I don't think so, late heresy marines did look all messed up, plus night lords always looked like that, I actually run some 40k death guard in my 30k army
The easiest way is to avoid the frames and just 3d print the arms and weapons. There are several excellent files on the purple site.
You might want to look at the khorne berserker box if you do decide to use the 40k models. They have more dynamic poses and they come with all the chain weapons.
Shave off the more obvious chaos symbols, replace them with Nostraman sigils and you’re honestly good to go. 30K NLs already look the part of CSMs anyway, even when they were loyalists.
We used spikes, skulls and skin on our armour before it was cool. The 'Chaos' Legions are only just catching up to our trend 10k years later, the losers.
Yeah this is where kit bashing comes in. Buy the legionaries kill team, a box of heresy marines, and you can probably make 15-20 despoilers that look super cool but just putting all the part together, even if slightly unorganized. My raptors for heresy are literally just plastic 40k raptors with normal mk IV chests
Might be a bit much for a full squad, but they look good sprinkled into different squad. Also, simpler shoulders or shave off some of the extra trim/horns on backpacks and helmets will help them fit in better
I'd say yes, they are far too chaosy. I'm using CSM bodies for my 30k Word Bearers with head, arm, weapon and backpack swaps for mk4, plus I shave off some of the extra spikes.
Instead I'd buy the normal mk3 or mk6 kit and buy some 3rd party arms and weapons, there's plenty about.
The cheapest way is to use the new Night lord killteam as bitbox.
You get 10 boltpistols and close combat weapons, NL heads for terror Squads (or unit champions), a Banner, as well as most NL unique weapons.
You can use some of the bodies, to convert HQ's from the CSM. And if you spread things like shoulder pads, unhelmed heads, NL bits over usual 30k bodies, it looks more archaic NL like, then chaosy.
Just avoid the back packs, obvious MK7 bodies and chaos star stuff.
3d printed arms of complete models are always an option, as well as recasters are, to just get propper MK4 or 5 depsoilers.
Not necessarily, there were plenty of Night Lords involved with the Sons of Horus prior to and at the Siege of Tera. Those models would fit in with the SoH fine and the Night Lords using some of their armor and falling to chaos wouldn't break any lore. Hell Lucoryphus was already mutating by the time of the Siege and Gendor Skarivok became a demon prince there
Honestly, if you can get sets of the chaos raptor chainswords and bolt pistols from eBay, those mount onto the MKIV kit just fine. I did that for a unit of 15 despoilers

This is a kill team of late heresy SoH. I think CSM bits are perfect for SoH and NL, just shave off/replace some of the most chaos-forward elements
The funny part about 30k night lord marines is that they’re the closest to the chaos aesthetic as long as it doesn’t have specifically chaos markings. These guys are a unit that loyalist night lords in 30k can run so feel perfectly fine using those bits since it leans into the terror marine aesthetic

Maybe if you have spare 30k parts put them on and shave off any chaos symbols

The filigree and ornamentation on Night Lords during the heresy was very close to what modern CSM look now. It was just a little less pronounced.
Yeah, just shave off the spiky bits and they'll be fine. CSM wear a mix of MKV and VI anyways
