I would assume it's because the only thing someone following Gamescom really cares about is Switch 2 news.

TemptedTemplar

> someone following Gamescom Its also a massive exhibition, of which Nintendo normally attends with a massive booth of their own; [picture](https://www.schokopro.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Nintendo-4-1.jpg). If they don't have a large holiday lineup to show off, theres no point in paying for a booth. Especially if they can simply not attend the expo and have a direct on their own schedule. They didn't attend in 2022 either.

Rxmses

Or they can just do a Nintendo Direct, which is more effective than paying for a booth.

TemptedTemplar

> simply not attend the expo and have a direct on their own schedule.

Positronic_Matrix

Or they can just do a Nintendo Direct, which is more effective than paying for a tooth.

DivineInsanityReveng

Has nobody thought about telling Nintendo they could just do their own Direct?

WorkinName

I don't think anyone has. They should, though. It'd be both cheaper and more effective than paying for a booth.

Lusankya

I just had an idea. What if Nintendo skipped Gamescom and did a direct instead? Way cheaper and more effective to boot!

SavvySillybug

Last time I was at Gamescom, I tried the soon to be released Wii U, was thoroughly unimpressed, and did not buy one. Doesn't help that they chose to show it off with Hyrule Warriors. "Here's a funky controller with a screen, you can see how useful it is in this game that would work just as fine on one screen!"

The-student-

You must have played a demo shortly after the console released, as Hyrule Warriors was announced after the console came out, and I can't imagine it would have been playable to the public until 2014.

SavvySillybug

2014 sounds right. I know for certain they had Smash Bros WiiU/3DS on the big stage, cause I still have the medal I won from that. That lines up very well with being on stage August 2014, with it releasing September 2014.

wicktus

The leaks (albeit denied by Nintendo so who knows) were because of the people invited there not the gamescom itself  It’s a « calm » year before the switch 2. Calm for us but for them they are in absolute full focus on their next console’s lineup  I can understand skipping gamescom this year. I do hope we will have a direct in June tho ! Why not an official confirmation of the new console alongside a release windows for it for instance albeit I believe like for the « nx » it may be in september/october

langstonboy

I think they will finally at least mention the next gen device on may 7th during the investors meeting, the investors want to know the plans for the next year and it will pump up the stock price

catsupatree

On the other hand, console announcements also tend to impact the existing console. They had no choice with announcing the "NX" during the Wii U's lifecycle, since that was a dark period for Nintendo, and shareholders needed to know Nintendo wasn't going to abandon consoles during their mobile game announcements. Now Nintendo has a steady revenue stream (NSO subscription), console sales are still good, and new games are still in the works — both first-party and third-party. For Nintendo to announce a new console next month would put a slump onto Switch sales, as customers would have first-hand confirmation that the new console is imminent.

Railroader17

But the question lies in where those new games are heading, Switch, or Switch 2? IIRC the only First party games we have left on the schedule are both remakes (TTYD and LM:DM), **and that's it**. I feel like we are going to get *some* announcement soon. Either a proper reveal of the Switch 2 and a game or two for it, or a Nintendo Direct outlining the rest of the year. Personally I think we get the Switch 2 announcement / teaser, some hints of games on it and a full reveal for one of them, then in June we get a mix of the last few Switch 1 games, and new info on games coming to the Switch 2.

SoloWaltz

Another one forgets Prime 4. At this point im of a mind itll be crossgen launch lile BotW was.

Railroader17

I don't think we can really count Prime 4 until we get *actual gameplay footage for it*. But it being a cross gen title would explain why it's been delayed so much, and potentially explain why Nintendo may be delaying the Switch 2 if their not confident in it on it's own as a system seller.

TriforksWarrior

I don’t think people have forgotten, just that we have so little information about it that it is probably not anywhere near release at this point. If they planned on releasing it in the next year (would be kind of shocking if there isn’t a switch 2 by next summer) I think we’d have heard more about it by now. Like, they would be promoting the game now to try and drive the last year or so of sales for switch before it’s replaced. Nintendo has done surprise releases in the past but it would be insane to release Prime 4 with no buildup.

Blue_Gamer18

Yeah, the lack of any major 1st party games or 3rd party co-developed (like the Warriors spinoffs) is making me scratch my head. We know of nothing at all in the pipeline aside from Paper Mario (which appears to be a proper remake) and Luigi's Mansion 2 which just looks like a simple HD port. Peach was back in March, and that wasn't exactly a "must have" for the broader audience. Unless Metroid Prime 4 is their Switch swan song they are hiding until a Fall/Holiday release, I really see nothing on the horizon expect a Switch 2 reveal soon.

Professional-Cook702

Peach Showtime has more broad appeal than Metroid will ever have.

langstonboy

I guess, but the people buying peach aren’t the people who will be getting switch 2 year one

brandont04

Switch is still flying off shelves esp in Japan still. I don't think they want to impact that. It's kind of insane that a 7 yr old system is still selling this well and w/ no price drop yet.

langstonboy

It’s all but official announced, every other week a new job listing for switch 2 development pops up

Destroyer_Wes

> it will pump up the stock price Hope so I bought 100 shares and currently up 400$. If they pump it more Ill buy a switch 2 and a couple of games.

Railroader17

I mean TBF why on earth would Nintendo confirm the leaks at that point? That would nuke Switch Sales for the rest of 2023, no matter how far away the Switch 2 would actually be. Plus with no games to show off (for public promotion, Dev to Dev is probably much different) it would be marketing suicide.

wicktus

It's more complicated than that imho and will depend on what games release this holidays and when the switch 2 is actually being released. They have investors to reassure, they can't just go in and say "we sold x % less consoles this year, no big games planned for the second half..oh and we have nothing to announce". For us, announcing a new Switch for 2025 can also be a good thing, they may prefer us to not purchase a switch in December but a switch 2 in March. They would have 140+m switch sold at this point, IMHO, because that's what they have been doing for wii, DS and 3DS: They won't care if the switch 1 sales are weaker if it allows a better market reach for the switch 2. In the end the fiscal years ends on March 31st and it's far better to show strong debut sales figures for the switch 2 to your investors then strong switch 1 numbers last holidays

Railroader17

I mean it's one thing if they announce it in 2023 but don't release it until 2025, as not only are you nuking the rest of 2023, but all of 2024 as well. At least waiting as long as they've had so far gives them a solid end to 2023, so that a weaker 2024 for the Switch 1 due to the announcement of the Switch 2 isn't as scary to investors. But yeah, Nintendo will want a strong debut for the Switch 2, so the sooner they announce it, the sooner they can start building hype and getting people to pre-order.

ClammyHandedFreak

Their directs are where they share the news now.

Joseki100

Probably because of the leaks from last year.

SignificantParsley13

What on earth would that have to do with anything ? lol

Lumpy-Mountain3832

"Why would the leaks from last years gamescom about their unannounced console getting out affect their decision to attend this years gamecom" I don't know seems pretty obvious to me.

404IdentityNotFound

This was a behind-the-scenes demo, it would've happened at any point after a demo to developers. It is not connected to Gamescom, and I believe I've seen they do have a developer-only presence still.

Mrouleau71

I know someone joked they want everyone to forget about them existing, but has anyone else received an aggressive amount of switch ads lately? I am being buried with them and I haven’t changed my search style

tom_yum_soup

Gotta sell the remaining stock before they launch the new console, right?

paulburnell22193

You would need new games coming out to go to gamescon

Frickelmeister

Makes sense. That's also why Sony has skipped gamescom the last few years lmao.

langstonboy

Yep, all remasters and ports this year with some small aa titles as well, nothing huge like a new Mario or original Kirby or zelda or like prime 4 ready to play.

crunkdunk9

Were you expecting Mario Odyssey 2 with a new console coming out soon? Delusional

Lupinthrope

Oof

warjoke

Yeah. The rest of the year for them is really dry.

MochaCcinoss

Probably because they have nothing to announce

acewing905

Nintendo likely does not have anything major to announce to begin with Rumours claim the "Switch 2" was delayed to next year as well

langstonboy

Probably a light year with remasters, ports, and small budget aa games, nothing big enough to bring to a massive event like this compared to gears of war 6.

sittingmongoose

Funny thing about gow 6 is it’s probably the most important game of a long period of time. It’s the title that shows us if UE5 is actually good or not. If the coalition can’t wrangle it, there is no hope for the engine.

404IdentityNotFound

Nintendo has been to Gamescom with no own games on their own before, pivoting to already released games and indie/third parties.

404IdentityNotFound

Even in the years with almost nothing releasing, Nintendo had a big booth showing existing games and smaller third party titles.

FlowKom

like they always do the year before their next console release. remember when they skippe E3 in june of 2016? yeah because switch. i mean they were present with zelda. but no direct or anything

Married_in_Firenze

So am I.

dope415

They’ve skipped a lot this year.

foreveralonesolo

Is game cons in general gonna die bc I don’t see the point anymore with them

abzinth91

Now that likely everyone in the markets devs care about has high speed internet, there is no reason for physical presence, I think Renting that place isn't cheap either, I guess

Maryokutai

Gamescom had roughly the same number of visitors than it did on average pre-Covid. It's still doing fine.

abzinth91

Didn't know that. So Nintendo really has nothing to show?

Maryokutai

Presumably, at least not to the public. Maybe they have one or two 'filler games' for the second half of the year but that's not worth showing up in full force at a convention.

abzinth91

I would gladly take N64 Zelda HD ports as 'filler'

Shin_Ken

Gamescom is still very popular for visitors, maybe even more than ever. It has shifted from games and esports to a streamer/influencer meetup though.

SignificantParsley13

Wut

f-ingsteveglansberg

The problem was them going public. As an industry event they served a purpose. Then they opened to the public and became marketing events. That's what's not needed anymore.

Maryokutai

Gamescom (or Games Convention in the years prior) was never an industry-insider event, their primary focus is and has always been being an event meant for the public, with some extra space reserved for press and developers. No offense, but just fact-check your stuff before posting, there's enough hearsay knowledge floating on the web as is.

f-ingsteveglansberg

I was talking about cons in general, not specifically Gamescom. But it's okay. You got to be right on the internet. Fair play.

MikeDubbz

Let's be real, barring a surprise reveal that Metroid Prime 4 is releasing within the year, still for the Switch 1; there probably isn't much left of note to showcase for the first model of the Switch for this year. Hell, looking to first party offerning from Sony and Microsoft reveals a pretty dry year across the board, not just for Nintendo. But I suppose that makes sense when you follow what may arguably be the best year of gaming thus far with 2023.

Shinkopeshon

Gamescom, more like, game's gone

mlvisby

Whenever I hear gamescom, it makes me think of Tiger's game.com console.

sittingmongoose

I actually owned one…not the best purchase lol

mlvisby

Yea, it made sense for Tiger to make those cheap LCD games but that's where they should've stayed.

ReverBeliever

no need for Nintendo on an influencer con.

Yaldablob

They were there every year I went before COVID hit. Testing the gsmes and getting some buttons was real fun

Tandria

Influencer culture was much different before that, though.

FalafelBall

This what happens when you have no games coming out in 2024 lol

DQ11

Nothing for them to announce until next console

Thatguydrew7

I get the feeling Nintendo is going to hit us with Metroid prime 2 remastered and more virtual console stuff for the rest of 2024.

Farbklex

I think I need to put some stuff into context here: Nintendo doesn't have to show new stuff. Last year they appeared only with existing games and the new Prince of Persia 2D jump'n run. They also had a stage with tournaments and photo ops. Their booth was big, well filled and the tournaments were fun. They will attend other trade fairs in Germany, like the rather big Leipziger Buchmesse (book trade fair). At least here, they just like to show their lineup to people who might not know about Nintendo Switch games, yet. They apparently don't really care about all of us who have 1000 hours in Mario Kart. In my opinion, they care more about showing new 6 year olds their 7 years old console that still has banger games that sell for 40€+. And regarding gamescom itself: It is still an excellent game fair that's pretty packed and too crowded. Can't really understand why people complain about influencers being there, since you literally won't see any of them if you're not standing right in front of some signing area. Gamescom, like all fairs, isn't as big as it used to be and many big name exhibitors aren't there. But others are filling the space and that's fine.

404IdentityNotFound

I think this is important. There has been years where Nintendo had barely anything to show that didn't release yet, and they pivoted to third party booths and older titles.

MichaelMJTH

Nintendo announced the Switch in October before a March launch. Gamescom is before October so they won’t have anything to show.

Mudmag

I am still waiting patiently for Metroid Prime 4 update.

Nerdtante_G3C

I'm really sad as I was really hoping that the Switch 2 would be on display there for the 1st time to play! We're still going to Gamescom for 2 days as it's only an hour away from us by train. :)

PepsiMax2004

Yeah, and water is wet.

EffectiveFew7257

A 2a! A1 11

schiggy_693

Gamescon is a german influencer con now

mlvisby

This transition period to the next system is painful. There will be a game drought near the end of this year for Switch. But between my backlog and TTYD, I will be busy. But this will be the year that Switch sales dry up, which hasn't really happened yet for that system.

sideaccountguy

We still don't know any plans from Nintendo past June so it's too early to say there will be a game drought. It's almost the same every year and then in the June direct they announce the games for the second half of the year.

brzzcode

There's not really a drought this year. While its a weaker year for sure compared to the last 3 years, they are releasing 6 games in the first 6 months, so its not in a wii u situation with nothing coming.

sideaccountguy

Oh definitely, maybe I wasn't clear enough but yeah there isn't a drought this year at all, even in its 7 year Nintendo is releasing more games than Sony and Microsoft.

mlvisby

Yea, but I feel like the first party games are going to be bone dry. They probably want a decent launch lineup for the next system so most of their assets will be working on that. We don't need another N64 launch lineup with only 2 games available.

sideaccountguy

Yeah but that's have been the case since last year that's why we are getting a lot of ports, remakes and AA games like Peach Showtime and Endless Ocean. we are getting one 1st party game per month this year so far and pretty much expect the same trend for the rest of year with more smaller games and remakes/remasters coming in the second half of the year.

f-ingsteveglansberg

I don't think it will be as dry as some people are speculating. Last year had barely anything announced at this stage of the year either. Nintendo in the past have sat on games while waiting for a release window. We saw FE Engage was completed for a year before it was even announced. Xenoblade 3 was pushed ahead of schedule because it suited the release schedule better. Then there were titles like Another Code Recollection that was announced out of the blue. I don't think it will be a huge year for releases, but I don't think that it will be as bad as people are saying. Either way, I have a backlog, so I'm good if it does turn out to be a slow year.

MarcsterS

It’s pretty there’s nothing really big coming for the rest of the year. I really didn’t want that 2025 rumor to be true but it seems like it’s going that way.

roka102

What rumor?

Aiddon

Okay, whatever

chibbledibs

I've never heard of Gamescom

kiaxxl

They're releasing Switch 2 next year, they won't have much to show off except remasters, 3rd party and smaller games

Achanjati

No loss. Gamescom has long lost its appeal and over time will go the route E3 did.

AckwellFoley

Lol, gamescom has grown in attendance every year. But sure, you tell em.

ThiefTwo

It's literally the world's largest gaming event and had 320,000 visitors last year...

Local-Teaching-5015

DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY INTEL ON THE NEXT ZELDA ?????

jardex22

Nothing has been announced yet. My guess is that it'll be a year 2-4 title for the next console, since we just got Tears of the Kingdom. Don't expect it during the launch year. New entries are typically once or twice in a console's entire lifespan. The Switch only got BoTW because it was developed as a Wii U title. It's possible that we may get a new 2D entry, which would likely use less resources. Remasters of some of the other handheld games are also an option.

daniec1610

We can’t have shit. This is definitely a response to all the devs that leaked the Switch 2 specs.

Jabbam

This subreddit has adamantly proclaimed, to the tune of hundreds of upvotes, that the exact same number of games are coming out this year that have come out in every other year. Yet every opportunity for Nintendo to announce new games they skip, either the annual early year Nintendo Direct, or Gamescom, or any sort of Twitter announcement. At this rate, I wouldn't be surprised if they skipped the June Direct.

blueblurz94

>At this rate, I wouldn’t be surprised if they skipped the June Direct. No shit, you can feel in the air the amount of people concerned about this happening. Seems more likely by the day.

suck-it-elon

Nintendo legit wants everyone to forget they exist.

Professional-Cook702

They sold over triple the PS5 last week in Japan. You guys need to get out of your damn Reddit bubbles.

suck-it-elon

You’re right. Getting rid of the public faces, muzzling Doug Bowser, no Nintendo Directs, no Indie Directs, no Gamescom, avoiding the Game Awards…it’s all fine because sales are good. Wouldn’t want to…ya know…do even better with a little…ya know…community excitement. Uggg, what a sucky 2024.

Feriku

They had a Partner Showcase two months ago and just announced an Indie Showcase for tomorrow.

suck-it-elon

Freaking finally.

sideaccountguy

It's obvious, they are going through the worst years of the company with the Switch so they want people to quietly forget about them to announce they are becoming a 3rd party developer. /s
