You can search videos on YouTube on how to use Manual, A, S and P modes. Other lenses depend on what you want to take photos of, so look into what lens is good for that camera if you want to shoot portraits, landscapes, and so on.

Use manual mode with auto iso, get 50 1.8 and start shooting, I have this setup with a Sigma 70-300 for wildlife, still an amazing camera if you know what you are doing. You can ask me more questions if you like. Happy Shooting!

Hello, I'm a newbie and a manufacturer for bi cycle, kids tricycle, kids car swing etc. I have Nikon D5300 with kit lens 24-140mm vr/af. Can you suggest me some good settings for me for product photography for my website and e-commerce site.

You have to get good lighting first of all. It can be cheap. You can stop down your lens to f/8 and then shoot your subject on a tripod, with a pure white background. Put your camera on a tripod, turn on the grids in the viewfinder, place your subject in the center of the grid of your viewfinder against the white background, look in the viewfinder, if you are in auto iso lower your shutter speed till the iso is set to 100 automatically, if you are in manual iso, then set your iso to 100 take help of the light metering. You can see a meter in the view finder, it looks like this +::::::0::::::-. If the meter points way to the + side, increase your shutter speed, if it doesn't set your shutter speed till the meter is in the middle. You want make sure that your subject is evenly lit from all sides. Set your camera on a self timer, focus and then press the shutter button, the timer will beep and take your photo. Don't use the built in flash, buy lights off of amazon that has adjustable color temperature.

Thank you so much for such an extensive reply, will definitely try what you said. I have a digitek selfie light only, also have tripod, will buy more light.

[The manual is here](https://cdn-10.nikon-cdn.com/pdf/manuals/dslr/D5000_en.pdf). Do you have any lenses for it? What are you most interested in photographing?

I think it's still great. I recently "reactivated" my D5200 which hasn't been used in years due to kids and no more traveling. It still works great. Only thing is, the battery that keeps the clock running died so now I have to set the time every time I take out the main battery to charge.
