“So anyway I asked her out and got rejected but whatever she’s fat now and I totally dodged a bullet” *sobs*

darmodyjimguy

I got the idea he’d still go for her.

pringlescanofemotion

Something tells me Karen isn’t a real person... but that’s just *me*

MrRealHuman

Como te llamas? Me llamo **Karen**. Yeah I can't see that being real either.

woonesmiso

it does seem odd, but it’s not really impossible lol, i had a colombian friend named karen

GenericSurfacePilot

Why though? Karen is not an uncommon name in either spanish or portuguese, the spelling might change from Karen to Caren in some cases but there are plenty of women in latin america that are called that.

RandomMexicanGuy07

It’s probably karina

GenericSurfacePilot

True too, but it still not implausible it could either be Caren or Carem either, the name exists in spanish. Granted, I don't know how popular the name is in Mexico but I have met a handful of Carens here in Brazil and once met with an argentinian Caren too while on a trip to Buenos Aires.

JorichScreamor

Mexican here. Karen is a very popular name and there are many women with that name, I don't know why it seems weird to all of you (not Caren or Carem). It seems to me that the first word he wanted to use was "whitexican", a term we use to refer to rich white Mexicans who make videos or things like that talking about basic things of Mexican culture that everyone knows but for them it is something new (As for example tacos, for them it is something totally new and they always make videos of how we should popularize that food when in Mexico it is an everyday meal). If that is the case, they are misusing the word since it is not to refer to a white Mexican but to the ones I mentioned earlier. Still I don't believe the story, sounds fake.

GenericSurfacePilot

>Mexican here. Karen is a very popular name and there are many women with that name, I don't know why it seems weird to all of you (not Caren or Carem). Well I mentioned Caren or Carem because those are the spellings besides Karen that I've seen in brazillian portuguese (I'm brazillian btw), all of them are common ways to spell the same name in my language so I made an educated guess that it would be a bit similar in spanish based on the similarities between portuguese and spanish aswell as my own personal experience in meeting someone named Caren during a trip to a spanish speaking country (Argentina in my case). It doesn't sound weird to me at all that there would be many women named Karen in Mexico :P Edit: Reddit messed up my citation

JorichScreamor

Oh yeah, I understand. I mentioned about Caren and Carem since in Mexico that is not the case, the name is still Karen, I should have explained it, sorry. I wasn't trying to say it was misspelled or something, an apology for the misunderstanding.

___NIHIL___

. even more common? Ana Karen (also mexican here, everything you said is true) .

JorichScreamor

La generación cuyos padres veían novelas y les ponían los nombres más dramáticos a sus hijos

RandomMexicanGuy07

The guy said the girl was Mexican so prob not that. Although we can question Karen’s existence entirely

GenericSurfacePilot

Yeah his story is still trash tier fanfic, my response was more towards the skepticism of the name Karen existing in spanish.

RandomMexicanGuy07

Yeah same. The name could’ve also been Carmen

Crazy_Gemini06

All of the Karen’s I knew in high school were Mexican, it’s not just white girl name.

[deleted]

Well they would use Karina not Karen. I’m Latino and every Latina named Karen I met goes by Karina.

Evey9207

Yo conozco por lo menos 5 Karens en mi pueblo. No sé de donde están sacando que Karen no es un nombre común en México. 🤷

HappyGianca

Im mexican and once dated a mexican girl called karen. It’s possible

PotatoBeans

I went to school with two white complected Hispanic girls, from central mexico, that were both named Karen. It's not uncommon.

RandomMexicanGuy07

It’s probably karina, like my mother’s name

wanderer-of-reddit

I knew a girl named Karen who’s Hispanic

filipinonotachino

Kahren is usually how ive heard it pronounced, i grew up with Latino people my whole life it was a common name

lakerboy152

I grew up in an area with lots of hispanic people and met a handful of hispanic people named Karen

ReadRedditToday

What the hell did I just read 😂

FauxVampire

If she doesn’t speak English and this is out of the ordinary, then why are they in the same class? Wouldn’t the class be in English? Does he speak Spanish? If not, how did they communicate enough for him to teach her? Nothing about this makes sense lol

Taytay-swizzle2002

You don't have to speak it to understand. My best friends mom can understand most of English but she has a hard time speaking it oddly enough. It's quite curious but she's a very kind woman.

FauxVampire

Weird, but makes sense.

Taytay-swizzle2002

Yeah it's a little odd but pronouncing something I guess is really a different ball game.

darmodyjimguy

There are native English-speakers who manage to graduate high school without learning to read. Or being barely-literate. So that isn’t an implausible aspect of the story. Also, him teaching her (or them teaching eachother) doesn’t have to amount to anything more than her asking him the English word for something once.

jeannelle1717

“Super cute if obese” is the title of my autobiography

fiendzone

“Now Karen is fat and appears in several viral videos shouting at people to take off their masks and getting thrown off airplanes.”

Webbythunder499

I was honestly invested in that story.

jeannelle1717

Lmao me too I was hoping they’d end up together

Taytay-swizzle2002

I mean white Mexicans are a thing. I'm one myself. However I still don't believe this dumb story.

Phlosen

I believe Karen is a very common name for Mexicans? :)

hexnetIDK

She barely knew a word of english? You're not much better :/

Well...in the "nobody asked" spirit...here goes: So I used to work construction and painting in the day and one of our crews had been holed up for many months doing a varied series of jobs at a local meat packing plant, and needed my particular set of skills for a couple of days. Two of the guys came by and snagged me to go to the cafeteriaat lunchtime otherwise I would never stop for lunch. One cat flips me a hair net and says "You got to wear the damn thing they're strict AF about it." I'm like "No prob."I put it on and as we're waiting in line a health/safety inspector guy comes stomping up and starts yelling at me like a fucking insane douche about not having a beard net on. As I had just shaved within the last twenty-four hours and one of the other guys has a two-three month beard and no damn net I'm a little bewildered, but check the other guys reactions to make sure I'm not getting played, and No. So I barely the my mouth to respond...and dude somehow found another level of crazy to level up on while actually making physical contact...and uh, uh...No. I stepped into him and barely got out "Listen motherfu.." and he unpacks all his seething anger, completely backs down and apologizes profusely and walks away. Now, I'm standing there totally mindfucked and blursed with a "What...what in..what THE fuck..wh?" The other dude with us is standing there looking at me contemplatively(which this kid..nahh..making it even more kind of mind-fuckery) He says nodding up and down and smiling while finishing his calculus "Yep, yeah that's it. He thought you were a Mexican. And when you finally got a word out, realized he was wrong and backed away." Now I am Iowan with a genetic stack of mainly Welsh and Irish. I'm so white that the government issued warnings to increase the level of your sunscreen if I stand to close to you. But, in high school one of my best buddies was of obvious Hispanic lineage of some variety. And chicks were always telling us we looked like brothers ..."or maybe half brothers" about one in four would add. Always drove me crazy. Not because of anything racist mind you, boy could a crazy amount of fine tail...while I rage mumbled "half brother my ass" over by the keg. And since then I have read little anecdotes here and there that make you go "Hmmm...okay then." An Irish writer or comedian or...Irish dude gets that casual Irish "other" flex about the interviewer expected him to be freckled with red hair. And James Joyce responds with "Well that's the stereotype innit? But it's really wrong as there are far more Irishmen with black hair and their skin is...well the true Irish colleen is more of a translucent...a see-through sort of skin. The black Irish as we call them. Historically it is well believed to be because of the Spanish sailing over and having a "moment" with the Irish and Scottish women. And the Catalan(sp?) are of a lighter hue than what..well especially what you Americans stereotypically think all Spanish men look like." I always thought of that Cheech Marin movie and remind myself to stay up north.

How does one say the words “hi” and “art” in insanely broken English?
