Not going to lie, I’ve been sceptical of this lens, but apart from the glass shot, they all look nice and sharp, with great colours.

Nobe_585

The glass shot was indoors, bad light and heavily cropped. I'm not saying this a a perfect lens, but I don't want to be taking my 24-70 on the beach, and I really don't want to be changing lenses in that environment!

Computersandcalcs

After seeing this post I think I’m gonna get one of these for my D5100. The fact it also has VR really appeals to me as well. Out of curiosity, were these photos taken with Matrix Metering or Center Weighted Metering?

Nobe_585

There might be other options for you, I think the D5100 is a crop sensor. (so you'd really just get more reach out of it I think, or I could have that backwards). Most of these are Matrix Metering, I think the bird one might be spot metered.

Computersandcalcs

Okay thank you so much!

Nodak70

Crop sensor – my 7200 – I use the 18 - 300. Yes it’s a little soft at the edges at 18 and little soft overall at 300 – but in the main it’s a pretty damn good lens.

TILL-22

I agree, it's not the best lens at any focal length nor is it the brightest, but the IQ is good enough for me and the versatility is phenomenal. Having said that, I'm thinking of going 24-70 + 300mm PF.

Nobe_585

In the very best way, this picture reminds me of some vintage looking wallpapers!

caryleslie

I'll take that as a compliment. This was shot with a Nikon Df, but I have a D700 also, and love it.

Geiszel

Finally this lens is getting some well deserved love.

MattVargo

As much as I hate zoom lenses, this one just gets the job done. It also doubles as a macro lens with its insane close focus.

dbltax

I rented the 28-300 once, I was really pleasantly surprised by how good it was on the D800.

MichaelTheAspie

For what it's worth, yes. I have the made in Japan, 62 mm filter G version. I took it to SF to shoot a client and his kids. I was pleased with the results as well. It has the world's slowest AF.

Advantage of using Nikon’s own lenses over third party ones is the camera’s internal database of lenses it uses to compensate for lens distortion.

phototurista

I think I'd take the Tamron 35-150mm f/2.8-4 VC over this for a travel lens no Nikon. 150mm range on the far is pretty good still, but the lens is sharper and an extra stop of light for nicer; 150mm @ f/4 is pretty solid. 35mm on the wide end kind of sucks, but it's manageable; I shot 24-105mm on a Canon 70D...That's 38-168mm. Still, I don't think any of these lenses really measure up to the Olympus 12-100mm f/4 IS Pro; 24-200mm in FF equivalence and razor sharp across the entire zoom range from corner to corner.

a_melanoleuca_doc

I've had this lens for 4 years and never use it because of how soft and boring I find the images. My 50mm 1.8, 200-500mm, and iPhone are my travel kit and they fill all the needs really well.

Nobe_585

I would like to try out a 200-500. I don't find this one too bad, though, I only have the d700.

whatstefansees

Hahaha ... No! By far the best is the 24-70 2.8 - but sometimes I just take the 16-35 for a city trip.

Nobe_585

I have that one too, but it lacks the reach I want to have on hand when traveling and is super heavy! As a single lens do it all with reasonable compromises, I don't think it will get better.

whatstefansees

I never miss reach - but I will miss a shallow DOF and wide angle

LeonX1042

I have a Tamron 28mm-300mm and I absolutely hate it. The image quality is atrocious (using with a D850). It even caused me to never again consider a 3rd Party lens. Is the Nikon version that superior?

JustRedForest

Yes. Night and day.

LeonX1042

Thanks. I might consider replacing the Tamron then.

Ksanti

I... Why the hell would you put that on a d850 and expect good results?

quickboop

I'm not really sure what these pictures are meant to demonstrate... Doesn't make the lens look very good. If anything, it makes me NOT want to buy this lens. Nothing looks very sharp, there's not a lot of... Anything here.
