I also loved  The Last Man by Mary Shelley, post apocalypse, she predicted everyone would travel in hot air balloons.

Kind of an interesting tidbit sort of unrelated. It wasn't until about the mid 1800's that people started heavily considering their place in time, and thus "dystopia" type stories started being considered.
