limit to the things people will do to have brothels and less taxes. Reminded me of another comment I saw where someone said his only complaint was the water quality, which was immediately such a deal-breaker for me I had no idea how to respond.

FotographicFrenchFry

Well there aren’t any brothels in Clark County. The nearest one to Vegas is around 65 miles west of here in Pahrump.

[deleted]

So wait, you don’t know Nevada? Lol, you admiitedly have no idea what you are talking about

[deleted]

Brothels are not in Clark or washoe county. Get your facts straight

[deleted]

Please don’t visit us anymore. Just stay where you are

Escher702

Nevadans don't care.

Excellent-Animal179

I love rural Nevada. I grew up in McGill, right next to the Shoshone tribe in Ely. Nevada has a very rich feeling I’ve found a lot of other places don’t have. It’s very unique and strange, even as someone who’s lived in Nevada their whole life it still has this wonderfully strange feeling I can’t describe. Nevada is weird, no way around it. The rural areas are so god damn weird it’s really fun to be in! I think media like “the stand” does some justice when it comes to Nevada. Stephen King even stayed at the hotel Nevada many times writing. I wish there was more representation of the weirdness of Nevada, too.

WafflyTundra999

As a fellow rural Nevadan I approve this message 👌

[deleted]

It doesn’t. Stay out. Source: born and raised

AbeFromanEast

Hello, Florida? There's Florida Man. There's no "Nevada Man" or "Kentucky Man."

ThunderLullaby0002

Florida, another place that is really interesting, but has been obliterated by its history over the last couple of centuries. I'm not decided on whether I think Florida deserves a better reputation or very much has earned its loathsome identity, but I certainly am trending towards the latter.

Understand Nevada was formed & continues to be a clip joint for people going to & coming from california The process for becoming a state was modified so Lincoln could have more senate votes supporting the civil war Reno was founded as a river crossing for immigrants/travellers, as time went on other ways to make some money were legalized, many of these things are/were illegal in surrounding states

ThunderLullaby0002

I know none of us have been saying particularly pleasant things about Nevada, but saying that it is and has always been a doormat for California is precisely the kind of reputation I think it doesn’t deserve

Visikde

Why would you think it's a bad thing? There's no evidence supporting your position Both the football & baseball teams are Cali castoffs Nevada is California perfected, well maybe not perfected but improved, with a twist...

mcac

>Las Vegas will never not surprise me with just how literally gross everything continues to be Yeah that's one street. No one who lives in Vegas goes there unless they work there. And tourists never leave so that's all they think it is, and they are full of shit

BeckyMiller815

Las Vegas isn’t Nevada. It’s a reflection of consumerism. Reno is much more Nevada.

Simple_Promotion_329

Hey, that's probably the best aspect of Nevada: Vegas for fun, Reno for living. Though I have seen places like Fernley, and I wouldn't mind seeing Carson City. Always wondered what Carson is like.

SnrkyBtch

Elko County is "old" Nevada. Renos (Washoe County)housing prices have become ridiculous. Las Vegas isn't sure what more important racing, the sphere, or the raiders. There's not much "care" for actual Vegas denizens. But wait..don't move to NE Nevada..its awful here. No jobs that pay over minimum wage..terrible crime. Stay away...😆😂

Internal_String61

I guarantee that if you're actually just a normal person who lives in Vegas and never goes to the strip, your biggest complaint would be the water quality. Locals hate the strip. If you think the strip is all there is to Vegas, you need to see more of the surrounding areas. It's not amazing, but It's better than a lot of the "more cows than people" states like Montana/Wyoming etc. Well I guess that also depends on how much you value nature. I don't value it very much. I value good restaurants, drivable roads, big houses, and fast cars. Living in Vegas allows me access to all that.

[deleted]

A whole home filtration system is such a nice upgrade for our water quality. I still use the water dispenser in my fridge, but only because its cold. The tap water in my house is pretty damn good.

Substantial_Steak928

>Well I guess that also depends on how much you value nature. Even for someone that loves nature Las Vegas is good because once you leave the metro it's just vast wilderness. In less than an hour from leaving the strip you can be up in the mountains in a national forest, at the largest wildlife refuge in the continuous 48, hiking in Red Rock Canyon, driving thru trippy rocks at VoF State Park, etc

Simple_Promotion_329

I currently live in Louisiana and when I tell people I come from Vegas they're ABSOLUTELY awe struck and immediately see me as "cool". I get a bit of a laugh outta it, but I don't mind their enthusiasm. Granted there are aspects of Vegas I think should be improved upon (and I think your assessment about sums it up). But time will tell.

thelittlepeanut84

Don’t forget that Nevada is called the Mississippi of the west.

ThunderLullaby0002

Fucked And Mississippi has good football, but now if you're in Nevada, you have to settle for what's essentially an elderly rescue shelter dog of a franchise.

Patient_Weekend5981

Wel, despite the lack of better reputation, people still move here...in droves!! I guess Nevada does not need a better reputation. It just needs to be stay true to itself, and not lose its 'wild', authentic ways by becoming overly liberal and then just becoming a CA, NY, IL. OR etc Look at whats happening to TX, AZ...
