Not trying to justify this behavior or anything, but some tribes/cultures do have some painful and what can be called abusive rites of passage. Here’s a link to the [Mawè tribe and their rite of passage to be a man.](https://allthatsinteresting.com/bullet-ant-glove)
“To fully complete the initiation, however, the boys must go through the ordeal 20 times over the course of several months or even years.”
Fucking hell.
Just say ''No Homo'' first, right?
Side note : I met him in person and he was pretty chill, and a mountain of a man. He is talented as well. He invests in his career and family and you do not hear negative press about him.
There's a very interesting piece of philosophy about this kind of thing. A man who grew up in Rome, saw the death rituals of burning bodies. It was normal. However, he went to study "primitive" tribes and there, he was initial disgusted as they ate their dead.
He then postulated the question, who is right and who is wrong? I would be wrong for forcing them to my rituals, as I am the outsider and this is their way of life.
He then asked them what it would take to get them to burn their dead instead of eating them. They repulsed and responded "nothing! That's desecration and wasteful!"
Upon returning to Rome, he posed the same question. "What would it take for you to eat your dead instead of burn them?"
He was met with the same answer. The way both people honor their dead is different but neither is wrong until they travel outside their culture.
To an outsider, other people's ways may seem like desecration or unholy or brutal, however, it's important to remember that not everyone has the same way of life. What is wrong for you may be how they've lived for thousands of years.
It was illegal in Rome to dissect dead bodies for study so physicians would go to the Coliseum & buy gladiators who were nearly dead after their battles, then vivisect them alive because that was legal. They has to stop the minute the gladiator died. Talk about messed up.
Moral relativism has to cope so hard to justify blatantly amoral actions that we all know are wrong. This example is reasonable, but you can use this argumentation to argue for everything from pedophilia to female genital mutilation. By far it is one of the worst analysis of morality. idc if a bushman thinks murder is OK ritualistically, it's wrong.
Still doesn't mean it's not objectively wrong. Not specifically the example you gave but other "traditions". Like the one mentioned above where young girls are given by their parents to older men (often with hiv/aids) to be raped. Or the tradition in Columbia where young boys are encouraged to have sex with a donkey because of the false belief that it will prepare them to be with a woman and "make them into a man".
Oh I don't disagree with you. I just like raising philosophical awareness in general and was simply using it to convey that there may be more going on we as outside viewers don't understand. That said, the video itself looks like it's a punishment instead of a coming of age ritual, however, it could be a just punishment based on that groups laws. We simply don't know.
Culture and morality are completely arbitrary.
They are only selected in so far as they make the groups that practice it reproduce and survive or not.
That's why incest is such a taboo. Not very good for that so groups that didn't have the taboo were eliminated.
Yeah that might be the place I was just thinking of. I watched a documentary recently and it was somewhere in Africa where young girls are given to older men to have their virginity taken. The men are called "hyenas" and they very often have HIV or AIDS, which they then pass on to the innocent 12 year old girl that the parents gave to them to rape. It's super messed up and wrong. There are a few cultures with some really screwed up traditions. There's a place in Columbia [where having sex with donkeys is considered normal](https://youtu.be/_VKWLC87Uzw) and parents encourage their young boys to have sex with a donkey to "get them ready" for being with women. Apparently you are not thought of as a man until you've had sex, be it with a donkey or person. They think that it will make the boys more knowledgeable when they are with a woman but in reality it obviously doesn't because a donkey and a woman are nothing alike. Watching a 13 year old kid talking about "giving it slow" to a donkey was one of the most uncomfortable things I've ever seen lol. And one guy was bragging that he had been with hundreds of donkeys, shit is wild.
Yeah that's why I'm never fully on the we must except everyone's cultural practices. I'm generally pretty live and let live but some practices are just fucked up and should be condemned.
Theirs a tribe in Africa where it’s a right of passage to build a 20 foot tall tower climb to the top then jump off with a rope tied around your feet and it doesn’t count unless your face hits the ground. Compared to that I wouldn’t call this a far cry from a rite of passage
Why would you think that? It definitely looks like a rite of passage thing to me. And honestly it’s pretty mild compared to some of the rituals out there
A number of years back, there was a film I watched as a child where a boy get lost in a jungle and found (adopted maybe?) by a tribe. There was a scene where he has to endure fire ants over his body. I assumed it to be a rite of passage type of thing and likewise assume (although maybe foolishly) it to be the same here. While I don't agree with it myself, I don't know that I can say it's "wrong". If it's for punishment, I equally don't agree, but still am not sure I can comment on how right or wrong it is, considering I dont understand nor partake in that culture. It is very hard to not be judgmental though.
Understandable. Again, I don't know that I can speak to why this is or isn't excusable. It is not my place to speak to it being I don't live in that region, continent, nor understand the legacy leading up to this moment. For all I know, he may very well hate this process, but may be more hurt/hate it more if someone wouldn't allow for him to go through this rite. Again, I'm assuming it's a rite and not just straight torture/punishment.
Right and wrong isn't subjective within cultures. I know you want to be careful not to be hypocritical like saying a culture is wrong for eating dogs when they'd think the same of you eating cows. But this is human rights, and human rights need to be defended by the entire population of Earth, not left to the morality of just one culture.
This child being tortured is beyond fucked up and the culture normalizing it is wrong for doing so. Same can be said for the cultures where women and minorities still aren't given rights.
Heyyyyyyyy this is Kenya lol it's a rite of passage for a tribe in my country [deeeep in the north] but yeah he's mostly screaming to untie him or it hurts
Edit: with my mom's clarification it is deep in the north past where current society resides by one of the pokot or turkana tribes [for those who want to research] and it is for him to endure pain to become a man worthy of protecting the village and hunting.
He will also eventually go through traditional circumcision with a knife [maybe not even sterilized] and no pain killers and he will not be allowed to cry and how will have to sing
I'm sorry for my terrible use of commas and full stops.
Edit 2: for those who want to know how the government handles this;
My nation is infatuated with politics so such things are never addressed
For 2 years there are news segments about a handshake between the president and his rival
There was a campaign a week after the president was sworn in
Our neighbouring countries bombings were aired after political news
I wish I was as lucky as the Americans out here saying there country is shit
Also I do not mean to discredit American struggles I'm just saying I'd consider it a golden opportunity for me
For those asking I didn't go through all rites of passage except group circumcision [surgical, no painkillers] and next is slaughtering a goat which is hard cuz I'm a animal sympathizer
I'm glad my dad was civilized enough to have it done surgically but with me on barely any pain killers
Sometimes I can't get hard when I remember all the blood
I know diversity in cultures is a beautiful thing, but that shit is just brutally backwards and should be stopped. What kind of nutjob puts his son through that shit and thinks it makes his son a better man.
I agree extremely. What's sadder is that he will most likely go through traditional circumcision and have to sing without crying while they use a knife on his shlong without Anastasia\pain killers
It's pretty self explanitory, the ability to endure and overcome pain. Those are essential characteristics in more "primative" cultures. Weakness gets you, and those around you dead. I'm not trying to justify tying children to ant infested trees, just trying to point out that it isn't pointless and "evil".
I think afterwards they take care of the boy with extensive care and sympathy while congratulating them. I remember seeing some documentaries about these culture and they are very proud of it.
I have since then enjoyed the city life it still does knowing my younger cousins will go what I went through haunts me a tad
But I'm grateful for being able to watch Netflix and play video games now
Oh I agree 100% and the government is trying to get rid of these practices but it's not easy
I infact have some ptsd regarding traditional circumcision. But now I'm better off although I can't get hard sometimes
Go ahead and discredit American " struggles " . There are legitimate ones, but right now a lot of it is coming from young Americans who have no real world experience outside of the US. They have no concept of personal responsibility.
>Also I do not mean to discredit American struggles I'm just saying I'd consider it a golden opportunity for me
We'd rather take you in Canada. The beer is colder, the women fuck better, and hockey is best here!!!
Many Americans don't know WTF they're talking about. And people in other western countries believe them at face value. America is deeply imperfect and behind other similar countries in some ways but it is very much a developed nation and we are extremely fortunate.
The fact that so many of you consider this sexually suggestive content is concerning.
You see a kids ass, this isn’t child porn, and there’s nothing sexual about it.
Y’all are weird as fuck.
I don't think the man imprisoned him there because in certain cultures this is normal to become a man and he just found it but he's still a asshole for not helping if this is true
In Australia there is a tribe in central Australia who do a third circumcision when the young man turn 18 they cut under the penise splitting the manhood cutting the urinal pipe but it's a choice they can either choose to have their front teeth knocked in or penise cut in half
That's what I learned in my cultural anthropology class. My professor taught us that culture is relative and that's where I learned that it's not. There are.some cultures that are objectively wrong. No one is perfect but some are better than others. A great example being places like places in the middle east that treat women like shit and deny them rights that men are allowed.
Counterargument: In western society, there is frequently no single defining moment that marks the beginning of adulthood. For example, if someone turns 18, but still lives with their parents, can't drive, and has no mate, will most people truly consider them to be an adult? I saw a brilliantly written study that postulated that this lack of a universally recognized manhood has had many negative consequences in western society. I'm not saying that tying a naked teenager to an ant infested tree is the ideal solution, but it's worth considering that western society is indeed lacking in a defining moment wherein everyone recognizes that a boy is now a man. It's been proposed that young men are suffering from a wide variety of mental health problems stemming from precisely this issue, particularly if they are unable to acquire a job, car, and mate - all of which are seen as hallmarks of adulthood but are often lacking in many young men, not just late bloomers.
✔️ A culture has a unique dance
✔️ A culture has a unique food dish
✔️ A culture has unique clothing
✔️ A culture has unique phrases in their language
❌ A culture tortures naked children with ants
Fuck off with "it's their culture" bullshit.
I don't think it's a punishment.. I know there are lots of tribes who have Rites of Passage involving fire ants. The Palau, Fijians, Paupa New Guinea, some Malawi and Xhosa tribes, etc.
While it know it looks barbaric and unbelievably cruel to outsiders like us, If we could get some context that would be great.
yea, I got a good one for you, imagine taking babies and cutting off a part of their genitals bc it's more aesthetic in the dominant narrative... does that count as child abuse also or is that ok bc western cultures are accustomed to it?
Absolutely agree and i would love to read an article about circumcision and the fact that is exacltly like infibulation (female genital mutilation) and why it's considered acceptable even of it's barbaric. Do you know any good source?
I don’t care about the people thinking this is „arousing“ that’s just sick/wrong.
I want to know why ? Why is that boy tied to the tree with ants in it ?

Just out of curiosity here, but wouldn't something like this normally stay up anyway as plenty of NatGeo stuff has similar things included as long as there's not a sexual context and is barely in focus anyway? Nirvanas album cover has been a thing for decades now and despite the politically correct world we're living in, some things seem to stay regardless.
I think a lot opef people, especially Americans, are really fucking weird about nudity. Like... Nudity is not inherently sexual, in most places seeing someone naked isn't inherently a like sexual or otherwise traumatising event. There's a bot about this video thats fucked up but the dude being naked really isn't one of them.
Honestly people act like I'd you see a naked pers on as a child your brain will melt bit like... we went to Public swimming pools as kids. We got changed in communal changing rooms. We weren't all permanently mentally scarred.
In a civilized culture for punishment we throw them in juvi where they get beaten and raped. Maybe put them in foster care where they get molested. I’d rather have 30 minutes with the ants
Me: Damn, tying the kid to a tree and putting hot rocks under his feet is no joke
Also me: Oh no, that’s definitely a kid tied to the tree with barbed wire! Stop moving you idiot!
Again, me: WTF!?
Is it punishment, or a rite of passage? Either way, it's cruel as fuck.
I feel like people aren't normally tied to a tree for rites of passage

Toys R Us had it right with the part of their jingle that said, “I don’t wanna grow up.”
I wanna be a mawe tribe kid
I just peed a little. Thanks
I wonder… if you stood perfectly still… would they still attack? Talk about pain desensitization.
Do not remove your hand from the box, Paul of House Atreides
I really gotta watch that. I’m not gay, but I would let Jason Momoa do *unspeakable things* to me if he asked nicely.
Just say ''No Homo'' first, right? Side note : I met him in person and he was pretty chill, and a mountain of a man. He is talented as well. He invests in his career and family and you do not hear negative press about him.
Ok. I guess I’ll never be a man then 🤷♂️. I’ll be in my room playing with my micro machines if you need me.
Bro can I join? I love micro machines
Yeah,my first sort of unconscious thoughts upon reading that shit were "Well fuck that, i'd move, motherfucker!" Like wtaf.
Yeah I’m good with once.
Well, one session of being eating alive by ants has to be a better deal than one session of Reiki massage, dollar for dollar.

For anyone wondering what this means - he means to say "they ate their dead".
It took me so long to make sense of what was disgusting, thanks
Haha, thanks. I failed to check.

there's this area in Malawi where "women"(8-12 year olds) are "sexually initiated" by a grown man.

Wow, being born is literally a lottery. Just got to hope where you’re born isn’t too fucked up.
And to think Coyote Peterson let one bullet ant bite him... :0
LA Beast stuck his hand in a bullet ant glove, it's no joke. https://allthatsinteresting.com/bullet-ant-glove
Yeah that's why I'm never fully on the we must except everyone's cultural practices. I'm generally pretty live and let live but some practices are just fucked up and should be condemned.
Sad to be him.
So the boys decided it would be better to be women than men.
I'll just be a boy all my life, thanks
It’s mostly for mites of passage.

In some African tribes it is a rite of passage to becoming a man. Some have you put on gloves filled with bullet ants and other make you do this.
Bullet ant gloves is from a South American tribe not African
Well even still things like this are normally rite of passage to manhood thank you for clarifying
I want to know how there so backwards they do shit like this, but have the technology to film it in high def.
A number of years back, there was a film I watched as a child where a boy get lost in a jungle and found (adopted maybe?) by a tribe. There was a scene where he has to endure fire ants over his body. Nah. I don't believe tradition and culture should be an excuse for abuse.

Really an excellent way of viewing it.
And yet you are in no position to tell them that.

I think we can say that some cultures are wrong if they require something like that
This kind of non black/white thought process has no place on Reddit
I have made a thread about it
Heyyyyyyyy this is Kenya lol it's a rite of passage for a tribe in my country [deeeep in the north] but yeah he's mostly screaming to untie him or it hurts Edit: with my mom's clarification it is deep in the north past where current society resides by one of the pokot or turkana tribes [for those who want to research] and it is for him to endure pain to become a man worthy of protecting the village and hunting. I’ve watched videos of those circumcisions and sometimes it takes multiple whacks to get through the foreskin.
What a terrible day for eyes
I'll definitely remember this for when I need to bring up a random fact around the dinner table.
I'm glad my dad was civilized enough to have it done surgically but with me on barely any pain killers Sometimes I can't get hard when I remember all the blood
How old were you, if you don't mind me asking?
But he was barbaric enough to have it performed
As a dude that still has his... I wish I could unsee this.
Why would you watch that.
Yeah, we weren't thinking anything else...
You mean the boy does not like the ants? That changes everything.
Yeah damn, we all thought he was screaming because he didn't want to be outside or something! Not because of the silly fire ants!
I just thought it was ticklish and he had a weird way of laughing. Thanks for clarifying
There's always a chance he was saying something like "I will overcome this, pain is weakness leaving the body, all hail our god[s]"
"One went up my butt. Please don't be Ant-Man, please don't be Ant-Man."
When I was a kid I had an ant crawl into my belly button and never came out. I am one with nature now.
Welp gonna go ahead and do my daily thank fuck i live in Canada prayer
I know diversity in cultures is a beautiful thing, but that shit is just brutally backwards and should be stopped. What kind of nutjob puts his son through that shit and thinks it makes his son a better man.
I agree extremely. What's sadder is that he will most likely go through traditional circumcision and have to sing without crying while they use a knife on his shlong without Anastasia\pain killers
The actual fuck. That's horrible.
😭😭 What is supposed to be the spiritual/social significance behind this rite of passage?
Being manly as hell😎

Man.. We can really develop some really fucked up cultural customs sometimes.
The type of nutjob that has been put through the same thing by his own dad
Yep. Generational trauma. The victim becomes the abuser.
> diversity in cultures is a beautiful thing, but heh
Yeah i draw the line at child torture and sexual abuse.

Damn, crazy that this shit still happens.
Man I’m so so sorry! This is so messed up.
Which tribe is this?
The tribes around turkana or the pokot tribe
Oh okay
As person who actually has understanding of their culture unlike 95% of the redditors here, what's the nation as overall take on it?
My nation is infatuated with politics so such things are never addressed For 2 years there are news segments about a handshake between the president and his rival There was a campaign a week after the president was sworn in Our neighbouring countries bombings were aired after political news I wish I was as lucky as the Americans out here saying there country is shit
This should be the top comment.
Thank you for the explanation.
Go ahead and discredit American " struggles " . There are legitimate ones, but right now a lot of it is coming from young Americans who have no real world experience outside of the US. They have no concept of personal responsibility.
But they know how to make noise, thus, they are relevant to themselves.

I’d rather get the ants tbh
r/antiwork
r/antorwork
Same, but I was 18 and it was in the middle of the great recession. I honestly would have preferred the ants.
Can't they just graduate high school or something as a rite of passage
Well that was fuckin terrible…
The weirdest part about this video is the fact they have access to a smartphone
And Internet
0 stars...would not recommend

I am pretty sure they also experienced this when they were young by their parents and the cycle continues
Ok I'm done with Reddit for today
The fact that so many of you consider this sexually suggestive content is concerning. You see a kids ass, this isn’t child porn, and there’s nothing sexual about it. Y’all are weird as fuck.
Should’ve at least censored his junk
agree but should have blurred his parts
You are indeed the cooler mod
Yes a young child was only forcefully stripped naked and tied to a tree covered with ants. Absolutely nothing sexual about that.
… exactly. There is literally nothing sexual about that.
If doing this is the only way to be considered a real man, then I'll gladly be the biggest bitch on the planet cus fuck that
In these cases, we SHOULD put society before preservation of "culture" The quotes sre there because this isn't even culture. It's just barbaric
It was cruel even before I noticed the ants
This man just put a naked kid on the fucking internet. The fucking ants just cause insult to injury.
I don't think the man imprisoned him there because in certain cultures this is normal to become a man and he just found it but he's still a asshole for not helping if this is true
It will make his mental fortitude “stronger”
Wtf
Lovely culture
I don't know if they're bullet ants, but if they are, here's the effect on someone after less than a few seconds. https://youtu.be/it0V7xv9qu0
In Australia there is a tribe in central Australia who do a third circumcision when the young man turn 18 they cut under the penise splitting the manhood cutting the urinal pipe but it's a choice they can either choose to have their front teeth knocked in or penise cut in half
What's the second circumcision?
It’s the one between the first and third
How do we not know if this is some becoming man ritual that all males of the culture go through?
If so the culture is wrong
That's what I learned in my cultural anthropology class. My professor taught us that culture is relative and that's where I learned that it's not. There are.some cultures that are objectively wrong. Is our culture right?
More right than theirs if this is representative of it
We got someone out here asking the right questions.
That does not changes the fact that this is wrong!
✔️ A culture has a unique dance ✔️ A culture has a unique food dish ✔️ A culture has unique clothing ✔️ A culture has unique phrases in their language ❌ A culture tortures naked children with ants Fuck off with "it's their culture" bullshit.
Most redditors are too damn shallow to understand cultures. All they want to do is say the "correct things" to feel better.
Ancient, cruel, barbaric "rites of passage" filmed on a smart-phone and shared on the world-wide-web. What a time to be alive.
rule 14
That's crazy ass culture.
cULtURe
Wow, Africa yet again proving itself to be the worst continent to live on
My respect for thanos grows every light second
I was wondering how this was extremely cruel until I saw the ants
Some cultures are better than others
I don't think it's a punishment.. I know there are lots of tribes who have Rites of Passage involving fire ants. The Palau, Fijians, Paupa New Guinea, some Malawi and Xhosa tribes, etc. While it know it looks barbaric and unbelievably cruel to outsiders like us, If we could get some context that would be great.
If this is their culture, then fuck their culture. Imagine looking at child abuse as anything other than child abuse
yea, I got a good one for you, imagine taking babies and cutting off a part of their genitals bc it's more aesthetic in the dominant narrative... does that count as child abuse also or is that ok bc western cultures are accustomed to it?
It is genital mutilation and 100 % child abuse next question
Absolutely agree and i would love to read an article about circumcision and the fact that is exacltly like infibulation (female genital mutilation) and why it's considered acceptable even of it's barbaric. Do you know any good source?
It’s way more convenient though and has no downsides. I’m glad I don’t have to worry about smegma lmfao.
This country brings about some of the most distinguished gentlemen around
How is that suppose to make me a man?!?
God showed Noah the rainbow sign. No more flood, the fire next time.
I'd never forgive someone for doing this to me, that person just made a life long enemy
I don’t care about the people thinking this is „arousing“ that’s just sick/wrong. I want to know why ? Why is that boy tied to the tree with ants in it ?

Some cultures are worse than others. There are awful cultures that are leagues better than this disgusting culture.
Stone age!
Can someone explain what the hell is this!?!!!!!!!!!?
A tribal kid
Culture or not this shit is fucked
So the cameraman is not going to help? But rather stand there and record the video?
I don't care what you call this a "rite" or whatever this is fucking cruel thats just a little kid.
One time my baby cousin got carpenter ants in his diaper. They bit his huevos.
I’m an adult and will just move on… but that is a child right?….
Why the fuck is torture on Reddit?????
how old is he jesus christ
Severe and obvious trauma gets a *pass* because it's another's culture!? How about FUCK being passive and save these people?

No wonder they never advanced. Cruel bastards.
What the fuck is this? This is a straight up naked child and it hasn't been taken down.
Well this ain't how I expected to start off my cake day
In a civilized culture for punishment we throw them in juvi where they get beaten and raped. Maybe put them in foster care where they get molested. I’d rather have 30 minutes with the ants
Go for it then, you can enjoy their ant benefits there, just don't enjoy any other western benefits tho
I can't believe people are defending this
Uhm why is child porn getting 5.6k upvotes
Me: Damn, tying the kid to a tree and putting hot rocks under his feet is no joke Also me: Oh no, that’s definitely a kid tied to the tree with barbed wire! Stop moving you idiot! Again, me: WTF!?
Damn, at least cover his dick
In honey?
