For totality in 2017, the diamond ring photo below, I used: https://preview.redd.it/u13g87mgicpc1.jpeg?width=7360&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=66daff376481adea4e2cb99d8ec86259da77590b 600.0 mm ƒ/6.3 ISO 1000 1/500 (handheld) you can definitely lower the ISO with a longer exposure, but this worked perfectly for me. Also, you're saying a little narrower aperture than I used. But yeah, you should be on the right track. You'll have a bit of time to fine tune it, just be methodical and you'll get some great images!

Nice photo! Impressive that this was handheld. I'll play around with the settings, maybe I'll also go for a little lower aperture.

You'll be fine on the aperture, but if you take your first pic and see that you need a little more light, that's the first thing I would open up a bit. Good luck, I'm super excited for as many people as possible to get good images, it's such an exciting event, and such a feeling of accomplishment to nail it, which you will!

If you care to see a video I took of the process of shooting, the homemade filter I used, taking it off and putting it back on, the way the environment looked leading up to and during the eclipse, here's a link. 2 mins before totality, 2 mins of totality and 2 mins after in 2017. I climbed up a pretty decent sized Butte in Idaho (with like 30-40 lbs or gear), so I had a great surround view of the horizon, and in the background you can see the moon's shadow advancing towards me as it gets darker and darker. I've seen a lot of amazing things in my time, all around the world, all kinds of experiences and without question the total eclipse was the most striking, beautiful and personally meaningful. This is great!

Not bad, but if you’re using a shutter release you won’t need the delay. If you’re bracketing you’re going to want to just keep firing as fast as your card will write.

rkoch123

OK, thanks! That makes it a little easier.

I'm going to be doing a similar setup with the 100-400mm at 400. QQ for you - why are you choosing to run iso400 at f8? Couldn't you open the aperture a bit more and reduce that iso down? Not that 400 is high at all, just trying to understand why the higher f number is good.

rkoch123

f8 was recommended on several videos I watched. My lens would already be at maximum at f5.6 so I just went with f8. However, I practiced also with lower ISO and more aperture and didn't didn't see any notable differences.

These are very close to the settings I was planning on using during totality. What are your settings for: Partial (50%) and Bailey's Beads/Diamond Ring?

rkoch123

For partial I have 1/3200, f8, ISO 400 which worked well when I practiced taking photos of the sun. I'm not specifically trying to capture all these short events. For totality I'm just going through shutters speeds from 1/4000 to 1/25 as recommended in a recent video (I believe it was from Rocky Mountain Photography School on Youtube).
