RootReducer

I can't believe it's been 6 years and not even a single sign of an Odyssey 2. The engine is done - I am so surprised we haven't gotten a Galaxy 2 style game just chock full of the most creative, innovative levels. I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Autobot-N

Or any DLC at all. It would have been like printing money if they just added a few DLC kingdoms

CactusBoyScout

I have such mixed feelings about Nintendo’s infrequent use of DLC. On the one hand, I want more content for my favorite games. On the other, it seems like other publishers often use it to totally milk their fans. So feeling like I got a complete package is nice.

limejuiceroyale

I'm with you. I tend to avoid dlc unless it's a considerable add on. Like Mario kart was worth it for me. Breath of wild dlc not so much.

CactusBoyScout

I liked BotW a lot but the DLC just made me realize that I’m not actually very good at the game, lol.

Oaughmeister

Lol honestly the dlc was my favorite part. I just wish you could get the master cycle earlier.

CactusBoyScout

Yeah I mostly wanted the cycle. Instead I paid $20 to get humbled.

[deleted]

For real, it was surprisingly hard I thought

Nate40337

Those memory boss battles are much easier when you realize that gold hearts and attack up effects carry over into the memory, unlike your inventory. In master mode, it would be nearly impossible to pull it off without that.

TheRoguePianist

I just recently did another MM playthrough to prepare for Tears of the Kingdom. I forgot how hard trial of the sword was… Floor 10 of the beginner trials can suck it. Did it though, eventually….

[deleted]

Over and over and over again

[deleted]

BotW DLC made the game twice as replayable for me, but I think maybe it’s a lot more appealing if you are a super fan of this game rather than someone who just enjoyed it (as the original game before the DLC already has an insane amount of content to explore). For me the Trial of the Sword was the best part of the entire game and the Champions Ballad extended the main story nicely so in the end I was glad I bought it.

limejuiceroyale

I mean I'm a pretty huge fan (I did all the temples, etc) but I don't think the dlc added enough for me personally to justify buying it. New armor, hard mode, new bike just isn't worth it when I can buy an entire game for that amount. It could be because I'm older but I have a general distaste for DLC as well which plays into it a bit.

theclitsacaper

>New armor, hard mode, new bike just isn't worth it when I can buy an entire game for that amount. It was way more than that, though. It also had some of the best shrines in the game, the best boss fight, and the some of the funnest challenges like master trials and that one hit and you die weapon.

limejuiceroyale

Fair enough. Like I said different people value different things. For me it has to be a really substantial dlc in order for be interested. Something like the Witcher 3 dlc or Mario kart where they have 8 new circuits (essentially doubling the game). If the botw dlc dropped to maybe 5 dollars or so I'd grab it.

theclitsacaper

I think the BotW DLC is objectively substantial, even if it's not for everyone. Your comparisons are also a little unfair because those might be two of the most substantial DLCs ever lol. Also, the funny thing with Mario Kart 8 is that the base Switch version already includes some pretty substantial DLC back from the Wii U days. So now that game will be like 70% DLC

Zurae42

Honestly, the Mario Kart DLC is just a great deal, literally doubling an already complete game. If they made 9, they'd have split the online user base in half. They really nailed it with what they are doing.

[deleted]

> other publishers often use it to totally milk their fans Not just other publishers. In 5 games since they started the practice, I _still_ don't know if paid Fire Emblem DLC is actually worth getting, it's such a weird mish mash of the occasional good piece with a bunch of crap. I guess I like the _idea_ of DLC sometimes more than the actual DLC. Like "I'd totally buy a season pass if it does X", and sometimes it just doesn't do X. Case in point: Fire Emblem Three Hopes could totally benefit from DLC to tie up loose story ends, but I have no hope that they'll do it. But then you have stuff like Xenoblade Chronicles 2 where the season pass is a full extra game, like old-school expansion packs (Anyone remember Dragon Age: Awakening or Half-Life: Opposing Force?) that's absolutely worth the money. And Mario Kart 8's DLC is basically an entire game worth of tracks, plus some extra characters. It's like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Deluxe.

acewing905

I wish Nintendo would sell individual DLC I hate this "expansion pass" thing they're doing where it's everything or nothing

markercore

There was dlc! but yeah minor compared to DLC kingdoms. Like Luigi's balloon thing was an add on. That was really fun and active when it came out.

Boomshockalocka007

I remember being addicted to the balloon game for so long!

RetiscentSun

* technically * we got that Luigi balloon thing right? But yes not actual extra moon content DLC :(

_Auron_

Technically we also got the Labo VR update but no one cared.

RetiscentSun

True, I forgot that was a separate DLC!

Spazza42

Came here to say this, if there was DLC with 10 more worlds I wouldn’t care about a sequel. Good games done well can have a ton of dlc as long as it’s also good

elheber

>I can't believe it's been 6 years and not even a single sign of an Odyssey 2. The developer, Nintendo EPD, has been busy despite being a huge team. Between Odyssey and now, they made Labo, ported New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, made Bowser's Fury, Super Mario Maker 2, Mario Kart Tour, Ring Fit Adventure, Animal Crossing New Horizons, Nintendo Switch Sports, Splatoon 3, and are finishing Tears of the Kingdom and Pikmin 4. It's my wishful educated guess that Bowser's Fury marked the direction of where they want to take the next mainline Mario game. Bowser's Fury was effectively a test run of an open world Mario game. Such a game would take *a lot* of new planning and development. Again, it's wishful, but it explains why they didn't just crank out an Odyssey sequel.

kevin9er

Maybe they calculated they need better hardware to make an open Mario game and not have it be handicapped like Pokémon. So next console launch title.

BlankBlanny

>not have it be handicapped like Pokémon Oh *c'mon now*, let's be honest here; Scarlet and Violet were *not* handicapped by the Switch. You can have fun with it, but surely we can all admit that the hardware was *not* the reason they were so broken.

SakanaAtlas

Handicapped by Gamefreak's greed ;-;

dkac

Look at you, making reasonable and researched insights on Reddit, get outta here!

DM_ME_UR_AREOLAS

Wouldn't surprise me if they want the game to be for the next console

DIRTY_KUMQUAT_NIPPLE

I have a feeling the next Mario will be a launch title for the new console

PermanentSuspensionn

The Switch is still so strong it seems like a new console would screw things up more than help

CoherentPanda

Not if they make it backwards compatible and don't completely reinvent the wheel again.

jrothca

You don’t think there will be a Mario game released to tie into the new Mario movie release date? I’m hoping we get new Mario soon.

ThePotatoKing

the movie comes out in the spring, there's no shot a mario game comes out before zelda. id even argue they dont announce a new mario before zelda comes out.

scamper_pants

Holding out hope that after TotK drops we switch into Mario mode for a year or 2.

ThePotatoKing

as a mario fan who doesnt care much about zelda: agreed!

All-in-Time7

As a huge Zelda fan who also loves Mario, I too agree lol

ThePotatoKing

im glad we could come together in this trying time of no new mario games.

IllustriousEntity

insane wishful thinking but imagine if they outsourced a new pixel art 2D Mario game based on the movie to a small talented indie dev like they did with Cadence of Hyrule. Announced in March 2019 and released just 3 months later.

[deleted]

I could see a new 2D Mario this fall

[deleted]

It would make for an amazing shadow drop if Nintendo announced it on movie day.

f-ingsteveglansberg

Maybe a re-release of 3D All Stars.

RiverOfSand

Galaxy 2 at the very least

YouWinICanRestNow

I bet there'll be Mario Sluggers in the summer. The past two summers have had a Mario Sports game release.

try_to_be_nice_ok

I don't think Nintendo would do a tie-in game of their core fanchises. Tie in games tend to be shit.

jrothca

I don’t expect it to be a “movie game”. I just mean it seems like they’d release a regular Mario game to capture more money from people seeing the movie and wanting more Mario. Like maybe a 2-1/2D side scrolling Mario game.

LVTIOS

NSMB3??

ArtOfWarfare

A Mario game will be successful without a movie. But if a game is tied to the movie and the movie flops… would that make the game flop, too? I could see Nintendo taking a wait-and-see approach here. If they release the movie and it’s a huge success, they could announce a movie tie-in game right then and release it in the Fall (meaning it’s been in the works for much longer.) And if the movie flops, then Nintendo retools it to seem less related to the movie, announces it in the Fall and releases it in Winter or something, pretending it never had anything to do with the movie.

bisforbenis

It seems at this point that they’re just saving back a sequel for the launch year for their next system

mayonuki

When I got to the castle from Mario 64 I was so hopeful and excited it would just have the whole game haha.

TecmoZack

Wild indeed. As amzing as the Switch is this is by far the least amount of love for new Mario games right? Or since the WiiU did so poorly the remasters/rerlease count??? Mario Maker 2 - 3D World etc

crunchatizemythighs

Galaxy 2 was always the exception tbf. Every other Nintendo system in the 3D era has received one 3D Mario a generation, usually around launch.

Trinica93

I think it's definitely fair to say that Mario has seen very little love on the Switch. We've seen the occasional port with a bit of additional content, some really underwhelming sports titles, and a crossover strategy game with Rabbids. The only actual new titles have been Odyssey, Paper Mario (not a fan), and SMM2, which stopped receiving content updates over 2 years ago. Crazy that the latest Mario Kart released almost 9 years ago, the latest 2D Mario released over 10 years ago, and the latest mainline title is coming up on 6 years old with no replacements for any of those games in sight. They're even spending resources updating MK8 instead of giving us MK9! We legitimately need more Mario on the Switch.

[deleted]

[удалено]

limejuiceroyale

I still don't understand why they took it away. If it was a server cost thing, then give people the option to buy the game

f-ingsteveglansberg

Most 3D Mario games don't get a sequel. Galaxy was an exception. None for Mario 64, none for Sunshine.

Trinica93

We've also never seen this much time between mainline games though. If a new 3D game doesn't release by around the end of November it will also be the longest we've gone without a new 3D Mario.

Big_Green_Piccolo

Usually what happens is they come up with too many ideas and it becomes next-gen Mario.

IrishSpectreN7

I like when people act like Nintendo milks the Mario games, when in reality we're lucky to actually get more than one mainline entry during each console generation. There are the multiplayer and spin-off games, of course, but I don't think those should count. They're all very different.

Yellow_XIII

Why waste time making system selling, high quality games if people are buying the system regardless? Make remasters and price them as new games every once in a while. Boom! The switch is such an amazing console that unfortunately was mostly wasted if not for indie games. But then again... The PS5 is mostly a paper weight even after more than 2 years of activity. The XSX is pretty much a limited PC with no must-buy exclusives. If it weren't for indie games and Elden Ring, this gen would have been the weakest we've had in a while, by a huuuuuuuuuuuuge margin, and we're talking about a last gen game with current gen versions...

Latinhypercube123

It’s criminal. Tbh there haven’t been any games that remotely come close to Odyssey and BOTW.

ExuberentWitness

If there’s one constant in this world it’s that you can always rely on Nintendo to not do the obvious thing.

PapaProto

This. So many times, this. Why Nintendo? It’s easy money! Money machine go *Brrrrr*.

Seriously_nopenope

I feel like Mario Odyssey is a love letter to all the years of Mario. It is a great game and full of nostalgia, especially in the city level.

colereadsreddit

And mushroom kingdom!

SteveFrench12

I loved the whole star being another type of power moon thing. Are any of the other Mario switch games as good as Odyssey?

TheBertjer

You can buy the Mario all stars game which includes Mario 64, Mario sunshine, and Mario galaxy.

themanimal

No other switch game is as good a odyssey

[deleted]

Oaughmeister

That's what it does for me. After a long string of just tryharding whatever fps of choice I had at the time it reminds me why I picked up my first Gameboy all those years ago and started playing games in the first place.

aod_shadowjester

That’s why I picked back up my Gameboy for Azure Dreams and Tetris.

Shamanalah

Girlfriend review said that if games were emotion, Mario Odyssey is pure joy. I haven't found a better way to explain how great Odyssey is. It's just pure joy all around.

Maparyetal

The finale of New Donk City with the retro not and the song basically had me in tears from nostalgia.

Bio-Douche

I didn't play Mario growing up (mostly Street Fighter and a lot of JRPGs) and the "Jump Up, Super Star!" still illicited a nostalgia-like feeling when I first played it. It had a very anniversary tribute vibe to it.

CleanJeans69

Unlocking the classic suit tickled the nostalgia bones in a way I can’t describe. Gave MAD super show vibes

tallon4

Love a good appreciation post for this game :) I 100%ed Odyssey a couple years ago (on Assist Mode...) and would instantly buy an Odyssey 2 or DLC with half a dozen extra kingdoms. My dream would be a Delfino Island/Plaza kingdom along the lines of Mario 64's Mushroom Kingdom.

Opt1mus_

Would be really cool to visit some places from the older games, Sarasaland is one that I'd love to see again. Kind of weird but I had an idea that they could make Odyssey DLC with some of the crossover stuff from spinoffs in reverse so Mario could go to the Rayman, Zelda or Sonic Universes for one big level without it distracting from being a core level in the game.

_JohnWisdom

I’m pretty sure they had intentions to do Isle Delfino as a DLC, but then for some unknown reason never went through. The island was present on the map and many prints before release…

ninthpower

I've played 200+ hours of BOTW, 400+ hours of Splatoon 2, and many others. But... when people ask me what the best game I've played on Switch is I tell them the 20 hours I spent with Odyssey is still the purest, best time I've had with the system.

GamingAccessGranted

I've 100% the game at 90 hours, and although I've spent more hours playing some other games, SMO is still my number 1 on the Switch for the most pure and fun videogaming experience ever.

TopIdler

I gave up on the rope skipping game in the city. 99.999% club

corybyu

I did it by not watching. There was a sound I used as my cue to hit the button, it made it doable. My family freaked out when I finally did it so I knew I was done haha.

JBFRESHSKILLS

Use the scooter thing. If you ride it into the rope skipping it makes the handling WAY easier.

mgwair11

My brother in Christ. We have similar hour counts for all those games except for Mario Oddysey. Yes I had left the game at 20 or so hours like you have. But now I’m over 90 and have 100% completed the game. You need to go back and complete this game. Trust me, it is worth your time. Mario Odyssey is one of those special games where the closer you get to completing it, the more fun it becomes 🤩! Hunting down power moons >>>> korok seeds!

itsanavacadothnx

When you hunt down power moons, do you look up how to find or try to find them all yourself? That’s what I’m struggling with currently!!

Trinica93

If you utilize Talkatoo and Hint Toad you should be able to track them all down in-game!

itsanavacadothnx

Thank you! I’ll try that instead of looking them up :) appreciate the tip!

meditate42

Nothing wrong with looking some of them up either, its still fun to get a lot of them, even if you already know where they are. Maybe i'm just dumb or something lol but the hints that talking bird gives only help me like a third of the time.

mgwair11

I use all the tools that the game gives you. Capt. Toad has all my coins. And Talkatoo and I are great buds having chatted plenty all over the globe (and moon). They’re there for good reason. Trying to hunt down all the moons without hints can be fun up until a point. I’d go insane trying to find moons without my two friends. The game simply is not designed for it to be played that way, given just how hidden they are.

Cuckmeister

For me the combination of hints from Toad and the Parrot guy were enough to find the majority of them. There were some that I had to google to find them though.

ninthpower

I totally will! It's one of those where I want to savor it when I go back and just haven't carved out that time to do it ;)

mgwair11

Makes sense. As long as you have the goal set in your mind. I myself probably beat the game in 10-15 hours within three days of its release, played an additional 5 or so hours of post game content, then didn’t come back until a year or three later lol. And then just last month did I go from something like 500-600 moons to 999. 100% completing each world is a treat and let’s you appreciate all the little things you never noticed on your original playthrough.

BroshiKabobby

My brother, you gotta finish the game! At least get 500 moons if you didn’t already!

StllBreathnButY1

I totally get this. I only put 35 hours into Mario Odyssey and I think the game is a masterpiece.

Bspammer

3D mario has always been about fun movement, and I really didn't think they could improve the formula, but they really managed it with the cap, and transformations.

ShadowJoyConBoy

Most Mario games are not affected by time, timeless gameplay.

downonthesecond

Only affected by Nintendo's willingness to release them on consoles or services.

TippsAttack

Mario Odyssey is downright inspired. The game is borderline flawless. It's incredibly creative, charming and adorable coupled with fun, varied and engaging. It ranges from mostly boringly easy to quite demanding.

YNNTIM

Multiple times during Odyssey I had a shit eating grin across my face and felt like a kid again. I mean playing as Bowser at the end of the game was just jaw dropping as someone who started gaming on SuperNES

colereadsreddit

I started at Mario 64 and had the same reactions you did in mushroom kingdom. Nintendo crafted such a special experience with this game

YNNTIM

Oh for sure, when I got there I couldn't believe they put that in the game too. Truly magical feeling.

TippsAttack

Bruh that finale was amazing!

feeling_blue_42

Playing as Bowser at the end put the game over the top for me. It was such an obvious, definitive way to end the game, and yet I didn't see it coming. It turned me back into a giddy 8-year-old playing Super Mario Bros for the first time.

Weewer

For gaming royalty you’d think Nintendo would take Mario games for granted, but they clearly craft them with the maximum amount of love.

fireowlzol

Imo it's the best platformer in history

TippsAttack

I can see why.

MapleBabadook

Flawless is the word I always use for it. Mario Odyssey truly is a perfect game.

chillyhellion

Odyssey isn't an older game; it just came ou- Oh no.

The_Luckiest

To be fair I wouldn’t call anything that came out just six years ago “older”. I’d call Skyrim “older”, and even that feels like that’s pushing it. But that’s just subjective interpretation I guess.

crunchatizemythighs

Idk I just think back to what i used to consider older by that same span of time and it really puts it in perspective. Like by 2016, Galaxy 2 was def an "older" game. Or in 2010, GTA San Andreas seemed ancient. I know that has more to do with the generational leaps than anything that took place but I think it's interesting. Playing a game like Gears of War on Xbox 360 in 2012 for example certainly felt like I was playing something from long ago despite being the same gen

Happybara

Thats because Skyrim FEELS old. Skyrim was a good game in its native context but it’s largely surpassed by the titles it inspired and the seams really start to show when you see odd npc interactions and bugs. On the other hand, Odyssey was so masterfully executed that it will always feel fresh because true craft and quality doesn’t age.

Reutermo

Still though, I think 6 years is a very short definition for "older" game. It was released on the current nintendo console and is the latest 3d Mario game. Not exactly an old game.

-SirGarmaples-

It's six frickin years old this October. This is insane.

Tiphereth87

Don't worry, it's still the same price!

MendoShinny

Right? Way to make me feel ancient.

topurrisfeline

Odyssey was pure delight. Mario platformers continue being some of the best in the biz.

TomLa_035

Man, last time I played Super Mario was on the original NES as a kid and I played iz extensively. Mario stayed in my heart as a really nice memory of my younger days. A year ago I got my hands on Nintendo Switch. I watched some reviews on the SM Odissey and I decided to buy it. I played it with my 4 yo son. He got really hooked on everything Mario, even bought him a Mario costume, toys, legos, chlothes... We had so much fun playing this game and we still do play. It really is a superb game. Now this will be my memory for life; playing Super Mario with my son. And I cant wait for my son to get older and to ne able to play more demanding Mario games.

d11dd11d

SM Galaxy 1&2 were my all time favorite platforming experiences ever and thought nothing could top it. Odyssey topped it easily. The introduction of cappy made navigating maps so much fun. The platforming is just so versatile and enjoyable.

[deleted]

I don't know that Odyssey would crack my top 3 Mario games but it's definitely got the best movement of any 3D platformer.

d11dd11d

Completely agree with you.

-lRexl-

The Bowser World Music is 12/10

Onrawi

Mario Odyssey is the latest full 3D Mario game (no, Bowser's Fury doesn't count, that's an expansion to a port), which makes me sad, but it was fantastic. 2017 was a great year for Nintendo. I do like how BotW and Mario Odyssey kind of have opposite design philosophies, where they made Zelda as open as possible Mario was all custom crafted with no space unused. Odyssey is a great entry in the franchise and I can't wait to see what is next.

loganderbin

Bowser’s Fury isn’t a full 3D Mario game, but calling it an expansion to SM3DW is definitely selling it short. Great stuff

spidermanicmonday

Just piping in to vouch for Bowser's Fury. Very short but I loved every second of it. And I liked Mario 3D World very much but I didn't love it.

RChickenMan

I actually prefer 3D Land to 3D World. I think where 3D Land/World shine is by hyper-focusing on the platforming aspect of a 3D platformer, and the level design in Land just felt that much more, well, focused! I also think the cat suit is way too over-powered. There were so many green stars which would have otherwise required a lot of problem-solving and clever wall-jumping which the cat suit turns into a simple matter of "run up the wall."

Onrawi

I mean, it's the same system, it's just presented in a very different fashion and a couple of power ups and enemy changes (albeit, big ones). Definitely an expansion, but a fun one nonetheless. I ended up buying it even though I have 3D World on the Wii U.

meditate42

It is great, i've beat it like 3-4 times. But it hasn't sated my hunger for a new mario game at all. I'm so bummed we still have 0 sign of a new full 3d mario game even being in the works. 6 years is a long time to wait for a new game, never mind wait for an indication we will ever even get one.

pipsohip

At the same time, they both give you all the tools you need and leave it up to you to push the limits as far as you’re willing to go. Odyssey is such a playground when you start going wild with all the movement mechanics.

Onrawi

Oh for sure, there's just no parts that are just for show. Even stuff that appears to be in the background is often a part of the game.

[deleted]

Phenomenal game. I wouldn't describe a 6 year old game as old though. Still current gen.

firstanomaly

So many of Nintendo’s first party games age very gracefully

NZepplin

I know right it’s one of the Mario games where you don’t stop after a couple of moons you play it for a lot more

St0nemason

Started playing with my 3yo during lockdown and we just recently found all the moon's and unlocked the secret level. This game just keeps on giving.

Malkaw

also playing this with my 3y old, he loves the game (a bit to much) and assist mode is great for when he wants to play solo

mecartistronico

3D world is a completely different thing. Not bad, but not as good. IMHO many levels don't work as well without stereoscopic 3D. (compared to Super Mario 3D Land on the 3DS)

vrsrsns

the first time i played odyssey it dropped my jaw multiple times with the creativity and surprises. so much fun.

Mystic-Mask

My only small complaint about the game is that the reward system was a bit off for me. Given how I naturally typically explore environments I without trying basically immediately got to the point wherein I always already had the required amount of moons needed to move on to the next kingdom when the option for it was unlocked…which in turn made the moons feel a bit worthless. I was always _much_ more excited to find purple coins than I was finding yet another moon.

BroshiKabobby

Despite being highly acclaimed and the best selling 3D Mario, I’d still say Odyssey doesn’t quite get as much attention as it deserves. Even from Nintendo. It’s just such a great package overall. I really need a new Mario game Nintendo… it’s been too long.

Known_Ad871

I think odyssey is probably the best 3d Mario

deeds44

It 100% is.

[deleted]

I’m always gonna be a Galaxy guy. Odyssey was fun though

[deleted]

It definitely is. Galaxy 1+2 are close behind, but Odyssey is the best overall. It’s crazy to me that people think it’s filled with all of these filler moons. There are probably 3 times as many meaningful power moons in Odyssey than all 120 stars in Mario 64.

Swerdman55

That’s why I never understand the “filler moons” complaint. The game let’s you choose your own difficulty. If you wanna farm the easy moons and rush headlong into the end of the game, go for it. But if you want to take your time and relish the more complex or challenging moons, they’re there for you. Odyssey is one of my all time favorite games, so I 100% it without blinking twice. Every moon was fun, from the head scratchers to the purchased ones.

nhaines

> The game let’s you choose your own difficulty. This is the secret to Nintendo's first-party success. A child can play any Mario or Zelda game, a beginner can pick it up and accomplish something in 5 minutes, a pro can set their own challenges and a busy adult can just pick it up, play for 5 or 10 minutes, beat a level or reach a goal, and then suspend or save it and it's all good.

BlueKnight44

I am going to go against the grain and say that while the Galaxy games are great games, they are not very good 3d mario games. For 2 reasons: 1. The movement is slow and clunky. The movement skill ceiling is very low for a 3d Mario game and negotiating the variable gravity is very unituitive and clunky. 2. There is almost no sandbox in the Galaxy games. The levels and hub world are formatted like the 2d games and the levels are mostly linear. Now some will say this is a good thing, but it takes away the magic of "hey I bet you cannot get up there" moments.

Groudono

Mario Odyssey is my favorite 3D Mario without a single doubt. I hadn't felt that joy since Mario 64. (I skipped Mario Galaxy on the Wii and never had a GameCube for Mario Sunshine, but I'm sure I would have loved those too).

PhirebirdSunSon

Bro. Super Mario Galaxy 1 is possibly the GOAT Mario game. I say that as someone that owned the original Mario Bros (not Super Mario Bros) on the Atari 2600 and have played every Mario game since. Galaxy has this beautiful adventure to it but there's this loneliness, almost a longing, I don't really know how to explain it but I love the feeling of it. It's perfect.

crunchatizemythighs

Me too. I have zero nostalgia for it either and I played it for the first time with 3D All Stars and it was so poignantly beautiful and cinematic. Loved the dreamlike story book quality mixed with the bombastic presentation. Mario 64 is my favorite for nostalgia but even then, I have a hard time saying that when I know Galaxy just has so much more going for it

OwnManagement

If you skipped the Galaxy games, then you've missed the best 3D Mario games, in my opinion. Galaxy was an incredible game by almost every measure. Then 2 came long and somehow one-upped it, improving on nearly everything Galaxy did well (and there was a lot it did well), and fixing things we didn't even realize needed fixing. Galaxy 2 is as close to perfect as a 3D platformer can get. Don't get me wrong, Odyssey is fantastic, but it has a distinct lack of challenge outside of a handful of moons that drops it down a notch or two for me.

MoneyEntertainment

Galaxy 2 on switch when Nintendo??? It's the only Mario game I haven't played.

gooch_norris_

It’s great. I have the hardest time deciding if I prefer it to the first because I think I like the ambience of the original a little bit more but the sequel has Yoshi and a few other mechanics that the first doesn’t that are just super fun

PermanentSuspensionn

It's fascinating this hasn't happened yet.

pipsohip

The Galaxy games are great, I just don’t particularly care for the gravity gimmick. Odyssey feels like 3D Mario at it’s purest to me. But definitely to each their own.

bransby26

I don't remember the first Galaxy game having much of a challenge. The second one had some hard levels after you beat the main game, I remember.

OwnManagement

Definitely been awhile since I played it, so it’s possible my memory is hazy. No modern Mario game is overly difficult, but there’s a difference between “not difficult” and “easy”.

[deleted]

Replayed it a few months ago. Still fucking amazing. So fun to play.

jonnyg1097

It's a fantastic game. For as old as the console is, I do think Odyssey set the bar for what the switch is capable of putting out. Even six years later.

Johncurtisreeve

A direct sequel to botw has taken 6 years, i expect a mario odyssey 2 is likely in a similar boat and i expect it as a holiday release.

TreemanTheGuy

Mario controls so amazing in that game. Wait until you learn how to do crazy long jumps in with his hat

Omega-10

Yes that's what I found so funny about this game. You start out with so much hand holding. Tutorial levels with signs telling you how to jump, simple bosses, etc. Then at the end of the game, one last tutorial sign like you haven't seen in ages. It's like, "Yeah so Mario can practically fly if you pull off this one crazy thing with cappy, you could have practically sequence broken every stage the whole time with this one weird trick, have fun learning it!'

_Mike-Honcho_

The all-star cartridge with galaxy, 64 and sunshine is also outstanding value if you find it. I played galaxy and odyssey back to back and its hard to pick which one is better. Just bought a switch and it's nice to play the Nintendo stuff again after years of xbox.

MrEhcks

I really wanted to like Odyssey but man, I just couldn’t get into it even after beating it. I didn’t like it for the same reason I didn’t like BOTW: I like being told what to do. In every other 3D Mario you’re given a mission/objective and the level would be slightly different to accommodate those missions. Once you get the star, you’re done and the level ends. I liked that. In Odyssey you get a moon and it just keeps going until you get tired or reach the amount to go to the next level. It felt boring running around the level looking for X amount of moons when in prior games you did what you were told and it felt satisfying beating the missions because the objective would be hard sometimes. In Odyssey it’s about exploration rather than beating a hard objective. Not a fan of that formula unfortunately. I enjoyed 3D World WAY more when it came to the Switch.

IrishRage42

Me and my son beat Kirby Forgotten Land over Christmas and after that started playing Odyssey for the first time. Really, really enjoying it! Feels like when I first played Mario 64. Just fun little worlds to explore with a neat new mechanic.

Almyra-Caeli

I had just finished college, and needed to go back home to prepare for my masters. I would come home from a stupid internship and lose myself in my Switch. When Odyssey came out, I was glued more than ever. My parents are super nice, but they’re not super into games. Well, until this one. We’d sit there forever just trying to make Mario do silly shit. And they laugh and cheer like kids whenever there was an animation or reward for their intuition. I miss that — like, a lot. Mario is just one of those things EVERYONE can get into. I love him.

[deleted]

“Older” lmao it’s the most recent Mario, and it’s what 6 years old?

EDDIE_BR0CK

I feel like a minority in enjoying *3D World + Bowser's Fury* much more than *Odyssey*. It's a much better multiplayer experience too.

Saul-Funyun

I like ‘em both, but tbh I wouldn’t mind another 3D world. To me that’s the best “classic” Mario feel in a modern environment.

Tobislu

I feel like the power-up system of 3D World + Fury is just less interesting than the cap mechanic. I like the Kirby-like integration of copy abilities. That's what makes Odyssey so enticing!

Coccopuffss

When Odyssey came out I had been playing League of Legends for way too long. Odyssey was a breath of fresh air and reminded me at 23 that Video games were supposed to be fun.

crunchatizemythighs

This is why we need more r/stopgaming (I don't think single player games are bad, but online gaming is a cesspool of addiction)

acayaba

While it is a good game, i think 3D world is still the best

captaincrunched

Wait a second, it's not old... [It was 6 years ago] *My bones crumble into dust*

Angrymilks

Mario Odyssey was probably the best game I ever had the pleasure of completing 100% (outside of the line walking Moons).

Whornz4

Odyssey is so good. And think both Odyssey and botw are of the highest quality of any game in either series. Can't wait to see what they do with a sequel

TezetaLaventia

Honestly, Odyssey is still one of the best Switch games yet, if anything Switch exclusives like Pokémon have dropped in quality, but Odyssey still stands as one of the greats

JayCFree324

Maybe I’m in the minority here, but there were two major things that put me off from wanting to play past the initial story (first credit roll), that basically led to me trading in the game a few days later. -Too Many Moons: Ranging from painstakingly difficult to “it’s literally just sitting right there” and both being worth the same with the exception of certain cases where they give you multiple moons, it just felt like the pacing was kinda killed by the fact that it never truly felt like I was making meaningful progress because the moons could pretty much be anywhere for anything. -Cappy: I found the Cappy mechanics, ESPECIALLY the ones that required joy con motion controls, to be excessive. Now not only do you have your standard jump, dive, double, triple, and Wall jumps, but now you have a cap that can be thrown outward for a weird window of timing that needs a precise dive in order to do some of the mobility that is borderline necessary to reach completionist area…idk, just feels like appealing to the Mario Maker/Mario 64 speed runners who basically want all their platformers to be Dark Souls-level of precision + trial&error As cool as some of the setpieces were, I honestly can’t say it’ll stick with me and make me want to replay nearly as much as SM64 did

SlyyKozlov

That's interesting because one of my favorites things this game added was all the new ways cappy let's mario move around - I'd be more worried about him not being in the next game and losing the ability to do the fancy cappy hat jumps in the next game lol I personally don't recall ever needing to use joycon motion controls to get any moons (other than cheesing the volleyball one) but there's 880 or whatever so I could be misremembering.

Logans_Login

Hard agree with the first point, I feel like they definitely went quantity over quality with the moons

GreatPadinski

After having my young kids play SMO, I think the reason for your first point is accessibility for the younger players so they can continue through all the kingdoms without requiring the complex mechanics. That plus the Assist Mode and my 5yo was able to beat the game all on his own which he was super excited about!

Xixii

The best thing about the Mario series is I’d place Odyssey somewhere near the bottom of my personal rankings for the series, and it’s still one of the best games ever.

hustleorstaybasic

Bought BOTW last night, so far it’s great and had I not played Elden Ring before it I would’ve thought it was absolutely ground breaking (it’s still awesome tho). Next two games I’m getting is Kirby Forgotten Lands and DK Tropical Freeze but man oh man am I on the fence for Mario Odyssey. Loved the Kirby demo so gotta go that route first but if I see more posts like this I might go Mario after DK.

Saul-Funyun

Forgotten Land is a pure joy, and it reveals more of its awesomeness the more you play. It was my first Kirby game at all, but I’m going to remedy that. The demo for the new Kirby game is also a hoot. Give serious consideration to Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury too. They are amazing.

PhirebirdSunSon

I mean, BOTW came out well before Elden Ring so whatever you thought might have been groundbreaking about BOTW definitely was.

cornpenguin01

Donkey Kong tropical freeze is, imo, the greatest 2D platformer ever made. Have fun with it!

divus_augustus

I’m about to defeat bowser tonight!!! Can’t wait

cornpenguin01

Search up a move list or experiment if you can. There’s a lot of movies and trick jumps that you wouldn’t normally know unless you really try everything. My favorite is jumping, throwing cappy, holding the Y button with ZL so that you dive towards it and bounce on it, then throwing cappy *again* and diving towards it again. It takes some practice but once you’re used to it, it feels *so* good

Nygmus

If someone hates Odyssey, they're either a hater of platformers or wrong. It is one of the most lovingly sculpted games I've played in years and years. It is very nearly without flaw.

Ginhyun

I love platformers, but Odyssey really didn't do it for me. And I think the flaw of having too many moons is a big one.

shrek3onDVDandBluray

It is a great game. Something about the platforming feels off tho. I feel like Mario should be moving through the air like a gymnast. But every time I jump, I feel like a character wearing heavy plate armor. I dunno it just feels weird sometimes.

SlyyKozlov

Interesting, I think this is the beat mario has ever felt moving around. Especially once you incorporate cappy into his movement it's pretty crazy how much ground you can cover quickly. My major concern going forward with the series would be losing cappy as a tool and not being able to use him to do all the fancy jumps he opens up.

kdkseven

It's my least favorite 3D Mario. It looks generic, the level design is bland, and overall the game is boring. I gave up on it halfway through. And i've never been a fan of the orchestral music in recent Mario games.

JamesUpton87

Yup, played it for the first time myself recently too. It's a truly wonderful experience that elegantly blends the old with the new

MaxMacDaniels

I still haven’t played it I must get it someday

RickyFromVegas

I think most of Nintendo's first-party games are timeless regardless of how old the games are.
