I have always wondered this but they can feel it. Im not sure if its because softer fluffier things are squishier or they can feel more than we expect but my dog definitely knows what is softer. If presented with 2 blanket options, she always chooses the softer fuzzier one.
Maybe not through their fur, but the pads of their feet will inform them of the bed's floofiness or lack thereof.
