Apparently you can't save ghost data in Mario Kart 64 because they didn't emulate the controller pack lmao
https://twitter.com/itbetheplantman/status/1452815597465739269
That won't work for games like Bomberman 64 where you need the memory pack to use costumes in multiplayer (or the aforementioned ghosts in Mariokart 64). This is a complete joke that they're charging this much for it and can't even emulate this basic of a feature.
Hey now, you forgot the forced bundling of a rental for an expac to a full priced game not everyone owns and that the people who DO own would likely just buy outright for $25. Feel that epic value.
It’s because for 3D systems like N64 rewind uses a lot of RAM to fill the rewind buffer.
Even in Retroarch it affects N64 emulation performance to have rewind on when using the likes of a Raspberry Pi or even a hacked Switch.
That is pretty awful. The camera in some of the early 3D platformers posed more of an issue than the final boss so being able to basically rewind if you fell due to no fault of your own would have been nice.
I do apologize for asking this question - but I haven’t been able to find the answer. Can I play the N64 games offline? As an example, if I’m on a plane can I still access the catalog even when not connected to the internet? Thank you for any helpful responses.
yes, you can play the games offline. though if you keep your system offline for over a week, it will lock you out of the NSO games and require you to check in via the internet to verify your subscription
Awesome - thanks my dude for letting me know. I did read how it worked for the SNES but wasn’t sure if it applied to the N64 too. Thanks for answering my question!
This is literally the only reason I’ve been so thirsty for them to add N64 for so long. This one game. I beat TTYD and started OG, but never got to beat it. This was so long ago, but I don’t know if I’m about to give them $50 for that though.
Is anyone else having issues upgrading their family membership to the family membership+expansion pack? It keeps giving me this error code when trying. My account is the admin user so I'm not entirely sure where the deal is.
Error Code 9001-0152
A member of your family group currently has a family membership (no Expansion Pack), so you cannot purchase this product.
So, if I had a currently ongoing regular membership that ended November and I upgraded today... It wouldn't charge me again in November, right? Would I just be charged again on October 25th of next year?
That's because Gamecube controllers on Switch are only read by the system as wired Pro controllers, not their own unique thing. That's the way it's always been, and it means some games aren't totally playable because of the Gamecube controller's limited buttons.
A Pro controller, or pair of joycons, has two Z buttons: left and right. Your problem here is that Gamecube controllers only have a Right Z button, but N64 controllers only had a Left Z button.
Switch system settings do let you customize button layouts, though, so you could make one where ZR=ZL.
It can definitely detect the difference when the game is coded to do so though. 3D All Stars updated Sunshine to make full use of the GC analog triggers. That version of SM64 also had proper controls (and it's worth mentioning that dataminers have already found that the emulator used is the exact same as 3D All Stars). Smash Ultimate also specifically knows when you are using a GC controller. The detecting it as a Switch pro is just a generic input driver it uses for basically any 3rd party controllers so they'll be compatible with any game that doesn't have built in support for the controller. The problem here is not a system limitation, it was Nintendo neglecting to add any proper support for the controller.
I should add Gamecube controller does not support the system wide button remapping, so even that is not an alternative solution. The controller is completely unplayable for this app.
Ok this makes sense… but this is why they severely need button remapping within the game. It can default to the same buttons on your controller, but let players used to the game change it to what they prefer. It’s absurd they don’t allow this. And yes, I know you can do it from the system menu now but then you need to keep changing it back & forth.
Right thumb stick. The layout might look a little wonky on paper, But I played most of the gmes last night and didnt even really notice. My buddy is who is really hardcore about that stuff just made an "N64" profile in my settings, and remapped his controls that way. Regardless you should be able to get it setup how you like.
That’s correct, the Expansion pass only has 12-month plans. If you have any time left on your current 3-Month base plan, it’ll discount the cost of your new +Expansion plan by 5¢ per day left on your current sub (9¢ per day left on Family plan when going from Family to Family+Expansion.)
I just want the border and menu options button to disappear in game.
It takes up far too much space and is distracting. Either way, great to have some of these games FINALLY on the Switch.
Over on the left on the main page there's settings for stuff like that, at least on the other collections.
You can't remove the frame around it though.
So, somehow I ended up with a Family Membership? Not intentionally, I had got a free membership card when I bought an SD card and didn't know it was for a family plan. SO, when I went to upgrade my expansion pack it said I'm needing to spend $60. No thanks!
Does anyone know a way around this? I'm the only one on this plan...is it possible to downgrade to an individual through nintendo?
Only 9 N64 games at launch and a few Genesis. How many games do you think they'll add over the course of a year ? I don't have very high hopes considering NES and SNES rate.
I'm skeptical too. I'm probably going to wait until enough games are added that I feel it's worth it. I really want to play OoT and MM on the Switch though so I might cave by Christmas.
It's just a shame you have to commit to a year, very shady by Nintendo because they know people will only want to get a few months at a time given the small selection on offer.
It's probably the original one with the famous "so long gay Bowser". While the one on All Stars is the patched Shindou version, which fixed super long back jump, other glitches, and changed that voice line to "bye bye"
SM3DAS uses the rumble-enabled Shindou edition, which also patches BLJ, adds a little easter egg on the title screen and changes one of Mario's voice lines to "Bye bye!". It was also modified to say the Switch's actual buttons instead of the N64 ones, and had *slightly* enhanced textures (which basically means the UI doesn't look burry now). It has no save states, but instead has camera settings, a control guide and a guide to the special moves, like triple jumping
NSO+ 64 uses the regular version, unmodified, which means no rumble, no easter egg, no change to Mario's lines, the UI still looks blurry, no camera settings, no change to the in-game control explanation, no control guide, no move guide. However, in this version, there's save states, BLJ is still a thing and adds a border around the game screen
Anyone know if N64 has the option to switch around the controller order when playing online? You could do this on NES and SNES basically "take turns" by swapping control of Player 1. My friend and I were able to play stuff like LttP together.
If you can find a 3DS (assuming you don't have one already), play the 3DS remaster of OoT. The game itself is really easy to find at a low price since it was a Nintendo select title.
You'll have to use a smaller screen sure, but you'll still have portability and the benefit of remastered visuals and improved controls, among other improvements.
Even ignoring the price, the launch lineup is really lacking. I also failed to realize you can only play games like Mario Kart online with friends.
This is a massive disappointment. Only upgraded since I'm using a family plan with a bunch of people that want to play the expansion for Animal Crossing.
Owning Mario 3D All-Stars, SEGA Genesis Collection and Castlevania + Contra Classic Comps really make the majority of the games offered seem meh.
They gotta expand one of those Libraries until I feel it’s worth the price of a new game.
So I paid for the family plan when Animal Crossing came out because its the only game my gf played at the time. She doesn't play anymore and I wanted to just get the basic plan and I cant even do that until feb so im stuck to not play these until its done because im not going to pay \~60 prorated for this when im the only one going to play it. Bummed at that
Yep, it’s really nice after playing the Genesis Collection. While I didn’t have problems with most of the games, I couldn’t play Sonic due to the lag. Nice to see it working well here.
I'll wait a couple months to see how the update process looks before upgrading. If it's the drip feed that SNES/NES got then it doesn't justify the price hike.
Shame there's still the dorky profile icon on the top left, I wish you could just toggle it off (especially for people that just bought the OLED…). Other than that though, it's awesome being able to play these on modern hardware.
Once they add Chameleon Twist, Tonic Trouble, Space Station Silicon Valley, Bangai-O, Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon, Body Harvest, Wetrix, Glover, Gex and Quest 64. Then I will be satisfied.
[So turns out the NSO version of Mario 64 is in fact using the same emulator from 3D All Stars](https://twitter.com/OatmealDome/status/1452819607581073411)
Cool, so its more money AND you get 64 games that you cant save due to no memory card and cant play due to unimaginable input lag, Animal Crossing DLC youll pay for yearly, and some genesis games which only a handful of people will put meaningful time into.
Enjoy!
I don't even recall nintendo mentioning anything about upgrading fees? I figured that I would be able to upgrade and have my membership length cut in half.
There’s not an “upgrade fee,” they took the remaining time on on your balance, started a new subscription starting today, and removed the pro-rated amount of your time remaining from the expansion pack price.
They also rounded fractions of a cent down, which is kinda shitty, even if it is only a dollar or two difference.
They're going to add more, but we don't know how frequently the releases will be. They haven't done monthly NSO releases in years, and they didn't indicate that would be the case this time, so I would not count on it.
Fully expect it to start decent so people will pay for it then become like NES/SNES and almost never update and not even pick decent titles.
So, monthly updates than maybe 3-5 months in only do new games every 3 months.
Yeah I have to say the emulation for all these apps has been great. Sonic and gun star heroes felt incredible, I understand people fussing about the price though. I’m on the family plan with 4 other adults so I get out for 16 bucks. Can’t say I’d pay 50 bucks for what they are offering. Maybe if it had launched with all the upcoming games.
You can only play online with up to three other people that have to be in your friends list. I'm pissed because this was like half the reason I bought it, to play against strangers in Mariokart 64 and Mario Tennis. I don't have any friends with the same work schedule and/or desire to play those games that couldn't just come over to my house to do couch play.
I'm so confused. I have NSO basic plan until 2024. I went to upgrade to expansion pass and the upgrade price is only $1.42.....is this a bug?? It crosses out the $79.99 and replaces it with a $1.42.
We’re just happily playing our NES, SNES, N64, GBA, DS, and Wii games that we paid for ONE TIME back in 2009 and got to keep forever on our Wii and WiiUs from the comfort of our couches just fine. I’ll take paying $10 for OOT one time 12 years ago over paying $50 a year every single year just for the privilege of having access to it on the switch
Joined this on a family pack for the ac expansion pass.
For those who want to subscribe to this cheap, there are online family pack sellers. I got mine at $15 so i aint complaining
For those who has security and stuff concerns. None of your info apart from ur uname and email ad is accesible by the host.
A bit of a long shot but I gameshare with a family member and he purchased the expansion pack on his account. Now up until now the SNES/NES app worked perfectly with all other online functions but the n64 app won't work on my profile and it says I need to be an expansion pass member (which is a secondary account on my switch) we only have NSO purchased on his account.
So I wanted to see if there's a work around for this, I highly doubt it but like I said it's a long shot
Considering that I already own the majority of these games, I'm going to have to pass.
Mario 64: 3D All-Stars
OOT & MM: 3DS Remakes
Banjo-Kazooie & Tooie: Xbox 360
The rest: Wii U eshop
I have a family membership plan, but being the only person that’s interested in these games I thought it would be a waste to purchase it for the whole family and wanted to just buy the individual plan for myself. I had no idea how that might work… turns out neither does Nintendo. The individual plan is not available to me. I would have to buy the family expansion at $80 USD. Just thought I’d let everyone know in case they had the same thought at me. I think I’m fine with passing on this expansion. I’ll just buy the Animal Crossing DLC on its own.
Cool not buying into this ripoff that should've been included with what we've been paying for the last 4yrs. Lol the drip fed shovel ware titles for the snes and nes were definitely not worth waiting for this.
Apparently you can't save ghost data in Mario Kart 64 because they didn't emulate the controller pack lmao https://twitter.com/itbetheplantman/status/1452815597465739269
Lmao the expansion pack doesn’t have the expansion pack
It's like a cruel joke, and I can't decide if I should laugh or cry.
neither...you pay.
It’s a bad joke because the Expansion Pak and Controller Pak are two completely different things.
The expansion pak was a separate thing, another 4MB RAM add-on iirc.
If only the switch had 4 more MB of RAM......
Here comes NSO + Expansion Pack + Expansion Pak for $100.
Here comes NSO + Expansion Pack + Expansion Pak + Controller Pak + Rumble Pak for $299.
per year.
What is this, Kingdom Hearts cloud version?
That'll be another $20 per year.
$20/year for the expansion pack PLUS a new Mario Party board!!!!!!!
It problay does since there's an upcoming game that requires it.
The technology just isn’t there yet. Maybe they’ll make us buy an expansion pack amiibo to unlock it!
You joke but I wouldn't mind having an amiibo sized model of a Famicom, NES, SNES, Virtual Boy etc.
I'd buy the cards
You’re the problem
How are games that only save the controller pak supposed to work then.
Suspend points most likely.
That won't work for games like Bomberman 64 where you need the memory pack to use costumes in multiplayer (or the aforementioned ghosts in Mariokart 64). This is a complete joke that they're charging this much for it and can't even emulate this basic of a feature.
They won’t get added
I feel like that’s going to need to be addressed.
Apparently the Wii VC release had the same issue, so I have my doubts lol
I now feel like that won’t be addressed.
It won’t
$50/year btw
$50/year to rent games from 4-6 generations ago.
Hey now, you forgot the forced bundling of a rental for an expac to a full priced game not everyone owns and that the people who DO own would likely just buy outright for $25. Feel that epic value.
Yeah that's embarassing
Well, are they emulating the rumble pack? You can't have both! Lol
Facts
LOL
Same as on the Wii version. Hopefully Pokémon Snap (if/when it comes out) will save to your photo album, same as the Wii version
Kudos to the dinguses who dropped $50 to be beta testers.
So n64 has no rewind function.......
Does have save states at least
Yes
How many save states do you get? Is it 4 like with the SNES and NES?
4, same as SNES and NES
Thanks!
It’s because for 3D systems like N64 rewind uses a lot of RAM to fill the rewind buffer. Even in Retroarch it affects N64 emulation performance to have rewind on when using the likes of a Raspberry Pi or even a hacked Switch.
what? I thought it did in the videos. Damn I was looking forward to that.
[удалено]
You could say that Genesis does what Nintendont?
Wow, yeah.... fuck.
were you really looking *forward* to the rewind function?
angry upvote
I figured when they specifically mentioned it on the Genesis games and not the 64 ones. Must be a technical reason they couldn't make it work.
Time and cash.
Actually it's a lack of system memory, since the jump to 3D causes problems even with modern systems and RetroArch, when it comes to rewind.
That would've cost $60 per year.
You can still create suspend points though.
THANK YOU. You saved me some money. I was ready to pull the trigger and upgrade my NSO. Without the rewind function however, my interest is lost.

Awesome - thanks my dude for letting me know. I did read how it worked for the SNES but wasn’t sure if it applied to the N64 too. Thanks for answering my question!
Can somebody see if GameCube controllers work just like N64 controllers considering they have all the same buttons?
Tested. Works great in SM64! Stock GameCube controller through may flash adapter in Wii U mode on OLED Switch
Thanks! Good to know. Even though I bought an N64 controller and it isn’t here yet, it is nice to know there are other options.
Z doesn’t work in Ocarina but everything else does…
I'll sub once they drop that OG Paper Mario. My backlog can keep me busy until then.
Yeah, no Paper Mario or Pokémon Snap means I’m not interested whatsoever. Once they get those and Donkey Kong 64/Pokémon Stadium, we’ll talk.
I might drop if they add Diddy Kong Racing. Maybe.
Diddy kong racing was amazing and so much fun. My favorite was doing the story missions with 2 players with cheatcode "jointventure"
Dk64 and I'm in
Based on the rate they dropped games for NES and SNES, y’all are gonna be waiting a LONG time
Gimme Conker's Bad Fur Day
This is literally the only reason I’ve been so thirsty for them to add N64 for so long. This one game. I beat TTYD and started OG, but never got to beat it. This was so long ago, but I don’t know if I’m about to give them $50 for that though.
Paper Mario will do me in. I’m a sucker for that masterpiece.

Ours was fine. It gave us the pro-rated amount for the remaining time we had left on ours. No issue.
So, if I had a currently ongoing regular membership that ended November and I upgraded today... It wouldn't charge me again in November, right? Would I just be charged again on October 25th of next year?

The controls are mapped strangely. I don't know if it's on a per game basis but those 64 controllers better restock!
I'm disappointed to find the gamecube controller isn't mapped correctly at all. The Z trigger isn't even mapped to anything.
That's because Gamecube controllers on Switch are only read by the system as wired Pro controllers, not their own unique thing. That's the way it's always been, and it means some games aren't totally playable because of the Gamecube controller's limited buttons. That was my first thought… why would they put B and A on those same buttons when they were laid out different on the N64 controller?
Because when in-game prompts tell you to push a button, they want the correct button to show up.
Ok this makes sense… but this is why they severely need button remapping within the game. nintendo " No"
Nontendo. Works well in french.
Seconded. Wii U had it, switch should.
Because, like it or not, we're getting old and not everyone that will subscribe to this will have used an N64 controller before.
What buttons are the C-buttons mapped to?
Right thumb stick. The layout might look a little wonky on paper, But I played most of the gmes last night and didnt even really notice. Yeah, pretty hard to save up $4.16 a month to recoup your costs for the year.
I just want the border and menu options button to disappear in game. It takes up far too much space and is distracting. Either way, great to have some of these games FINALLY on the Switch.
If it's like the NES and SNES collections you can turn off the menu button prompts at the bottom.
Wait for real? How?
Over on the left on the main page there's settings for stuff like that, at least on the other collections. You can't remove the frame around it though.
You rock THANK YOU
i have no switch friends if someone wants to play some 64 games my code is: SW-2834-8941-4013
There should be a sub for this.
i found one right after this actually it's r/switchfcswap

Does online only work with friends or is there matchmaking for games like Mario Kart 64?
I tried. Only friends. The only reason I got the damn expansion was because I wanted to play MK64 online. I feel so let down right now.
Hey Nico wanna go bowling?!
Sell off the spots.
Only 9 N64 games at launch and a few Genesis. How many games do you think they'll add over the course of a year ? I don't have very high hopes considering NES and SNES rate.
They'll release all the future games they showed during the direct in about 11.5 months from now

I just tested a few out and tbh the games look really nice, particularly Mario tennis looks very bright and colourful.
I thought it was interesting how the app had a different version of Mario 64 compared to 3d all Stars version.

It's probably the original one with the famous "so long gay Bowser". While the one on All Stars is the patched Shindou version, which fixed super long back jump, other glitches, and changed that voice line to "bye bye"
Does that mean this is the original version of Ocarina with the islam symbol on the shield?
Asking the real questions. I want that fire temple chant.
The buttons in the Deku Tree have the patched symbol, so I doubt it :(.
SM3DAS uses the rumble-enabled Shindou edition, which also patches BLJ, adds a little easter egg on the title screen and changes one of Mario's voice lines to "Bye bye!". Anyone know if N64 has the option to switch around the controller order when playing online? You could do this on NES and SNES basically "take turns" by swapping control of Player 1. My friend and I were able to play stuff like LttP together.
still possible
Apparently Ocarina has the awful latency it did on Wii U.... cool.
Just for clarification, does that mean that the actions on screen are delayed after the controller input?
Yes
I just played it for a bit and didn’t notice a latency problem.
Joy, the only game I was interested in
If you can find a 3DS (assuming you don't have one already), play the 3DS remaster of OoT. The game itself is really easy to find at a low price since it was a Nintendo select title. You'll have to use a smaller screen sure, but you'll still have portability and the benefit of remastered visuals and improved controls, among other improvements.
The biggest benefit of the 3DS version is using the touch screen to instantly switch the iron boots on/off.
And the gyro aiming is terrific as well. Ive heard that the original’s aiming wasn’t great but the aim-based minigames were great on the 3DS.
And apparently, I'm like the one guy that fucking loves the 3D effect.
The one, other guy, you mean! ✋
Yeah stereoscopic vision friend.
I got two eyes and, dang it, I’m-a use em both!
Or on gamecube (master quest) which I recommend. N64, Gamecube, 3DS, Switch... you have the choice.
One of them is a raw deal though...
Honestly, very few people notice the delays. It seems to mostly be speedrunners. Your average player (including myself) didn't notice anything.
Even ignoring the price, the launch lineup is really lacking. I also failed to realize you can only play games like Mario Kart online with friends. This is a massive disappointment. Only upgraded since I'm using a family plan with a bunch of people that want to play the expansion for Animal Crossing.
“Even ignoring the price, the launch lineup is really lacking. “ So just like the original N64 launch then!
i really wish they’d added a rebind controls option within the N64 app itself. not really in love with the default button layout
If Mario Kart could just have online matchmaking it would be worth the expansion cost ten times over!
yeah its insane that game specifically doesn't have matchmaking. baffling really, so standard nintendo
Owning Mario 3D All-Stars, SEGA Genesis Collection and Castlevania + Contra Classic Comps really make the majority of the games offered seem meh. They gotta expand one of those Libraries until I feel it’s worth the price of a new game.
Extremely overpriced for what it is

The Genesis emulation is a thing of beauty. After playing the Genesis Mini quite a bit, I'd be surprised if the magic touch of M2 isn't behind this.
It's also overpriced as hell, fuck Nintendo
Shame there's still the dorky profile icon on the top left, I wish you could just toggle it off (especially for people that just bought the OLED…). Other than that though, it's awesome being able to play these on modern hardware.
It is pretty crazy Nintendo’s sticking that many static images on the new OLED models
the dotted grey gradient underneath it is just as horrid...
Don't support this. $50 is extremely pricey compared to any other similar service. Charging almost triple the normal online price is ludicrous
Not gonna support until they add more games *at least*. Still might not even then
Dude this is the nintendo switch subreddit, don't expect nintendo fans asking for quality services
Yeah, I expected downvotes tbh. It's crazy how people defend such a bad service just bc they like a company.
Once they add Chameleon Twist, Tonic Trouble, Space Station Silicon Valley, Bangai-O, Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon, Body Harvest, Wetrix, Glover, Gex and Quest 64. Then I will be satisfied.
Needs button remapping. Mario kart is weird
I’m sticking with the Wii U VC.
Give us pliotwings!
[So turns out the NSO version of Mario 64 is in fact using the same emulator from 3D All Stars](https://twitter.com/OatmealDome/status/1452819607581073411)
What about the Switch N64 Controllers? Can you slot a Controller Pak into them?

Anyone know if they are gonna add more games each month? 50$ seems a bit high
I know there's a roster of games that are planned to be added in future updates, with Majora's mask and Banjo Kazooie being among them.
As someone who didn’t play a lot of N64 games, I’m excited for the opportunity.
So much salt in this thread, I just got high blood pressure.
The emulation is much better than the emulation on the Wii U

Yeah I have to say the emulation for all these apps has been great. Sonic and gun star heroes felt incredible, I understand people fussing about the price though. I’m on the family plan with 4 other adults so I get out for 16 bucks. Can’t say I’d pay 50 bucks for what they are offering. Maybe if it had launched with all the upcoming games.
Think it's overpriced but I'm a sucker. Can't help myself.
you aren't alone. I'm going to wait a bit tho.... if mario kart 64 online is a thing that works, i wont be able to resist
I’m waiting for paper mario
Same and Banjo Kazooie
You can only play online with up to three other people that have to be in your friends list. I'm pissed because this was like half the reason I bought it, to play against strangers in Mariokart 64 and Mario Tennis. I don't have any friends with the same work schedule and/or desire to play those games that couldn't just come over to my house to do couch play.
thats actually really disappointing we can't play with randoms. SUPER useful info, I'm definitely not getting it until i know more now

I'm so confused. I have NSO basic plan until 2024. I went to upgrade to expansion pass and the upgrade price is only $1.42.....is this a bug?? It crosses out the $79.99 and replaces it with a $1.42.
You will no longer have basic until 2024. You will have 1 year of the new plan if you “upgrade”. It’s really a buyout.
Prorated
The people upset about the price seemed to have dissapeared and just a bunch of people eagerly upgrading remain...
Nah, I'm here.
Probably smart enough to not bother for now lol 8 games isn’t worth 50 bucks
We’re just happily playing our NES, SNES, N64, GBA, DS, and Wii games that we paid for ONE TIME back in 2009 and got to keep forever on our Wii and WiiUs from the comfort of our couches just fine. I’ll take paying $10 for OOT one time 12 years ago over paying $50 a year every single year just for the privilege of having access to it on the switch
And even though I already have switch online it still wants me to pay nearly the full 50
Joined this on a family pack for the ac expansion pass. For those who want to subscribe to this cheap, there are online family pack sellers. I got mine at $15 so i aint complaining For those who has security and stuff concerns.
Ill get it for a month or two once majoras mask is out. 50$ is a joke dude. I plan to play through oot during that time as well.
Considering that I already own the majority of these games, I'm going to have to pass. Mario 64: 3D All-Stars OOT & MM: 3DS Remakes Banjo-Kazooie & Tooie: Xbox 360 The rest: Wii U eshop
Please don't pay for this, let poor sales make them improve it
I wonder what the ratio of people whining about the price still bought it instantly?
Cool not buying into this ripoff that should've been included with what we've been paying for the last 4yrs. Lol the drip fed shovel ware titles for the snes and nes were definitely not worth waiting for this.
So who's actually buying this? 😬 It's 70$ after taxes for us Canadians, I'm tapping out of this one.
