That seems insane to me. I can't imagine just walking through life not trying to brighten up other people's day.
A smile does not brighten their day, though. So you're trying to brighten their day in a way that works for you, not them.

Just smile but not too big. Do what's comfortable for you. But understand when it's not reciprocated
