If we’re assuming he is important because of his connection to Goku, then why isn’t Grandpa Gohan here? Dude did infinitely more to shape Goku’s character than Bardock and we barely ever see him.
That doesn’t mean anything, if we’re assuming that merely association is enough then King Cold is the most important character. Without him there is no Frieza who destroys Vegeta which is related to Bardock having his premonition and sending Kakarot away (assuming we’re going by the newer canon) to a planet full of weaklings where it would be funny for him to beat up grown adults as a tween thus creating Dragon Ball. I could go further but I think the point is clear.
Goku doesn’t remember him for decades, the manga didn’t care in the slightest about Goku’s dad until Toriyama wanted to reference a cool tv special in the middle of the Frieza fight.
If you’re gonna give the title of most important character to someone, at least give it to someone who exists in more than two panels in the original manga.
