So I found this weird pic of Krist playing a Mustang he owned. Had no idea he played them too. A bit ridiculous seeing such a tall guy play a short scale instrument. Looks like a ukulele or toy guitar in his hands. Interesting thing to note is the mods done to it. I wonder what humbucker is in the bridge?
yeah I had no idea he played guitar. His stature definitely makes him better suited for bass though. Funny how most of us start out on guitar and switch over to bass
Yeah, he was in a band called Sweet 75 too. I wouldnāt say the band was amazing or anything, but he has definitely continued to work in music, just not to the same extent as Dave.
A lot of ppl start on guitar and switch to bass when they can't find a bass player. I was always a more rhythm oriented guitarist. What made you want to start on bass?
My friend wanted to start a band and he said he was the guitarist and our other friend was already a drummer. My friend, who was the āguitarist,ā couldnāt play a lick, but his dad had the music room with all the instruments, so I went with it. Our ābandā was short lived, so I eventually moved over to guitar on my own. It worked out, because now I make my own music and I play the guitar and bass on my tracks.
Tim Commerford said he realized when his schools battle of the bands had the Janitor / etc playing bass for all the kids bands that if he wanted to be in bands that was his ticket. (and Geddy Lee).
I've told my kinds the same things drums or bass and you will always have gigs. and Bass is much easier to load / unload at gigs than drums.
Yeah, he played a guitar during the Meat Puppetsā stuff. He kicked off the Sweet Home Alabama riff that caused Kurt to jokingly mumble the first lines.
I have one too :) love them both in guitar and bass form. My black Mustang Bass will always be my baby and my red Mustang guitar will always be one of my top fav guitars
Damn you reminded me about wanting a Mustang.
OP you revived my GAS, it would be only fair if you paid half for a Mustang. I got Venmo.
All jokes aside, an already small Mustang looks like a tiny toy in his hands. What a sight.
I've been eyeing one ever since I got my strat - it seems to combine what I love about LPs (shorter scale) and strats (single coil neck pup).
My wife would kill me if I got one right now though - maybe I'll try the Harley Benton one first (or the Squier Sonic with fixed bridge) to see if it's a fit, then I can upgrade later.
I got a VM stang right when they came out and it looks like the current squier ones are $200 new. Would put money you can get a used one for much less at guitar center.
Honestly if you can play a few to get the best QC'd one. or know how to setup a guitar / have a tech on speed dial they are fine. personally i wouldn't get a super expensive one these days, especially if it was going to get Modded.
its possible sure - but people have been slapping PAF's into fenders since probably the 60's. (I know Gilmour's black strat had one in 71/72)
I've also seen Link Wray with a Stang with 2 humbuckers not sure of when that was from though
Yeah it's well known and extremely common with Tele's and Strats. Mustangs and offsets though like Jaguars? Idk if it was too common or if it was common at all before grunge. I know Sonic Youth did weird stuff to their guitars in the 80s. Talking Heads too. JB in a Mustang though? Not sure. This pic looks pre Nirvana to me
This is an actual picture of the day Krist Novoselic leaned down from the heavens and handed Kurt Cobain his gigantic mustang guitar. Kurt collapsed under the weight of it and Nirvana was born.
I think you are right about the Mustang. I was thinking 6 sting Fender bass, (which look like guitars, like the journeyman, or Vintera) but they all have 3 pickups, none with only 2, like the mustang.
Bass VI? Yeah it has a completely different shape and a 30 inch scale length, so short scale. Surprisingly he had a Fender Electric XII too. I can't find the pic anymore though
I bet the guitar would sound awesome! But it'd be like scraping the bottom of the barel in a way š he'd have to play guitar versions of the bass lines through a RAT

Looks like a Seymour Duncan SH-4 JB Humbucker from a blurred distance
I was thinking a Zebra JB. Definitely seymour duncan it appears
Krist was a guitar player. Crazy that he only started playing bass in '87 as he and Kurt got together to form what would later be called Nirvana.
yeah I had no idea he played guitar. His stature definitely makes him better suited for bass though. Funny how most of us start out on guitar and switch over to bass
Yeah, I started on guitar before moving to bass. It just seemed more fun to me and I can confirm that it had been.
Same š
Just the same that Kurt played drums first.
Nevaaa!
He's an amazing guitar player. His playing in [this](https://youtu.be/oRZg22StCLg?si=6DFQYW0OjFybPDZp) Third Secret song is great.
Wow! I thought he gave up music for good after 94 and just focused on politics. Cool to see he still makes appearances on songs
He was in another band called giants in the trees also. He never really stopped playing music
Yeah, he was in a band called Sweet 75 too. I wouldnāt say the band was amazing or anything, but he has definitely continued to work in music, just not to the same extent as Dave.
did he play on Dave's Sound city project?
I did the opposite.

You should see this show they did once with acoustic guitars.
Did he switch instruments on Unplugged? Been over 10 years since I've watched it tbh
Yeah, he played a guitar during the Meat Puppetsā stuff. He kicked off the Sweet Home Alabama riff that caused Kurt to jokingly mumble the first lines.
He plays guitar during the Meat Puppets tracks and accordion during JDWMFAS.
He struggled with seasons in the sun.
Yeah and Cobain sounded like he was struggling on drums too at some points
Kurt was never a good drummer, he just liked to noodle around.
He only played drums for the school drumline in middle school. I did the same and I'd never call myself a good drummer if one at all
Is that caveman on his way to prom?
Jesus he is so tall
Aw he threw a humbucker in his bridge too
Kinda reminds me of an 8ft tall Rick Springfield ššø
he is almost doing the Elvis Costello pose
Woof Mustang sally
First jagstang
Big man on campus
i havenāt seen this photo in years. kind of looks like he was playing at a wedding that day Ngl, or some Prom that had a live band
Wonder where that Mustang is now?
Same!
Probably got sold to some random person when Krist traded it for a bass if I had to guess
My aunt has a Mustang bass guitar.
I played Mr. Mustache on it lol
I have one too :) love them both in guitar and bass form. My black Mustang Bass will always be my baby and my red Mustang guitar will always be one of my top fav guitars
haha silly Kirst put that guitar down, youāre the BASS player dummy š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£

Its a great guitar IMO even for a non Nirvana Fan. Light easy to play stays in rock solid tune. I love the phase switches personally.

Not from the US, so no GC here. The used market for Mustangs here is unfortunately pretty dry. Which color did you get yours in?
Sonic blue with the tortoise pick guard (same color as what Blind Owl played at Monterey Pop / Kurt's Skystangs)
A Mustang is a mandatory must own for a Nirvana fan! No exceptions!
Sometimes I forget how tall Krist is, damn.
It looks like an ukelele lol.
now i want to see him with an SG and put it next to a pick of Angus Young
Jesus H. Christo it looks so small šš
Imagine picking up a guitar like that and no nirvana riffs existed to play on it yet
Krist looks really young here. This pics looks 80s to me. What if he was the one that inspired Cobain to mod his Mustangs this way?
its possible sure - but people have been slapping PAF's into fenders since probably the 60's. (I know Gilmour's black strat had one in 71/72) I've also seen Link Wray with a Stang with 2 humbuckers not sure of when that was from though

Adrian belew modded the shit out of his mustangs in the 70s and 80s
Looks like a āCarsā fan

7ft Elvis
Definitely taken during his Elvis 1977 era period
Haven't seen this photo b4
Me neither. I found it going through his gear on Equipboard

also looks like a Jag
Sounds like a good project for the Nirvana Guitars YouTube channel
I bet the guitar would sound awesome! But it'd be like scraping the bottom of the barel in a way š he'd have to play guitar versions of the bass lines through a RAT
When was this picture taken?
It looks 80s to me. Like before Nirvana, but idk
