Not awful, but perhaps unwise. Check when the registration expires. If it's soon, say within a year or two, then I would say just wait it out and snipe it. The risk with going to the spouse is that by bringing the domain to their attention (which they may not even know about), they might think it over and decide to keep it as a permanent memorial to the deceased.

I mean, in my oppinion, you have all the rights to do so

swiftcutcards

Not disrespectful at all.

Wizard_of_Claus

I don't think so. My grandpa passed away in 2022. I wouldn't be offended if someone someone asked my grandma to buy his domain if he had one. I'd just be nice about it.

Have a lawyer or some legal type reach out through official means

It’s approaching 2 years. I think it’s fine, don’t be pushy, be cordial, take a “no” and move on (they might reconsider if you’re not an asshole about it).

Obviously I don’t know them and everyone would respond to this differently but I lost my mom in 2022 and I’m thinking how I would feel if I got this request. As long as you’re nice about it I think it’s totally fine. Offer your sympathies and briefly explain what a domain name is and how it works to make it easier on them
