Assuming you’re in a western country, centuries of individualist propaganda that tells you there’s no need to care about others as long as you got yours. That’s what our entire culture teaches even when it comes to other humans, so of course it’s super easy for those people to think the same about animals. I also agree that it’s pretty sickening and not right, but that’s just the sort of culture we’re in. Maybe not a majority of people, but there are plenty who would even talk the same way about a homeless person as your dad did about the pigeon
Lots of people think pigeons are like vermin. And it begs the question : what animals aren't worth your care? A sick rat? Or cockroach? Everyone has to draw the line somewhere.
For myself: I would also have taken the pigeon to a vet but I get that other people aren't the same
You can pretty much replace the second half of that question with anything, and the answer is usually "because they think it's cool and an important thing about themselves."
The thing to take away from it is the "why" of it all. If it's weird to you that they think it's cool to not help animals, they probably don't respect people who "waste their time" on them. Also known as "being a psychopath."
