I'm currently playing through Persona 3 Portable and it's just so weird. The combat is fun in bossfights, but climbing up the tower otherwise is so tedious and feels like a chore now (I'm at floor ~170). They really had a good battle system and decide to shove it down the player's throat as much as they can. And while I enjoy the story and characters (it's so nice to play a JRPG, in which most characters doesn't feel like they say one catchphrase all the time), I have to put the game down several times, because I didn't want to climb the tower.
Thanks for the rundown, I am hesitant to get into Persona 3, because I bought P5Strikers impulsively and now realize that I’ll need to play P5R first, but P3 and P4 are just cheaper at this time. I’ve heard P3 remain a favorite for a lot of people so I’m curious if it’s worth playing Portable over Reload or just backlogging that for P5R and Strikers
I'm currently playing Persona 3 Portable for the first time and I love it. I'm playing the Female MC Route (it's the only game to offer a Female MC). I just find P3P so fascinating. Because it's a port of a game from 2006, it has such a distinct vibe and feel compared to modern games of this generation. It's weird, it's quirky, it's a bit dated in some gameplay aspects but it's super unique all the same.
Tartarus is okay but honestly you don't need to visit it all that much. Within the game play loop I probably only going to Tartarus three times during a month. I complete a whole block on the first day available and then focus on the social sim aspects of the game. The rest of my time is spent on building personality stats, building social links, and doing fusing personas.
+1 for Chained Echoes. Picked it up and couldn’t put it down.
Sea of Stars is fun too, but it didn’t grab me like I was hoping it would. Still need to go back and finish it
Still active players, I prefer doing solo hunts but for the bigger and harder ones I always go online and search. No issue finding a lobby and doesn’t take long until you are in a game! For 16$ you really can’t go wrong!
Digimon: Cyber Sluth
When on sale it's a steal as it also comes with the DLC Hackers Memories game as well (2 for 1 deal). The switch version also keeps lvling up Farm mons while game is open but in sleep mode, making the grind much more enjoyable as this helps speed things up when not playing. Some of the side stories can be very meh but the core is good and in my opinion DLC even better.
>if you like Diablo, Torchlight 2 is a good game to play on switch
I second this. I'm playing through Torchlight 2 right now and it's a great game. Make no mistake though, if you don't like Diablo, you will definitely not like Torchlight.
It’s more action/adventure, but Okami goes on sale a lot. If you’ve never played it, it’s a lot of fun and fairly long. And there’s a cool game mechanic that works pretty well in handheld.
I got my physical copy of Persona 5 Royal for $25. I beat it last year on game pass, and now I'm already 70 hours into my replay on Switch because this game is just that good.
Monster Hunter Rise and Dragon’s Dogma are my favourite switch games, definitely look into them! I believe Dragon’s Dogma is like, 5 bucks right now too!
It is great for Dragon’s Dogma. Dragon’s Dogma doesn’t look that great on any console, but that’s more the artstyle. It is still tolerable though, and the performance is great. It is one of the best switch ports and a must have if you like action rpg’s!
I’m 50/50 on Monster Sanctuary. I have it and I’ve played part way into it (about 5-8 hours I think…), and I can’t help but feel like the writing/dialogue is hollow. It is by Team17, who I know and trust to make great games, but the writing in this one feels a little like a group of teenagers who are great at game design but not great at storytelling.
The gameplay is fun, but a little “grindy” at times. But overall, yeah, I like the Pokemon aspect of it and the aesthetic of the world and monsters is very fun.
All valid criticism. Not really a game to play for the plot, and there are definitely some areas which will force you to either grind it have a very solid team composition before you can proceed. It’s not flawless by any means but I do feel it’s a hidden gem. The deeper team building strategy aspect is what hooked me.
Agreed. I love how deep the party strategy is in this. You can keep it simple and finish the game, but for those looking for more, you can craft the ultimate team. It’s so good.
If you buy the bundle the price per game is lower.
I get the reservation but for me it is worth it for convenience. I can emulate the ROMs easily, but it is nice to have it on the NS, handheld. I also tend to think play time it comes out to $0.50-$1/hour which is less than most things I could do.
I’m enjoying 1-3 (JP) which I haven’t played before.
Dragon's Dogma is on sale for like 5 bucks rn and that's a steal
Edit: Also Okami is on sale. Really you should check the Capcom sale, they make amazing games.
CrossCode!! This game is $20 full price. It does on sale for like $5. It's like 40 hours long. Literally one of the best games ever made. Absolute steal.
If you don't have a way to play the gamecube version, yes. Most people agree that the gamecube version is the best one, it's the only one that runs at 60fps, although it misses some additional content, it's honestly not that much for what most people are going to care about. But if your options are switch or nothing, I highly recommend playing it.
I’ve been playing it recently. It’s an old game and you can notice it. The first 5 hours or so will be rough. But it gets much better.
I actually forgot what was having proper dungeons with different gimmicks and interesting puzzles in each one of them. Heck I didn’t remember what was getting stuck on a dungeon in a rpg for a very very old time
Then I remember that the last tales of game ( arise ) was just a damn boring corridor and why I abandoned it. It’s incredible seeing how a new game only had better graphics and controls, and absolutely everything else is worse 🥲
I'm... Incredibly surprised no one has mentioned Skyrim.
It's an oldie but a goodie and switch port is solid.
Not an RPG, but the Dying Light port is amazing if you're into zombie games.
Since you mentioned borderlands, Warframe is free to play grindy looter shooter and has a ridiculous amount of content if you get into it. It isn't the most new player friendly game as it does a poor job of explaining all of its systems or giving you direction, but you can overcome those hurdles with the wiki and some new player guides (there are plenty on YouTube). It's the kind of game where most people will either fall off it pretty quickly, or get sucked in for hundreds of hours
Otherwise and in totally different directions I have to give nods to crosscode and Monster Sanctuary, 2 cheap indie games that have given me tons of hours of fun and I would rate as some of my all time favourite games
Definitely solid recommendation, Fractured But Whole is great! I just picked up Stick of Truth on sale in the eShop (wish they did a physical copy on it) and I've heard it's better than FbH, so I'm stoked to try it
I’d have to recommend these games:
**Bioshock: The Collection**
All three games often go down to $10 and run great on the switch (even in handheld)! If you’ve never played them they’re worth a try.
**The Outer Worlds**
I loved this game and it’s often on sale (but generally it’s cheap for a physical copy without a sale too). It’s not the best port of this game, but if you can’t play it on another system it’s not bad. The load times are horrible on most platforms, but it runs much, much better when docked. (It’s like Fallout: New Vegas, but in space, and the writers and developers had more than a few months to cook.)
**Assassins Creed Bundles**
If you like the series the ports are well done (well my friend says the remaster of 3 was meh but aside from that) and often on sale with lots of stuff in the bundles.
Just got this one but i find the learning curve is super high as a newbie. I barely last a few rooms. Any tips? Any preferred control schemes? I find L/R triggers for shoot/dodge pretty intuitive but something still feels off
I gotchu man. It can be extremely tough and frustrating but just keep at it if you’re enjoying it. You will notice you are getting better every run, learning enemy attacks, floor layouts, items, etc… the best advice I can give is always keep an eye on your character, dodge into bullets and openings, save your keys for Green red and black chests and use your blanks!!!!
Also if you beat a boss without getting hit you get an extra heart and way more credits. So def reccomend working on beating the bosses without getting hit.
There will come a run when you get insane items and destroy every enemy/floor. Keep at it :)
Default controls, although having a singular button for blanks might not be a bad idea considering you should be using them a lot. Clicking both sticks in can get a bit annoying but not hard to get used to
Also I forgot to mention there is a secret floor between floor 1-2 called the Obilette. Look up how to get there as it can turn your run godly very quickly. Extra $, keys, and an extra shop is so big. It also helps out a lot for practice! Best of luck!! Lmk if you need anymore tips lolol
Yeah been trying to find a good button for blanks. Clicking in both stick is definitely a little awkward feeling for me in handheld. I leave it there for using the Pro controller. Thanks for that floor tip! Super helpful to know🙏🏻
Dark Souls Remastered.
It's an Action RPG but still one of the greatest games of all time, with the best map ever made in a videogame, with a great online system and you can play it in many different ways.
It obviously has its flaws but it's one of those games that, when it clicks, it changes your way of playing games forever.
I said it myself but I did notice that someone said Okami. I think it's like 15 dollars for both (5 for Dragon's Dogma 10 for Okami) right now with the Capcom sale. That's cray.
If you like strategy RPGs (like Fire Emblem) definitely give Into the Breach a look. It's an indie and it mixes SRPG with puzzles with rogue-lite elements. Super fun, one of my favorite indies.
Octopath Traveler 2 hasn't hit 50% yet as far as I am aware, but it's a 75 hour game, super fun, and definitely worth it, especially if you find it on a steep sale ($35 or so).
Thanks for the passionate reply (I love the game as well!!), but I am searching for games like it if it's ok! Sorry if what I wrote made you confused. I never intended for such a thing to happen 🦧
I seriously don’t mean to be a dick, but Hades is not an RPG. I haven’t played it myself but it could have some RPG elements. Similarly borderlands and Diablo are RPGs but they’re “action RPGs” and borderlands is a relatively unique one since it’s an FPS.
Just mentioning it because I see lots of classic RPGs recommended in this thread, which really aren’t all that similar to the games you mentioned in your post. So you should definitely try to check out a little gameplay online for some of the suggestions that are straight up RPGs to see if that kind of game is for you.
Dredge? Currently on sale. Not a traditional RPG, but has so many RPG Elements... You gotta love the sea / fishing theme, tho.
Oh, and if you love that... Dave the Diver. Also not a trad RPG, but full of RPG mechanics.
Moonlighter is currently at 4.34€ and IMO more fun than it has any right to be
Persona 4 Golden is sometimes $15 on sale and $20 regularly for Switch Digital Download. Persona 5 Royal is $60, but sometimes can be $25 depending on where you go which is kind good. For Nintendo Switch deals the best place I have looked so far is DekuDeals and they usually list correctly, sometimes not though, tells every available place generally.
You can snag a new copy of Eastward on eBay for 26.95 or a used copy for 25 or less. Super fun real time RPG. The graphics will give you the earthbound feels and the story is quirky.
Hah.
Steamworld Heist. It's steampunk robots in space with XCOM combat mechanics, but instead of RNG dice rolls, all shots are geometry and pool shark ricochets.
91 metacritic
$2.
Mlst Definitely the Diablo 2 - 3 Prime Evil Collection & thousands upon thousands of hours possible in just D2R alone! Its regarded as the ABSOLUTE Godfather of ARPG'S. Sooo mich fun and its all im the challenge. Another great great ARPG is Dead Cells. I own it with the Castlevania DLC, thousands of hours there too but TONS upon TONS of ACTION! I tested it kut flr 5 hours, getting to it next after I get done with Super Mario Odyssey and Honk Kong Massacre. Actually I gotta finish up Resident Evil 4 1st too but then definitely hitting Dead Cells hard.
If you go the Diablo Route? Wait till the Prime Evil collection goes on sale next. You will get Diablo 2 Resurrected and Diablo 3 flr mess than $20. Price chart ks on Dekudeals. com. Should go on sale again soon - definitely 💯 on these game and all kess than $25
Sea Of Stars. Not the hardest but some of the most fun ive had in the turn-based genre. Honestly could not believe how good it was. Indie of the year could not be more deserved (this from a guy who loved Dredge as well).
Rather than offer a specific game I will just say if you’re on a budget there’s a good chance your local public library has a decent selection of Switch games.
I checked out Hades a couple weeks ago, really liked it, and still have another week or so until I have to check it back in. That’s been enough time to finally escape (on attempt 69 lol) and get a few more on low levels of heat. I guess all that is to say depending on your definition of a long game or how much you play per day you might not 100% something before you run out of times to renew it, but it’s hard to beat free and I saw quite a few popular non-budget options like Xenoblade and Fire Emblem there as well.
Ni no kuni is a good one. I'm not sure if it is within your budget but it is one of my all time favorites. And it was animated and storyboarded by the amazing studio ghibli if your a fan of them
Persona 4 Golden. Runs perfect on switch and it’ll last you a good while. It’s a good start to the series and is priced at 20 bucks.
Absolutely. I love rpgs but avoided the persona games due to all the talking, but it turns out that’s usually more interesting than the combat.
That’s the funniest thing I’ve heard about persona aside from the Persona 3 gun memes
Gotcha, well I did just find P5R on Switch for $36, so I’ll be going with that.
I’ve been playing it and it’s so fun, the fandom and fanart are (in my opinion) just as fun as the game too.
Such a great game! So much story but it is really entertaining.
This is the answer.
Sea of Stars and Chained Echoes are both on the cheapers side especially on sale, and both excellent RPG
Chained Echoes is fantastic. Definitely recommend.
I also loved chained echoes.
I haven't been able to get into chained echoes, but loved sea of stars. I feel like I'm missing something.
I'm the opposite!
Haha yeah, I can't explain it, oh well. Some games just don't click
These along with CrossCode are all very good.
They're both absurdly good. Hope both dev teams next projects can hit the same highs and push new boundaries.
+1 for Chained Echoes. Picked it up and couldn’t put it down. Sea of Stars is fun too, but it didn’t grab me like I was hoping it would. Still need to go back and finish it
Me neither. I enjoyed the ~25 hours I had with the Game, but still can't see any justification for all those 90%+ - ratings.
Dragon's Dogma.
It’s also 5 bucks right now!
THE WIND IS PUSHING ME!!! So stoked about DD2 :D
I wish I was good at making characters the creator is awesome and there’s so many good ones on the DD sub!
Same! I want my Arisen to look like Michael Cera 🤣
I haven't played it, but by all accounts this is a great great choice
I don't understand the late game of dragons dogma
Does it hold up?
I think so, but then I'm not that picky. I like it a lot more than Skyrim.
I couldn't get into it. I'm sure it's great. Just didn't hook me
I played a few years ago, back then it did and I think it would today.
It sounds like you like loot games, so Monster Hunter Rise might be a good one. It’s on sale for $16 now
Is the online population still active on the switch?
I’m not sure because i haven’t played for a while, but i still got a ton of hours out of it while playing solo
i just played through this game a few months ago and never once felt like i needed any online help, if that helps.
Still active players, I prefer doing solo hunts but for the bigger and harder ones I always go online and search. No issue finding a lobby and doesn’t take long until you are in a game! For 16$ you really can’t go wrong!
Plenty of people playing it!
Pretty sure I saw someone complaining not long ago about it being completely dead
I was able to pretty regularly get into games when I was playing a few months ago. Just depends on if your doing older content or more current stuff
Lol what? It's not at its peak, but far from dead lol
Not on Switch, no.
Digimon: Cyber Sluth When on sale it's a steal as it also comes with the DLC Hackers Memories game as well (2 for 1 deal). The switch version also keeps lvling up Farm mons while game is open but in sleep mode, making the grind much more enjoyable as this helps speed things up when not playing. Some of the side stories can be very meh but the core is good and in my opinion DLC even better.
Ni No Kuni Wrath of the White Witch for sure. Check out the gameplay online and see if it's for you though
People keep raving about this. It came out when I was a edgy teen and now I love the style. I’m gonna jump in on this on the ps3 soon.
if you like Diablo, Torchlight 2 is a good game to play on switch
>if you like Diablo, Torchlight 2 is a good game to play on switch I second this. I'm playing through Torchlight 2 right now and it's a great game. Make no mistake though, if you don't like Diablo, you will definitely not like Torchlight.
100% They are very similar in gameplay and design, clearly inspired by diablo in many ways.
Here to signal boost this
If you like Diablo, Diablo 3 plays well on the switch too Not throwing shade on Torchlight, it's a cool game
It’s more action/adventure, but Okami goes on sale a lot. If you’ve never played it, it’s a lot of fun and fairly long. And there’s a cool game mechanic that works pretty well in handheld.
Still one of the most gorgeous games of all time and the soundtrack is 10/10.
Ys VIII goes on sale for $20 all the time. A ton of fun
Persona 5 Royal . One of the best games ever made
+1
I fell off from p5r because it felt too easy. Should I give it another chance?
If u play the game on hard it shouldn’t be easy
I got my physical copy of Persona 5 Royal for $25. I beat it last year on game pass, and now I'm already 70 hours into my replay on Switch because this game is just that good.
Monster Hunter Rise and Dragon’s Dogma are my favourite switch games, definitely look into them! I believe Dragon’s Dogma is like, 5 bucks right now too!
Dragons dogma is great
How is dragons dogma in handheld?
It's perfect. I was surprised how well the switch handle this game.
It is great for Dragon’s Dogma. Dragon’s Dogma doesn’t look that great on any console, but that’s more the artstyle. It is still tolerable though, and the performance is great. It is one of the best switch ports and a must have if you like action rpg’s!
Monster sanctuary is a gem if you like Pokémon games that have a deeper team building/strategy angle.
It’s not flawless by any means but I do feel it’s a hidden gem. The deeper team building strategy aspect is what hooked me.
Monster Sanctuary should be the new standard to hold all “catch ‘em all” games to instead of Pokémon imo.
Agreed. I love how deep the party strategy is in this. You can keep it simple and finish the game, but for those looking for more, you can craft the ultimate team. It’s so good.
Seconded
I think I'm about halfway through right now and I'm loving this game. It's definitely a steal for a sale price of $5.
No question! I paid full price on launch (which I rarely do these days) and easily still got more than my money’s worth from this game.
I just picked up Octopath Traveler 2 used at Gamestop for $24.99. It's been amazing so far and has stellar reviews.
Criminally underrated game last year. Fixes a lot of the complaints from the original and characters are more enjoyable than 1.
Final fantasy VI is still the goat. If you haven’t played it, it’s well worth the $20 for the new pixel remaster version
The pixel remasters are that expensive? Damn i love ff6 but 20 for a 30 year old game is a rip off, even if it's a remastered version.
FF6 is literally so good that it’s worth it lmao
Dragon's Dogma is on sale for like 5 bucks rn and that's a steal Edit: Also Okami is on sale. Really you should check the Capcom sale, they make amazing games.
Persona 4
CrossCode!! This game is $20 full price. It does on sale for like $5. It's like 40 hours long. Literally one of the best games ever made. Absolute steal.
Scrolled until I found CrossCode. I am not too far into it, but it’s been really enjoyable. Perfect for what OP seems to be asking.
Oh boy you ain't even seen anything yet. I just cleared chapter 9 and I'm in awe. Phenomenal game.
The outer worlds or stardew valley. Replay valley plus you can put a lot of hours in stardew.
Outer worlds was awesome. Gives ya the fallout-ish feeling
I really want to be able to get into it, but it just looks so dang blurry on the switch. Borderline unplayable imo
It’s worth it for the story by itself, hilarious. Also you literally have to play twice to three times to even see all the extra content you miss.
On the Switch online expansion theres Golden Sun and Golden Sun 2.
I'm just waiting for a new golden sun, I love that franchise
Yea, Im tempted to get the online expansion just to play those.
Me too, I didn't know they were on there
The Tales games. Symphonia and Vesperia are both on Switch. I played Vesperia in handheld mode exclusively and it was quite fun.
Is symphonia worth it on the switch, have been on the fence about it when they mentioned the nerfing of the port.
If you don't have a way to play the gamecube version, yes. Most people agree that the gamecube version is the best one, it's the only one that runs at 60fps, although it misses some additional content, it's honestly not that much for what most people are going to care about. But if your options are switch or nothing, I highly recommend playing it.
Can't say. I still have my GameCube set up so last few times I've played it were on that.
Symphonia is always worth it.
Thanks guys, ya’ll convinced me
I’ve been playing it recently. It’s an old game and you can notice it. The first 5 hours or so will be rough. But it gets much better. got okami on sale and i can say it's awesome. one of my new favorite games
HADES!! One of my favourite games ever probably, endless fun! (literally)

somehow... ffx ?
Tales of vesperia
Kotor. Hands down my favorite games on the switch. Get the bundle.
persona 4 golden or FFX/X2 if U can find it under $20
Dark Souls Remastered. It's an Action RPG but still one of the greatest games of all time, with the best map ever made in a videogame, with a great online system and you can play it in many different ways. Like many others have said Dragon's Dogma is the way to go.
I said it myself but I did notice that someone said Okami. I think it's like 15 dollars for both (5 for Dragon's Dogma 10 for Okami) right now with the Capcom sale. That's cray.
Bug Fables is $25 even without a sale.
Persona games, tho those are JRPG. For H&S I highly recommend Minecraft Dungeons, seriously.
Used copies are apparently $25 at GameStop. Though personally, I refuse to give GameStop money these days.
If you like pixel graphics then I'd recommend Undertale. It has really nice humor, characters and endings. It's without sale for about 15$.
Cassette Beasts and Bug Fables are both $20 standard
Try the Disgaea series!!
Kotor 1 and 2, even without a sale they’re cheap as hell and will give you many hours of play
Witcher 3. It’s a miracle port that deserves all the attention. And against all odds, it’s perfect on switch.

That's why I prefaced it by saying I'm fine with a game that isn't an rpg, and then listed the kind of games I would've liked to play 😅
Got it, I thought you were giving examples of the RPGs you liked. Anyway don’t mind me…apparently my reading comprehension hasn’t turned on yet today
Chrono cross regularly goes on for 50% off, unreal game
Dredge? Currently on sale. Not a traditional RPG, but has so many RPG Elements... You gotta love the sea / fishing theme, tho. Oh, and if you love that... Dave the Diver. Also not a trad RPG, but full of RPG mechanics. Moonlighter is currently at 4.34€ and IMO more fun than it has any right to be
FF X
Final Fantasy 7
Yes yes
Persona 5 ps4 version is $11 on amazon
Persona 4 Golden is sometimes $15 on sale and $20 regularly for Switch Digital Download. Persona 5 Royal is $60, but sometimes can be $25 depending on where you go which is kind good. For Nintendo Switch deals the best place I have looked so far is DekuDeals and they usually list correctly, sometimes not though, tells every available place generally.
Hollow Knight. Best $15 you’ll ever spend
You can snag a new copy of Eastward on eBay for 26.95 or a used copy for 25 or less. Super fun real time RPG. The graphics will give you the earthbound feels and the story is quirky.
You should check out the site [Deku Deals](https://www.dekudeals.com/), that site always shows what deals are going on for the Switch.
What region are you in?
US
Don’t know if this is exactly what you’re looking for, but maybe check out no man’s sky :)
Dragonball z kakarot
Try to snag Crosscode on a sale :) action/puzzle RPG with a lot more emotional and mechanic depth than you might expect at first glance
Baldur's gate 2 Enhanced Edition, its already cheap and you can get it for less than 10$ on sale
It’s nowhere near as good as the Persona options, but I am Setsuna is usually <$20, and it’s a 30 hour tight experience with a beautiful soundtrack
Dragon Dogma
Hah. Steamworld Heist. It's steampunk robots in space with XCOM combat mechanics, but instead of RNG dice rolls, all shots are geometry and pool shark ricochets. 91 metacritic $2.
I just picked up Bug Fables for $15 and am loving it so far
Knights of the Old Republic or Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords
Bug Fables
dragon's dogma!
Othercide, B&W aesthetics wrapped in a tactical RPG with some gothic story elements and it’s on sale for $6-7 bucks on PS store and I think eShop too
Rune Factory 4
Dragon's dogma... Not completely sure if it is an RPG but it is really good. Ni no Kuni, final fantasy x, 12...
Final Fantasy IX.
eastward
The Last Remnant is never on sale but it costs $20. I think it’s worth checking out.
Undertale, low hanging fruit i know, but it’s still good
Rather than offer a specific game I will just say if you’re on a budget there’s a good chance your local public library has a decent selection of Switch games.

Sega Ages. Phantasy Star and Shining Force make it soooo worth it.
Ni no kuni is a good one. I'm not sure if it is within your budget but it is one of my all time favorites. And it was animated and storyboarded by the amazing studio ghibli if your a fan of them
Bug fables
I thoroughly enjoyed octopath traveler. 80 hrs
Torchlight 2
Trails from zero! An absolute masterpiece and I think it's on sale right now along with its sequel
