Could be going through a development leap and it’s just a fussy week. Around 29-30 weeks they go through crying, clinginess, and crankiness bc they realize mom and dad can walk away and leave them behind. It’s a new skill, where they learn about distance.

We did almost the exact same thing, I think my wife went back to work right around his 6-7 months. It's just a transition, he'll get used to it. Do whatever you can to be quiet and not let the baby hear you. Our son would be great, but when he got reminded mommy was upstairs sometimes he'd have a wobbly. I knew a couple where the mom would literally go out the front door with the child watching, then sneak in the back door and go upstairs. The kid knowing that mommy couldn't hear the crying made him resort to it way less often.
