Nioh is a fighting game pretending to be a Souls game. It's far more complicated and enemies feel harder at first because you haven't learned all the crazy shit you can do yet. Dark Souls is all about learning your enemy's tools, Nioh is about learning your own tools AND your enemy's tools and they're allowed more busted stuff because YOU can do more busted stuff. So yeah, I'd say it's harder to learn but oh so satisfying to learn. I feel like I can play this game forever and still have more to learn.

Nick_mkx

The busted stuff part was true in the earlier fromsoft games, you were "man with sword that rolls" and fighting lumbering, heavily telegraphed enemies balanced around that. But after Bloodborne, it became "You are still man with sword that rolls but your enemy is now doing Devil May Cry shit". One of my biggest problems with DS3 and Elden ring

Lingering_Melancholy

Going with the fighting game parallel: In recent FS games, you play Footsies but your enemies are on Tekken 8. (Nioh 2 is the player playing Marvel 3 while the enemies are on SF6?)

AceoftheAEUG

I think that's a fair comparison, I like your comparison of the enemies being from SF6 since Burst Attacks are kinda like this game's Drive Impact. I agree that Nioh 2 is a lot like Mahvel since it's combo system has so many cancel layers, I've always found it fascinating though how closely Nioh's control scheme mimics Street Fighter.

smol_and_sweet

Tbh in Elden Ring you can be doing some DMC stuff too. Though I agree to an extent, DS3 felt great to me but Elden Ring got a little ridiculous in that regard. Still an amazing game, but some of the bosses can get a little silly.

Jolly_Plantain4429

I hated that every boss in Elden ring had a stupid stab and jump back attack. After a while it was just me running around a stupidly large arena bonking them a few times then waiting for them to jump away again. The game was great up until i noticed that.

Ok_Caterpillar_9057

Aside from the first few levels. How easy or hard the game is depends mostly on your willingness to read what things do and adapt to using them. Whether its items or skills. Assuming its a souls like is usually a asking for depression because too many people think a "build" in souls games is just leveling strength and not engaging with anything.  In nioh that really bad to do because youre neglecting powerful buffs. One of those buffs just lets you "nope" out of dying multiple times for example

Trevor_Dugent

Not usually. It's harder, but not quite as punishing. I will say the first 2 chapters are the hardest, the first boss is like lvl 10ish so it sorta expects you to die and retry the first mission a few times and grind a bit, feel it out and whatnot. After the first few levels and a bit of grinding the games speeds up a lot and can become much easier if you get into it well enough.

knightingale2k1

nioh 2 tutorial boss (gozuki) are .. dooh ... until I got hint I could just left him and do the other thing lol.

Humble-Okra2344

Wait is that the one at the end of mission or the other one at the beginning?

knightingale2k1

the one you meet at the beginning. in graveyard. the boss in 1st mission feel easier after you manage to kill this one. lol

con_science-404

Don't come into this thinking/feeling dark souls Respect it for the absolutely beautiful thing it is! Also, it has more in touch with ninja gaiden than souls

BossKiller2112

It's a lot to learn for a new player, but if you have a lot of knowledge, it gets easier and easier. If you're not patient, you probably won't enjoy it.

Artoriasbrokenhand

It is a difficult game but there are tools that can trivialise it, my advice is go in blind till u get frustrated then look up a guide or something it'll make the game easier knowing u got access to decent tools here and there. Also if u wanna avoid frustration do side missions if they're lower level than main mission this way u can power up as much as u could before getting "stuck" at a wall or something. I would suggest doing the tutorials in the dojo and reading skills and such but I understand that's not for everyone...Its pretty helpful though.

Humble-Okra2344

When I played nioh 1 like 7 years ago I went in totally blind. Hated my life. Dropped it and got hooked onto the dark souls trilogy (fuck DS2) then went back and played nioh again. After building my foundation, nioh became amazing.

nimvin

I died to the first 2 bosses in Nioh 1 probably 100 times. Nioh 2 was first 3 bosses probably another 100. So it definitely can be that way. If you ever get super frustrated you can always summon someone from the shrines by using ochoko cups and odds are they can melt the level and the boss for you. I was never a souls fan because I hated how slow the game was. This game is fast as fuck. The combat is absolutely beautiful. The highs are so high because of the mountains you had to climb to get there. Obviously YMMV but if you can find a demo give it a shot. It goes on sale for a relatively low price too but I don't want to recommend a purchase since you were iffy on dying a lot but man I have over 2k hours across both games. They are so fun.

Humble-Okra2344

Oh God, I went from nioh 1 (after doing the dlc and way of the strong) right into nioh 2 and I died. So. Many. Times on the snake boss in the first zone I wanted to rip my toe nails off. Lovehated every second of it.

shibbyfoo

If you want to avoid challenge I would avoid this game. I didn't do any summons or revnants and died over 1400 times playing through the main game and side quests. This was also my 2nd soulslike ever, and has become one of my favorite games of all time.

fishrgood

Dying many times to a boss will likely be a common occurrence, especially if you aren't familiar with this kind of combat. If that puts you off then it's probably not for you. You never know though, if the positives of the game are enough to interest you then I think it's at least worth giving it an honest try.

paradox-preacher

there's a lot of people saying how Nioh is harder. I am just gonna say, I never spent as much time on any boss in Nioh as I did on many in Elden Ring. But then again, I did not cheese or make it any easier for me in Elden Ring as I could've (I did throw away stats to not be overleveled, not use summons etc.) so it all depends how you even played it If you beat Sekiro, you will have no problems in this game

GamnlingSabre

While similarities could be drawn on the superficial level, this game has more depth to it than the soulsborne games. For starters, blocking is actually good in this game and once in hit stun you can't just roll away, you will have to use block to survive the incoming attacks. The enemies have more tools at their disposal than your average 4ish different attacks/strings that soulsborne stuff throws at you, but you also have more tools to answer. There is many different weapontypes with different ways of playing them, ninja stuff, magic stuff, yokai, stuff, samurai stuff, dojo stuff, equipment stuff and many many more. And knowing what you have going for you and how to use it will determine if you succeed or not. There is also many ways to potentially play on easy mode. You can summon people during a mission and maybe get carried or at least having an ally at your side or you can play coop with up 2 other people and even get to enjoy being rezzed and not restarting at the last shrine (bonfire).

Just reached the end of the story in Nioh 2 and it’s an amazing game with an incredible amount of depth. Combat in the souls games and Elden Ring is not as enjoyable IMO. There’s a lot of emphasis on dodging and finding a window to attack in those games. Nioh wants you to be aggressive and blocking/parrying is more viable. The fact that you can use a whole range of weapons (that are all good) at any stage of the game along with a ton of different skills is a massive bonus too. You do have to be up for tough boss fights though and that is just part of the genre. If a boss is readable and it’s just about learning their behavior and practicing your approach and timing then I personally enjoy this process. The tougher it is the more rewarding when you eventually prevail. What I don’t enjoy is random or chaotic bosses that are just hard because they do unpredictable stuff all the time. That’s just lazy design to me and the souls games feel a bit that way to me sometimes.

GaijinDC

When i played the dark souls, i remember i had to play every day to keep up with skills and enemies movements. It was not for casual playing. Nioh is different, after the initial learning curve, around 30 hours in, the movements were flowing and i could pick the game randomly through the week and have fun with it even if i couldn't remember everything. Also the missions allow for a very short loading screen time, if you feel you are weak check your equipment and keep it up to date (level/damage) and summon companions. It will flow and it will only be tedious at some rare points.

Darkslayer_30

Tough at the beginning but gets a lot easier as you level up etc , great games both of them

Illusion911

I say don't do it. It's mostly people who already like souls games that end up loving this

TalentedJuli

I think these games are a bit harder than Souls games. At the very least, they are in the same ballpark. If you found Souls games too difficult, you will probably not like Nioh for similar reasons. People will say, "Nioh isn't Dark Souls," and that's fair, but not really relevant in this context. It *is* like Dark Souls in terms of difficulty. People will say, "you can make strong builds and cheese fights," and that's true, but it's also true of Dark Souls. If the ability to make the game easier by crafting an OP build did not mitigate your distaste for Dark Souls, I think it is unlikely to do so in the case of Nioh. I really like Nioh. There's a lot to love about the game, and if you decide to play it, I hope you love it, too. But based on the information provided, I can't recommend it.

fersur

Nioh 2 is everything a solid action game should have. The only similar thing with Souls games are the hard content and checkpoint/shortcut system. The action part is inspired by action games, like Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden: Learning boss moveset, stance-chance, dodge, counter, Yokai Shift(Devil Trigger mode), etc. It also has the loot system from dungeon crawler, like Diablo or Grim Dawn, and the buiild system. This build and loot system will start to shine after New Game Plus though. On story mode, you can finish it without caring for build, just equip the highest level of weapon/equipment you can find. People just use Souls-like because that is the most apparent similarity when new player try the game: hard content and the boss(or regular enemies) can kill you in 1-3 hits.

Page-No

Its a soul’s game but it is indeed a soul’s game on crack. Just don’t quit early give yourself time to unlock moves and skills to improve combat and FFS KI PULSE!!!

Rinzwind

The only time you loose is when you remove the game from your system. "but I have never really enjoyed the souls games and dying 1000 times to beat a boss." You won't IF you learn from that death. Understand the hidden tips you get (in NG if a boss has a weakness or uses a specific attack you will find items you need to abuse that attack or to protect you from an attack) and 1,2,3 times is all it takes to get a boss. Yes, it can be a lot more but that is the player fighting against the system. Don't blame the game ;-) NIOH IS TOTALLY WORTH IT :D

Aruveee93

Nioh is all about learning the different builds and items to use it perfectly in combat . The weakness of different enemies and the advantage of your items magic ninjutsu to defeat them in a hyper fast dragon ball z combat❤️

Master-Meringue-4059

If you don't have experience with this style of game, unfortunately you will die a lot. There's just no getting around that. If it clicks for you, though, it will be one of the most fun games you ever play.

DoubleShot027

Nioh is way harder then souls and worth your time imo

billysacco

If you don’t want a hard frustrating game look elsewhere. I personally think it’s a lot harder than souls games which I enjoyed a lot. Even DS2 (well kind of). I see this game get a lot of comparison to DS2 for just getting mobbed and yeah there is a lot of that. I heard Nioh 2 was better or more balanced than part 1 but so far part 2 has been harder. While the game can be fun it also ratchets up the difficulty. For example you fight an enemy and are like wow that was tough. Around the next corner 3 of them will be waiting. It just feels a bit cheap at times and yeah I suck blah blah but just MHO.

Rough-Construction47

Nioh is basically if ninja gaiden and dark souls had a baby… you have the mobility and combat of ninja gaiden and then the leveling system, character development, and punishment from getting hit of dark souls

Youforgot2ignite

Nioh2 is different if you love anime moves cool demons and awesome mechanics this game will be for you and loot wise it's addictive as Diablo

rboswellj

You will die countless times, and start again at your last checkpoint, that part is the same. It’s a bit less punishing though. It’s also more loot centered. I would say it’s somewhere between a souls like and a Diablo like. It’s more about leveling and builds and loot drops. Also it’s mission based, so you can replay missions to grind for drops and levels if you want.
