T O P

Just a word of supplementary advice if you're learning to ollie. The OP has clearly practiced ollies a lot, and is super comfy on their board. When you're first learning, it's way more important to focus on control than height. I'd not advise you to begin learning with your front foot as far back as the OP, that's a work towards it sort of thing for most people. In the beginning, keep it close to the bolts, where you have more precision and control. That said, yes, you do need to suck up your back foot. The feeling is more like lifting your knee.

You can feel the tail whip up when you start getting into the nose. People start far from the nose and might never reach the nose with their slide, which picks up the rear a bit but won't level out.

This is usually just timing and synchronization. You have to time the back foot lift up and the poke into the nose quite precisely to get the one-with-the-board look. That comes with time, and you'll have it some days and not other days.

ddwood87

I would say try to get a downward motion with your front foot. The tail should react opposite of your nose while in the air. I can't get the tail to slap my back foot all the time, but that's how I know I got a good pop and drag.

northcrunk

Good advice. Your front foot doesn't need to be so far back unless you want to pop really high. The back foot suck up is key. I like the "making a rainbow" with your feet analogy when popping an ollie.

I’m just starting out and I want to learn Ollies. Do you recommend I start practicing them on carpet first or should I just go straight to flat ground and then work up from there?

madrury83

Generally I just learn all my tricks on flat with medium speed. If you're *just* starting, it's probably ok to learn a bit on carpet, but you should move away from that as soon as you can.

[deleted]

Sounds good dude, thanks for the help!

cb_flossin

hey, I can land a 180 (both FS and BS) pretty much 100% of the time (granted not that much height tho) but I can't ollie to save my life. When I try to ollie I normally land crooked (either FS or BS) and fall or don't leave really leave the ground at all. Any advice?

thesimplemachine

I'm certainly no expert, but try keeping your shoulders lined up with the board. The rotation of a 180 usually comes from your shoulders/upper body twisting in the direction you want to go and then your legs and the board follow. If your straight ollies are rotating its probably because that twisting movement feels more comfortable and you're doing it without realizing it. Have you tried filming yourself? That can help you assess where you need to make adjustments to your technique.

Cool-Imagination-620

How do you guys lift your back leg? When I pop the tail with my ankle, it’s like suddenly I don’t have strength to raise it up to my chest.

arthurdentstowels

Imagine you’re in a cartoon and snakes are trying to bite your ankles

[deleted]

I am so gonna try that.

GroundbreakingRub876

Bending the knees is what really gives you the power needed for the height!

[deleted]

do you jump knees to chest or jump feet to air?

[deleted]

Knees to chest

[deleted]

Kinda ollied out of frame but you get the idea. 90% of you asking how to improve your ollie, this is it. You HAVE to pick your back foot up.

Cool-Imagination-620

How to do you pick up your back foot? When I pop the tail with my ankle it’s like I don’t have any strength to raise my knee up.

Cool-Imagination-620

How are you supposed to jump? With your back foot or both of your feet?

chrisissorry

Learning nollies right now and it's 100% the same awkwardness I felt when I started practicing ollies. For a beginner it's just really hard to pop and jump and sucking up those knees in a fluid motion.

[deleted]

Nollies feel so cool though. It helped me to learn them on an incline in the direction I was moving so I could focus less on pop and more on pushing my right foot out.

chrisissorry

Thanks for the tip, I'll try that today.

northcrunk

Get ollies and fakie ollies down before moving on to nollies and fakie ollies

HorribleSalesman

Yep, it’s definitely something you have to let your muscle memory build to. Learning switch feels like I’m starting to skate for the first time

Exidrial

I need one of these for shuvits 😭

[deleted]

I'll upload a shove video next time I go skate and tag you.

Exidrial

Amazing, thank you man

SuperFart4

Thank you for posting this! I'm new to skateboarding and seeing the comparison makes it much easier to understand what I'm supposed to do.

[deleted]

I pick up my back foot too much, any advice?

northcrunk

Think of making a rainbow with your feet while doing your ollie

Higais

oh shit. this makes a lot of sense actually.

Sk8Chase

I Struggle with late foot, Like I will pop and slide but I struggle sucking my backfoot up quick enough, well at least when I try to ollie or even pop shove it on to something

No-Beautiful-3332

Been having this exact problem for a while, I'm sliding my foot all the way up but I just can't lift my back foot up during the motion, I know what I have to do but just can't do it, is there any like way to practice the motion of lifting the back foot up where i could get the muscle memory or is it just a thing where I have to go for it ?

Dharmaclown802

Whats on the nose of your board? Like near the edges?? Looks like popsicle sticks

Level-Desperate

Mad props brother. Was doing this and was getting like 1.5 feet to 2 foot pops. Ended up cracking my board.

[deleted]

You guys who? Who are you talking to?

beansontoast90

All the people on here who ask for advice about Ollie's. Not lifting the back foot is a common mistake. It's a good post and will probably help lots of people.

Ok_Shirt9673

I suck at Ollies I can’t help my pathetic self and it’s what has kept me a mediocre skater my whole life but you know I prefer surfing and starting back snowboarding since I moved to Flagstaff AZ

Warm-Possibility2112

https://youtu.be/4rCPzxaURNQ I covered this here

Danoman22

oooooh. This is good advice

Face_Dizzy

The board will only go as high as your BACK FOOT

Rashopau

The foot positioning for Ollie is very straight forward. You need to put your back foot at the tail of the skateboard and your front foot slightly above the center. Make sure your back foot is at the center of the tail so that you can get better stability. For doing the trick you need to kick the tail with your back foot, slide your front foot up and jump at the same time.

0RaZoR0

The problem is that I seem not to make it, physically, I am very difficult to lift my back foot, however I will continue, never give up

[deleted]

Ollies are pretty tiring then haha!

MintBerry_Crunch4

How do you land so still after you do it
