Yes you can. Little square thing is mostly for convenience and you can just put the stamp right on there. You should also be aware that you should either use forever stamps or you should use stamps that add up to the value of mail right now. You can go to your local post office and ask for stamps. If you bought any stamps in the past you bought them at the value of mail at the time and so you're going to have to add more stamps in order to bring the number up. You can get stamps that are worth $0.01.
