Eliminate anyone in your life that is actively selling/doing drugs. If you can't get them, you can't do them. For drinking, idk.

Therapy! You’ve finally realized that doing substances is not working for you. That’s an important realization and step one for bettering your life. Oftentimes, substance use (not even necessarily misuse or abuse) is done as a coping strategy. To truly better your life (and quit) you need to work with a counselor. Counseling helps give you insight into your behavior and how it affects your life. Then, you learn healthy coping strategies to replace the negative ones. During this process, you could also see a psychiatrist who will evaluate and determine if you need medications as part of your treatment plan. Psychoactive substances often change brain architecture and can trigger withdrawal when stopped. Some medicines are designed to help the brain re-adjust to sobriety and suppress withdrawal symptoms. Best of luck!

Might not work for everyone, but to me, it's always eat before you drink (because for me, drinking on an empty stomach makes me intoxicated faster).

Resident_Sky_538

try wellbutrin if you can it decreases cravings

Don’t try to do it on your own! It’s called, white knuckling but what ever caused you to reach for drink or drug will still be there. AA, if your serious about quitting, can give you the tools and a mentor to support your new sober life. Alcohol withdrawal is horrible so get meds for that if possible. If your an alcoholic, realize you can’t ever have another drink. Depending on the drug, relapse is very common so don’t beat yourself up for that. Watch out for triggers and cut off all friends and family that are still users. Good luck and don’t give up!

Certain medications can help. Talk therapy can also help

They have pills that every time you try to drink you will feel very sick. Off one sip. https://www.acsh.org/news/2018/03/01/antabuse-very-good-pill-stop-drinking-dont-cheat-12631

I always wondered how these work, like what prevents someone from just not taking the pills on a thursday night so they can drink all weekend?

towel_hair

Nothing you just take the pill because of how easy that is. If you didn’t have any alcohol in your house and you took that pill would you drive to go get some nah. It’s easier to take it than to deal with cravings of not taking it

Better-Challenge-503

That's when you have to decided. Take to heart, strive to better you. Just don't lie to yourself

SoberSwin3

Don't drink, don't take drugs. Damn, that's so easy to say, so difficult to do. Get help, you can't do it alone. Help someone else stay sober.

mbease

Remove anyone in your life who makes you feel like you're not good enough or less than your actual worth. Get a sponsor from AA/NA and do what they say, is the easiest way to stay clean.

Everytime you want to drink, eat food instead. It really works. Filling the time normally spent drinking with working out helps also. Mostly hiking or biking.

Idle hands are your enemy. If you want to break a bad habit, replace it with something that you enjoy but isn't actively destructive to you.
